    How do I know?

Being a slower loser is better than not losing at all. And it means you're more likely to make the weight loss permanent. I have found that when I go on "no carb" diets that I don't lose weight because my body needs carbs to break down the fat and sugar. Everyone's body is different.
  2. Hello! This is my first post. I am desperate for some advice. I began this journey in January. On my thirtieth birthday, with my first appointment of a six month program. In March, I screwed up and showed up a day late for my meeting. The people at the Weight Management Center said it wasn't a big deal, happens all the time. I had a medical visit that day and they told me to come in April for a make-up meeting. I finished the program, lost ten pounds and passed surgical review board. Then I received a denial letter in the mail from HighMark Blue Shield. The letter stated I had over lapping visits in April. Long story, short. The doctors office never faxed my March medical visit to HighMark. They corrected this yesterday. Any thoughts about how long I should hear something from HighMark? Should I file a personal appeal? Surgery is scheduled for August 15, so I am a bit panicked Any advice you can offer is much appreciated.

Coutney you look amazing! In just 7 months!! Wow!!! I bet you can't wait to go to the beach this summer all skinny and all that!  What is your goal weight and height? Or do you have a size as a goal? I kind of like that idea - some people have posted being a single didget size as goal. I don't know if I'll get that little-I'ld be happy size 10! (from 22-24!) Keep up the great work!

    Workout.....

I started at 3 weeks walking 2 miles, 3 days a week. I recently started lifting weights at 7 weeks post op. I also lift heavy weights but not super heavy. I also started running a week or 2 ago and now I'm able to run a mile non stop. My advice is to listen to your body. Good Luck
  5. Sounds exactly like jealousy to me. They will get used to the idea, then once all the weight is off and stays off; they will start thinking about doing it themselves.
  6. I was banded in 2008. Never felt full. Never reached a sweet spot. Random foods would get stuck. Sometimes the same food I'd eaten earlier without a problem. I never told anyone about my band either...and I'm glad because you can't tell I had WLS. I'm grateful that I never had a slip or erosion. However, the little weight I lost has all returned. Throwing up every day since 2008 got old...excusing yourself from the dinner table, etc. Even at 260 lbs people are thinking I have an eating disorder since I leave the table so often. 12/2012, I had all of the fluid removed from my band. I was hopeful for a revision, but the main goal was to get this band removed!! I am fortunate and have been approved for a revision on 4/25. I don't want to fail again. I'm going to give it all I got and not look back. I've decided to put the lap band behind me. I don't want to compare recovery, eating, digestion....anything. As of 4/25 (for me) the band never existed. I MUST do this. This band has been worse emotionally than any bad relationship I've encountered. Best to you all. I haven't even been revised yet and I know that it is a better decision.
  7. That's pretty much my position, except I am a bit afraid of surgery, but I'm more afraid of failing again. Regaining all the weight from the lapband kicked my emotional butt so badly that I don't want to go through it again and I certainly don't want to go through it publicly. I'm already hiding out socially, hoping that I don't run into people who last saw me at the height of my lapband success. I'm ashamed. I hate that I have to do this again, but I know that I have to do this again to give myself a fighting chance at ridding myself of all this weight and all these aches and pains. My feet and legs hurt. I walk like a fat lady...heck, that's what I am. Anyway, I thought about just getting the lapband out and going it on my own and then I really thought about it and said hell no. I've still got some fight left in me. Consider this" We have a lot of experience under our belt with band. We can use it to be better with the sleeve and take this second chance to take the bull by the horns and let our tool work for us. It's just a better tool. The band is not the right tool for everybody. The sleeve seems less forgiving and more cooperative, but not a magic bullet. Good luck (to both of us)!
  8. I am a 34 year old mother of 2 busy boys ages 4 and 6. I was a normal size throughout childhood and adolescence, but have been overweight/obese since the age of 18. It seems with each passing year another 5-10 or more pounds get added. I know I can lose weight, but I can't lose the 90 lbs that I need to without help. I feel like I have been gaining and losing the same 10-30 lbs for the last 4 years and with each loss, it seems to come back with an additional 5 lbs. I am worried for the future if I keep in this pattern. Both my parents have diabetes and hypertension and I do not want to end up with the same conditions. It sounds wimpy but I have chronic pain in my left foot that hurts everyday and I am sure it is secondary to my weight. I feel like I own all the products in the arch support aisle, I've had steroid injections, and I take ibuprofen for pain at least 1-2x daily for this pain. I feel overwhelmed by the amount of weight I need to lose to achieve a healthy weight which is why I am seeking a permanent weight loss solution with a gastric sleeve. Although I am apprehensive about surgery (I've never had any type of surgery), I am more afraid of chronic illness, living with chronic pain, and seeing the number on the scale rise with each passing year. I know it won't be easy, and I realize that I will be permanently changing my dietary habits. I feel ready for this change, and more optimistic about my future if I can have the surgery. I am currently in month 5 or a 6 month supervised diet and exercise program and hoping that my insurance company will approve me ASAP!

