    wk 5-2 1/2 PLATEAU!

There will be weeks sometimes months the scale wont move you cant give up and I had to stop weighing myself everyday it only makes things worse. I didnt lose for six months and that was with fills. You body has been overweight for so long it has to adjust and sometimes it just stalls itself out because it was so use to consuming large amounts of calories now it is starving and doesnt want to let go of the fat. keep doing what your doing it will move eventually. Is it frustrating hell yes but we didnt gain it all in three months either. You cant take off 10 to 30 years of weight gain in a few months it doesnt work like that.
  2. hi all i am only about 50 or 60 lbs overweight but with the new fda approval for people in my weight range, i decided to do the surgery. had it on 3/15/11 [edited date] and am just having a lot of chest pain (not worried it's heart problems). after hearing so many horror stories about lap bands (and an equal number of positive stories) i feel like it's just a crapshoot. you do the surgery and just hope and pray that you won't have any problems. the other thing is that my insurance wouldn't cover it so i had to pay $16k cash for this. losing the weight is worth that much to me. i wasn't able to lose it because i took antidepressants for a long time which caused the weight gain to begin with but i believe altered my metabolism. i just have so much anxiety today about the chest pain. i called the dr's office and spoke to a nurse who said it's gas, because it comes and goes. but i'm not so sure. i'm just worried that it might be posisitoned wrong. i don't think i could go through another surgery. it was tough. ugh, i just feel like a made a mistake by doing this. would love to hear from some people who maybe had some problems or concerns early and things passed. appreciate it. pam
  3. Hey all! I had surgery on 3-14-11 and gained weight its only 4 lbs but i have maybe had 1,500 cal. all week because im on the clear liquid diet...also i have had horribal gas... just wanting to know if this is normal, and once the swelling and what not goes down will i wake up one morning and be like 5 lbs down or something? help please?

    Weight gain

Cipro can cause weight gain. I wouldn't worry.
  5. Hi all, I have been in maintaince mode since Sept., having reached my goal. I had a couple bad days and gained like 2 pounds. Over the last three days I have been very much back on track, eating like I did when I was loosing. However, each day I have gained 1/2 pound. 1/2 pound wouldn't worry me, but it happened 3 days in a row- 1.5 pounds seems signicant to me. Anyway, I went on an antiobiotic (cypro) for a UTI the other day and wonder if that could be it. Anyone know if antiobiotics can cause weight gain?

    told my parents

My mom is like that. She lost around 30 lbs a few years ago and she's like, "why can't you just eat smaller quantities and maintain a healthy lifestyle and exercise every day and make sure you you don't exceed 1500 calories" yadda yadda yadda. Easier said than done. I'm one of the few people on earth who know that she has been vomiting her meals into plastic bags, for years. I think that any diet that's success depends entirely on my willpower is doomed to fail eventually. I'm just not that strong a person. And truth is 95% of diets result in failure and weight gain (try googling a UCLA research about dieting, that's where I got the 95% number from). Sleeve gastrectomy has a 70% success rate, that's more than any diet can offer.
  7. Hello all, I had the lap band done in august 2009. I was given 8 hours to recover and discharged..this from a "center of excellence"...well i was given liquis roxicet...and no other instuctions as to my other meds i should take. I went through withdrawl from my pain meds since i have polymyositis...i couldnt beleive it! Less than 2 weeks later i was at a camping site having my family wait on me hand and foot...just enjoying it...then outta no where...POP...N PAIN LIKE U WOULDNT BELEIVE!!! my beely looked like i was carrying sextuplets...it was shiney and purple from the distention...911 was called...2 ambulance rides..and enough pain meds to bring down a horse (as the paramedic said) i was still in so much pain i went into shock! I should have known that this journey would be hell for me. I was told by my dr that he found nothing unusual....SERIOUSLY!!! whey DID I WAKE UP IN ICU 2 DAYS LATER, WITH A NASO GASTRIC TUBE AND ALL TYPES OF DRAINAGE TUBES..PIC LINE 2 IV'S???? After that my hell began...first cpl of months where ok besides the sliming and vomiting... i lost 123 lbs in total...but i paid the price...i laid on the couch to weak and in too much pain tp do anything but vomit up even Water..my hair was falling out in clumps...i had rashes all over my body..dark bags under my eyes..then it got scary...i started to pass out and have seizures. my dr told me all my blood work was fine and i needed to eat more SO I COULD ABSORB THE NUTRIENTS!well if my labs where fine then why would i need to eat ( and vomit) more for the nutrients?! finally my husband had it...took me to mass general...was told it was not "in my head" and yes i was hyper sensitive since i was having a severe allergic reaction to the band...and it should have never been put in since i have an auto immune disease!! Mass general contacted my doc and i was in later that week to haver it out...so needless to say 6 abdominal surgeries later and countless tests in a lil wary. since my band was removed i have gained 90 lbs back in the first 6 months.. diabetes and high blood pressure is back...and not to mention the pain i suffer from all this weight gain, i have wanted to get the vertical sleeve now since the removal..(and i wasnt about to let that dr do the revision after the removal). Thank you for the website and stories...this makes me more at ease with my decision to move foward..did anyone else have a horrific outcome like this? i mean i researched the center and the doc..i am in health care so i knew his reputation in the community...i guess i got him on his bad days...sigh..again ty for the time and place to vent!...GOD BLESS...AND GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNIES!
  8. I was banded March 2nd and was on liquids for two weeks and started mushies yesterday. I was dying for chinese food and I had it finally yesterday. I had steamed moo shou with sauce on the side. I was fine when I weighed my self.. i stood the same 25 lbs down since surgery. Today, I had liquids all day and had a little of the left over chinese food before class. Than six hours later I ate a little more and still have plenty left for tomorrow, but I have gained six pounds. I am so upset and I feel so guilty for eatting! Is that normal? I am so discourage and I do not know what I did wrong. Should I wait to eat until I get my first fill.. even though the first two weeks were tourcher..

