  1. @..... I did a ton of research on my surgeon and I also know 6 people who in the past year and a half have all had their surgeries with him with zero problems and nothing but raving reviews. I am 1 day post op and couldn't have been more impressed with the whole process, my care I have received and Dr. Almanza. Truly makes me thing that the owner of this app wasn't getting the money he wanted from Dr Almanza and that's why he's attempting to smear his name. None of the concerns he expressed and rebuttals in the comments were true from my experience, the experience of my friends. Or the new friends I have made while here. I am feeling better than expected and am excited about what's to come. I would send my closest love ones to Almanza with ZERO concern. There was a lady here for a revision and he refused her surgery and money because he did an X-ray and doesn't feel she needs it. I have Crohn's disease and he spent an hour asking me questions and then spent an additional hour on my surgery to make sure he was extra careful. Thank you for thinking of me though and sending this to me. But I am very happy with my decision and did a ton of research and his praises far outweigh his criticisms on every forum. Good luck on your surgery!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  3. 1. My sister is an RN and had sleeve surgery while working in a busy ER, if I remember correctly she took a month off bc of the lifting pushing and pulling she needed to be able to do. I was cleared for all that at my 1 mo po (I have a desk job but freelance as an EMT). My sister sometimes forgot to eat when she was working a busy shift, she had to start setting reminders to stop and eat during her 12 hr shifts. 3. In my packet it indicated that sleeve patients should never allow blind NG tubes be inserted, they need to be X-ray guided. Not sure if that's a thing from my surgeon but I wouldn't want them to punch a hole through my new stomach on accident. 4. I asked my surgeon what his rate of complications was and he indicated that they do happen rarely, mostly from pts not doing what they are supposed to but he said I had to keep an open mind that occasionally a revision to bypass is needed if there are complications with the sleeve. That's always in the back of my mind but so far, knock on wood, no issues for me my surgeon and his team have been excellent (I'm in upstate NY). In a month and a half I've lost 32 pounds and I started with a low BMI of 35, I'm off my HTN meds and feeling great. Good luck, it's a lot to take in but do your research and you should be ok with what ever you decide!
  4. If you have GERD then go with RNY gastric bypass surgery. Sleeve will only make this condition worse. Several members on this board have undergone revisions from sleeve to RNY gastric bypass because of this problem. I am over 3 years post-op RNY surgery. The main reason why I had the surgery was because of medical issues. I had high blood pressure, diabetes, GERD and sleep apnea along with other conditions. All these conditions went into remission within weeks/days after surgery. I am off all the prescription medicines that I was taking for these conditions. Life is good. By the way I am 68 years old. I take a regiment of vitamins each day and periodically my blood is analyzed to ensure that my vitamin intake is correct. So my nutrient levels are well balanced and fine tweeked. My bones seemed fine. I do little projects around the house. Last year I moved 100,000 pounds of gravel by hand along with around 60,000 pounds of concrete blocks and this year I moved about the same amount.
  5. Not sure from the title of your post whether or not you have GERD? If you do, the sleeve is likely not the best procedure for you. Check with your surgeon on this. The sleeve can make GERD worse resulting in a revision to bypass. It is the reason i had bypass, I had my heart set on the sleeve and then was told it was not the best solution for my health issues. I had my RNY over two years ago. I am 53. I had type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, severe gerd and worst of all stage 3 kidney disease. I also have psoriatic arthrits, Osteo arthritis and hypothyroid. Within 3 months my diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and severe gerd were completely GONE. My kidney disease was in remission and liver function went back to normal. Within 12 months my sleep apnea was gone. I was off all medications for those issues with the exception of my thyroid replacement and biologics for my Psoriatic arthritis. I of course now take calcium citrate, a multi Vitamin, Vitamin D, vitamin b1 and vitamin b12. It is alot less expensive for me, I lost all of my excess weight and other than my lousy back, I feel fantastic. Years younger......prior to losing my weight i felt like I was dying every day. Try not to worry, just educate yourself. Get on line, go to support groups, talk to those on forums like this. It will help you know everything you need to know to get healthy and stay healthy. Best of luck to you!
  6. Thank you for your suggestion however, I've gone to 3 different surgeons...you see of the limited amount of surgeons that do revisions, there is just a handful of reputable ones that revise to the DS. The surgeon I'm seeing now is said to be the best on the East coast...he doesn't feel it is safe to do anything but the distal RNY on me...I'm in NJ and the other surgeons on the East coast are 3+ hours away and I don't have the financial ability to travel more then a few hours...the best one is pit in CA but that's not even considerable...so basically it's the distal RNY or nothing Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  7. Ugh...I'm hoping for a revision also. Had my band for 6 years. Having pain just to the left of my Sternum. Complete unfill due to pain, reflux, vomitting. 2 months later (just last week) had endoscopy. Surgeon said I had a small hernia and took biopsies. Will see what is found. He wants to try to work with the band some more unless findings from biopsies show something different. I have regained ALL of my preop weight. Just want this to be resolved. Obsessive dynamic with food...

