  1. It definitely sounds like you need to be talking to your doctor. I just started solid foods at 5 weeks post op and I'm having trouble keeping things down. I think either I'm eating too fast or need to start with foods much easier to digest. Since this is just day 2 I'm learning what my body can tolerate. I love chicken and "think" I'm eating very small bites but can't seem to get down 3 oz. yet. I think the Isopure drinks jurisjitsu recommended would be a terrific way to get your Protein. My surgeon made Nexium24 a standard part of my diet for the first 3 months......that probably helps. I take it first thing in the morning..............break it in half and add it to a teaspoon of yogurt. It's pretty much flavorless so I can get it down pretty easily. Also, I don't know you're physical condition but my surgeon had me up and walking the morning after my surgery. The more walking the better it was for gas pain. We're all so different that it's really best to talk to your surgeon because they know your medical condition. Good luck!
  2. @@jurisjitsu I would schedule another appointment with your surgeon and insist on additional testing to find out what might be wrong. Have you tried Protein drinks (clear) like Isopure? You need some sort of protein. Instead of mashed potatoes, have you tried any mushy foods with protein (hummus, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.).

Ketosis - How safe is it?

The response I received from my Nutritionist was that ketosis usually happens when you consume less than 50 grams of carbs a day. That is about the equivalent of 3 servings of either diary, fruit or starch. She advised that I continue to include healthy Protein sources that have natural carbohydrates (yogurt, milk, legumes). Didn't really answer my question about whether it is safe or not. Maybe that is not an easy answer. My NUT is excellent. I've been using her for over a year and I trust her, but I will ask specifically when we meet next month. Additionally, I ordered the ketosis strips so I can check to see if/when I am actually producing ketones. By the way. I lost another lb. So that was 5 lbs in 7 days. Way more than I've been losing. I also know my appetite has decreased. I am still eating. But there isn't much in the way of hunger at all. Anyone tried the sticks and anyone who specifically stayed in ketosis for a period of time with success...or not?

    Weight gain post surgery. Help!

In the morning I mix isolated whey Protein into sugar free pudding. That's about 20-25 grams. For lunch I usually have Greek yogurt about 11 grams. Then I mix the Protein powder into hummus for about 10 grams for snack. For dinner I started having 2 oz of tuna fish for about 20 grams. Or sometimes I have egg beaters and refried Beans for dinner or even snack for a little more protein. Lauren My New Life

Lifters- How do you work your macros?

Weight lifting is such a broad term and honestly overused term that it is hard to understand what a person means when they say it. When I say it, I mean lifting weights at the limit of my strength currently in order to overload the muscles and cause enough stress to force my body to become stronger. When my wife says it, she just means comfortable weights moved to gain endurance. If you are more interested in my wife's idea of weight lifting, you probably only need the normal recommended macros for a bariatric patient. 60-80 grams of Protein, ditto for complex carbs and then some healthy fats. 1200-1700 calories for a goal weight of 170. If you are looking to actually gain strength, you are going to be looking at 1700-2200 calories and a protein intake up to 150 grams. Complex carbs are still needed, but we are going to need more protein as a % since we are dealing with restricted stomachs. Fats are of course essential, but they have to be good fats! Milk fat in yogurt or regular milk as well as nuts and avacado as an example.

    Just wondering.

My tastes have not changed but they have came more extreme. Things that I was lukewarm on pre-op like scrambled eggs, I hate post-op. Never liked yogurt, despise yogurt now. Loved fish before, really love fish now.