    It's not about you....

My journey... My weight loss... My weight gain... My progress.... My thoughts... My feelings... My prayers... My beliefs... My faith... Noticing a trend here? My and by my I mean Me. This is the best thing I've ever done for myself. My journey is not yours, nor is yours mine. I wouldn't want it any other way. I'm here to encourage and uplift by my blogs, thoughts and comments. Spread love and encourage nothing else. I see/hear some comments and receive some that just leaving me with a blank look on my face and going *blink...blink*, your issues are not mine, feel free to share and comment but be careful to not try to PUSH/DUMP/UNLOAD your issues or feelings on me or anyone else, I wonder when some of you will stop trying to find yourself in others and find yourself within. That's when this REALLY works, when anything YOU really wants to do works. Whether it's weightloss, business, or something else. You have to find it within YOURSELF to do it, just as I have to find it within MYSELF to do it. We should all want those around us to be our very best, and we should encourage them and love on them until they reach it. Just my two cents.
  10. Thanks for the support ! I will take it of again, and I no it ! I had a great surgeon, but that's all he was, Move em in, and move em out.. He even told me I'm a surgeon, that's how I make my money... So for follow up care,,,,,,, he wasn't worth a damn. He overfilled me, and never gave me water to check it. So I found out when I got home. It was a hot day in July, and I wanted a sip, It came right back up, so I tried again, same thing. I called and they said you have to come back! (NO KIDDING) So I went back, and he stuck ethe needle in the port, and the plunger shot clean up to the top.(4cc band) I heard him say WOWWWWW! I asked what's wrong? He said when that happens it usually means the Band is blown. So he emptied me, and wouldn't see me again, The last time his PA threw me out because of weight gain... I was laid off, and that was the last of my Ins. I wanted to get it fixed, and she said "DON'T YOU GET IT,,, HE DOESN'T WANT TO SEE YOU, COME BACK WHEN YOU LOST WEIGHT, AND WE'LL SEE ABOUT A FILL !) I said yeagh ! I get it now, and was escorted out. So I had my paperwork sent to another Dr., and they said we don't no about you, you eat cake, cookies, pies... I said WHAT ! you're talking to a lady that lost over 120lbs., how'd that happen then?. They couldn't figure why he had no notes on my weight loss.................................. So this Thursday will be 3 weeks since my fill, there was nothing wrong with the band ! ! ! I have lost 19lbs., I have very good restriction, and I meet with the surgeon April 13, A surgical PA did a better job then a Bariatric Surgeon.. At a Center of Excellence, and Chief Surgeon. So I have summer cloths that are nice, some still have the tags on them. Maybe not this year, but for sure next year.. I wrote a post titled I WANT THIS PIECE OF JUNK OUT Looking for a Dr. Near Saint Helen, Michigan. Check that out, and read the whole thing if you want. Should be from page 2-10. Somewhere in there. Good Health to you ! Thanks for writing, Shirley.
  11. No I dont judge people on their weight gain or loss or if they stay the same. I support people just like people have supported me. I take a personal issue with Spartan because in a previous post he said "thats why military men would rather be deployed than spend time with their wives." Seeing how I am a military wife, that statement pissed me off! Everything he says has no value to me. What a stupid thing to assume! So yep I have zero tolernce for someone like that!