I agree. I met with my program's dietitian on Friday (I'm a sleeve to bypass revision because of severe reflux) and she feels I'm walking down the slippery slope again. since my revision in July, my calories have been below 1000. With my activity level and the fact that my surgery didn't really change my capacity much, she's concerned I'm not eating enough. So, it looks like I'm going down the path I walked last year and hoping to reign in my eating disorder before it again starts to impact my health. It was really eye opening to talk to the program's therapist the first time. I can't remember the exact conversation, but I said something and his response was "and there it is . . . would you like to say hello to your eating disorder??" It took that conversation to shake me mentally awake and realize all I was doing was exchanging one eating disorder (overeating) for another (exercise bulimia/severe calorie restriction) I do believe, and have expressed this to my surgeon, that patients should be required to have some sort of therapy post surgery (if not required, then it should definitely be made available.) The program's therapist said that approximately 15% of patients end up with some form of disordered eating after surgery. In my mind, this number is too high.

Just got revision from sleeve to bypass!

    CIGNA Help

Yes, call!!! I had to keep on my insurance too. I have BCBS, and it's a long story, but I had to fight my surgeon's office to even submit because they ladies in the office didn't believe I would be approved despite insurance giving me the policy requirements in writing and even calling them on 3 way. They lady at my surgeon's office thought I needed to meet initial patient requirements but I'm a revision patient. In the end, my surgeon TOLD his office manager to send it. I am a teacher and my insurance is changing in January. My main policy will be the same, but I'm losing a secondary coverage, so my out of pocket would've been really high versus none at all. Also, I am using Christmas break for recovery so I don't miss as much work. I totally understand the urgency and frustration you are going through! Remember that you are your own advocate and don't worry about pushing them. This is a service they provide and you and your employer pay for it. Get results! Best of luck and keep us posted! Telling family/friends?

This is exactly what I've done with my revision from sleeve to bypass. I only told close family and a few friends about the band... word got around anyway. This time the ONLY people who know about the bypass are my husband and best friend. Those who knew about the band... I told them it caused internal damage and I had it removed, and surgically repairing that damage is why I'm on a restricted diet. People think WLS surgery is cheating. All the weight I lost with the band was MY work. The band never did anything for me. So I'm taking full credit this time.

    Telling family/friends?

I'm keeping my revision from band to sleeve a secret from everyone except my husband and immediate family. Only my best friends and family knew about my band, and most of them didn't really understand, that's why my sleeve is remaining hush hush.
  15. I had a plication revised to RNY on 11/28. Apparently the plication was a mess-totally distorted, bulging and blockages, hernia, ulcers, plus esophageal erosions. Dead tissue was pretty ugly and he had to remove part of stomach. So glad I had all that fixed. I'm only five days out but the pain is not bad. I've been taking liquid Tylenol twice a day. Today I took it only once. Only problem is diarrhea last two days. I think from drinking too large a quantity at once. I'm tired of sips and it's hard to swallow pills with small sips. I started Protein drinks today, in addition to Clear liquids. I've cut way down on medications-yay! Good luck with your recovery! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Awesome that is good to hear you are home and healing. I know this process will be rough for me but definitely ready. Still no regrets just can't take the oain anymore. Dec 27th is my revision date ! Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App
  17. It's true that many people do regain weight and chose to have a revision but it was not the surgery that "failed". But let's leave that issue aside for now. Your best chance of long term success is making sure that you go into the surgery educated and prepared . Take the classes at the bariatric center and consider taking a "lifestyle" class as well. I did and the 6 months I spent working on my food issues and learning new skills, like chewing and actually tasting my food, drinking Water, and even just using small dishes, it was the best thing I could have done. I didn't ask him what he thought before I started the process (I have never asked "permission" to do anything in 40 years of marriage). My husband was supportive of the idea of surgery but have been a basket cast since I had it. Let your husband know that you want and need his support but did nth let his opinion determine what you decide to do. No one asked this yet but is your husband also overweight?

Just got revision from sleeve to bypass!