    Surgery Tomorrow!

Hey Texusa. Thanks for asking. I feel Awesome. I had the Op in the Frisco Medical Center at 7.45 am Last Tuesday. The staff there were awesome and looked after me so well. I knew I had to walk and pee and then I could go home. as soon as I woke up in the room, I was like, get me up I am gonna walk an pee (but not together as that was a health hazard). I was out the hospital and walking round Target at 12.30. The Wednesday I was really woozy, and slept most of the day. On the Thursday and Friday I could start feeling better and now I am over a week I feel fine and love the liquids and don't feel hungry at all. I have people eating in front of me at work and at home and even though I love the smell, I don't feel hungry. Its so strange, but exciting. I started my pre op diet 2 weeks out and lost 12lbs. I have lost another 10 lbs since the operation and yesterday gained 0.8lbs and today lost 0.6lbs, however its all going the right way and I should learn not to be a slave to the scales. I have energy back and I feel amazing. Its the best decision I have ever made. I can't wait to see myself in 6 months time. Hope that helps. any other questions, just ask away.
  10. I'm starting my liquid diet tomorrow and I bought jello protein protein protein flavor packs for water and simple liquid diet requirements.and what you can do now before surgery? I asked myself the same thing back in august. Right now enjoy eating out eating whatever you want but at the same time don't over do it or gain weight. Just enjoy your time with food. Lol. By the time you know it it'll be one week before surgery. Like me!

2 year history for Aetna PPO

Hi there CurvyCat, My surgeon told me that Aetna is a breeze to deal with, but never mentioned that they might want a two year weight history. Aetna approved me for the three month plan. When all was said and done, they did ask for the two year history showing my weight. Well, I called my doctor and he sent me 5 years worth of history (it took them a few days, but wow, they sent some really detailed information)!! I faxed it to my surgeon's office on Dec. 11th and here I am still waiting. I just wish I would have known this during the three month wait because I could have requested my weight history from my doctor so it could have been sent it in along with all of my other paperwork for surgery approval. I hope that the 5 year history will be good enough!! I will post as soon as I know anything!! Good Luck!!
  12. I finally had my official first consult with my Dr. last week, and talked with the insurance liasion about a week before that. Both are saying that Aetna has gotten very strict about the 2 year history. I've decided to do the 3-month program, much of which I have to pay for out of pocket. My Dr. warned me, though, that Aetna may still not approve me because of the lack of history. I am going to try putting together a photo portfolio and essay like I read here that some others have done. My BMI is over 42, I don't have any co-morbidities, and the only medical history I have is last year's physical, which has me at just under 40 BMI. I also can get my kids' birth certificates (2004 and 2007) that show me at over 40 BMI at the times of their birth, but that may not be acceptable as gain during pregnancy is expected and doesn't show a 'normal' state, weight-wise. I had a birth center birth and a home birth, so no hospital or doctor records there. Any ideas on what I might be able to do to improve my chances of approval? If it's a lost cause, then I want to know now before I have to pay for the 3-month program so I can start working on possible ways to self-pay. His office is also having a contest right now for a free surgery - which, of course, I entered. I'll find out later today if I'm a semifinalist. Here's hoping!

    Starting Pre-op Diet

Use your fear as motivation. I know what you're going through as I did just what you're afraid of. I am back on track now and with just a fifteen pound loss so far I am already feeling better. And now it's the weight loss I crave more than the sweets. I was in a very bad place for a while but getting my resolve back has been great for me. Oddly reading about others who are going through similar struggles has helped me realize I am not alone. It helps to know others have similar demons. We are in this together and we can succeed. Glad to see you getting back on track.

