Anyone get covid or other illness during sleeve recovery?
Maisey replied to holly..'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 10 mos. post RNY and am recently diagnosed with Covid. I am well past the recovery time you are specifically asking about. I have lost all taste and smell. As a result, I need to be especially mindful of drinking and eating. It’s not usually an issue for me. Right now, I’m eating mostly shakes so I can maximize my protein intake. I can eat and am not nauseated but with no taste, have no desire for anything. I’m hoping I regain my senses sooner rather than later. I believe that’s happening as I’m starting to get tiny bits of taste here and there. -

I could barely drink Water until my 10th week. Now all I want is water, I cant stand the Powerade zero and G2 and other stuff I had to drink for 10 weeks. Today I was happy to drink 8 oz of water in about 10 minutes. That was a BIG improvement for me. I can drink water with lemon a little faster. I still don't think I drink 64 oz a day but because I keep adding ice I'm not really sure how much I drink.

Thank goodness for these remarks by everyone. I had my surgery on 5/12/14 and came home 10 lbs heavier than when I went into surgery. I have since lost all of that plus some. I'm down 21 lbs. from when I started this whole thing. Yay!! I would do this again. Looking forward to losing more pounds. I just need to stop weighing every single day. I'm addicted to my scale.

Today is day 97 after Gastric Sleeve surgery and I am down 80 pounds since I went under the knife. I fee; good, but not great. Still haven't gotten back my energy. To be fair, I spent a month on antibiotics for a post-op infection. This week I plan to start an exercise regimen that hopefully help with boosting my energy. My iron is a bit low and my B-12 is off the charts high. Vitamin D also low. I began using the MD patch for my vitamins a month ago and I believe it's working well. My blood tests were done only after 10 days on the patch. That's my story and I'm happy to stick to it.

Should I Do It ?
Tiffany Talbert Corbet replied to chicha2012's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
What does your primary physician say? Have you gone to a seminar and had the opportunity to ask questions? Have you talked to others who have gone through the procedure and were successful and happy about the outcome? I'm definitely not saying that iggychic had to say isn't important, because it is. It's very important to learn all the good AND all the bad that can happen so it will help you make the best decision for YOU. Only you can make the decision. Not us, not your hubby, not your mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, or friends....only YOU. You know what's best for you and your son, You know what will work best for your weight loss. I have told only about 10 people (not including my parents, etc.). Only those I knew would support me and my decision, and they are all very excited for me (hubby, mom-in-law, sis-in-law, sis, half-sis, 1 uncle, and friends). I too have struggled all my life with my weight. I've gained, I've lost, I've gained it back....only to be frustrated over and over. Last year I started seeing my current primary. He mentioned that he wanted me to lose weight before seeing him the next year for my physical. I burst into tears and told him what a struggle it was. He said he thought I was a little depressed and prescribed welbutrin (which I LOVE) and a meeting witha psychiatrist to work out my self-esteem issues. Try as I did for a year, I would lose some, but gain it back, and only watched the days tick away until that next appointment, only to be scolded at my next appointment with him and I broke. I asked him how in the world am I supposed to be successful? I've struggled with this all my life! That's when he suggested the sleeve with the Center of Excellence and a Dr. they hospital had hired away from another hospital who was one of the first to be trained on the procedure in the U.S. In my opinion....I would talk it over with your primary. Go to the seminar, meet with the psychologist, maybe attend a support group and meet people who are in a similar situation, and really search inside for the answer that is right for you. It will take a little time, and maybe a lot of tears and guilt, but you need to do what's right for you, and what's right for the future of your relationship with your son. I send you prayers and wish you much luck with your decision. PS. My surgery is scheduled for 11/16. I'm nervous and excited all rolled into one. -
Living forever with the Lap band
elcee replied to depressed_bandster's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is nothing that says it should be replaced every 10 years or so....... I am a size 8 (Australian) which equates to a size 4 US. My port doesn't stick out but I am sure everyone is different. It depends on where the port is placed and where you lose your weight. I have skinny hips/legs but do not have a completely flat stomach. -
Has anybody heard of Raspberry Ketones? I have a friend in my workout group that is taking it and is losing weight like crazy. It's all natural. I was wondering can we take anything like that with the band...I'm 3 months banded and have only lost 10 lbs. work out no less than 4 times a week and walks everyday. I've lost inches but just wondering if I could take something to jump start.

