What's been your lightbulb moment?
SassyTink replied to Indigo1991's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My light bulb moment happened this week. I had my surgery on November 22 and have done pretty well. I have stayed the course and have not swayed from my list of acceptable Protein options prior to this mini vacation. This week I went to San Francisco to care for my aged father. When I arrived in SF I went to the market immediately and bought my Dannon light and fit yogurt, cottage cheese, Light Baby Bel cheese and turkey slices before I even went to my Dad's. I wanted to make sure I continue to make good choices when it came to food. Seven days later....... I am home and food wasn't an issue. For the first time in decades I took control of my eating habits when visiting the family in San Francisco. I said NO to a cannoli, NO to a Joe's hamburger, NO to a Tostada, NO to a crepe, etc.......my response was, "Can I meet you afterwards?" I always carried a Baby Bel Cheese in my purse and always felt satisfied. I came home 4 pounds lighter and the feeling........I GOT THIS! -

Endoscopy? Pre Op diet?
melhach replied to WickedRebelRose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm from New Brunswick, Canada and my surgeon requires a 2 week liquid boost diet! Less then 900 calories a day with a 2 cup vegetable allowance steamed or raw I have fears of starving lol feb 25 is my surgery date so I start my liquid diet on the 11 which is the day after my birthday -
You are all so right! I need to take this all in stride...usually I can handle set backs. I leave for Las Vegas three days after this fill, which is my anxiety of being too restricted ( don't mind softer foods but I don't want to be sick like I see in these forums). Ok I said it. On the other hand my goal is the green zone. I'll continue my workouts and healthy eating and stay away from scale...limit calories and maintain portion size. Again thank you all for the encouragement.

I just had a 0.5cc unfill. So I hear your anxiety. All we can do is count on our good habits that we have developed to keep us moving forward. Don't concentrate on the scale. Our focus should be on our health. How is your blood pressure? Your sugar? Your cholesterol? There are other methods of measuring success. Being banded is a lifetime journey to make our health better. It is NOT just about the scale. Yes, we want the weight gone, and we want it gone yesterday, but that isn't always going to happen. This is a marathon, not a sprint. It is time to change your battle plan for the time being. Adjust your outlook. As obese people, we ALWAYS fear regain. Hasn't it happened every other time we've gone on a diet? We don't exactly have track records of success to help calm us down. But we didn't have our bands to help us in the long run. Over the course of your lifetime, Augsut 3, or 3 weeks, is miniscule. You will get through it. After my unfill, I was able to schedule a refill for July 16, now I have to travel for work that week, so I have to reschedule..ugh... I REALLY am right there with you!

I had the lap band placed over 4 years ago...don't regret it all. I am very happy with my decision in getting it. However..... When I first got the band, I had this pain for the first week or so after surgery that was like a "tearing" or "ripping" pain all over my stomach when I stood up and tried to walk around....I called my doctor, got checked out, no infection and was told that it was pretty common to have abdominal pain after abdominal surgery (lol). The pain eventually subsided in the beginning. But then it came back about a month later and has come back a couple times a month since then. I obviously went back to my doctor and he again said it was not band related and to check with my GI doctor...so I did. Here's all the tests I've had done: Colonoscopy Fluoroscopy EGD CAT scan Hida scan Gastric emptying Multiple trips to the ER they found I had gallstones and said that could be what was causing it, so I had my gallladder removed......but STILL have this pain! The pain feels like it starts in the center of my stomach, right below my sternum or on the left lower rib and radiates ALL over abdomen, back and chest. It is a CONSTANT tearing , ripping, pain that when severe, has made it even hard to walk without cringing. Sitting and laying down the pain subsides quite a bit, but as soon as I stand up its, in my words, ON FIRE! Doctor told me I had IBS from when I had colonoscopy, but people with IBS usually feel relief with (excuse me) passing gas or with bowel movement. Mine does not. And people with IBS usually feel it after eating particular foods...mine is not triggered by certain foods. For instance, this morning I woke up with the pain....first thing in the morning. The only thing that seems to help the pain is ibuprofen 800mg or sometimes narcotics. I've tried gasx, tums, and pepto and those don't work, I do have ovarian cysts and very heavy menstrual cycle (sorry guys who are reading!) but my doctor doesn't seem to think that the pain would go up that high. But what about endometriosis? That runs in my family. Anyways....if anyone has any insight, feel free to share. 4 years of this is tiring when I don't know what it is.

