Eating Hurts - Any Tips?
SpartanMaker replied to TheLosingGame's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My guess is you're progressing a bit too fast and/or eating too much. You might try something simpler like a TBS of yogurt and see how you do, Scrambled eggs are notoriously difficult for people at first and the Ricotta Bake might also be a bit much for only 9 days post surgery. For comparison, some plans have you on full liquids for 2 weeks post surgery. -
Just starting my journey!
ShoppGirl replied to Manda1031's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Start a list of questions and take them with you because the appointments seem to go so fast. My first question would be whether you have to do the 3 or 6 months of medically managed weight loss attempt (to prove to insurance you can’t do it on your own). If you do ask if you do it with them. If so, you will have lots of visits to get your questions answered by the team so that takes off a bit of the pressure to think of everything this one time. Although you may still only meet with the surgeon once so try to be prepared for that visit if you have questions for them. Have you decided on which surgery you would like to have? They will most likely have a recommendation for you. Especially if you have a medical reason to choose one over the other but some people get a choice. -
BPD-DS 2007 Osteoporosis need easily absorbed Calcium supplement
christawho posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
BPD-DS done in 2007 15 years post op. I have severe Osteoporosis due to malabsorption, mostly self inflicted by not being diligent with my vitamins and supplements. Stopped losing weight, eating a good healthy diet, assumed I was getting what I needed did not take supplements on a regular basis. Fast forward to today, I've been faithfully taking vitamins, calcium, iron for about 2 years now but I can't seem to slow the cycle of osteoporosis. I'm taking tymlos injections nightly, but my bone scans steadily decline. Any suggestions for Oral or patch Calcium that is extremely quickly absorbable please share info. -
So, the $64,000 question that I'm sure all newbies want to know: how fast (on average) do most people lose weight after surgery. I know, I know, everyone's different, but surely there is a range. I lost very quickly before and immediately after surgery, but now that I'm about 6 or 7 weeks out, it has slowed dramatically (less than 1/2 pound per day). Is that common? Does it speed up and slow down and then back up and down (much like my investments 🤣)? I'm trying to lose another 50-60 pounds. Should I be thinking 6 months or 2 years? Thanks PS: I bet no one has ever asked this before. Sorry, couldn't find a thread on this.

What about it can't you have? I'm guessing its the tomato based sauce? Its so weird how every Dr is different. Hopefully with at least having new foods to try, this week will go fast for you and you can have even more new things to try next week. -
Yeah, speak to ur doc…if there is something you need to be worried about, he’ll let u know. I’m 4 years out, i dont eat much at one sitting (compared to “normal” people) or i’ll feel icky and or sick or barf. I also dont eat very fast, not eat alot of sugar at once nor on an empty stomach…cuz yeah, i’ll feel icky or sick or barf..in the case of too much sugar, add in racing heart, lethargy, headaches, the runs… If you are down with tracking, try finding a pattern to the sick feelings and what/how fast/when you are eating. You may find the culprit or at least learn what YOUR limits are. Good Luck! ❤️

Does anyone else who grew up obese have sad little realizations like this? I'm 22 days post op and yesterday when I weighed in I realized I weigh less than I did at the end of 8th grade, 13 years old. Which is cause for celebration but also makes me a little sad that I was an obese child and no one really tried to do anything about it. My stepdad would just tell me I had to stop eating junk food but not really give me an option (it's not like I was doing the grocery shopping), and my mom had a RNY when I was 12 but didn't try to change my diet with hers. I weigh less than I did at that age, but I'm 30 and still in the obese range, which makes me feel really bad for child-me. I also noticed when I lay a certain way, I can feel bones I've never felt before, which is also kinda sad. I've never seen my hip bones because I went from cute cubby baby body to fat kid body really fast. Idk that's just kind of crazy and sad to me. I have my weekly therapy session today and we're going to tackle these feelings, but I just thought I'd post here amongst people who might have felt some of the same things.

This is very independent to each surgery center and insurance company. My insurance required a 4 month process, but my surgery center required a 6 month minimum with the "potential for fast tracking". They said that they require the 6 months to show your dedication and make sure you really understand the process and the life long changes. I was fast tracked, about 5 months total. Once I finished all of the insurance requirements and did my final weight check for the surgery center I had my last apt with the surgeon and surgery was scheduled. It took about a week for insurance approval and I had surgery about 3 weeks after my last apt with the surgeon.