    Weight gain-is it normal?

My doctor said no...but I am convinced that the gas they shoot you up with is the reason for an early weight gain. LOL He said its because your body goes into a protective mode for a few days after surgery thus saves anything you put in your body. I dont know what to believe but can tell you after 2 weeks of liquid and 1 week of mushies ...unless you are drinking fat ladened milk shakes you should lose weight! Stay off the scale.

    Weight gain-is it normal?

weight gain is NORMAL right after surgery. I think about 97%- 99% of all people that will give you feedback will tell you they gained weight right after but lost it quickly. Good Luck on your journey
  14. I had my surgery yesterday and am up 5 pounds today -- am assuming this is pretty normal and probably the body's way of reacting to "trauma" and IV fluids, meds, etc? I know it can't be from overeating ha ha. I didn't get upset when I saw the scale, for maybe the first time in my life, but I just wanted feedback. Was this anyone else's experience? Thanks everyone!

How great, it's always wonderful when our families are supportive. . . i didn't tell my mom until i was about 2 or 3 months out. . . she is a major drama queen and of course when i told her, she had me in my coffin and buried right away. . . Now at over 1 year out she thinks i'm going to regain everything back because i gained about 20 lbs over 6 months. . . she is sooo funny. . . but all i can say is be careful after 1 year out. . . what they say about weight gain IS true. . .I'm really watching now that i don't go up anymore and it's been working well. . .I don't think i'll hit my ultimate goal of 180, but that is ok! for now I am grateful I'm not 350 anymore. My hubbie is glad I'm not losing anymore he thought i was going to die too  God bless our families! . . . . good luck!

Girls: Depo Provera and the Lapband

I know I packed on a lot after being on Depo, but was off it for 2 years and did not lose much. I am back on it and BOTH the surgeon and Gyno said it has very little to do with weight gain/retention. My loss has been good with band, but I wonder if it would be better without it. I want to switch BC methods, but neither doc wants me on the pill because I am 42. The Gyno and I have discussed some permanent things, but I don't know about going that route either. I have no kids, and probably won't have any, but am just unsure about taking a permanent step. Good job to stop the Depo now and let it cycle out. It takes a long time to regulate after wards. Best of luck,

    Brigham and Women/Faulker Hospital

Ok---I hate the new format of this website. I couldn't find this thread to save my life and wonder if that's why no one (Other than me!) seems to come on here any more! I'm 3.5 weeks post op for my foot. I can't believe how much faster/better I've healed this time around---and can't help but think about the nutritional implications of having a band. Mine still hasn't been "re-clamped". Went to see Dr. R again yesterday. Finally made wait. I finally have come to realize that EVERY visit I have with him, I'm more confused by what he says....and it's no longer my fault. He initially arrived and asked if I had come for a fill. Maybe he should start working to read a patient's file before entering the exam room?! It was just odd---so I made weight. I lost enough for them to re-submit to my insurance company. Mind you--I have all of the hardware still in me. Seems simple enough. He made a comment about how I "already was assigned a surgery date" but must have forgotten he told me I had to lose weight or he wouldn't do it. I was scheduled to go in 2 weeks ago and canceled when I thought I might not make weight. Was scheduled for surgery tomorrow, but was canceled when I canceled weigh in. This whole experience has me shaking my head---and I don't know if I have even explained it clearly because I don't understand any of it. Here's my one big question---I'm waiting for them to submit for insurance and for my new surgery date. Do any of you remember if I have to see HIM again before surgery? GOD, I hope not---but not just because talking with him is exasperating, but because I can't possibly not gain weight if I'm a few months out from surgery again. If I was honest with all of you and told you what I had to do to make weight this time, you'd be horrified.....but you've gotta do what you've gotta do. If he didn't hold me to this odd standard, I wouldn't have been forced to do it. Sad thing is, I'm still well within their "40 to 60% of excess body weight lost" category yet nearly couldn't have surgery again if I couldn't drop at least 5 pounds. Yep. 3+ years out. Even with my weight gain, I'm at 58% excess body weight lost. AND yet Dr. R wasn't sure I'd be able to have the stupid thing re-clamped if I couldn't drop 5-10 pounds to SHRINK my effing liver. I'm guessing my liver is far smaller NOW than it was when he did the original surgery and I weighed over 300 pounds. So....I'm confused. I'm annoyed that my life has been on hold since Thanksgiving. I don't want to have to agonize that I'll be weighed in again before I finally have surgery. I'm waiting for my phone to ring. Let's hope they're prompt!!! How are the rest of you? When is the next meeting????

