    How much have you lost?

I am only 10 days out today and lost 15 pounds. Excited about that.

    Am I rushing into plastics?

I’m scheduled for a tummy tuck, BL/BA, and arm lift January 14. I’ll be 17 months post surgery. I’m working on losing my last 10 pounds, although my surgeons (both WLS and PS) said they’re comfortable with me having surgery at my current weight. I may be rushing, but it’s what I want and need to complete the final piece of my weight loss journey. I feel like that final big investment of money, pain, and time is going to be integral to my long term success. (There are several studies that show this to be the case).
  3. Awwww, that is SO hard. We never want our failures to become our children's inherited failures. My oldest daughter will be 10 in about 6 weeks and she is already on the overweight side. At my psych eval I brought this up and that of course I don't want my daughter to have to go down this same path, etc. She basically said "each person needs to find their own path, you can guide her, offer her healthy choices, teach her about eating healthy, encourage her to exercise, but at some point this will be HER battle and not yours." It was a wow moment. Of course I will everything that a parent can do to ensure a healthy strong child, but she gets to be an active particpant in her own life. I thought that was very well said. I'm glad you talked to her. It is funny how other people react or don't react to OUR weight loss. It is always fascinating. I love that you told her this is NOT a competition. You are there for her and always will be and that is the best thing a parent can do!
  4. Hello all, I am going to be sleeved on Tuesday (19th September 2017) and I found myself on this website this evening creating a profile... I suppose I am on here for some support and guidance, but also because I thought it might help center my own thoughts about my journey to 'have to' type it out. Mini therapy, I guess. I also couldn't find - maybe I was being lazy - too many people sharing their journey with my sort of stats, so many I will be helpful to some younger, female patients on the 'light' side of the scale in terms of what to expect etc. We are all in this together! VITAL STATS Age: 26 Height: 159cm or 5'1" Weight: About 86.5kg, or 190lbs - I will verify this and put it on my signature when I am weighed pre-op. Female Location: Australia, home for the operation but I live in London, UK. Surgery + Date: Gastric Sleeve 19/09/17 JOURNEY TO NOW I suppose I always had a bit of a problem with my weight. I have certainly gone through periods in my young adult life where I was slim. The trouble for me, I suppose, is that I have an identical twin sister who has always been slimmer than I have (maybe 5-7kgs) and, as such, I have always subconsciously felt like the 'bigger' twin. My twin is tiny - she is now about 20kgs lighter than me and it really gets me down. She lives in Australia still and I am in London, but imagine living with a 20kg lighter version of yourself! Someone who is exactly like you but 25% less weight. It can be hard, although she is really supportive. I am a really emotionally stable and rational person, but I have self-control issues and I emotionally eat. In the last 2.5 years, I have gone through 2 serious break-ups. The first was with my boyfriend of on-again/off-again 9 years...and the second was with a man I loved possibly more. I turned straight to food and alcohol (which I seldom drank prior) to forget the pain I was feeling and to be able to get on with work. Over this 2-2.5 year period, I have gained about 25kgs. I remember being 62kgs at Christmas 2013, and when I was weighed a month or so ago at the surgeon's office I was 86.6kg. To say I was devastated was an understatement. Although I admit I have self-control issues, I certainly have it within me. I guess I would classify as an 'all or nothing' person; I can easily eat and eat and eat, but when I reallllllly get on a roll with a diet, I am the type to be able to starve myself. This has lead in the past (over 10 years) to yo-yo dieting and I have tried it all; starvation, protein shakes, exercising, duromine/metermine pills...really anything. Sometimes it has worked, sometimes it hasn't. My mother has been overweight my whole life and although she doesn't have diabetes, her mother did. I live in a family of eaters and providers, and I see patterns in my own behaviour that mirror my mother. My mother was a very attractive woman in her youth - she is still attractive now actually - but I do not wish to see the same health and aesthetic issues she has repeated in my own life. I find myself not wanting to go out and socialise because I have nothing to wear; my clothes don't fit and I always tell myself I should lose weight before I buy more...I say no to outings, I hide away and eat. I am embarrassed about my weight - I hear myself telling people that I 'put on weight recently' and over-compensate for it by saying how I used to be slimmer....I go shopping and I don't even bother to look at perfectly normal, lovely clothing because I seem to have subconsciously (or otherwise) decided that I could never wear something like x, y, z. All of this might seem extreme given that I seem to be less overweight relative to some people on this forum - but I am sure these are issues we all share to varying degrees. Also, I am so short and small in frame that my weight is probably largely as evident as others. All in all, I suppose I subconsciously 'decided' I was chubby years ago and have become obese as a result. It is such an unhealthy pattern. GOALS First goal: get under 80kg. Second: get under 70kg. I want to take it as it comes. But, longer term: to be 60kg or under. 55kg would be ideal. 60kg would be great, too. NSV: Throw out all the old clothing I have been wearing to cover up - aka my 'fat' clothes. NSV: Buy size 28 jeans for comfort, like I used to. I am currently in a 32 of the same jean. To be honest it's really hard to write my goals as I have not yet even conceptualised this working! It has been so long since I lost weight and felt good that I can't even remember....perhaps I will work on the goal list later! I'm also gonna post some headless pics....I think that will help me... Anyway, this is a start. I have an appointment on Monday to see the Dr and take bloods...then it's straight to it on Tuesday. Wish me luck!
  5. Had ESG in Sept 2018. I went from 204 to 121lbs in 10 months. Yay!! Only was really shooting for 155 but I feel good at 121 but could certainly stand to get some muscle back and probably put on a little weight ( I’m 5’7”). So I’ve begun walking and doing some weight training the last couple weeks. All was hood the first week or two as I wasn’t real consistent. I was eating around 1600 cal as that was helping me maintain my weight at least. Then I weighed myself Friday and I was 118!!! I know I need to eat more calories but not sure exactly how much. I know I can play with it and see what works but I also have a hard time upping the calories. At 1600-1700 I feel like I eat all day. Ideas?