Hi, Debbie. You and I have a lot in common! I had RNY surgery 10/2009 and for the first time have gained 11 pounds. My hubby and I started at the YMCA but I am still a stress eater. Have you increased your exercise or lowered your calorie intake? I am pulling for us both to succeed at this. Katie

Ok who is currently on a preop diet?!
Stefistan replied to Katrinakit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery May 9, day 2 of my official pre-op diet but I've been working my way into it for about 10 days. Decided against any "last meals" or "farewell chocolate chip Cookies " or glasses of port. Now waiting for my shake mix to come from Amazon but while I wait I'm living on cheese sticks, meat, and salad & keeping it under 1000 calories. When my shakes turn up I will go to 3 shakes, unlimited veggies, and a 4-5oz serving of Protein for the rest of the week. Next Monday starts 4 shakes, veggies, and broth. I'm adding Gelatin to my shakes and broth in hopes of supporting healing and not losing my hair. Since I'm bloated and hormonal I don't know how it's going but I started at 242 and know I've gotten down to 232.5 pre-bloat. Shooting for 220 for surgery. Cranky, often hungry, determined to not screw this up. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

My Sleeve Journey (sleeved 12/28)
MamaRhea replied to MamaRhea's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So I thought I would take the time to lay out exactly what foods I am eating, both for myself to look back on, and for any others on here looking for food ideas. You will notice that many of these do in fact have some dairy in them. I have replaced dairy as much as possible, but eliminating it entirely would make a huge impact on what is available to me, and I can't fight two battles at once. Cheeses don't give me nearly so much trouble as regular milk itself does, so I have switched to Lactaid, which I have found to be extremely pleasant. I think I actually like it better than I liked milk (which is really saying something). I have been limiting myself to portions of no greater than a 1/2 cup at a time. I eat anywhere from 4-6 of these mini meals per day, and have been losing just a little more than a pound per day on average (current weight 313 even!). I do drink about 8oz of Lactaid (slowly) once or twice a day for Protein, along with as much Water as I can get down in a day. I do separate my drinking from my meals, and wont take any sips until at least 30 minutes has passed from my last bite. I find that I am never really hungry, and the foods I am eating are delicious so I never feel deprived. Here is the list of foods. Each item on this list makes enough for several mini meals. I don't blend any of these unless specified. I just chew very very thoroughly. 1: 2 Tablespoons of pesto mixed into 1 can (drained) of white Beans, topped with a table spoon of parmesan and mixed. 2: 1 banana mashed with a few tablespoons of Peanut Butter with a little Lactaid. (this makes a lovely frozen treat) 3: Canned Campbells split pea Soup with ham and bacon. Lots of protein and totally delicious. 4: Various other canned Soups involvings peas or beans with tiny bits of soft meat 5: 1 egg blended up with 1 chicken sage sausage and 1 tablespoon of herbed goat cheese with a splash of Lactaid. Cooked up in a pan just like scrambled eggs (DELICIOUS). This one makes almost exactly a 1/2 cup of food, depending on the size of the egg. 6: Refried beans with melted mozzarella. 7: Ricotta Bake (OMG the whole family loves this one). Going to add some ground turkey the next time I make it. 8: Cheesy Cauliflower Casserole. Both this and the Ricotta Bake are from www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com If you haven't already checked it out it would be well worth your while. 9: Canned chicken or tuna, mixed up with whatever I fancy at the moment. Various herbs from my garden, (chives, sage, oregano, etc), tarter sauce, a tasty spicy sandwich spread, fresh parmesan, etc etc. The sky is the limit for this one. 10: Prosciutto (very high quality, no fillers or nasty stuff), blended up with herbed goat cheese. Those are what I have experimented with so far! Please feel free to comment any tips, pointers, or recipes of your own -
I had surgery Sept. 10, 2014, and at my 3 month weigh in I am down 50 pounds. It was a vary welcome surprise, as I don't own a scale. I was still feeling so tired and when I spoke with my doctors about it, they suggested to have blood work done again. Found out that I was low on Iron. After adding a iron supplement, I'm feeling better, less tired. I do feel that taking your Vitamins, B's, and other supplements is very important, you can really feel tired and sluggish if you miss one day of them.