    Cheated on Pre Op Diet

OP- you are not the only one who has cheated and so while not trying to beat you up- you rightfully should be concerned that you may not ready. This isn't to say that perfection is required but it is to say that there are countless people who have this surgery without being equipped with the tools to handle challenges. If a week or two pre-op diet can't be adhered to, what about a lifelong requirement to measure your food, eat Protein first, etc. You may or may not be ready but if you have doubts, then please resolve them before doing something irreversible.Well the thing is, now I am starving. After surgery it will be different. Also, after surgery I was told to have a "treat" every few weeks. For instance, Pasta, etc. things will be different after surgery than they are now. Right now I have a huge stomach and I am use to eating a lot.Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Sigh. They just reduce the size of your stomach. It doesn't reduce your desire to eat crap still. It isn't magic. You still have to actually use a little will power to make it work. You have to exercise and change the way you eat forever. Not just eat, but change the way you even FEEL about eating in general. Yes, there will be times you're even hungry. If you use food comfort now and can't delay gratification, will you have the tools to deal with that post op? Please take all that into consideration and don't just assume surgery will magically change all your bad habits with food. People figure out ways to eat around these surgeries. Otherwise we wouldn't have a 42% rate of regain. As long as you completely understand that, you'll be fine. Okay. I am aware of what the surgery does, as I have been planning this surgery for a year. I will do what is right for me. I am willing to change and I want to change.... but I mean, you can't just stop wanting something because the doctor says so. If you were addicted to drugs and were told to just stop, could you? No.... it takes time, it takes support and I'm aware of this... but your "sighing" and pretty much telling me that since I cheated and ate chicken fingers and fries for dinner one night that I am not mentally capable of having a surgery is not why I am here. I am here for support. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App You indicated in your original post that you were scared that you weren't going to be able to handle post-op and food controlled your life. @@Babbs was explaining (politely) why it is important to get control before surgery as the mental aspects will not be resolved by surgery. If you came for support - you really should listen to what the successful posters have to say - not just look for validation that what you did is no big deal because others cheat as well. If you have been researching this surgery - I assume you've seen the difficulties many have post-op because food still controls them. "Cheating" on post-op could cause sign and life threatening complications. If your pre-op diet was low carb, high protein - even if you were starving - why didn't you just eat what was allowed on your diet. If it was simply hunger - yogurt would have sufficed. People are only trying to help you by being honest. This process is alot more mental than physical.

    Costs resulting from WLS

$2300 certainly isn't pocket change for most of us, but it's still considerably less than what most of us paid for surgery, so it might help to view it from that angle. Going forward the expenses might not be as expensive as you'd think. Regardless of whether you're eating broth, a Protein shake, or your typical meal, you'll still have to buy food. You'll be consuming much less of it than previously, especially in the first couple of months. If you have other members of the household you could use some of the things you buy for recipes for them as well, so the expenses won't just be for yourself. The blog site "The World According to Eggface" has several really good recipes that use Protein powder for lower carb muffins and treats others could enjoy. I've definitely spent less on groceries and eating out than before. After my first month I really wasn't buying any food just for myself that my husband couldn't also enjoy. I use Fairlife milk because it has more protein in it. I took keep protein powder in the pantry, but most days I make smoothies using a high protein, low carb yogurt, frozen fruit, and frozen kale (the taste is masked by the fruit). My portion sizes have definitely changed. When I eat out I always need a box for left overs, and one meal can be made into three now. As for clothing, if you have a reasonably priced seamstress nearby she might be able to take in the business clothes you already have and like. That's what I've done. For more casual wear I still wear jeans that are a bigger size, just with a belt. I have splurged on a few jeans in my current size, but if I'm just running to Home Depot I'll put on an old baggy pair, cinch in the waist, and throw on a longer top. Before I had the VSG, I still had to buy new clothes a few times a year, but often because I'd gone up a size. It's much less disheartening when the reason for new clothes is because you've lost weight rather than because you've gained it. Best wishes with everything!
  9. I got lazy and ordered wonton soup broth, and egg drop soup. And added Protein powder (flavor less) and strained out lumps. The broth thinned out the egg drop a little and it still had protein. It tasted heavenly. Home made bone broth helped me with healing. Don't go over board friends. Inside of one week you'll be moving on to the next phase. So don't over buy, you'll get board. My staple now is Oikos triple zero yogurt. My surgery was 6/30. Purée was great and I wouldn't worry too much about sodium. Your flushing electrolytes with the Water and Fluid intake. Your eating so little so enjoy what little you do eat. No point in deprivation. I ate purée of meats I cooked for my family. It was thinned with broth, but flavor was good. Baby steps, swallow, swallow, swallow! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. I am almost 3 weeks out and it gets better every day. I was very nauseous in the hospital and threw up a lot of old blood from the surgery. In fact I was nauseous the first day home. Then it evened out. I followed only soft Protein such as yogurt, cottage cheese and clear Soups for meals and sips of Water every five minutes. In between meals I drank about 1/3 of the premier Protein shakes. The only thing I think stopped my recovery was that I tried not to take the pain meds I was prescribed. I was miserable. So on the third day home I started taking one during the day and one about an hour before bed. Life was much easier after that. I also took Miralax daily to stay regular. I have been off the pain meds for four days now and it is getting better every day. I have lost 34 lbs altogether in one month. I feel like I made the best decision of my life! 11. I am almost 3 weeks post op and I am in phase 2 where I eat some amounts of tuna fish and a couple crackers or chicken ( make sure it is very moist). I have only problems trying to eat vegetables that are not cooked for along time and almost mush. In phase one I could only eat soft Protein like yogurt and cottage cheese and Soups. I couldn't tolerate any noodles or Pasta. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. I'm almost 8 weeks out. I noticed the morning after surgery that my tastes had changed. The nurse gave me my favorite yogurt- I couldn't eat it cause it tasted like super sweet chemicals. Yuck. I didn't really have any gas pain after surgery. A little sore abdomen (like worked out too hard) but not really uncomfortable. In the first 2 weeks post op lost #14. But I seem to lose from the extremities first- my face lost it, then my rings are too loose (down a full ring size in 2 weeks?!?) and my shoes are loose. Now aT almost 8 weeks- I'm down 26# since surgery. I don't crave most of the stuff I did before - although I do enjoy a very small slice of thin crust pepperoni pizza now & then (ok by dr & nut). How much do eat.

