WHAT made you choose YOUR SURGEON?
Neri replied to Frustr8's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
In my first attempt, I chose my surgeon because he was in the area, took my insurance, and did bariatric surgeries. Didn't really look up anything about him. It was a mistake. This new surgeon I found through my insurance again, but this time I did more research. He has much better reviews, focuses on obesity medicine, and is part of the program that initially brought bariatric surgery to western PA. -
He's speaking of the hiatal hernia. It's a condition in which part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm muscle. I've watched a ton of the actual surgeries on YouTube and the fix usually consists of a couple stitches. I think all bariatric surgeons are taught to look for this as part of the bariatric surgical procedure.

WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM SURGEONS OFFICE
bunnygirl650 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, have anyone had this problem, I am in the beginning process trying to get the sleeve, I had my pcm put a referral in for me and it took the surgeons office a while to get me scheduled for my orientation even though I know they had the referral , I had to call them many times and I would not get a call back then I called the patient coordinator and she spoke with the scheduler and the scheduler told her she would call me within a week and of course she did not , then I call back after a week then I was scheduled for the orientation. Had the orientation and I meet with the surgeon , his Medical Assistant told me that the bariatric nurse would contact me and if I didn't hear from her in a week to give her a call. I didn't wait a week I called her that Friday and left her a message and I called her the next week many many times and she will not pick up her phone or call me back. I said I was going to go up there on my lunch break Friday if I haven't heard back from her. She is the one who puts referrals in for nutrition and psych and lets you know what you need to do next. I am sag net waiting until she tells me something . This is frustrating waiting on people to do there job. This is more like a rant!! But have anyone experienced people who take there time at doing the things that you need done , if so what did you do. -
Update, received my box from Bariatric Pal store, containing nice protein soup packets. Fixed one up , offered 2 oz cup to Precious Pouch, was even downgraded from teaspoons to taking soups that way temporarily. Pecious did not say " Coming Right Back up" , did I win the War? Doubtful, although I do win an occasional skirmish. She can rock that "I'm swollen thing" a lttle while longer. Come October if she is still feeling ornery we EGD her ornery little self! We will take a look see, dialate my stoma if needed and defuse her little reign of terror. She may think SHE is Queen , but the abberant peicebofvstomach tissue can be put in her place. I own her , not the other way around.

It’s weird. I never saw myself as “fat” unless I was sitting on a plane or at a concert or some other limited space scenario. I never felt unhealthy unless I was at the doctors office and they were telling me how “sick” I was. After a few months everything seems like it’s back to normal, I just eat differently and wear smaller sized clothes. My family loves me the same and my 2 small dogs still don’t listen to me. Deep down, I know lots has changed though. The surgery was worth it just for the improved health and it feels like I’ve turned back the clock 15 yeas in terms of energy. People see me differently at work. The renewed confidence also propelled me to finish my masters degree. So even if I try and downplay the results, they can be felt in almost every aspect of my life.

Hi everyone, I had my sleeve surgery on Tuesday the 18th, I stayed overnight and went home the next day, everything went terrific. The doctor said that my surgery went very very well, he said the pre-op diet had shrunken my liver to normal size, which made things go very well. I also had a hernia repair along with the sleeve, when I went to my room after recovery I set in a chair for about two hours, then I got up and walked two loops around the nurses station which is quite a distance. The only pain I had was in recovery from the gas, they put some pain medicine in the IV and within no time the pain stopped. To be honest, I have had no nausea or vomiting and very little to no pain at all, even in the seven incisions, just a little tender when I touch them. I will give you some very good advice concerning the gas pain, walk walk walk and walk some more! The surgeon that I chose is very good at this procedure, he performs roughly 8 gastric sleeve surgeries per week, in fact he is the one responsible for getting the bariatric weight loss and surgery Center started there at the hospital several years ago. At this point, other than being careful how I have to swallow liquids, it's almost as if I didn't have anything done. Although the doctor is very good at what he does, I give all the credit to the Lord for keeping His mighty and merciful hand upon me, He means everything to me. The Preacher