From: How many carbs should I eat?

Here is a real interesting article about carbs: http://www.marksdail...rate-continuum/ I was looking for a threshold of what constitutes "low carb". I am usually teetering around 100g. I was never scared of carbs, but I guess since it seems to work for others, maybe I should try it. But then, I just hate the thought of trying to figure out good carbs, bad carbs in my log. I mean, an orange has 20g of carbs, and I don't want to fear those - how do I split that in MFP. Anyway, I found the below really interesting, here is part of the article that I'd like to share. From that, I will really try to stay between 50 and 100g: 300 or more grams/day - Danger Zone! Easy to reach with the “normal” American diet (cereals, pasta, rice, bread, waffles, pancakes, muffins, soft drinks, packaged snacks, sweets, desserts). High risk of excess fat storage, inflammation, increased disease markers including Metabolic Syndrome or diabetes. Sharp reduction of grains and other processed carbs is critical unless you are on the “chronic cardio” treadmill (which has its own major drawbacks). 150-300 grams/day – Steady, Insidious Weight Gain Continued higher insulin-stimulating effect prevents efficient fat burning and contributes to widespread chronic disease conditions. This range – irresponsibly recommended by the USDA and other diet authorities – can lead to the statistical US average gain of 1.5 pounds of fat per year for forty years. 100-150 grams/day – Primal Blueprint Maintenance Range This range based on body weight and activity level. When combined with Primal exercises, allows for genetically optimal fat burning and muscle development. Range derived from Grok’s (ancestors’) example of enjoying abundant vegetables and fruits and avoiding grains and sugars. 50-100 grams/day – Primal Sweet Spot for Effortless Weight Loss Minimizes insulin production and ramps up fat metabolism. By meeting average daily protein requirements (.7 – 1 gram per pound of lean bodyweight formula), eating nutritious vegetables and fruits (easy to stay in 50-100 gram range, even with generous servings), and staying satisfied with delicious high fat foods (meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds), you can lose one to two pounds of body fat per week and then keep it off forever by eating in the maintenance range. 0-50 grams/day – Ketosis and Accelerated Fat Burning Acceptable for a day or two of Intermittent Fasting towards aggressive weight loss efforts, provided adequate protein, fat and supplements are consumed otherwise. May be ideal for many diabetics. Not necessarily recommended as a long-term practice for otherwise healthy people due to resultant deprivation of high nutrient value vegetables and fruits. Lyrica?

I was on it before I had the lapband surgery. And I gained a lot of weight. When I started complaining about the weight gain my dr. changed my medication to cymbalta, but then that made me so sleepy all day. Once I had the surgery my pain stopped so I stopped taking the medication. I am sure once you start losing weight the pain will stop. Good luck.

    Back to square one

Thanks Thinoneday. Your story you shared with us sounds exactly what I just went through. Except my stall and slight weight gain went on for 6 months. During that time I was going through the fostering process to get my nephew out of foster care and into my home. I stopped betting down the munching monster. I too gave myself a stern talking to and decided I was NOT going to throw away the thousands of dollars I paid to have this tool. I was going to work it for all it's worth. I am back on track now and slowly loosing again. The bad eating demon is going to be a constant monkey on my back. Thanks again for posting your story. Will
  21. I have fibromyalgia and my doctor suggested Lyrica to me today. She also said it may cause weight gain. Oh, HELL NO! I'll try it, but the minute my weight loss slows, I'm off it. Has anyone here had any experience with Lyrica?