Why all the different vitamins? Why not just take bariatric multivitamins?
NurseGrace replied to caramelbaby10181's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
The reason why bariatric Vitamins are not popular here is frankly, because we do not need them. Be cautious of whatever your NUT is trying to sell you, IF she is selling to you, I wasn't clear on that. All we need are basic multivites, Calcium, and some are told to take B12. I get mine from costco - 250 vitamins for about 10 or 12 dollars. That is the most economical way to buy them. We do not malabsorb so unless you are already deficient in something there is just no reason to spend that kind of money. -

I've had the info seminar and I'm meeting with the surgeon next Wednesday. Not sure what procedure I'll have, but leaning toward the sleeve. I have a friend who got the lap band 10 years ago and she has put it all back on. Another friend got the sleeve 2 years ago and is really struggling. She's gained back 35 and in crisis. My main worry is not the surgery, but regaining weight down the road, like happened with all my other big weight losses. Any advice from the long-term folks? This is the one aspect that terrifies me. Thanks!

Why Did You Choose The Sleeve?
legal loser replied to pebbles99's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My mom was banded in 2009 and my best friends mom in 2011. I went to the seminars thinking band and learned about the sleeve. Researched the heck out of it and decided it was for me. Like not having to do the fills (I will still have yearly follow ups at the bariatric center for life) and not having a foreign body in me. At 30, bypass was not an option because I found it too invasive and I didn't want my insides rearranged. My surgeon did all 3 procedures but was initially trained with bypass. At my pre-op I was 90% set on sleeve with a 10% reservation for band. Never once did he push bypass on me and we walked through the pros and cons of the band vs. sleeve and I made the decision to "own" the sleeve procedure. I think whichever procedure you select you have to "own" it to be successful. Good luck with whatever you select. -
I was going to say the same as @@James Marusek. Bypass will really help you with maintenance. You will just need to be sure to work continually with a NUT and may have to increase your calories faster than some. For what it's worth, I have never lost 30 pounds a month or any of the other crazy numbers people quote. I lost fairly steadily at 12-15 pounds the first few months and then 10ish pounds per month. I am 10 1/2 months post-op and down 110 pounds since surgery. You will just get to goal and move on to maintenance quicker than most of us are able to.

Why Did You Choose The Sleeve?
MinaT replied to pebbles99's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Pebbles it may seem like the sleeve is new, but it's actually not. There's a category of overweight called the Extreme Morbidly Obese. For those the option that was chosen over gastric bypass was a surgery called the Duodenal Switch. Patients would go through all the hoops and have the sleeve surgery. They would lose a certain amount of weight and then about 10 months to a year later they would go back in for a second surgery, the duodenal switch. Doctors started to note that goal weight was being achieved with just the Gastric Sleeve and the second part of the surgery was canceled. Since the sleeve was considered part of a two-part (two surgeries) it does not have it's own Medicare Code. Many insurance companies sort of follow what the Government considers the norm. Also, since it was not considered a stand-alone surgery it took a little while to get the data back on where the sleeve stands in comparison to Lap Band and Gastric Bypass. There have been so many issues in the past with lap band, and now so many revisions, or people having to get it taken out and problems with adhesions many surgeons are backing away from doing lap band lately because of it. The sleeve has been around for a while now, but the statistics are showing that in the long run it is comparable with Gastric Bypass with less complications from dumping, malnutrition, etc. Of course, it's a surgery so it's not full-proof, some people have issues with it. I only wanted the sleeve, I had no interest in Gastric Bypass, however, with Gastric Bypass there is less issue with GERD or acid reflux, that has given me some pause because I suffer from acid reflux, but then I realized, wow that's because i was eating late at night and eating too much. Since I started the 6 month pre-supervised diet I haven't had any issues with acid reflux in months and I haven't been sleeved yet. Good luck on your decision making and what you are doing is awesome, research research research and start working on adjusting the way you eat now, eat your meats first, vegetables second, lower your carbs, and try practice not drinking with your dinner, try to lower your caffeine in advance because you will have to give up caffeine. Try to monitor what you are eating in advance by joining something like myfitnesspal.com and keep track of your Water, Protein & carb intakes. -
Sounds like your questions are getting answered. good luck to you. my date is Sept. 10. saggy skin? heard some people recover well. depends on age and genetics. working out also helps to replace the area with muscle. I figure I'd rather have loose skin than be morbidly obese. hope you find some Protein that you like.

Stop eating and drinking night before surgery
april042019 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I just had a question about eating and drinking before the surgery. My surgery is tomorrow morning 04/04 and my doctor said not to eat or drink anything after 10 pm. It's almost 10 right now and I ate about 4 hours ago and just drank a bottle of water but I feel like my stomach is full. I'm worried there'll still be some food or water in my stomach and intestines when they do the surgery. Is that possible? It just seems unreal that it could really completely empty out by 5 am...