    Just...waiting

All I can emphatically add to this is to keep on top of everything they are doing until you get that letter. I had a great team with Guthrie but my pcp was horrible. In fact, I had many issues with my weight and depression for it before and saw my pcp for two years, begging for help. Finally, after my birthday and hitting an unbelievable depression, my husband did his own research and found Guthrie for me. When we asked the pcp, she was unconcerned and wouldn't call back but Guthrie has taken over. So, everything is ready, six months up, all testing done and it gets submitted. I had this feeling about my pcp. I get a message from my NUT at Guthrie saying they thought they had the pcp letter ( which they asked for 4 months prior) but didn't seem to have it. So basically I spent the next 3 weeks going back and forth with the Dr in person (during covid) and calling. The receptionist, nurses and the administrator all were apologetic and I am convinced they tried to push every time I showed up about it as they stated. Finally, I threatened to get any Dr willing to write it from the practice and got it. After that, it did take a couple weeks for it to get past the processing phase and then the surgery was scheduled for 10 weeks from that date but just two weeks later I got a call saying to start my liquid diet TODAY; surgery moved up to 13 days from that point; about 7 weeks earlier then scheduled. With the best of them, you still have to just get on top of it. If you have any niggling thought that something could be off for the paperwork or submissions, just get with the scheduler or one in charge of that with your surgeon. It's getting there! Should be no time now :-).
  7. Whoa talk about an emotional roller coaster!! Am I alone with these MOOD SWINGS?? One minute I think so positive and feel like this is going to be easeir than I thought. Next minute Im ready to crawl into bed and just cry, feeling tired and kind of sick to my stomach. My muscles have been sore today also, I haven't done anything weird and I have had a lot of water. Only 4 more days!

