Need help looking for a good doctor in mexico
Tiffykins replied to NJKILLA31's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Insurance covered my revision from band to sleeve. If insurance would have denied my revision, hands down, no second thoughts, Dr. Aceves would be my only choice for Mexico surgeons. His reputation, the fact that you are in a fully licensed, certified hospital with a full ICU and blood bank on site. You remain in the hospital for 3 days with round the clock care. Your companion can stay in the private hospital room with you at no charge. Do your research, make sure you choose based on all information, and best wishes during your research. -

Gaining Weight Fast and Revision Question
catwoman7 replied to seldom78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've never had experience with this, but I know a lot of people who've had revisions from the band are REALLY happy they revised. -
That's a hard decision to make! I know I went into my first consultation thinking I wanted the band also... I left unsure, it took me a week (only) of research on both procedures side by side to make me realize how little I knew!! Truthfully I had never heard of the sleeve before my first consult with the bariatric surgeon. I would say go to the band forums and read their experiences....and most definitely read the band to sleeve revisions here! Good luck to you. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/forum/13-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/

How are you doing? I had a stricture at 7 weeks out. It was 97% closed and I couldnt eat anything but yogurt and cottage cheese without pain. They did the balloon stretching but perforated the stricture. I had open emergency surgery so they could revise the opening. It definitely wasnt fun at all.

telling family (kids) about surgery
Tiffykins replied to snickersgirl9's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have an extremely open relationship with my 11 year old son. He knew about my band surgery, and my revision. When he would worry about things, I would ask him things like " won't it be fun when you and me can run around the backyard without mommy needing a break?" "won't it be fun to go out to eat and mommy not have to scoot the table closer to you and daddy" "One day would you like to give mommy your own bear hug because right now you can't reach your arms around me" "Won't it be fun when mommy can go to the beach without worrying about being tired from running in the sand?" I gave him things to think about that are age appropriate. Something tangible that could he could envision. I know this is probably extreme for some families, but my son wanted to see a VSG video of the surgery so I let him watch it on youtube. He saw how quick it was, and he felt reassured. Nothing makes him blush, or get sick at his stomach, so this helped him to see that they don't cut people up from top to bottom to do this. I explained that there were going to be at least 3 doctors with many nurses taking care of me in the O.R. 2 surgeons, and the "gas" doctor to help me sleep through surgery. Caysen's had 2 surgeries himself so this is something we can talk about, and discuss openly. Worrying is normal. If y'all are spiritual, have him pray with you. My son and I prayed together before my surgery. I let him say the prayer so he could get his emotions out in the open without having to necessarily tell me, he was telling God instead. -

jennifer1 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi my name is Jennifer and I am looking to get a revision from my lap band to the sleeve. I often hear how your surgeon should be board certified...has anyone ever used a doctor that was not board certified. I have a doctor out of UIC in Chicago and unless i'm spelling his name wrong when I look him up it doesnt say he is board certified. Thoughts???? -

Anyone else indecisive?
RestlessMonkey replied to gtbadkitty's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
frauhowe, your post was really interesting to me. I realized something. At 53 (last year) my primary told me "Jeff, it's all about to go to hell for you. You've been "borderline" on lots of things for a while now, but unless you do something drastic, in 3 months you're going to be on diabetes and cholesterol medication. You are going downhill and as you age there is not a damn thing I can do about it, unless you lose some weight." Rather than depress me, it helped me decide that I wanted the lap band even if I paid for it out of pocket. That was the final straw for me. In 5-6 years, at 60, if I am thinner and still not a diabetic and still without heart trouble, then I will gladly have a revision surgery if I need it. I will probably be healthy enough to weather it, since I am losing with my band. I would never have initially had the courage to do a sleeve or bypass. Now, I am not so afraid. But for some of us, we have to have training wheels. I got the band thinking it was for life. I realize now that if it isn't, I can handle it. But what I couldn't handle was any more time at 405. For people who aren't on that ledge, as I was, the decision can be hard. I was always the "healthy" fat person, and it does catch up with you. -
Lapband Vs Sleeve Vs Bypass Surgery
SoccerMomma73 replied to hayleylamas's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
On that line let me say, when my band prolapsed (not because I'm a pig and did bad things but likely due to a GI bug...) I was supposed to revise to an RNY. When my surgeon got in to take the band out I had so much scarring and inflammation he couldn't do the revision at that time. He originally scheduled me for 12 months out but caved and did it after 6 months. I know of 2 banisters that had do much damage from their band that they've had to have them removed and are unable to have further bariatric surgeries....removable doesn't necessarily mean completely reversible. A point they seem to not share much when educating patients about the band. -
Lapband Vs Sleeve Vs Bypass Surgery
marfar7 replied to hayleylamas's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
4 yrs ago, at 248 lbs, I chose the lapand because it was reversable. Lost most of my weight within 2 yrs and then it slipped. My fault. Vomited almost everyday. Loved my band until it started causing me pain and nightime reflux (every single nite). After it was unfilled, I ended up gaining 30 lbs in a year. I chose to revise to the sleeve, rather than get a new band (not even sure my dr would do a 2nd band. He's not too keen on the band anymore).Soooo..... 4 1/2 mths ago, in 1 surgery, I revised to the sleeve. Wish I had done it in the first place instead of the lapband. No maintenance involved (had to drive 3 hrs each way and pay $180 for each fill/unfill frequently), no vomiting. I have the same restriction as I did when my band was working perfectly. I really didn't even consider the RNY because my bmi was 28 at the time of revision and I thought it was too drastic to lose 40 lbs. I want to be able to eat whatever I want and not have dumping. While I'm losing very slowly, I'm on my way down. I WILL get to my goal eventually. I have BOTH the lapband and the sleeve to thank for that. Good luck on ur decision. -