When did you start to work out and what did you do?
michellenc posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi I am 15 days out and walking around the neighborhood and doing quite a bit of mall walking. But I am wanting to get back into the gym. I see my Dr on Thursday so I will ask too. But I am curious when did you go back to the gym? I just want to walk on the treadmill, elliptical and bike. No weights for 6 weeks I was told. I want to work my way back up to running again and figure out the whole hydration thing while sipping and running. I think it might be hard. I am down 32 lbs but I want to get the ball rolling even faster and hope going back to the gym will help. Thanks, Michelle -
Congrats on the total (and weekly) weight loss. I know I have to start adding exercise in! Our summer break starts this coming week so there is no excuse for not walking in the am or going to join the Y. Hopefully that will pick up the weight loss. I'm getting lots of compliments with my weight loss so far (nobody knows, except my husband, that I had WLS). Hopefully you are to. I am doing the Chobani with granola at lunch. I'm still doing protein shakes for breakfast because they are fast/easy and I can drink it while I am getting dressed. I usually supplement with a Atkins bar around 10 a.m.ish

do you crush all your medications?
RedSalamander replied to boosh10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No crushing here for all the reasons mentioned above. I'll be 2 weeks out tomorrow and I've been swallowing all my pills with no problems. -

I'm so excited, nervous, scared, anxious, and elated....I have a surgery date scheduled for December 28. I only have a 3 day liquid diet scheduled which I find odd that it isn't longer. However, I will take it. If anyone has any advise for the hospital and the first few days/weeks after I would greatly appreciate it........a new year, and a new me. Can't wait.

If you've lost weight, how much exercise did you do to get there?
cwaye replied to sfwaitinginma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is my first post on this site. I was banded in June; I have lost 50 pounds so far. I work out quite a bit. I find the weight just doesn't come off for me unless I am at the gym 3 or more times a week. I do one hour classes; I average about 4 days there per week. For me, classes are ideal because I don't like to work out. The classes are always different and I won't leave or quit in the middle if I get tired. If I'm on a treadmill, I tend to not push myself very hard. At first, I found myself modifying quite a bit of what the instructor was doing, but now I can keep up pretty well. I have a skinny friend with a heartrate monitor thingy and she burns around 600 calories per class. I figure I'm probably doing close to the same...I'm bigger so I burn more than she does, but I'm also not quite able to do as much of the high impact stuff she does yet... -
If you've lost weight, how much exercise did you do to get there?
bambam31 replied to sfwaitinginma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I'm still a work in progress, but I can tell you that I lost the first 35 pounds with very little exercise. I thought this was going to be a cakewalk! Then... well... it all came crashing to a stop. So I started riding my bike moderately but the weight loss was a slow crawl... Then I joined a gym and started doing Spin classes. Whoa! That's when I found out what intense exercise means... I thought I was going to die for the first 3 classes. Then it started getting easier and I had to push myself harder with more resistance. And now I do 5-7 spin classes a week, combined with a small amount of strength training. I went for my 5th fill last week and had gone from a standstill to losing 17 pounds... My fitness level is getting better every week and my heart rate recovery time is falling consistently. I'm with Jachut on this... You have to challenge yourself. If you walk 2 miles along the same path all the time - your body will become efficient at doing it and you'll no longer get the same result. The harder you work - the higher the result - plain and simple. Brad -
If you've lost weight, how much exercise did you do to get there?
Oregondaisy replied to sfwaitinginma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to exercise 6 days a week. I have a very slow metabolism and if I didn't exercise, there is no way I would have lost or kept losing. I did the stair master, walking/jogging on the treadmill, and the eliptical machine anywhere between 30-60 min per day, as well as weight training. Building muscle will make our bodies burn more calories even at rest. -
Its been 3 weeks and I have to say that I am pleased with my band so far. The hardest part for me was the liquid stage but now that I am on the puree/mushie stage, which pretty much for me equals soups, fish and very soft veggies...life is great. Its so weird that although I have no fill yet, I can only eat small amounts and dont feel hungry all that often. Even this weekend, I was at a party and told myself that I would cheat and got a peice of fried chicken...after two bites and chewing for a million times...I decided that I wasnt hungry and no longer desired the chicken and put it down. Ohhh and the weight is starting to slowly come off... Things are on the up and up!

:thumbup:okay so i am now a little over six months into post op, and i have so much energy. unfort. my back doesn't keep up. as crazy as it seems i love mowing the lawn, have been hiking and even to a few very fast paced concerts. i am now down 81 lbs and can get into a 22, it is an accomplishment. but every now and then i feel like what the heck i still look big, but i remember it wasn;t how i looked that bothered me but what i couldn' do and then i am ok. it is so hard to get everything in and some days i still do nothing but the drinks. i am supposed to go next week for my fill but think maybe i will just discuss the feeking of irratation in my incision instead. i hope everyone else is having great sucesses!

:thumbup:Today is the road to a new chapter in my life. I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am and I am the first case. Im very excited and nervous at the same time. I didnt get any sleep last night and my stomach is a bit upset but I hope they give me something at the hospital. I dont know why Im so nervous this time, Ive had many surgeries in the past and havent felt quit like this before. I update as soon as I can. Good luck to any other Bandsters this week.

Well i usually get hiccups alot and bad since I always ate and drank to fast. I would get them really deep too! I have been banded a week and haven't had the hiccups at all...probably because I slowed down my eating habits. If you do I have a hug pillow that I hug to my stomach when i sneeze and cough and that helps a lot too! Good luck with your journey into bandland

I was allowed saltines at week 4. If you chew them really well they go down easy.