    low carb vs. weight watchers

Isnt it funny how the topic of diet is such an emotive one? We're all prone to getting defensive about our choices. I always feel compelled to argue the low carb point because I really believe its unhealthy and not necessary. Why? What does it matter to me what someone on the other side of the world eats? And likewise, why would someone care if I eat 10 slices of white bread a day? But they do. I think we do pretty well to discuss this without fighting, lol. Really, a lot of what you like to do is personality dependent. Some people love the discipline of calorie counting or food group watching, and whilst I consider it dysfunctional dieting behaviour best left in my past, for others its a healthy focus and the way they like to live. My mother lives on weight watchers, she just is so used to it and there's nothing dysfunctional or unhealthy about her approach to food, OR her weight. I like to eat what I want, when I want and not following ANY program has not caused me to eat around the band at all because my motivation is to be fit, healthy and thin and I look at a Mars Bar and can see that that will not help me stay that way. Kudos to all of us for finding our own path.

Not feeling well on liquid diet?

Leila, I have to say that I do not have to have a pre-op diet and I'm quite confident in the Dr. I have. (He's from the Boston, Mass. area.) Anyway, I was, however, required to lose 10 pounds prior to my surgery and I had to keep it off or my surgery was a deal breaker. I do know that there are many people in my support group who have had to have a pre-op diet with him and many who did not have to have one. It really depends on each person, their weight is a factor and the Dr. can tell after he feels around your belly too see if it will be easy to manipulate in surgery. For example a softer belly verses a hard belly. From what I understand, for surgery, you want the softer belly. I'm sure all Dr.'s have different opinions/reasons or methods. Of course we want what's best for surgery, one thing my Dr. does tell his patients is that if there is a problem they will NOT revert to open surgery. They will stop the procedure. Which I know some might be pissed about, but I'd want to talk to my Dr. to see what the problem was before I went ahead and be banded. This is just MO. Does anyone know if there is any bloodwork that is done to help the Dr. find out how fatty the liver is? I gues I will ask my surgeon when I see him next week.

BEST NSV EVER! This make it ALL worth it!

That is sooo COOL!!!!! I graduated in '86 and haven't been to any of my HS reunions either (not even my 20th, 2 yrs ago!). For the same reason. I was thin in HS and started gaining after I got married at 19. I didn't feel comfortable going. I plan on going to the next one, even if I'm not at goal yet. I think I'll just be feeling better about myself. I have seen a few people since that still live here and I hate meeting up with them. Of course no one has said anything but my imagination fills in the blanks for me! UGH!! Thanks for sharing your NSV!!!

    My new furniture arrives today...

My 10-year old daughter does the same sort of stuff. A few times now, she's brought her leftovers in from the car (an accomplishment in itself) and then left it on the counter - right beside the refrigerator! C'mon! The BF does the same stuff. 1/2 full cups on the dresser, in the bathroom, clothes on the floor beside the hamper. Is effort just not in their vocabulary?

    Mexico???

HI..Just a little bit about myself.. My insurance will not pay as well. I have been researching and researching. I have choosen to have surgery in Mexico with Dr. Ortiz. My schedule date is Nov 14th. I have asked and asked on this board about Mexico and about the Doctors. I made my decision due to the fact that I found out that Dr. Ortiz is a teaching doctor and the doctor that I have chose to use after my surgery in the United States, was proctored by Dr. Ortiz. Carolyn that works for Dr. Ortiz is wonderful and she will answer any and all (trust me, I think I have emailed her 10 million times)of your questions. ....Good Luck with your choice....

    WL rate for over 50

I just turned 57. I had surgery Feb 19. Since Jan 2014 I have lost over 50 pounds. My blood pressure is normal. I do not snore and gird is gone. Also arthritis pain is gone thanks to surgery. While I hope to lose more weight I am so happy. I seem to lose slower than others I feel healthier than I have from several decades I just recently started walking and exercising. I would recommend surgery if you have your doctor's blessings. Good luck and keep us posted.