    I'm here to help...

Hi Peeps! Lori, glad you made it safe to Denver so you could snuggle with Katelyn......can't wait to see the pictures of four generations. LauraK, sorry you aren't feeling too well. Probably this dang wishy-washy weather. Yesterday was beautiful. Today t-storms and my Fibromyalgia has kicked in. I just don't know why it tightens my band. I ate some chicken an hour ago and just finished pbing. I need a fill, but days like this....no way! Jewel.....I have low thyroid. You can't go to sleep at night and you don't want to get up in the morning. Also, weight gain especially Water weight. I think mine is a little high right now. I get really hot and have a hard time cooling down. Nope....not hot flashes, been there, done that! Hi Eva....come plant my garden......please? lol Apples, you are a busy lady this week. I just took a chicken pot pie out of the oven for a young family at church. The mother of three just got out of the hospital with kidney stones......you can relate. They told her she still has four of them in her kidney. So, tonight it is chicken pot pie, salad, and peach cobbler with ice cream. She is real tiny so she can use the carbs. Sndy.....glad you got a break from caring for dad. Caregivers need time for themselves. Hi Janet and Phy......you too Peaches! Linda, My DH gets up at 4am for work. I did go back to bed for a couple of hours.......feeling achy today, but moving around makes me feel better. I am a morning person. They say when you get older you tend to even get up earlier. They upside is you can get all your stuff done before anyone wakes up(kids). I hope you are feeling better. Well, gotta go deliver a meal. Later!

    I FEEL FAT!!!!

I don't really know what to tell you about getting the fat person out of your head, but I do know what you mean. In the past three weeks I've put five pounds back on and I feel HORRIBLE. It's literally the first time in the two years since I've been banded that I've gained weight. I need a fill, for sure. I can eat bread (which I've never been able to do before no matter where my restriction level has been), which is not good. Anyway. Once you get used to your body being a certain place, it feels bad when it goes back (especially when you know how that weight gain felt before). I get that on a 225 pound girl like myself, 5 pounds isn't a ton. But it sure feels like it. I hate getting dressed for work because everything feels tight again. Dig in and get yourself back where you want to be. The whole weight loss thing takes longer as you get smaller. So that 15 pounds is just about the same as dropping 90 when you were bigger. Good luck and don't lose hope!

Girls: Depo Provera and the Lapband

Well I had major side effects I gained 100lbs in 9 months with Depo that is what started my weight gain for me and I have never been able to loose more that 50-60lbs since. I am praying that with lapband I will get below 200 agian! The other problem is that my Blood pressure shot out of control and since depo have not been able to use any other birth conrol because my BP shoots up. I had been on BC for 5 years before depo an never had a problem. I think people on Depo should really read the research and see all the problems it has caused for many people!
  25. Dawn: It's funny how you and I were sleeved nearly the same day, and go through so many similar things at the same time. I'm about 9 days into a stall where I fluctuate losing and gaining the same pound. I weigh myself daily, religiously, at the same time. I disagree with not weighing daily. I wrestled in college, and if I didn't weigh daily, I would have never made weight. My weight-gains always coincided with a lack of wanting to see the proof on the scale. The scale provides accountability. I think its more how you react to the information, then the fact that you gather the information. About the stall, I feel great too, and I've STILL (sadly) have not started a regular work out routine. And I must admit that this week I had a LOT of work, so it was more hours with my butt in the chair, than other weeks where I've been traveling, having to walk a lot in the field, etc. So perhaps behavior (i.e. diet and [lack of] exercise) have something to do with the stall, but alternatively, it might be a bit of our bodies playing catchup. I know that relative to 3 weeks ago, I'm thinner, because I can only wear a pair of 35 inch pants that were a bit tight just 3 weeks ago. So, I have to cut myself some slack. At the same time, I'm about 25 pounds from being somewhere where I'd be comfortable stopping and maintaining. So, let's hope that we break out of this rut soon. I'm starting a gym tomorrow, so we'll see if that helps! Matt
