  1. This is a good story because I find myself asking why did I get banded. I've only lost a little weight I have my third fill Friday I was banded May 10th this is a very slow process. I'm on and off the wagon every other day this is harder then I thought.
  2. My surgery was on a Monday Morning...6am I was prepped..... My Final weigh in with my Surgeon was the Friday before...if I did not loose the required weight he would postpone the surgery.... So, that Friday night I went out with my family for my "last Meal"...I too chose a place that I knew I would never step foot in again....and yes, it was a "All you can eat" Chinese buffet...complete with a raw bar, stir fry and carving stations...the works.... Saturday and Sunday it was back to shakes and small snacks.

    Great Deal!

I don't always have a blender with me to make Protein shakes, so I bought a few blender cups with the wire ball in them to mix better, and dare I say it, they work almost as well as my blender and the clean-up is a breeze since they are dishwasher safe... Well I was on my daily site called slickdeals and I noticed they have the exact same one's I bought for a pretty decent deal. I think they are a must have for all weight-loss surgery patients, and I swear by them so I thought I'd share the link with you. I hope it's not against the rules to share links, and if so, then I'm sorry, but here it is. And there's a code to get $5 off as well. iHerb.com has 28 oz. Blender Bottle with Blender Ball for $8.99 - $5 with code ULO176 = $3.99. Shipping is $2. Note: You may need to create a new acct to use the code. http://www.iherb.com/Search?kw=blender%20bottle
  4. Last Meal was from my favorite chinese food place. My fridge is full of low glycemic index vegetables. My pantry is full of the liver shakes. I guess I'm really doing this. I love reading the post op comments, about how much weight people have lost, and how well they are doing. It's so inspirational. I'm not used to relying on anyone to help with anything ever, but I think that with this, I'm going to have to really ask for help and support and be a total sponge for positivity. I have so much sympathy for my friends and family right now! They have no idea... Come to my party...maybe we can all suffer our way to success together?? ~M
  5. It's not always how much you are doing in terms of time...I think in order to keep the motivation going, you have to have an idea as to why you are doing it. The reality is with rapid weight loss you are going to have saggy skin. It may or may not shrink eventually, but firming the muscles will help give contour and tone. Cardio will improve skin health giving you your best chance to avoid plastic surgery. So you are doing the right thing balancing weights and cardio. I just walked first two weeks, put in elliptical on week three and light weights by week four. Increased intensity by no more than 10% a week until 2 months post surgery and then started doing heavier weights and month 3 began the Couch to 5K program so I could put running in the mix. Now I'm going to a very heavy HITT weight program, but taking more days off to recover and will mix walk and run days with that. Keep challenging yourself, and have some fun. Did you know if you climb a 11,000 foot mountain with a 20 pound pack for 8 hours you will burn 6,000 calories? Lost three pounds doing that.
  6. My surgeon released me for cardio at 2 weeks post-op. He just didn't want me lifting weights. I am 3.5 weeks post and haven't exercised at all yet. I plan to do 30 mins a day and work up to an hour.
  7. lost 64 lbs - still have major self esteem issues. had that problem my entire life Bella66 Ahhhhhh you look like the bell of the ball in your lovely pic Losing weight helps "us" with our health issues we always will look better while we are losing weight but. personal situations like self-esteem, confidence - these are things/problems you/others mght have to work on weight loss can't automatically "fix" all/some of our problems that we've had all our lives just like us having all that "excess" weight all our lives, it doesn't come off overnight - takes lots of work confidence issues you've/we've/some have always dealt with that have been around all our lives also won't improve immediately without some work speaking for myself - I never knew what a lack of self-esteem, confidence i had............ until time passed, feeling and looking so much better i was dong stuff i would never have ventured to do before WLS you've lost weight fantastically i hope you "gain" some confidence et al you look terrific be proud with your pretty head held high good luck happy holidays kathy congrats

  9. I'm not sorry I had the sleeve but I wish I were loosing the weight as fast as I was lead to believe I would. My family was also very concerned about me having the surgery but they supported my decision. Best of luck to you

    Things I look forward to

Sounds like you have a lot of great plans, and I'm sure you'll get to do all those things soon enough. One of my big goals pre-band was to be able to go to a "normal" store for clothes rather than the horribly expensive specialty stores for large women. I was so pleased when I went to K-Mart recently and discovered I can fit in their clothes now. Sadly, I think that I am LESS able to wear sleeveless shirts now than pre-band, because my arms are sagging and flabby from the weight loss. But I look at the "bat wings" as a good thing, because I'd rather have saggy skin than stay as large as I was before.

