Hi everyone hope everyone is doing well as they can in the current pandemic situation. I have been absent for a while, due to personal circumstances, I’m currently facing another difficult situation, and I would really appreciate some advice I had a sleeve in January 2018, (abroad paid privately so have had no support or any help post surgery on return to the UK) initially I lost about 20 kg slowly over the year (from 95kg to 76kg) my weight loss stopped after the first year or so, however 3 years later im now 83 kg hungry all the time and feeling incredibly stressed and emotional and really worried where this is going, I have spoke to a few surgeons abroad, my options are a gastric bypass but im so worried that is this the right decision for me, my sleeve didn’t get me to my target of 55kg from 95kg, I only lost half and slowly regaining I’d really appreciate some advice /help/ experiences of other members Thankyou x
  2. I am down 21lbs currently, my first month is tomorrow. Yes i feel it has been slow moving for me as well.. My first 2 weeks I have lost 7lbs, then 3 lbs the last 2 weeks. Congrats on hitting 41lb weight loss. @ksgypsy
  3. I have hypothyroidism as well. I feel as though my weight loss has been slow. My 3 months is on February 4th and I'm down 41lbs. I'm happy that the 41 is gone but the last few weeks have been 2lbs per week. Hopefully it will pick back up soon!

    Stall

just stick to your plan and stay off your scale. Your weight loss WILL start up again. Trust me. No need to do anything with your calories. I would answer this differently if you were several months out and had stalled for more than a month, but with you being less than a month out, no. This early stall happens to everyone, and it typically lasts 1-3 weeks. Just stay the course and follow your surgeon's plan. you're in a different position than the original poster since you're 10 months out. Six weeks is a bit long for a stall - you may be in maintenance. Are you still tracking all your food? I would think you'd still be losing at 750-900 calories. I guess it COULD be a really long stall = in which case, it might be worth it to switch things up like the others have said - but if you're not still weighing/measuring and tracking your food, I'd start with that..
  5. Wondering if anyone would like to share their journey getting pregnant within a few months post op from the VSG surgery? How did the weight loss work while growing a baby? Did you still notice your body changing? Did you lose weight after the baby was born? Thank you!

    Stall

I would like to know too. I am in my 10th month...1 have stalled for the last 6 weeks... no gains or loss... what should I do? My calories are from 750- 900
  8. I am doing the bypass for my Hiatal Hernia which caused GERD and Esophageal Spasms. Due to my weight the standard procedure is not an option. As my insurance coverage does not cover "weight loss surgery or medications" it was a 10 month multi appeal process to get my surgery approved. I do hope your post surgery is going well! Mine is scheduled for March 10th.

    Regrets

A lot of women experience screwed-up hormones for the first few months after surgery (e.g., irregular periods - due to lots of estrogen being released from fat cells during rapid weight loss, as BigSue said), but yours sounds more extreme than most. You could always check with a gynecologist to be sure that's what it is - if nothing else, for peace of mind. If that IS what's going on, it's temporary. I think the preoccupation with weight and eating is pretty normal among WLS patients, esp the first year. To be honest, I'm still like that to some extent, even at almost six years out.

    Hair loss

Naturally, I'm really concerned about hair loss as well. I lost a lot previously due to PCOS, but over the last year and a half it has grown back and thickened up a ton...still a little thin on my temples but it's barely noticeable. I'm seriously considering shaving my head if I lose a ton of hair. I've always wanted to anyways and I think this would be a good excuse. Does anyone have any other suggestions for hair styles to mask bald spots or thinning areas? I'll probably still shave it...and bleach it. You only live once, right?

    Liver scarring

I am certainly no expert on this (not even an MD!) but what I have learned over the years in this is that obesity is one major factor in liver disease, much of which is reversible if the obesity is reversed, so you are on the right road here. It is not surprising that he found some liver damage - it's fairly common in our obese population (and is why many surgeons impose those "liver shrinking" pre-op diets. My surgeon started out doing liver transplants, and moved into adding bariatrics as a means of treating the disease before it gets to his transplant table. Again, you are on the right path to helping yourself. Now, rapid weight loss imposes an additional stress on the liver as it is a key component in metabolizing all that fat that we are losing, so it would not be unusual for liver numbers to be wonky during this phase. This also means that we should avoid adding any more stress to the liver during this time, so that means avoiding alcohol while you are losing weight (preferably longer than that or even forever, but at least during the loss phase.) This is not a temperance or morality play, but just our physiology (we frequently get new posters in these forums, a couple of weeks out from surgery asking when they can start drinking again...) Talk to your surgeon about this when you see him again, but I suspect that you will get much the same story from him. If he is real concerned, he may send you to a hepatologist (liver doc) but most likely it will be something that is just monitored for a while and correct itself as your weight comes off and stabilizes.

