    Teen Minors?

There are alot, you know I've had 5 years to think about what I want for my life, the pros are being healthy, knowing I won't have as much lung trouble, being happy, just overall well being if you know what I mean? I've been in and out of hospital since I was 10, I've always been the chubby one, I have never been a size 12, last October my doctor told me that within 5-10 years I may be looking at a lung transplant which is a huge deal for anyone to deal with especially me being as young as I am, he also said that having that kind of operation would increase my risk of recovery and although he didn't say it you know he really meant survival, it just made me think of everything, I don't want to die because I can't breathe and I'm that big that I won't be put on the transplant list, that scares me more than dying of how big I am and could end up being. The Cons? Band slippage and possible removal of the band, that's it, the pros definitely outweight the cons and I would rather do this for myself knowing that in 5-10 years I won't be lying in bed thinking why didn't I loose weight? It might seem kind of strange to read this but it definitely means alot to me, my medical issues have almost nothing to do with my weight but I know that once the weight is gone I would rather have a 90% of living after surgery rather than not been giving a percentage rate at all.

    Coming back

Welcome back Susansilver. You have done extremely well in not gaining back your lost weight. But your second success was coming back to the support site. Sometimes posting when we are successfull is great but it takes courage to say you are in difficulties. The need for support is more major when you are having problems. Sure hope we can give you the support to move forward.
  4. Just one question.... can you say though that once you hit your sweet spot it really helps the weight come off so much easier?

    Who to tell?

At first I only told family and close friends/coworkers. Now that I have a date set and there is no looking back I'm telling the world. I don't care about the negative responses that I might get. I know in the end my true friends will be there for me no matter what. So far I have gotten an overwhelming positive response and have found out who else has gotten something done. I live hearing their stories, their successes and failures. It helps me to see what could happen to me down the road. The day before or of surgery I plan on telling my friends on FB. I know there will be nay Sayers but who cares. Also I'm hoping that sharing my story might help someone who is having the same issues with weight that I'm having and maybe it will open their eyes to WLS. But that's just me :-)

    Falling apart

Hi, From your ticker, you have lost 45 lbs! Celebrate that! Not sure if your surgery was Jan 2009 or Jan 2008, either way, 45 lbs is a lot of weight! You can do this! It sounds like you are very anxious and could benefit from talking to someone. The pressure of thinking other people are wondering why you haven't lost more is a tough spot to be in ( I can relate, and that is why I told only my DH about my surgery). I can only imagine that the injury to your knee and the issue with your skin folds is very tough to deal with, but don't use it as an excuse - You can do this! You are doing it! Make the decision to talk to someone, get a number, and make an appointment. Then make a promise to eliminate the foods that are tough for you to control - start one by one. Keep us posted, we are here for you!

    Hello Everyone AGAIN

Sherri! Hey welcome back - like you said and know you have to get back to the basic's - that is life! lol But you know what to do its not like you are starting over or that you gained 80 lbs and now having to get that off again. You realized within yourself that you needed to do this and that is great! I'm a newbie at this myself - but as you know this site is very helpful and remember to log your daily food/water/exercise intake. I use www.myfitnesspal.com - i have used several of the other journal online's but have found that one to be the most friendly. Again welcome back and great to nip-it-in-the-bud now!
  9. no....again...i don't want to sound like a jerk...but my weight came off real easy...i followed the rules to a "t"....exercising ....eating healthy and portion control was a breeze for me...i didnt start obessing over my weight till i had my tummy tuck and was already at goal...the obession took over to keep it off and then to lose more and more...
  10. @@Remmy75, is this your first surgery ever? The nerves are understandable. My surgery is scheduled for Oct 22nd. I have some fears, but I am WAY more excited about it than afraid. Anesthesia is the Best. sleep. Ever. I had wrist surgery about 10 years ago, and dang, awesome sleep. Any surgery has risks, but the complication rate is very low. Way lower than than the chances of dying from your excess weight. Stop focusing on the fear. Focus on the "I will be able to...". I will be able to play hard with my daughter, I will be able to reduce my pain, I will be able to tie my shoes without breaking a sweat. I will be able to...

    Lots of questions

Hey guys!! How are you doing? Congrats to both of you on your journey!! I am starting my 3 months of supervised dieting. I went to my regular doctor yesterday and sat through a 20 minute lecture about how the lap band is not a quick fix and most people end up gaining the weight back, blah, blah, blah. I was very frustrated when I left her office. I feel like I completely understand that the lap band is a tool...and not a quick fix. I will need to change my eating habits. I have been exercising 3 days a week since September, but have not really lost anything. It just seems I make the wrong choices with food... I know there are a lot of times I eat because of emotional reasons...which is what my regular doctor said is why I would gain all my weight back. LaDawn - What are your thoughts on that? How have your emotions been throughout this past year? Has it been "scary" losing so much weight? Not physically scary...but just a "different" feeling? Jacelyn and Andrea - I am originally from Cape Girardeau...grew up there. Now I live in KC for the last 12 years. Nice to "meet you!!" Anyway....Thanks so much for your posts. They're very helpful!! Angie

Comment to me with your thoughts!