Hi. I actually had a revision from Gastric Plication (2014) to RNY on Nov 28. I'm five days out. The plication had caused a lot of problems. It went horribly wrong. Caused a bulging and a blockage. A lot of tissue died. I also had severe reflux that caused erosions, ulcers and increased my risk for esophageal cancer. There was also a hernia. I'm so glad I had this revision and I regret being foolish enough to have had the plication. The pain from the RNY is not as bad and the nausea is WAY better than the first surgery. As far as weight, all I know at this poinis that I lost 4.4 lbs from after RNY day of surgery to next day. I'm still on Clear liquids, but added Protein drinks today. I'm sure I've lost more weight, but not going to check until post-op class on Tuesday. Have had diarrhea since yesterday and took an Imodium a while ago which doesn't seem to have helped yet! It's hard figuring out how much I can drink and how long I have to wait in-between. Just trying to sip every few minutes now. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  19. I was one who is denied by insurance and required to jump through hoops. They required 6 months physician supervised dieting and two visits to a psychologist. My doctor was getting ready to put me on medication. Since I already knew I didn't tolerate statins, I was going to self pay to get it done. My secondary, Tricare, stepped up and paid every dime and all that was required was one visit to psychologist and two visits with a nutritionist which could be done in 4-6 weeks. My doctor was booked up that far anyway so it worked out well plus you have to do your pre op testing and diet. I was 80 lbs over, 61 y/o, high BP, high A1C, high cholesterol. Sept 1 was my surgery and today I am 50 lbs down, which includes my 2 week pre op diet. BP down and my primary care said everything else would normalize since it was diet and weight related. They are many people that just dropping off that 50/60 lbs, or less, is enough to get them off their diabetic meds. Several people I know have had bands and have problems with it so sometimes a revision to the sleeve keep their weight off and maintain their health is necessary. My dr was Dr Cribbins in Plano, Texas. My daughter used him as well and was self pay because her insurance had an exclusion for WLS. Yes, you can schedule quicker if they have room on the schedule because of the time it takes going through insurance. Tricare approved me in just a few days. So, that being said, not everyone who has WLS has to weigh 250 lbs or more. Then again, a good surgeon knows who needs the surgery. I had taken one year of medical records from my primary with me to my first appointment. Everyone needs to do their research before choosing a doc!! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    December bypass buddies

December 27th ! Revision sleeve to bypass 4 years post op ,???? Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App
  21. This is one of my concerns with the "self pay" route. I completely understand that some insurance plans don't cover WLS and there needs to be a self pay option. On the other hand I have seen people: who are 50-60 pounds over weight getting WLS. getting questionable "revisions". choosing self pay because their insurance denied them or required them to "jump through hoops" Seems like some minimal requirements, like maybe a referral from your primary care provider, Should be required for getting major surgery instead of a credit card with a high spending limit. There is a thread here started a few days ago by a woman who went to a surgeon for a pre op interview who was told she could have surgery the NEXT DAY if she had the funds. Another case of greed trumping ethics.
  22. I wonder who would cry harder someone offended by my opinion that having a revision without addressing the underlying issue that caused the regaining of the weight or the 2 young children who don't have a father because he died of complications from a surgery that would not have had the desired outcome even if it hadn't killed him. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. I revised to rny and am only mad I didn't do it sooner. My pouch is bigger than the usual rny pouch because the band stretches the stomach. Honestly, I'm about 9 weeks post op and feel perfect. All the annoying band issues, gone...I feel like my pouch is the perfect size actually. Can't imagine it being 1/2 this size. Down 46lbs today...can't wait to see where this takes me.
  24. I'm sending this out to those who have been revised from band to RNY for several years now. But anyone who has had RNY who would like to chime in are welcomed as well. I'm curious about loss after regain. Does it get harder the longer out you get? I'm over a year out and have gone up just slightly (a couple of pounds) but I'm getting back on track. Those of you even further out, is it hard to lose that regain? Is it easier to stay on track?

    Band vs Sleeve

I think you absolutely could still be going strong at 10 years (just don't get pregnant ) Yes I did get an de-fil during pregnancy. complications started after when i started getting my fills back in. I never got to the same fill level as before the pregnancy and felt terrible! the acid reflux was unbearable it was especially frustrating because part of the marketing was this is perfect for young women because if you get pregnant yada yada. Prior to pregnancy i dropped down to a weight I was happy with and maintained for 4 years (160-170). I got a partial de-fill to frankly survive and basically stayed at my pregnancy weight (which was halfway between my maintenance and high weight). Still had reflux but figured I just needed to live with it. what was weird for me post pregnancy was the daily variability in restriction. in the morning I struggled to get liquid in, at dinner I could eat a 4oz steak with no issues (I would have preferred the opposite to be honest). It never occurred to me that I could get a revision. Then one day I woke up starving and i knew something was wrong. booked a fill appointment and they said the band was empty...that is when i started doing my research and finding out I was not alone and instead of re-banding which i was initially considering, i did a revision. I was at 11 years when it broke. Re: user error: Erosion, slippage and port issues accounted for the majority of re-surgeries so by looking at the studies you can't say user error is the #1 reason. you could make a case that slippage is more likely when there is not enough fill and erosion surgeon error, not user error and port issues...nope. The swedish study gives more detailed data about the actual reasons for revision. Most lap band patients I've seen (anecdotally only) got revisions because of complications, not lack of weight loss. I'm working really hard to get down to my band low weight, unfortunately for me the data shows that revision patients don't get the same weight loss results as first time RNYers...I'm hoping to be one of the exceptions, because of my success with the band, which you just have to work harder at. so I'm used to that. I'm hoping that will translate to me being successful with RNY. I'm halfway to the top of the low weight range i maintained for so many years!