    The dreaded stalls.... Help

I stalled around 10 weeks post-op. Just couldn't get the scale to move down. I bought a case of 1 Liter Smart Water at B.J's and started drinking 2 full bottles/day. That truly ended the stall and I've lost 5 lbs. in the past two weeks. I know I'm not eating as much and I attribute that to drinking more water every day. Not sure if it was the cure to the stall, but it sure kick started my continued loss.

    1 year surgeversary

Hello there! Congratulations! Has anyone found that you have loss too much weight with the gastric bypass?

    Regrets

While I can't comment on menstruation, this is definitely true. Counting and measuring everything becomes an obsession during the weight loss phase, and you can let go of it to a large extent in maintenance. By then, you more or less know what you should be eating and what works for you.

    Regrets

Sorry you're having these problems. I'm glad you posted your story here because I think it's important for people to go into this surgery with their eyes wide open, knowing the potential pros and cons. Before my surgery, I looked for people who regretted it because I wanted to be fully aware of the worst-case scenario. I had a lot of trouble finding people who regretted it -- even most people who had horrible complications said they would do it all over again! I think this is partly because the people who are glad they had the surgery are the ones who post about it and make videos about it (and of course the fact that the vast majority of people who have the surgery are happy with it). I hope that your problems improve. I've read that a lot of WLS patients have menstrual changes because estrogen and other hormones are stored in fat, and fast weight loss results in the release of these hormones into the bloodstream. I'm not a doctor, of course, but I would guess there's a good chance that this problem will go away eventually. I definitely think it's worth talking to your OB/GYN if you haven't already. As for the preoccupation with your weight and eating, I think that's something that will lessen over time as you get used to your new body and your new life, but if not, maybe you could look into counseling. I'll be interested to see how you feel a year from now. I certainly hope it gets better and you come to be happy with your decision to get the surgery.

    Goal rewards—suggestions?