    Which is better

After reading up on the three most common procedures, I decided on the sleeve. I think the lap band has the highest failure rate; not because of the procedure itself, but because it's the easiest to misuse and cheat. I've seen/heard/read of many people converting from band to sleeve. The bypass seemed too extreme for the 110 lbs I wanted to lose and I worried about the malabsorptive aspects of the procedure. It seems that more daily supplements might be required to replace nutirients that aren't absorbed. Also, I got the impression that the skin used to create the new pouch is very elastic. I worried about it stretching and allowing me to cheat it as well. So the sleeve seemed to hit the Goldilocks spot right in the middle. It's permanent. It allows for more nutrient absorption than the bypass. The remaining portion of the stomach is less stretchy. And this is a biggie.... The area of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone ghrellin is in the section that is removed during surgery. The Wikipedia article on ghrellin states that the sleeve procedure reduces ghrellin levels 60% long-term. So that sealed it for me. You will have to decide which procedure is right for you based on your research and conversations with your doctor. As others have stated, the answer will involve the amount of weight you need to lose, your co-morbidities, and your ability to stick with different levels of follow-up care. Good luck with your decision!
  12. Hi ALL, I had the gastric band surgery in with Dr Chris De Bruyne, Belgium three years ago(when I was 62yrs old!!) and was very pleased....except that my face(my cheeks really) became more and more wrinkled as the weight fell off. Every time I looked in the mirror these wrinkles bothered me and I started researching Mini Facelifts as a possible solution. I could find NO forum similar to this with any information relevant to us in Ireland. Anyway, I went ahead with great trepidation and had a Mini Facelift in Belgium a week ago and (fingers n toes crossed) I'm pretty delighted with the results...even this early. So I decided to put this little bit of information on this site in the hope that it might be helpful to someone else in the same 'boat' as I found myself in. I had a consultation with Frederik Serneels when I was having a slight unfill and from there made contact with Dr Patrick De Donker etc, etc. I was VERY worried because I couldn't get in contact with any satisfied/unsatisfied patients but went ahead anyway....think he's done a lovely job for me ,anyway. 13. Where do I start? The begining I guess, my wife started out with a band. It worked for 6 to 8 months. Then the slip, then it was fixed, then it slipped again, then it was removed. She lost 80 pounds with the band and was feeling great. Since the band removal she started gaining back the weight, in three months 30 lbs. The band was no longer an option, the last slip was bad and she waited a long time to go back to the doctor to have it removed. She was scare and did not want to gain the weight back (it broke my heart to see her cry herself to sleep). She had the Gastric Sleeve procedure on 1/10/11. The surgery went fine, her recovery was slow, she was worried about leakage, doctor said everything is fine after the swallow test. She was in the hospital for four days, I do believe she felt safe in the hospital, now she is home. She did the clear liquids for the first week. She is doing the full liquids and is having a problem. She is having jello, pudding and protien drinks, she is trying her hardest but its not working. Trouble finding what works for her. If nobody reads this it is okay, it help to just jot it down. If anyone would like to comment It would be great. I have a few questions: Two weeks out, what are some foods that work at this time? Has anyone dealt with pain after eating? Is 4 to 8 ounces each meal enough or not enough? I am confused and worried?

    Struggling!

Hang in there, Carly! Distracting myself by non-food related activities helped me. Maybe look at a magazine, catalog or website of clothing with models in it at your goal weight? I went to Macy's and looked at all of the way-too-small suits and said, "I'll be back" in my best Terminator voice. 7 pounds to goal, warming up the car now, getting ready to blast through the police station wall!

    From the album: My journey

I think I was at around 333 Lbs in this picture. My starting weight was 350 Lbs.

    Is this normal?

I have been banded 2 weeks today. Am I being impatient because I haven't lost any weight in the last week even though I'm sticking to plan, still feeling some restriction, and walking every night? I suppose the week prior to surgery and the week after spoiled me considering that I lost 15lbs during this time. Now, nothing.. i may have even put back on a pound or two. I'm sad..:cry My first fill isn't until the day before Thanksgiving.. 11/21.

