    Food Aversions After Surgery

I am 10 weeks post op and I don’t know if this counts as a good aversion but right now everything I eat tates horrible. I have been cleared to eat just about whatever I want but I can only tolerate fruit, a few tortilla chips and sugar free popsicles. Does anyone have any tips on restoring my taste buds?

    Exercise Before Surgery

I didn’t exercise before surgery & I didn’t after either. Just upped my daily activities & changed some routines (park further away, make multiple trips up & down my stairs to carry groceries, walk up escalators, walk at a pace, etc.). Sure I use resistance bands & do some stretches now but that’s really for my back & to keep me limber - I wouldn’t burn 30 calories. Not exercising didn’t hinder my weight loss or maintenance (lost more than my goal & have maintained with about a kilogram regain from my lowest weight - am four years post surgery). I also ‘exercise snack’. That is I do my stretches, etc. in short batches about 4 times a day 5-10 minutes each. They say this is just as beneficial as doing a single period of activity. You may find that easier on your body. Exercising only accounts for about 10% of any weight you are to lose. So want to lose 100lbs, exercising may only help you lose about 10lbs. Of course there are many other benefits to being active. Try using resistance bands to build strength, look into the you tube videos about exercises for those with mobility issues. A lot are done seated or lying down. Water based activities may be useful. Try one of those recumbent exercise bikes (hire before you buy) as they put less pressure on your joints.
  3. I feel your pain. Same thing is happening to me. Had surgery June 19th, lost 10 more lbs, and have been stalled for the past 15 days. Everyone on here, though, says to just keep on trucking. As disheartening as it may be, it's very normal. Not that that makes us feel any better, huh? Just know you're not alone in your stall or in how you feel. Sometimes upping your calories and your physical activity will break the stall. That's what I'm trying, but I'm only gonna weigh myself on Sundays. Wishing you the best of luck!

    Exercise Before Surgery

exercise is great for overall health, but it really doesn't make a significant difference in weight loss (some difference - yes - but weight loss is 90% food intake, and only 10% exercise). If you're running marathons or spending half the day in the gym, well, yes - but hardly anyone has time for that. Exercise supposedly is more effective when trying to maintain weight. Suffice it to say, it's probably not going to make a significant difference - and if it hurts, don't do it. I have arthritis, which is a gazillion times better now that I'm 200 lbs lighter, but I've always done aqua fitness classes - even when I weighed almost 400 lbs. Swimming, water aerobics, or anything in water is very easy on the joints and is often recommended for people who have arthritis. So that's a possibility if you want to exercise and have that option. Otherwise, walking is always good as long as you can tolerate it.

    Exercise Before Surgery

I didn't do any exercise before surgery, mostly because I was working crazy hours at work getting me out of daily tasks in case I was not able to get back to work as soon as I hoped. I didn't really do any exercise after surgery either, except for walking. My spouse and I after a couple months were walking 8-10 miles 4 days a week, mostly on the Las Vegas strip. Once I got to only 100 pounds overweight I decided to challenge myself to a running program similar to the 'Couch to 5K' (C25K) which get's you running 5k (about 3 miles) in a month. Turned out I enjoyed running and kept doing it, virtually every day and eventually up to 90 miles per week. Exercise for it's own sake is not something I care to do. Doing things that I enjoy that are also exercise is what works for me. I wish I could still run, but that ship sailed 15 years ago when my chronic pain issues reared it's ugly head. On your pain meds, you obviously take them for a reason. After surgery after you aren't carrying a lot of extra weight it may be possible to reduce or eliminate them. For me, the pain meds allow me to be active enough to care for my spouse. Good luck. Tek

Is it dumping or just upset stomach

I wondered if it could be a lactose intolerance which we can develop post wls. Diarrhoea, bloating, wind are the usual symptoms an hour or so after eating lactose. Sugar alcohols (in some artificial sweeteners) can do the same thing. And yes, as the others have said, dumping has many more symptoms which are temporarily debilitating. I don’t know about the beef. I was easily eating steak & pork pretty soon out after solid foods (probably from around weeks 9 or 10). But we are all different & our tummies can be fussy & sensitive for a time about certain foods.