    WL rate for over 50

I am 61. So far I've lost 32 pounds since surgery on 2/19. (52 since I started my diet almost a year ago). I feel it is going really slow compared to some people. I try to eat what I'm supposed to (okay, I ate 3 French fries when I went out to dinner with my hubby a few weeks ago) but that's the extent of my cheating. I walk a lot, and will start back at the health club again next week. It gets very discouraging...especially when I see people dropping as much weight in a few weeks as I've done in over 3 months. I know everybody loses weight differently but darn, I wish the pounds would fall off of me. I know I am losing sizes because I've had to go through my closet a few times already. I guess it will take as long as it takes. At least the weight is going the right way.
  18. You look great. Good job! I too was scared when I lost thirty pounds it seems so unreal. I have never lost anything more that 10-15lbs at a time before I got banded. I can't wait until I too am 70 less. I set a goal to lose at least 30 more by my birthday when I turn the big 30 in August. Your picture has inspired me that I can do it.
  19. Congrats on being banded! I just got mine on July 24th and let me tell you, I am so ready for some real food!! I have been on liquids for 1 week then soft, mushy foods for the 2nd week. Come on scrambled eggs!! During the 1st week, I was able to have pudding, and creamy soups. The best thing was the sugar-free fudgsicles because those allowed you to actually chew. Tomorrow start week 2 for me. So far I have had a great experience(except for the shoulder pain!) I have lost a total of 10 lbs since 5 days before my surgery. But they say this is time for healing, not losing weight. So hopefully it will coming off easier once I'm able to get some real nutrition in me. Well good luck!

    Anyone return to liquid?

I considered myself a slow loser but looking over My Fitness Pal I realized that I needed to change up my nutrition. I went to 600 calories a day, 100 grams of protein, 100 ounces of water, 20 or less carbs, and daily exercise. I got to goal this way losing 1.5 to 2 lbs a week. For me, 800 to 900 calories a day is maintenance and I don't lose a thing. Oh, lost the most weight when I made these changes in Month 6 and hit goal in Month 10 = have been maintaining now for 6 weeks and will hit my 1 year mark on June 4th.
  21. I am pre op and will be starting my pre op diet officially in September. (3 weeks with 50 carb limit a day) Just curious about how much, if any, people lost during their pre op diet - and what their plan entailed…. (As of today 8/10/222, i have already lost 61 lbs from my highest weight last year just through changing my lifestyle and dealing with my binging and emotional eating - am excited for every ounce lost that gains my ability to actually live life)

    Can't Wait

I know what you girls mean. I have been told so many times " you Have such a pretty face but...". Tired of it. I also feel like I am a skinny girl trapped in a fat body. NOt fun at all. I actually was thin my whole life up until 10 yrs ago. I can't wait to be thin again. I am just waiting for the call that its approved. Hopefully mine will be in October. My insurance doesn't require a waiting period.
  23. sexxy219 awwwwww.......... chin up hun you are doing fine congrats on your 3 month weight loss!!!! 71 lbs down so far is great' date=' really!!!!! loosing 10 lbs in a month??? no prob here wish you had a ticker and a profile (hint, hint )so i could see how much more weight you need to lose if you don't have much more to lose you might slow down a bit with your loss - but thats ok kicking up the energy a bit, exercising more is always good - but i wouldn't kick up the lbs some people do that if they have been in a long stall - to "wake" up their system but your system might be "resting" a bit - don't startle it now!!! you'll reach your destination - promise!!! GOD grant me patience, just hurry up about it [/quote'] Yea I just pray I do not have a long stall!!! I'm not gonna claim it!!! I think my body is just adjusting.

    Driving after surgery

As soon as you are not taking narcotics you can drive. You have to know your energy levels though. I drove on day 2, but no longer than 10 minutes each way. Then on day 3 I drive 45 minutes each way and that was too much. Today is day 4 and I finally got a sold straight 8 hours of sleep, so I feel like my energy is much higher.