    Skinny Minny! Me? Seriously?!

@@jenkbacon I am 6 weeks out and returned to work after 4 weeks. I got some of the same reactions. "wow you look great!" or "you dont look sickly at all!" (from friends at work) or "have you lost weight??" and my all time favorite "how do you feel?" Its like they expect me to look and feel like I am on my death bed or something. I feel great no doubt but are they wishing I had complications??? I had one co-worker tell me that I am wearing my clothes big on purpose. Really??? I am not running out to buy new clothes just one month after surgery. I am wearing my regular work clothes for now. And absolutely I get the questions 'what are you doing?" "what are you eating?" I dont know if it's because I work in the medical field and diet seems to always be the topic around there or what. Maybe its different in a regular work environment. For now I enjoy the compliments, but hoping that soon the spotlight fades.

    Skinny Minny! Me? Seriously?!

Congrats on your success this far! My situation is a little different because there was only 1 close friend at work who knew I had surgery (others have figured it out since then I think) and there was this one woman who just would not leave me alone. She was obsessed with my weight loss. "What are you doing?" "What are you eating" "When will you stop" etc etc etc. She made a comment to me at least once daily. It made me really uncomfortable, but now 18 months out, no one really mentions it anymore. They've adjusted to the "New me" and your co-workers will too. But expect lots of compliments in that first year of active weight loss! Even today someone came back to work who I had resigned a couple weeks ago for visit and we hugged and she said "Oh, you're as thin as a rail!!" That's definitely not something I'm used to hearing! Also weird is new people who have started or I've met at my work, church, kids' school since I lost 140+ pounds. It's so weird to me that they never knew me as overweight. Sometimes it will come up and I will show them a before and after picture and they are floored. It's kind of cool the first time someone says "I never would have known you were overweight". Good luck to you on the rest of your journey!
  19. I had my VSG on 1/20/2015. I told a few close friends I work with and of course my family prior. When I started my preop diet, people were quite nosey, so I was honest about my plans for surgery and really have had positive feedback. I returned to work after 4 weeks down 15.5 pounds (I lost 11 pounds in the 6 months working with the dietitian and 10 pounds on the preop diet), so I was at a total weight loss of 36.5 lbs. I really hadn't seen much of a difference personally in my appearance, but my scrubs were definitely looser. Everybody, made comments! It was crazy. I was very upfront about surgery and the response has been overwhelmingly supportive. The only somewhat negative experience I had was a doctor that I love dearly come up to me in excitement about losing weight and I told her about surgery, but she took a step back from me and stopped talking to me. She is overweight herself, but I was shocked at the look of disappointment she gave me. I'm now at the 8 week mark and I'm down 43.5! So not much of a change since I went back, but yesterday everybody again was commenting. Is the weight loss that different with WLS? I haven't changed much in 4 weeks, but I had multiple people use the phrase "skinny minny" yesterday! I'm a little overwhelmed by the attention. It's a very weird situation for me because I've always preferred to be a fly on the wall and now all of a sudden I'm front and center. Have any of you had this experience? Any advice? It's definitely not a bad thing and it is positive that people are so encouraging. I'm just not used to attention like that. It's a very new experience for me! ☺️

    Weight Watchers post op?