    Lost and confused

Go back to basics. Track everything you eat and drink. High Protein and low carb. If you aren't eating the appropriate foods - you aren't going to lose weight as you could if you followed your plan. No Pasta, bread, rice, sweets, potato chips, crackers, etc. Eat protein and produce (protein first). No soda or high calorie drinks!
  15. John I have to agree with you on the goal thing, it is something that changes a lot. My "goal" now is to get down just 10 more lbs and stay there. I will be at the size I want and will be at a healthy BMI, so that is all I want. Too bad you don't get to have a shopping spree when you have your weight off!! I have not enjoyed shopping for many years but love it again now!! Good luck, Bernadette
  16. I think the charts are for those imancipated runway models. . hehehe. . .i'm supposed to weigh 170 at 6'0, but i feel and look good at my now weight whatever it is, (I weigh in on Tuesday, will let y'all know) so my thing is if i lose more good, if not then good. . whatever. . . i'm doing everything right, eating right, drinking fluids (yahoo, i'm up to drinking 77 - 80 oz's per day) love drinking stuff again. . . i'm hyper now and can't sit still, so the exercise isn't a problem either. . . good luck to you Ash, you are doing great and remember you see yourself every day, it's the compliments from others that count. . . my coworkers call me "Noodle" now . . i think it's great!:thumbup1:

  18. I had my surgery a week ago which means my liquid diet included Thanksgiving. As much as I wanted to be with my family, I knew I would be miserable smelling all those wonderful smells. So, I stayed home, drank my liquids and kept busy putting up the Christmas tree. It wasn't a great day (I had a 20 minute pity party) but it was the best decision for me. Good luck. It's only one Christmas in a lifetime of them. Besides, like me, this may be the first year you don't gain over the holidays!!

    My first blog entry

Best wishes on your journey. Mine has been amazing. I am now 46 weeks. I have lost a small person in weight and wear a size 12P I think I wore that size in elementary school. LOL It has been the best decision I have ever made for myself. I feel great and I look smart in all my new clothes. I used to wear a 24 plus on a good day. Best wishes imaluckydog
  20. Congrats on making it half way! I voted 10% - any weight loss with the band is worth celebrating because in many cases and with reasonable effort, its weight that will never come back.

    Is There A February Group

Feb 22nd! 4 weeks and 4 days from now. Can't wait to lose this weight.
  22. I, like many of you, have not been perfect in my post-op life. I love slider foods! I hate excercise! I check the scale too often, get frustrated, and then don't check it nearly enough! I have tried to put on clothes only to find they don't fit like they used to! And when I find that I am failing I feel like I can't find someone who understands. We made a choice to change our lives and sometimes we forget it is a complete lifestyle change! It is hard to change your whole life! Sometimes we start going back to "normal", eating the carbs and leaving the protein, treating ourselves to cheat days. We forget that there is a new normal. The new normal is hard and it can be scary! But I am here to tell you that you can do it! You stuck to the program to get the surgery because you knew you had to do it for your health, for your well-being, for your life. This is the same. Right now you are only a few pounds away! Don't be defeated now! If you start now you are that much closer to your goal than if you don't change course! I believe you can do it. You don't have to give up! We all slip up. We all gain. What is most important, though, is that we can all fix our mistakes. Be honest with yourself, what can you change? Why are you sabotaging? Are you willing to change in order to feel better? It is hard to start, but once you do you will feel so much better. You will find more energy than you have now. It will get easier! You can stick to it and be successful! There are people who understand you! I am sorry that you are struggling, but I KNOW that you can overcome it! Yes, you CAN!
  23. I am 5 days post operation and I am wondering when and how much or how long I should start exercising - like walking outside or on a treadmill? I am dropping weight (8 pounds so far) but want to keep the momentum going and maybe start toning. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

    Getting Exercise after lapband

It's best to ask your Dr when and how much on exercise, though walking you could start anytime. My Dr released me back to the gym a week after surgery, but I had to avoid ab exercises until 6 weeks post-op. Great job on your weight loss, but remember, this time is for healing....don't let the scale rule you. I got 'stuck' for over a week at the same weight, but my body was changing during this time. Relax, take a deep breath, and follow your Dr's directions .
  25. Hi there wondering if anyone could please give me some info!! Here's my situation!! Since having my band my body reacts different too sugar. If I eat sugar it's like my body goes in shock and won't loose any weight. But if I avoid everything with sugar on a daily bases like for two weeks I can sometimes loose up too 4/5 kgs in like 14 days. Meaning I loose a couple grams of weight daily. If I eat any type of sugar I don't put any weight on but just won't loose those couple grams daily. It's hard coz I try be strong and I'm only like 10kgs too my goal weight but it's taking it's time. What could I do or tests or foods too eat that give me that sugar hit but are not real sugar?? It's hard too live everyday without sugar!! Pls help