Here's my list Fish oil lemon flavor (yum) trying to fix my low good cholesterol Citracal petites 2 Breakfast 2 lunch Vitamin D 1000 IU (I work with breastfeeding moms and here in Illinois almost all women are deficient) Gummy multivites 2 Gummy B complex (new). I had trouble with the yellow pills. Couldn't stomach the taste And Bariatric chewable Iron 60 mg (I was deficient and am now weaning down. Also the gummies don't have iron which I somehow missed) And my allergy meds Please remember I am banded awaiting revision. I expect these will change slightly since I tolerate most pills for now. -
Anyone go to Mexico and have Gastric Bypass with Dr. Fernando Garcia?
@RealScoobyDoo replied to Lorilah's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I used Dr Garcia 3/2013. We were the first day of surgery at Florence Oasis Hospital (I think they changed to a different one.) great experience 100%. But I'm going back for a revision to Mini Bypass, and Dr Garcia is a lot more than other surgeons. Anyone have any recommendations? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Anyone go to Mexico and have Gastric Bypass with Dr. Fernando Garcia?
wlsme replied to Lorilah's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I'm in the process of booking my sleeve to bypass revision with Dr Garcia. He did my sleeve in April 2, 2013. I hit my lowest weight at 157 and then gained back and now at 190 again. My only regret is that I didn't go with the RNY bypass the first time around. I have horrible gerd (common with the sleeve for some) and little restriction. Starting weight was 240 before sleeve surgery. Booking around Jan of Feb 2017. Reach out if anyone going to be there then!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Bullied into the Sleeve
GwennyPenny replied to tonibella21's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had no choice because of previous abdominal surgeries and adhesions so I had the RNY bypass four months ago. I have a lot if friends who have had the sleeve and ate happy. I don't personally know anyone who has had the bypass which was why I joined the group. The only one that seems to be a huge issue now is the band. Some with the sleeve choose to revise and have the bypass down the track for various reasons. I'm kind of glad I had the bypass because as the surgeon said I don't need to be doing it again. I had a hiatus hernia that was found and fixed during surgery which was good. Go with what you and your surgeon think is best. Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Bye Bye Lap Band! Approved!

I am having a band to RNY revision on May 15th. Have you had your surgery yet? We hare the same fears! -
My doctor actually was happy to hear I wanted the bypass and not the sleeve, and my BMI is 37. Every doctor is different. Mine, in particular, said the exact thing you did: he’s seen people needing a revision or going to the bypass down the road. And not that folks aren’t successful with the sleeve, because people can gain with bypass too. However, for my dr, it is less frequently seen. I’m sorry you had that experience! You need to be comfortable and welcomed by your dr and the office staff. It is probably better you find someone else, for your own piece of mind. I can’t imahine letting someone operate on me that I wasn’t totally grooving with

Good for you! I know what that feels like. I remember the day I decided I wasn't going to waste another 6 months fighting my insurance company over the revision. It was freeing and I knew that making t he decision was the first step. My sleeve is really working well. Visited my doctor today and am down 28 pounds. She was amazed. And jealous, she's got the lap band and wished she had a sleeve. She actually sent her parents for sleeves about a year ago. A new life lies ahead for you!

I've read here a lot of people find wearing a compression garment helps. Also, one or two people on here have gone for the panniculectomy with a view to a revision to a nicer finish later on. Losing Jusme doesnt post anymore, but lopped the tummy off earlier on in the peace, which gave her the freedom to exercise and achieve her goals. She's had a baby recently, but she was always planning on going back and having it revised at a later date. If its causing you these sorts of problems, it may be something that's covered. It must be awful, my ordinary sized breasts gave me hell when I ran early on, its soooo good since they shrunk to C cups.

Bypass or sleeve
SleeveandRNYchica replied to buttercupdobbs's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I am going through the revision process now. But they are still making me meet all requirements past the 2 year mark and even with it being medically necessary. My sleeve is twisted.... So frustrating -
Here is the thing, if you get heartburn or reflux at all the sleeve can make that much worse very quickly. You must do your research and quickly. I have read so many posts from people that made the decision to go with the sleeve even though it was recommended to do bypass and now they are having revisions to bypass anyway. I originally had planned to go sleeve and after my doctor recommended bypass I was devastated. Then I researched the heck out of it and came to the conclusion that I was only going through this once if I could help it. I went with bypass and have not regretted it once. I can eat anything I want, have never had dumping syndrome, have exceeded my weight loss expectations. I was removed off all heartburn and reflux medication within one month post op and have never had a single episode of heartburn/reflux/herd. Good luck, and please do your research quickly.