Everyone's program is different. ON day 1 after surgery, I was on water and ice chips (30 mls water every hour). On day 2 after surgery, i was on 4oz of high protein shake or low-sodium strained cream soup three times a day, and 64 ounces of clear liquids. From day 3-day 14 (so now), I am allowed four 8 ounce high protein shake (less than 150 calories per 8 ounces), 32 ounces of clear fluids. Sugarfree popsicles count as clear fluid, but no jello post-surgery. I can substitute one of the protein shakes with strained low-fat healthy request cream soup or a light greek yogurt (Dannon light and fit Greek is what's recommended). Premier protein shakes are discouraged as they are made from whey protein concentrate (instead of isolate) and have oil, cellulose gums and gel, and carrageenan in them. After 2 weeks i will have a follow up visit with my surgeon and nut, and they will determine whether I advance to the pureed stage or stay on liquids for another week. I was on the liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-surgery, so it's getting pretty old. Yup, 19 days with no solid food so far, only 11 to go!
  14. Well I guess I'll respond first! LOL. The link was very helpful in regards to many of our concerns about discussing weight with our kids. It can be a very slippery slope and as parents or caregivers we have to take caution when having these conversations because our kids are very sensitive to what we say and it may stay with them for the rest of their lives so we need to have positive words and not negative. I myself have been guilty of negative words like "oh you're shaped like your dad" or "I didn't see (insert childs weight here) lbs until I was 7 months pregnant with your brother!" These words only lead to additional feelings of unworthiness and unnacceptance and does not help the child at all! The link provided some very common dillemas amongst parents and children including situations and scenarios when talking to your kids about weight can turn into a positive and impactful moment. It's a touchy subject and those of us who are dealing with an overweight child be it your own, or family member, neighbor etc. and I'm constantly in pursuit of how to tackle this issue daily! My daughter now 12 is in the 90th percentile for height and weight. I've become desperate to get her weight under control and looked into camps I could send her away to, or even signing her up for weight watchers. Both I felt although the intentions were innocent, the outcomes could be damaging and set her up for a lifetime of failure. But how do I get her to listen to me without her feeling that I'm putting her down about her weight? it's a thin line. I've learned that leading by example is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children. Since my WLS I have been eating healthier meals and Snacks, decreased portion sizes, Zero sweetened beverages, fast food etc. As a result I cook more-- and decided if I won't eat it why give it to my kids? I've encouraged my daughter to go to the gym with me-- she loves it and it makes her feel more grown up. Something her friends aren't even doing! She plays softball (she's darn good at it too) playing up a level with an older age group and more than keeping up. She made her Jr high school girls basketball team so she's been engaging in 2 hours of practice after school 5 days a week. Softball practice one day a week and games on Sunday. We meal plan throughout the week, get up early or go after softball practice and do our shopping and on Sundays we meal prep. She takes her lunch every day todays lunch included a salad topped with cucumbers, strawberries, turkey breast, boiled egg and light raspberry vinaigrette. Sides include 6 Strawberries, Greek Yogurt, Colby jack cheese stick and a Zero calorie Steaz tea. I allow and encourage her to pack 1 sweet treat last week were 9 pumpkin spice yogurt pretzels. This week will be Pepperidge farm Milano Cookies (2) 120 cal. I am trying to encourage moderation not deprivation. So far-- it's working well. Since school has begun 9/6 she has lost close to 10lbs. She's blown away by how fast she's losing and I tell her it's all her hard work and of course her youth! Its also reinforcement to continue the healthy behavior. I have her weigh weekly to maintain accountability for her choices and make tweaks in her plan as needed. She has a short term goal that she is very close to and a long term goal that we hope to achieve by the end of the school year. Reminding her that 1-2 lbs a week is normal and that stalls will happen along the way. She is rewarded with things that matter to her. A new shirt, nail polish, sleepover with a friend. the most important thing is we're doing it together-- and she's guiding the ship. I asked her do you ever feel like I put you on a diet. She said yes! but then she took it back saying " well-- not really we've made a lot of changes though. No McDonalds or wendys everyday or ever now! But it's ok I don't get headaches as much as I used to and I like making the food that I eat. I feel like I used to eat without even thinking about it and now I understand more about serving sizes, calories, sugars and Protein. I understand how easy it is to eat way too much without even realizing it! and now I know better."-- out of the mouths of babes. I'm on a mission for my health and I couldn't imagine leaving her behind.
  15. I was sleeved on 7.19.16 i lost 20 lbs prior to surgery. I started eating smaller portions 5x a day. Each meal was 15 carbs our less carb master yogurt, premier shakes 1-2x a day. And a shake is a meal. It really helps with the liquid diet prior to surgery. My starting weight was 283 at surgery day it was 263 and current weight is 235 Good luck! September Sleevers!