    July 2023 buddies

This will be short as I am physically and mentally exhausted. My sleeve op was a success HOWEVER I am still in hospital and not expected to be released until Friday (19 days vs 2 days) as I suffered severe pancreatis. My blood work is starting to show improvement but I'm signed off work until end of August and it could take up to six months to recover.
  10. speaking of yogurt, this one is my FAVE. it's SuPEr thick and lusciously creamy but u pay for it in calories (200 cals for 3/4 cup serving, and 10% fat!)...but sooo good.. i just buy the plain though, i find flavoured yogurts too sweet.
  11. Highest weight: 346 Weight the day of surgery: 316.4 Current weight: 266 It’s been 9 months since I had the sleeve and I’ve only lost 50 lbs. I‘ve expressed my concern with my surgeon, and she seemed somewhat concerned. She put me on Phentermine which helped me lose 10 lbs but that’s about it. I can’t eat as much as I used to, but I can still eat quite a bit before feeling full which scares me. I portion my food out to try to avoid overeating. I’m not sure what more to do. I don’t have any health issues other than being obese. I’ve been feeling really defeated about this. Does anyone have any advice on maybe kickstarting the weight loss again or maybe taking a different route for another surgery?
  12. July 15th marked my 4th year post VSG to RNY I started with VSG in 2017 and was converted to RNY IN 2019. There seems to be more revision post lately but not a lot of long term revisioners or info floating around so feel free to ask me anything!
  13. I’m about 10 weeks post surgery. At what point can you drink liquids with food? With the summer being here, after I come back for a walk, I’d like to drink some water and heat up dinner. Pretty frustrating I have to wait 30-45 minutes before I can eat and it’s already a long work day.
  14. I am currently 10 days post op Vsg. I don’t seem to have any restriction when eating. Has anyone experienced this ?

Been my go to breakfast every morning. I make 10 cups of coffee, mix half of french vanilla in 5 cups then when i am ready I do the other 5 cups and mix the other half !!! have fun
  17. With that I do not see how your getting 40 carbs a day. I know you said under 40 grams of carbs a day and that would for sure be under. I am not sure what a swiss cheese wedge is where are your carbs are coming from? I am only getting the 4 or so carbs in the shake 2 times a day so it has to be under 10 for me.. I am worried about the 3 week stale myself because been doing so good and I would hate to slow down right now. I have access to 15 floors in my apartment building so I just walk up and down the stairs for 27 min in the morning and evening for exercise. I can start my free weight lifting again in 8 more days the dr told me 4 weeks after surgery I can start back weight lifting. I started doing the flights of stairs a week after surgery. Maybe we are over thinking it all.. LOL
  18. First surgery / Lost 55lbs with pre surgery diet in 5 months doing atkins / low carb. They only told me no coffee first 2 weeks. Then ok and said max 3 cups a day. I handle it great no problems. I did wait 2 weeks before trying any. I am only eating the ensure max protein shake in the morning mixed in the coffee. Protein shake by itself for lunch. 2 eggs or a can of tuna or half a can of chicken chunk breasts for dinner. keeping it simple and I am hardcore. Not counting calories at all.. I am counting protein and carbs.. Keeping carbs under 10 grams a day and you can calculate the protein its a lot.. They took my cigs. they took my weeed.. they are not taking my coffee
  19. I am 22 days out gastric bypass.. In the morning for breakfast I take my ensure max protein shake (0 sugar 2carb 30mg protein) french vanilla and pour half of it in 5 cups of coffee as milk replacement taste great. I make 10 cups drink 5 and then drink the other 5 and pour the other half in that. Dont tell the dr how much coffee im drinking but im not eating much... No stall yet been loosing steadily half lb or so a day sometimes .75 first few days it was a lb a day but that quit after the first 4 days.

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op

I am currently off of work so I will be home all day. I'm definetely going to need a lot of distractions! Did the liquid diet make you weak or not want to do anything physically? We have a mini beach getaway planned and I love to go in the water and waves I wonder if that's too much for the supervised starvation ill be on 🤣🤣 the premiere protein cake batter shake definetely takes care of my sweet tooth! I want to be under 300 for my surgery and I have 10 pounds to go I hope I can do it!