My NUT told me that a lot of his patients that have kept the weight off long term did weight watchers about 2/3rds of the way to goal. He said he thought it was helpful because of the meetings, teaming up with friends and the weigh in's each week. The plan itself...the "meals" are still going to be too much for us. Our food choices will just be different than everyone else's because we need to eat really small meals and high Protein. I know the program too. Did it several times...very successful once, a long time ago. I just don't think I am to the point where I want to pay a weekly fee. I'm still paying for the surgery.....and will for another 2 yrs, more than likely. And I pay Planet Fitness each month too. A lot of my "me" money is already going out the door for this. But.....if I ever get to the point where I feel I'm getting off track, I will definitely revisit WW's. Also, I am at a weird point. Lots of stalls. Its discouraging. I am still well within the guidelines of the diet but I have noticed that I tend to eat a little more carbs than I did in the beginning. So....that's going to stop. I have gained 1lb since starting weight training last week (have only been doing cardio up till now) I'm hoping the weight training will help with this stall, lose, stall, lose cycle I've been in. Maybe after I put on a little muscle I can dip back into the carbs??
  21. I am stressing myself out about losing too much weight and being rejected. My insurance requires a BMI of 40 to be considered. Mine is currently 47.5. I have a 3 month diet, and if I lose more that 40 pounds my BMI is going to drop to 39. I am so worried that I will have gone through this for nothing. 3 days into my diet and I am already down 3 pounds. Not complaining, I want to lose as much as possible for surgery to reduce lose skin and build good eating/exercise diets NOW rather than post op, I am just so stressed thinking that I could possibly lose too much. Is this possible? Has this ever happened to any one? I have aetna. Side note: I do not have any obesity related diseases so the need for surgery is based solely off my BMI.
  22. You are doing swell! As for the tummyache issue, it might be lactose intolerance doing it to you. Try mixing Almond Breeze milk into the Protein powder to see if that won't help; soymilk might also work but it has more calories in it than the Almond Breeze--I get both at costco for reasonable prices, and also my protein out there is good, too. I use Muscle Milk lite in vanilla flavor to make my shakes with. Sometimes, I will add half of a banana to flavor it with--tastes very good! You could also try frozen blueberries in the shake which also is a nice tradeoff from plain vanilla. I think as you get farther along postop, you will do much better! I am 5-6, and right now weigh 186. I started this journey as a revision surgery patient from RNY to sleeve in May of this year--a first for the doctor I had. Normally, they do band to sleeve revisions. My bypass failed 5 yrs ago and I had developed hypertension that I cannot be treated for with meds due to severe allergies to all of them! Weight loss is my only intervention--I feel better than I have in years! My goal is to maintain at 145-150. My weight at the onset of sleeve surgery was 223.5 pounds--at the time of bypass surgery in 2001, I was 264. I never wanna see those 200s EVER again!!! It is great hearing from you, Dawn! Wishing continued success and keep me posted on your progress! Ronda I agree about the carbs, I try to avoid them for the most part and concentrate on the Proteins also. I saw the doctor for my check up today and I've lost 10lbs since my surgery. The doctor was happy with that and said slow loss is better for me since I have less to lose. I can't do the protein shakes. For some reason they give me a stomache ache. The doctor said to get my protein from my food instead. He also said that I can cut down the total protein from 75 grams to at least 50 grams. I am short only 4'10' and he said I don't need 75 grams of protein so I can stop stressing about getting so much protein. That was a relief for me as I have been feeling really worried about not getting enough protein. I also think that since I am not going to be eating constantly to consume so much protein I will see a better weight loss on my next visit. It is all a learning experience, but one that I am so glad to be working on.
  23. Just thought I'd share some stats for those of you that weigh everyday and get freaked out by gaining a pound or two some days. I went to urgent care yesterday because I was really dehydrated (I've got a clostridial infection causing diarrhea). They took my vitals including weight before giving me 3liters IV. Needless to say I felt instantly better and returned home. This morning I did my normal weekly weigh in and I was 11 pounds up from yesterday! So keep in mind how much hydration status and Fluid intake/output plays a role in your daily weight fluctuation.

    Water weight gain

I know you are right! I had surgery on January 27, but came home with a picc line, and have been hooked up to tpn for 14 hours a night since coming home. It is 3 liters of fluid EVERY NIGHT , and I cannot eat or drink ANYTHING by mouth yet. My scale shows just about the same every day, within about a 2-3 pound range. It is frustrating not to be losing....hopefully the pic line will come out this week, and I can get on with losing some weight.
  25. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and the weight fell off fairly rapidly. I transitioned from the Weight Loss phase into the Maintenance phase at around 7 months. Sleeve patients lose weight at a slower pace but they lose weight over a longer period of time, sometimes 2 years, and can achieve almost the same weight loss as RNY patients. Even though I lost weight rapidly, it was not a shock. Some people no longer recognized me. It is good to take a good before photograph so that you have something to compare it with after surgery. Many people do not see how obese they really are. I never appeared in photographs because I was the photographer in the family. When I looked in a mirror, it was alway straight on. The problem is that many people do not see how obese they really are and after surgery do not see how much weight they really lost. So in my case I took a before photo and a 6 month after photo. I tried to strike the same pose so it was a good one to one comparison. Here is the photo.