Hi everyone! I was sleeved on 9/8. Doing liquids still but really have no issues with Protein or fluids. Been having the Orgain Organic Protein shakes from Whole Foods, 25 grams each and Isopure liquid Protein in between. I also use Bariwise Protein mix which you add to Water. Those are 15 grams for 70 calories and taste great, come in many flavors. They help with both your Fluid intake and your Proteins. I also do the cream Soups but put them through the strainer and of course chicken broth. There is also a liquid Dannon Greek Yogurt that has 10 grams of protein that comes in a few flavors. It has no pieces and no added sugar. It's really not bad. Hope this helps. I am down 19 lbs but that includes weight lost during the week of Pre-Op liquids. Protein ISSUES

Had the same issues. I'm 8 weeks out and gagged on every shake I tried. I'm back to Premier chocolate ones because they are tolerable but I have to force it down. BUT that's 30g of Protein in one shot! I also use the Syntex nectar in flavored Water (I love the Raspberry Lemonade Great Value flavor) so that adds another 10g of protein. Another thing that has saved me is eating a lot of Greek Yogurt. Each one is about 11-12g of protein. I learned the hard way though that not getting your protein in will cause your weight loss to STALL. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Travel

This is more of a vent, but if anyone has sugfestions i would appreciate. I am 14 weeks post open and travel often for work. When at home usually cook make my Breakfast and lunch. And tend to have dinner out a few nights a week since my crossfit session is out too late to make dinner. I have not really had to make any major special requests (just minor stuff burflger or chicken without bun, veg instead of starch) when eating out. Nearly all restaurants allow me to order a child's Protein and salad instead of fries. Unfortunately on my current business trip it has been a bit of a challenge. I am in Guam and the hotel menu's are quite starch heavy or fried. Every time I go to order food I have to talk to the chef and we analyze each menu item and come to the conclusion that nothing fits my needs. They ask what I want and I explain to them the things I usually eat, they think about it and suggest, "can you eat chicken?" I usually agree to chicken and it is usually dry. My local colleague is getting frustrated with my special requests. At home I eat eggs but have not been able to keep them down here I am out of ideas. I asked tonight if they have cottage cheese or Greek yogurt and they do not. I spend so much time talking about what to eat that I don't have enough time to eat it. So far the chicken has been dry and the burger patties and steak are tough. They have two salads on their menu - a kale salad with chicken and a chef salad. I don't do cold cuts due to sodium so the chef salad does not work. I walked six miles this morning looking for a grocery store and could not find one. Ithink has never been such a struggle to find something to eat. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App
  21. Hi all. I'm 3 years in with the lapband. I've lost about 70 pounds. I wasted about 1.5 years during the process as Kaiser suddenly stopped letting me see the surgeon for any more follow-ups (Kaiser approved my lapband surgery and follow-on visits for about a year but once they got a bariatric Dr, they no longer allowed me to see my original surgeon outside Kaiser). The Kaiser Dr was never there and I always saw a physician assistant who was terrible in doing fills. Anyway, after months of no progress losing, I got fed up and decided to go back to the original surgeon and self-pay and, since then, I'm back in losing mode. I went for a fill in July but felt as though I couldn't swallow saliva and with a plane trip and vacation in the next few days, I sort of went into panic mode that something bad would happen while I was on the trip. So, I went back to the Dr the day after the fill to have a slight unfill. The Dr thought that had I not had a trip coming up, things might settle down in a day or two but seeing as I was going on a trip, he did remove a bit and told me to come back when I returned if I felt I needed more added. That's exactly what I did. So, two months later now and I feel as though I could use a slight fill. So, last Friday I went in and got some fluid added. I weighed exactly the same as I had two months prior. No loss, no gain. Since Friday, I'm getting some fluids down and was able to eat some yogurt yesterday. On occasion this past weekend, I have had to to bring up some fluid (nice way of saying I made myself vomit) because it felt like it was sitting in the pouch and not going down. Saturday I only did fluids, to include water, protein shake, tomato soup. Sunday I added yogurt. I hesitate to run back to get an unfill. But something has started happening that ever hasn't happened before. I go to sleep just fine but find myself waking up a few times a night sort of doing like a belch or something where I can taste something acidic. I go to bed feeling as though nothing is stuck yet it seems overnight, something is going on. Could my own saliva be collecting in the pouch? I have not ever had issues with this band other than trying to get to the right fill level. No issues at all. No heartburn or anything else. Just this nighttime thing is making me concerned. Hopefully, it dies down in the next several days. I want to stick this out and not run back where surely too much would be removed and I'd be in the same boat again. I know this is a rambling post so sorry about that. But, does this weird night thing happen to any of you while you're sleeping? The first night, I did get up and made myself bring it up and it was the tomato soup I'd had earlier that I thought had gone down just fine. It didn't happen Saturday night but last night, same thing happened. I woke myself up with a sort of belch type of thing and had an acidic taste in my mouth. I made myself vomit but there wasn't much of anything that came up. I've just never had an issue while sleeping. Do any of you know what I'm talking about?