Yep, a new hair day for sure, though I don't think I'm going to tie it to a specific weight-loss goal. It'll be more like, "I'm 2 months out, it's time for a haircut to hide the thinning!"
  17. After my sleeve (2014), I also ended up in the hospital for dehydration. I had surgery Nov. 2014 and distinctly remember sitting in my living room in May 2015 feeling like I had no energy, still struggled with vomiting when I ate certain foods and overall felt "skinny" but very tired. In September of that year, I went on a two week vacation, and realized that I felt great! I could eat out, had a ton of energy and my weight loss had leveled out. So somewhere between 6 and 9 months after surgery, I felt like I had finally recuperated from surgery, adjusted to my new stomach and could really do anything I wanted to do. That also seem to coincide with that "honeymoon" period that you always hear about - that period of rapid weight loss after bariatric surgery. Unfortunately, after the honeymoon, I had to serious watch what I ate so that I didn't start regaining the weight I had lost. You've had a lot of health issues that have only made your surgery recovery even harder. Hang in there...….you will get better each day!
  18. I liked to cook/bake well enough before WLS, but AFTER it, I developed a LOVE/ OBSESSION / ALL-CONSUMING DESIRE to cook/bake (as well as all the planning, shopping, researching that goes along with it. not to mention sharing the goods with fam and friends and watching them eat it!) I'm not sure this was totally because of wls (but i'm sure it had a big part of it), but also because circumstances allowed me more time to indulge in my interests (change in work, and then pandemic, and then stopped working altogether). I am the family cook/food provider, to 3 thin, fit, active people who eat truckloads of food. During weight loss phase, I got whomever was around to taste the food; if there was no one around, then I would just take my chances and hope it was ok. If I REALLY needed to taste it, I would, but spit it out. Towards the end of weight loss phase and into maintenance I no longer required the help of the fam tasters, and would taste it myself AND sometimes swallow, lol. Now, 2+ years out, I taste and swallow everything, AND will often times actually eat the final product as well! I will eat (beyond tasting) maybe 20% of the savoury stuff I make for fam meals, but I eat (beyond tasting) 100% of the desserts. I recently became a lover of bread baking, and even started eating bread because of it (which was weird because I didnt have any legitimate (fluffy) bread for like two years...i did have crackers and other small hard type bread products though) I sometimes make sugar-substitute no/low carb stuff, but I will almost always make an larger-portioned, "normal" version for the fam as well. Of course, its not like I eat even close to the amounts that I did pre-wls. While before I would have eaten 10 cookies in one sitting , now I'll eat like 1/2 of one. Instead of 4 slices of sour dough, I'll eat like 1/4 slice, instead of 1/2 an entire fruit pie, I'll have 1/2 a slice, instead of 3 butter tarts, I'd take a bite off someones, and so on, and so on.... (ooooh now i want to bake something...lol) .......soooo so long as i don't stuff myself with huge amounts and keep within my maintenance calories (i track EVERYTHING), then its all good (which is basically what I've been doing for the past 1.5+ years of maintenance)
  19. I just had mine this past Wednesday ... I was terrified! And I'm a retired high school teacher (in other words I'm hard to scare haha). Sleepless nights the week before, no partner allowed in the hospital, waiting in that cold pre-op waiting room ... But the feeling of relief during the recovery in my hospital room was enormous. It's not a trivial thing and it requires a lot of fortitude and determination ... which we all know a LOT about as that's what we've been told our whole damn life that we needed more of to succeed at controlling our weight (and which leads to our loss of self-esteem and depression which we use food to control yada yada yada). Hang in there and message me if you like.
  20. I set mine in increments, so like reward at -50, then -75, -100. Currently I’m -46 so come on -50! My rewards list: New hair day New tattoo day clothes shopping And for my husband and I both (he only has 30lbs to lose of course lol) we want an exercise bike to add to our home gym.
  21. Hi, My Situation is very similar to yours. In my early 30s, after I had my second child my weight began to soar. I tried every diet and yo-yo’ed for years until I was able to have VSG last summer at the age of 68. The surgery and recovery was easy and after almost 6 months out I’ve lost about 47 pounds. If I had been more diligent, my loss would’ve been greater..... but those old demons of snacking on chips and candy are still a reality, even after surgery. I had a lot of questions about having surgery as a senior but doctors and friends have shown me the fight is the same for all of us! I’m sure you will be very happy with your journey and progress to a whole new better you.
  22. Okay...I’m sure there are other amateur bakers/chefs and professionals out there too, who have had WLS. I am one month post op and have began to bake again. I’m just a home baker that makes sweet treats for friends, family...nothing too fancy. I have been making cookies for an upcoming fundraiser and for a friend. I’ve recently changed my sugar cookie recipe, so it required tasting. Same with my icing, it’s how I know it’s at the right place. So with that said, it’s been little dips to taste, and I did pinch off one piece of a baked to taste how the texture came out. All that to say....I didn’t count any of it in my daily, just acknowledging that I did taste those things. However, I did notice a blood sugar spike (on an insulin pump), so I must have consumed enough for the spike. How as a baker/cook/chef do you manage tasting but maintaining a weight loss strategy? Sweets aren’t a trigger for me, cereal is, so even though my plan allows unsweetened cereal, I avoid cereal all together both to eat and bake with.

One Month Post-Op Weight Loss Question

20lbs in the first month is awesome. As long as you remember to eat slow and follow the instructions they gave you, and stop when full, you are doing well. Everyone is different. But a net loss every month is progress. Don't forget it took you a while to gain the weight, so in reverse, the same will hold true. But stay positive. You are doing great!!
  24. My revision took over 5 hours as well. My doctor said I had a lot of scar tissue. The sleeve the first time only took him 45 minutes. He says this is somewhat common for it to happen. I had lots of post op complications as well. Ive lost a lot though so aside from being nauseas all the time the weight loss was markedly better this time around.
  25. I would not eat this - I have to be very very careful with artificial sweeteners. It has erythritol and sorbitol both which cause me to have the runs really really really badly. I cannot drink any of the weight loss shakes or meal replacers or these "diet bars" no zero calorie sweetened yogurt, no low cal/low sugar ice creams unless I read the ingerdients really carefully. Anyone with celiac disease of gluten intolerance also should be VERY careful with these.