Severe slime choking me constantly and acid in lungs at night
Kate207 replied to Kate207's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for this. This really makes sense! My consultant explained a few days ago that it was the lower part of my stomach that was removed although thats all he said. They never really go into much detail. I'll ask about the pyloric valve as I think you're right on this. Regarding the twisting this also fits. I never suffered from this slime or reflux until approx 3 weeks after surgery. I stupidly chugged back approx 750ml of a litre bottle of milkshake quite fast and instantly felt sick. I had extreme pain in my stomach so I went and lay down. As I did I had this strange muscle spasm in my stomach followed by a weird flopping sensation inside. Exactly as if my stomach had moved position. Thats the only way I can describe it. I was going to go to A and E but held off. The pain eased. The sickness went away. Then that night. Slime. And slime ever since :/ -
Hair is starting to thin a bit
Candigrl1 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My hair shedding started around month 3 and is finally decreasing a bit. I had already had massive shedding before surgery so maybe that's why it slowed down so fast. I see lots of scalp now but I'm going to wait until it stops then see the hairdresser about what type of cut I want. Hang in there it will start to decrease and eventually stop. As for the stalls I usually get one every month and of course this month was no exception. I reexamined my diet and found I was drinking way too much Crystal Light (approx 50-60 oz) and have switched back to plain water and have started losing again though a bit slower. Stay safe out there in Florida! -
Family Dynamics - How do you deal with meals???
Spinoza replied to HealthierBefore45's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This might be the most important sentence in your post OP. Do you eat fast food because you don't like to cook from scratch? Or is it lack of time and, if so, could you change that in the run up to surgery? Cooking from scratch takes no more (or not much more) time than ordering and picking up a fast food meal for all, and you can make/adjust all the twiddly bits on the side that make it good for every member of your family. I live with 3 fussy eaters and I work really long hours and yet we can sit down to a meal every evening that has been made from fresh things. That's not to blow my own trumpet - I'm really lazy, LOL. I just have a stock of dinners that I can do quickly and that I can add veg, carbs, protein etc. to as we need it. Now that I'm 10 months post sleeve I just eat smaller quantities and in a different order than the rest of the family. I will eat a ragu but no pasta (family eats all); fish pie without the potato topping; roast chicken/beef/pork/lamb dinner but just meat and a little veg; even bruschetta without the bread; curry no rice, LOL. Etc.!!! Oh and soup is your friend - you do it with bread for your family, none for you. Honestly it's not hard after you get used to it. I wish you the best for your journey. -
Family Dynamics - How do you deal with meals???

Hello! I’m new here in the investigation stage of doing sleeve surgery. I met with a weight loss Dr in May and started naltrexone (I was already on high dose bupropion) and a high protein/low carb diet. We discussed sleeve surgery for later this year. I lost 10lbs that month despite going on a cruise , but found out just before the cruise that we would be moving over the summer. I pretty much put my weight on hold and went into survival mode dealing with the move and kids who didn’t want to move, etc. But now we’ve moved and settled in and I’m miserable - I can’t be active at all with my kids, clothes are uncomfortable, autoimmune disorders and pain are out of control, and life in general is hard! My new PCP let me go back on naltrexone (I already take bupropion) and I’m looking for the best surgeon near Manhattan, KS (seems like there’s a great option in Topeka and I watched their video yesterday ). Best news is that our insurance here actually will actually cover surgery after the first of the year! I’m concerned about feeding the rest of my family after surgery though. My 10 year old has behavior issues and food or not getting foods she wants is a big trigger. She wants carbs, carb, carbs! She eats me out of house and home. We’re working portion control and body positivity with her. My 8 year old has sensory and feeding issues, barely eating, very underweight, and we’re trying to get his caloric intake UP! And my husband…well… We do convenience foods/fast food often. I have so many questions about how this will all look if I have surgery! Are you making 2 completely different meals for yourself and your family? (I already often make something different for the one who doesn’t eat anything!) How do you manage family food needs while meeting your own as well? I’m afraid of turning to even more convenience foods for family. This seems selfish though. It feels like such a hard balance as a family after surgery! Can anyone relate and tell me how you’ve managed? Sorry so long - thanks for reading! -

If you lost 26 pounds since 8/31 that is great. We are all going to lose weight very differently because of our height and starting sizes. Also, I didn't have a pre-op diet. They had me doing South Beach. I have lost 18 lbs. since surgery but I think I am losing too fast because I am very lethargic. Also, I noticed it is starting to slow down. I am just grateful for every pound lost and will keep plugging away. -
I also am not losing as fast as I would like. Focus on your habits and the results will happen. My cousin who had this surgery several years ago said that it was frustrating for her for a long time and then one day she realized that she had lost 100 pounds. Trust the process and congrats on the weight lost so far!

Optifast - Green spores??
Nepenthe44 replied to heatherdbby's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein shakes in general are basically bacterial growth media with flavoring, so that's not unusual. (Once the growth really gets going, there's nothing I've found that gets the smell out. Buy extra bottles if you're forgetful and don't clean them out quickly every time.) 2 hours is a little fast though. And I don't remember anything liking Optifast. -