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op

What helped me pre-op was I started detoxing and dieting a whole month before my surgery. I started with a semi-liquid diet on May 11th. Protein Shake for breakfast and lunch and a healthy, no carb dinner. I stopped drinking alcohol and upped my water to 6 or 7 bottles a day. Then 10 days (because they had a cancellation and asked if I wanted it sooner than scheduled) before surgery, I started on all liquids. In the first 24 days before surgery, I lost 23 lbs. That really, really motivated me and made me feel so good both physically and emotionally. It also helped the surgeon with a successful surgery because of the liver shrinkage. Y'all have some awesome ideas!

    Stalls and plateaus

Well, I'm 14 months out from my sleeve and 2 weeks out from my sleeve to bypass revision (had horrendous gerd, esophagitis, gastritis, and a ton of pre-cancerous polyps). With my sleeve (and also what I will be doing with my bypass) I was at 90g protein per day, 30 carbs or less per day, 900-1000 calories per day when not working out and 1200-1300 calories per day when working out (I was going beast mode, tho), and 50g or less of fat per day. I did different work outs each day. 2 days I would do cardio, 2 days core and strength training, 2 days weight training, and 1 rest day. I would alternate what exercises I did when so my body never got used to what I was doing. If I noticed I was in a stall for 3 weeks or more, I would change up the intensity and actual exercises I did to confuse my body and break the stall. My fluid intake was always 64-76oz per day (zero sugar gatorade and/or flavored propel along with water on work out days, flavored water on non work out days). I lost 116 pounds in 10 months before everything went stupid and I had my complications and ended up needed my revision.

    May 2023 surgeries

Rocky, hopefully the past 10 days since you posted this your weight has started its gradual decent back down. It is a long process, so don't fret over daily/weekly movements (I know that is way easier said than done). Water weight can really move the scale from day to day. You might be dehydrated one day, then over the next week your body starts to retain some of the water that is has dropped over the past month. It is pretty normal I would say. During my 5 week stall, I went up 4 pounds, but have since dropped that and more. When you look back on this 12-18 months from now, this will just be a blip.
  24. so @GreenTealael's dessert pic got me jonseing for some baked goods, so when i walked by a specialty grocery store, i went in, high-tailed to the bakery and picked up these two beauties: a chocolate peanut butter butter tart and a lemon square! came home and cut out a quarter of each one to try. Verdict: the butter tart was like a 7/10. the filling was awesome, but the pastry was just a little too flaky for my taste. the lemon square was a bit of a fail. not nearly as lemon-y as it should've been. i rate it a 4/10. i only took one bite, but i should've taken a nibble instead, i feel like i just ate a bunch of unenjoyable and unworthy calories! 202 calories for the servings. just left a bit of the lemon square.
  25. I was sleeved in Mexico in 2009, and two years later I lost my gall bladder because all I did was focus on protein and nothing else. I wish I had known that we CAN overdo protein. I wish I'd known that too much protein will kill your gall bladder, your kidneys, and your liver. I wish I'd exercised from the get-go instead of waiting 3 years to finally start getting on that elliptical. It would have given me more muscle tone and less hanging skin. I wish I'd stuck to my exercise instead of letting myself get overwhelmed with all the tragedies I experienced from 2014-2020. I wish I'd gotten therapy instead of looking to Xanax, Ambien, and alcohol to distract me. I'm 23 days out of a revision from a sleeve to a bypass due to weight gain. This journey is going to be much harder than my sleeve. Treasure your sleeve, work with it, respect it. *Edit: You're goal right now should be to hydrate and keep walking. Even just the shuffling around the house is good. It helps prevent blood clots and helps flush out the anesthesia and water retention from the IV fluids. Shuffle around the house 3 or 4 times a day. Count 500 or 600 steps each time. It gets easier. Don't be bending over to grab stuff from the floor. Ask someone to help or get a $10 extended arm grabber thingy. That helped me a lot when I would drop my sock or my vitamin on the floor. 😊