October 2018 Sleevers
recreating_courtney replied to kdiddle31's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
October 15th seems to be a popular date! My date as well. My 2 week pre-op diet starts on Monday October 1st!!! I have already cut back on the caffeine and carbonation so it won't be such a shock. I really like the premiere protein shakes, so I bought a case of each flavor from Sam's Club. I also found their clear protein drinks to be tasty as well. The flavor is a tad bit strong for my taste, so I have to dilute it. I'm excited to start my pre op diet because that means this is actually happening! It has been almost a year and a half since my first appointment with my bariatric surgeon, and now I'm down to less than a month before surgery!! SOOOOO READDDYYYY!!!!! -
My surgery date is coming

Premier. I tried Bariatric Advantage and I couldn’t handle it. -
Congratulations on your surgery! For the vitamins, try one of those vitamin holds that has different compartments. I have one that has four compartments per day and throw it in my purse so I never forget to take my vitamins. For the calcium, try the bariatric advantage calcium chewables. They taste like starburst. The calcium citrate pills are huge, no matter which brand. The liquids are very important the first few weeks bc it's easy to become dehydrated. No one likes the diet the first few weeks but you will be so happy once you can start eating soft foods and regular foods! Good luck!

BCBSIL Duodenal Switch- Has anyone been approved?
misskim3297 replied to trilla's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I was approved for DS surgery through BCBSIL but it took multiple submissions. They were very picky about all the paperwork. It was denied the first time bc they couldn't find the cover page for the 45 pages that were faxed over. The bariatric coordinator had to offer/threaten to have the surgeon contact the insurance company. Then it got approved lol My BMI was over 50 so I didn't have that issue. You just have to keep on the insurance company and your surgeon's office. Good luck! -
My insurance does not cover bariatric surgery and I'm strongly considering going to have it done in Mexico. I know a few people who did that and it has been a success. I know there are risks, but I feel the benefits may outweigh the risks. I'm just not able to lose weight on my own. I've lost 130lbs before but gained it all back. I feel I need a medical intervention. I cannot afford to self pay. any advice would be helpful thanks

Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
sillykitty replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Yes! There are definitely plenty of good choice that can be made at airports. The whole keto trend is good for us bariatric folks, with cheese, jerky, nuts being readily available. But as we know, having good choice available doesn't always lead us to make those good choices -
It seems that surgeons have their own preferred pre-op methods, some do not require a pre-op diet, some do, some base the pre-op diet on a persons weight, and heavier they are the long their period for pre-op diet. My doctor requires a two week pre-op diet. If you want to give yourself an extra push, there is no reason you can't do a one or two week pre-op diet...here is one, but there are many others out there. http://www.drjalil.com/jalil-illan-bariatric-pre-op-diet.html

I use the Bariatric chewables found through the BP store. Yes, they are pricey but it's a 1-shot deal. I hate swallowing pills so as much as I hate spending the money, it's one less hassle I have to deal with daily. I've heard some people take Flinstones chewables - 2 a day I think to meet the daily need for post op patients.

I'm having trouble keeping up with my vitamins I'm 6 months post op I'm currently using bariatric advantage which are a little pricey does anyone suggest any other brand? if is how many do you take a day or how many different types of vitamins do you use. I usually stick to the healthier snacks, but I have had some "no-nos". Today I had a jellly donut and I beat myself up about for the most part of the day. Last week I had a scoop of ice cream. I'm just trying not get back into the habit of eating these things when I know how slippery that slope is. One problem that I have is lack of time to plan. (something I'm working on). I do believe that is a great tool to avoid choosing not so healthy options. Ive actually made tons of bariatric friendly recipes. Including cauliflower pizza. I even made it for my family and they loved it also!

I think another thing to remember is if you are “snacking” in order to give in to “temptation”, then finding a way to make those foods more healthy and acceptable to your new way of living is a good idea. There are tons of bariatric recipes for pizza, pasta type dishes, many food craving type dishes. You may find a way to make something you are craving that is healthier and almost as appealing. Now in some cases this is just not possible, and only a taste of the original will do and we are all human. Every now and again if it’s something special I will indulge...a homemade cookie, mom’s lasagna, etc. The more weight you lose, the more positive effects you see by making healthy choices...the less you may crave unhealthy diet choices. It may increase your ability to make a healthy choice at any rate, I have found this to be true.