Yes, yes, yes!! Actually, my clinic has monthly meetings and invites speakers. One of the most interesting was from a personal trainer who offered specialized and modified exercises (like from a chair instead of the floor, etc) and equipment (that he designed himself (mostly just extensions to machines, etc) and the other was from a yoga instructor specializing in modified yoga for 'round bodies'--also from a chair--because many obese folk have knee problems and can't kneel. My guess is if you contact the local Bariatric clinics with a viable exercise plan and modifications to suit the patients/client as they are now and as they lose weight, you will be welcomed with open arms. Go!! Ducati Bonnie
  13. You know, while I am in a completely different circumstance than you are, I kinda ended up just like you -- My husband is a diplomat and in June we move to Paraguay in South America. I thought to myself, this would be a great time to get my weight loss surgery done. I had initially wanted the lap band. So we scheduled an appointment with the surgeon who's done the most weight loss surgeries and he said, "I don't do bands, but you can choose the sleeve or the bypass." Well, I knew I didn't want the bypass for the dumping and other stuff, but I had never really considered the sleeve. I read up on it and decided, ok, I'll get the sleeve. We went back to the doctor, and he said, ok how about in 2 weeks. Yep!! I literally had to start my pre-op diet THAT day. It was crazy. And then I went in and all is history. So, you CAN do this!! From what I've read on the boards, Aetna seems to be easier to deal with -- so go for it
  14. I am exactly 3 weeks out from surgery today and have not lost a pound since. I did lose 15 lbs on the 2 week pre-op diet of 2 protein shakes and a salad w/ tuna a day, but I was starving. Can someone who is losing a good amount of weight at this time give me an example of what you eat/exercise you do in a day???? I would really appreciate it!
  15. That's awesome! Congrats on the weight loss.
  16. Nerves are here with a heavy hand. Feeling excited and sure that I am making the right decision but of course have lots if worries. The what if something goes wrong during surgery? What if I don't lose weight? I've taken today off work. I couldn't sleep last night and am just trying to take care of myself today. Any suggestions from those who had the day before jitters? I'm nervous that even with surgery, I won't look much better. My day of surgery weight is about 435, I started the process at 476 in January. I'm 6'. Almost 30 yrs old. Anyone in a similar bracket? Thanks everyone!
  17. Day 5 of my gruelling 2 week pre-op diet and I have to admit I really do feel fantastic! With all the Water I have been drinking my skin looks great, and now that both my cigarette and coffee withdrawal symptoms are fading its all become very easy and routine! I owe it all to herbal tea and sugar free lollies. I did have a moment the other day where I thought ?This isn?t so hard! Why don?t I just carry on this diet for a while to lose this weight? Do I really need surgery??. . Then last night I sat watching TV and the advertising just GOT TO ME! All I could think about was all the delicious foods I couldn?t eat, that everyone else could eat, that were waiting for me in my pantry, YELLING MY NAME!! I ended up eating a few mouthfuls of chicken and then felt pretty guilty about it! I do need this surgery! food will always be appealing, it will always only be a car drive away and I will always feel guilty about eating it. Some people do not; I am not one of those people! So all my doubts and fears are gone and Im so excited for my surgery! I already feel a bit slimmer, I think I am less bloated. I just wanted to share that in case someone out there was having the same doubts as me. We are all good at so many things, why beat ourselves up because we aren?t that fantastic at ?food????

    I'm sleeved

Glad to hear that you are coming along in your recovery...i did not have to have a drain put in and recovery for me was really good, i was not in much pain and if i was they were right there to give me something for it!! I stayed a couple of extra days expecting that i would need the extra time, but i could have flown a couple of days after, i was feeling that good, but it took us 3 days to get home, because of delayed and missed flights, having to overnite it, that part was so not fun, and now i am tired and jet legged still...but i will get back on my feet pretty soon! Congrats once again and so now let the weight fall off!!!!!

Not losing weight on the Pre Op diet

I don't know, 6 pounds in a week is nearly a pound a day. How is that "not losing weight"? Maybe your surgeon had different guidelines, but it sounds like you're doing fine. Just make sure you stick to the diet, don't cheat and hopefully you'll sail through!

    I'm just starting

Hey Im just really starting too. I looked into it before, but my insurance didn't carry it then. now it does and I am going to the seminar next week, which the surgeons office told me was the first big step. I would like to have my surgery late March as well. Just in time to start losing weight for summer. =)
  22. please dont worry i did not lose any weight on my pre op and my surgeon was happy he said that it showed i was doing the right thing as it is all to do with fluid levels and the shrinkage of my liver, so dont give up yuou will be fine! xx

    3 Month Post Op Visit

Thanks very much for the replies and support. The visit went well, he is pleased with my weight loss but is now insisting that I exercise on a regular basis. I know this but mentally the idea of losing calories when I am eating so few is a major challenge, has been from the beginning. The labs were a little questionable since I had a delay in finding Vitamins that could be tolerated after surgery. Vitamin D was low but it's been so since before surgery so that does not concern me right now. My cholesterol jumped 20 points in three months(!) and my AC1 is elevated. I have NEVER had an elevated glucose level, fasting or not, and this has set me on edge. Doc says this was the body reacting to surgery over the time period and the new way of eating but still. I have a visit scheduled with my PCP in about a week and will have her pull labs again to double check these results.