Had my two week check in with the surgeon! It was over the phone so very basic, he just asked how my incisions were healing, what my weight was, if I was taking my vitamins, and how fast I could consume 4oz of liquid. He said everything sounded like I was on track. I asked him if I could try thicker soups like split pea or butternut squash, he said yes but they had to be a runny cream consistency and I have to wait for eggs, cottage cheese, ricotta till the puree phase, which I was kind of hoping he'd let me start a week early, but that made me feel like the answer would be "no" lol. It's probably for the best though, because I went straight to the store and bought some creamy split pea soup and wow after maybe three small bites I was like "yeah, this feels different" and it took me an hour to get through 4oz. I'm both surprised and not surprised; on one hand it is an actual food as opposed to liquid, but on the other hand, Greek yogurt and pudding is allowed on my liquid diet and they are heavy but take me about 30mins to get through 4oz. Funny how my body knows the difference between a vegetable and a liquid, even at a similar consistency. My dietitian didn't have me follow the 30min before 30min after rule with yogurts, but I'm definitely doing it with the peas soup. My next check in with the surgeon is in 4 weeks, hopefully it'll be a good one too. -
Bariatric friendly alcoholic drinks?
fourmonthspreop replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Agree. Vodka or Tequila soda. Go slow. It hits you fast. Avoid drinking liquor by itself. I've made cocktails with less mixers and more soda water so I can still have a cocktail but less Alcohol and sugar. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
August 24!
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to blackcatsandbaddecisions's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I will try to look through my pics and see what I have…unfortunately to get the abdomen in a picture is a bit less clothed than I like to be in pictures, haha. My three week checkup went great, she said I’m healing incredibly fast. The drain hole is almost closed up (thank goodness). Still dealing with numbness on bottom part of left arm, but other than that I feel great. She released me to peloton workouts and walking longer distances and that has helped my mood considerably. My arm scars are still puffy and puckered in places due to the internal sutures/swelling so they look kind of scary at this point. My abdomen swelling is definitely still there but much less uncomfortable than it was even a week ago. I got on the scale and I was actually down a few pounds, surprisingly. I saw a number that started with 15 for the first time in my adult life. I am thinking I may still end up in the 160s because that seems to be my hold point, but it was a nice thing to see even if it was temporary. -
So, I will be starting my pre-op diet in a little less than a month, but I wanted to test a few of the things in the plan to make sure my body reacts well to it. Usually what I do when I'm testing things, I've done this all my life to see if I'm intolerant to certain foods, is to water fast (fasting all food items other than pure water, no sweeteners or liquid calories) before I start just to wash my body clean. I decided to get on the scale to just see how things looked. I know logically I can gain fat if I don't eat those calories, but how did I gain 2lbs on a water fast? I'm so scared. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I haven't even started the pre-op diet yet. Can I get some guidance? Sent from my M2007J3SY using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm a bit lost : PCOS, losing slowly...
kcuster83 replied to seyma's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello. Really everyone is different. Without knowing all of your details it is hard to say. You could talk it over with your Dietician or Nutritionist? They could go over your diet with you, and see if they find something that could be slowing things down. Be open and honest, it will only help you. I eat carbs (minimal because of how much I can eat), my team and Nutritionist are very "balanced diet" friendly. But again, everyone is different. Some people's body hate carbs and other are fine with eating them. Like you mentioned, if you have less to loose than you will loose slower. As well as when people starting out bigger get closer to a "normal" weight they slow down substantially. I have a friend who has been trying to loose her last 20 lbs for months now. Just have to keep pushing. Good luck, loss is still loss no matter how fast or slow you think it is going! -
Have you spoken to your surgeon? By now you should be able to eat a lot more than a couple of spoonfuls & a wide variety of foods & not feeling nauseous or throwing up (unless you eat something too dry, too coarse or eat too much or too fast of course). Personally I never had another shake after the liquid stage though I did find a good high protein yoghurt to boost my protein each day. I wasn’t hungry or interested in eating either for more than a year (wish I was still like that now though 😁). I used to eat to a schedule to ensure I got my protein & nutrients in every day (still do actually most days). Should stress that I didn’t worry too much if I didn’t eat all my portion if I didn’t want it. Even now, on days I’m not overly hungry, I’ll eat a lighter meal like a tub of yoghurt for lunch & not a heavier meat based dish. Are you doing any activity to compensate for muscle loss? I’m not an exercise/gym person but do use resistance bands & do stretches every day. The bands are great for toning muscles without adding bulk.

Revision weight-loss RNY
Tufflaw replied to Chelll's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I got the sleeve in Dec 2016 and lost a lot of weight very quickly, about 120 lbs in maybe 6 or 7 months. Then I had some personal and professional setbacks and ended up screwing up the program and over the next few years put almost everything back on. Then last November I had revision to bypass and again the weight loss was pretty quick - not as fast as before but still very acceptable. I am now lower than the lowest weight I was with the sleeve, and have kept it off longer as well. And I continue to lose, so we'll see where the endpoint is. -
Can anyone tell me how your experience was in weight loss went after RNY revision. Like how fast did you lose and how much. I know everyone varies but just wondering if it is somewhat quick or slow? Thanks Sent from my SM-S906U using BariatricPal mobile app

The other I forget to mention is I use diet ocean spray, and I mix it with vital protein powder. This helps with hunger and feeling full. I will also use fiber mix from Bariatric Advantage, haven’t tried any other brand. The fiber I mix with water and drink it fast cause it doesn’t dissolve. I also make to take gasx and I take a dose of miralax everyday to avoid gas and constipation.