If you are concerned for your health and safety - Ask your bariatric surgeon and your cardiologist.

Hi. I’m new here. I just started the process to get sleeved, and I have 6 months of protocol I have to follow (per my insurance) before I can get it done. My question at the moment is, have any of you experienced frequent premature ventricular contractions at the time of surgery? I’ve been suffering thousands a day for the last 4 months, and scared about whether it will affect my safety during surgery. So far my doctors are calling my condition begning, but I haven’t asked my cardiologist for their all clear for WLS yet, which I have to have per my bariatric surgeon.

I'm past the pureed and onto fish/seafood ground meat, I do eat a little too fast sometimes, but i try to take it slow. I only use baby spoons as well so i don't take big bites. As for my pills some aren't crushable as they are liquid, i have the chewables the doctor gave me the bariatric fusions, i don't have a problem swallowing i just feel like gagging/throwing up every time i take them, like my stomach can't handle it. as for protein there are days i gag on drinking it even if 2 ounces i have the pure protein it's little boxes that you can get a walmart and comes in vanilla, strawberries and cream, caramel, chocolate and banana, i don't like the caramel but love the banana. I do try to drink that when i can. Just normally feels like my stomach is in knots all the time, feels like it's gassy as i eat things and i just feel bloated, i often feel like i have to lay down to even attempt to feel better. One time i tried to drink some antacid and i threw it right back up.

August 2018 sleeve surgery!!
RecreatingTraci replied to susunorm's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I had my surgery on 8/23, and I just came back to work today. Honestly, I could have come back a while ago, but decided to take my time and enjoy some extra time at home with my kiddos. The pain was MUCH less than I anticipated. Recovery room was hell - I was so nauseated and my back was hurting so bad. A few hours later, I really felt pretty good. The only problem I had was getting out of and back into the bed. That was a bit of a struggle. Walking made me feel like a million bucks. The first night home was a little rough - I couldn't get comfortable and slept sitting up in a recliner. That was the only night I took a pain pill, and that was just to help me get to sleep. I'm on soft foods now, and I haven't really found anything that my tummy has rejected other than the time I tried to follow my Bariatric Fusion vitamin with a swig of water. Big mistake - it came right back up. I feel really good, and I'm down almost 30 pounds from my last weight before my pre-op liquid diet. I'm definitely stalling right now -been hovering around the same number for about 9 days. But I knew it would happen right about this time so I'm dealing. Anyone else hit the "3 weeks out stall", and when did it finally let go again? -
I was reading that bariatric surgery doesn't have enough stats yet on the long-term outcomes of patients, so that's one reason there may not yet be much protocol standardization. I appreciate the conservative approach of surgeons; right now I long to have coffee or other things, but I would hate to suffer acid reflux in 5 years because I drank caffeine again too soon, or get gout because I ate too much protein, or some other thing. For those who stay active on this forum long term, it will be interesting to see if there are common problems that befall us in 5-10 years and beyond. I am 70 now, so may not be around in 10 years, but I'm going to enjoy the heck out of the years I have left with this new lifestyle. I think about those in their 20's - 40's who are having the surgery and hope they won't have a future of digestion issues to deal with. I suppose new meds will keep being developed to meet the challenges.

Please Help! Bypass vs. Sleeve Which one to Choose?😅
MargoCL replied to xxtrinaxx's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is really a personal decision. Everyone makes their choice for their reasons. The success rate of both surgeries these days are very similar. Have you discussed your concerns about either surgery with your surgeon? For me, I chose the sleeve because it's least invasive in terms of change to my anatomy. I personally believe that I am strong enough to maintain the healthy lifestyle required with the new tool / gift I've been given. I am 4-weeks post op and so far I've had zero regrets and few to no complications. I'd review every piece a literature available to you regarding the surgeries and ask the questions you are not sure of. I researched my options 6 months prior to seeing a Bariatric group to discuss surgery and even when I had my first appointment I was on the fence as to whether or not I wanted surgery or continue with medically supervised weightloss. But I've always known for me, the sleeve was going to be my choice. -