    Salmon spread

I have the smoker going with a pork loin at the moment. After that is my sweeties salmon. After my hack job massacre of filleting it. There was enough clean up on the carcass to make a salmon spread. I cooked the salmon in lemon and let it cool. Later I adied dill relish, Greek yogurt and old bay seasoning. I took some and put it on cheddar cheese. Pretty darn tasty!
  23. Hi everyone. Newbie to this site. This Tuesday will mark the two week mark from the date of my gastric sleeve operation. Last night I ate Soup and a yogurt drink (I was on Clear liquids for 48 hours and then on full liquids until week 4). I think I "drank" my dinner too fast and maybe "ate" too much because I was in so much pain afterwards! Today I have been slowing everything down, evaluating with each sip if I am full or not. Like most people, I am not used to taking my time while eating. This is a whole new world. I had tomato soup and then a cup of Morrocan mint tea for lunch and had no problems at all. Has anyone else made any "newbie" mistakes- eating too fast, trying a food you couldn't handle too soon even if your doctor okayed it? Last night was rough. Mostly I am annoyed because it was Saturday night and I like to watch movies with my husband and son during this time, but instead I was in the bedroom and in and out of the bathroom, having....issues. Ugh.

Take a look at Elli Quark instead yogurt or Greek yogurt. It has fewer calories (80) and higher protein (14g). It is available online and Hy-Vee stores in my area. It is available in 12 flavors. Sent from my SM-P900 using the BariatricPal App

band to bypass in 10 days!

Hi Taurus, Did you have problems with your band? I had my RNY on July 2, 2013. I can say this it WORKS!! If you follow all of your Suregon's guidelines and do what he or she requires you WILL lose your weight!! Here are my Stats: HW 249 SW 232 CW 125#'s!! I actually lost below my goal weight by 8#'s. I weighed in at 117#'s my Suregon and my PCP were getting worried but I gained the 8#'s and it is amazing how much better I have felt!! Part of my problem was I had Strictures ( kind of like scar tissue) I ended up needing 5 Endoscopes with 4 Dialations. With the last one being on Jan 2015. This surgery is so AMAZING!! I was on Protein drinks for 2 weeks preop and 4 weeks post op. I started out eating super soft foods : yogurt, cottage cheese, SF Jello and Protien drinks to supplement. I still use Protein Drinks to get in all of my protein. This your main focus to get in 60 to 80 grams of protien a day. You Dr might have a different # on your protein. I have a problem with some foods like eggs steak pork but I can eat Chili Beans ( actually any kind of beans) cheese, yogurt etc. Be sure to walk as much as you can after surgery and sip sip and sip some more. Your new pouch won't be able to take to much in at a time so you have to work it for sure. It doesn't take long to get dehydrated due to our small tummy!! Our WLS is a tool as I'm sure you are aware of. I still don't have true hunger. Now mind hunger I have to fight all the time. The WLS fixes your body but not your mind. Good Luck and I look forward to following your new journey!!
