Who was discouraged and isn't anymore?
Madeline's mom replied to Alexandra's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I can honestly say I am very pleased with my band. I know there is no way in hell I could have lost 36 pounds in less than 3 months. The only thing I have problems with is when I hit a plateu( I am on my second) I fear that I will never get below that weight. So yesterday I did a search on pleateus and found this cool pleateu busting diet and am going so if it works! -
Who was discouraged and isn't anymore?
burnsun replied to Alexandra's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I really was discouraged at the beginning!!! My mother in law and I were banded at the same time. SHe did absoulutely nothing and the weight was falling off- I did the pre op diet for 14 days (little loss) I lost only 20 lbs from surgery till first fill she was loosing tons- but to top it all off she never exercised, ate everything you shouldn't had two to three glasses of wine a day and still drinks juice a lot after banding. Ice cream and popcorn every nighjt and more salad dressing than I can count (almost 4 table spoons) I cried and cried- ash she was down thirty five an I was closer to 20- well somewhere around novemebr last year I was steadily loosing- she stopped. Now if she looses 3 pounds a month - it is great but usually 2. I still am close to 8. I know you are not supposed to compare- but we live in the same house- so we are horrible. I wa sso afraid I wasted our money and Eric would be mad if it didn't work and it was just more wasted time and money- and so depressed (I think I need more light in the winter!) Well now it is just the opposite as my centure mary is looming ever closer (ok not till the oms thing comes and goes this week)- I keep thinking of the slow and steady turtle- I will get there- eventually- I have a lot of hangin empty skin and mor muscle in my legs and arms than ever- I can run and walk without getting winded and I love to cook and don't feel bad when I do! I can acutally eat part of apice of cheese cake no the whole thing and I am enjoying clothes shopping!. All kind of other things are better and lots of things haven't changed. My kids still think I am the world and the sun shines out of my &&&&, DH is still the greatest and we still fight about the car and money- but making up is a lot more fun, and I do love it when he compliments an outfit! -
I am so ready for this. Then I went to a psychic yesterday and he said that I would hate it and want to have it removed. And, that I really didn't need it because if I could really see who I was and honor myself, I would eat healthier and the weight would fall off because I would eat food that honored me. I get what he was saying but... After little sleep and much soul searching, I am still going get the lapband. That's why my log in is "18 months to know." Someone gave me some really good advice: She said, you have about a year and a half to figure out why you eat the way you do, if not, you may very well put the weight back on. So, I figure that I can truly find out who I am AND lose the weight at the same time. Maybe I will hate it and maybe I will have it removed, but I need to take this journey this way right now. God promises us not to give us any more than we can handle. I believe lapband is God's way of saying, your weight loss IS more than you can handle, so here's some help. Pray for me, I will pray for all of you. I trust I am in God's hands and His will be done. Any thoughts?

Gaining Weight on Pre-Op Diet WTH?!?!
gotmyeyeontheprize posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so I am on day 10 of the liquid pre-op diet. I had lost 15 lbs. as of yesterday. Today, when I weighed, I had gained a pound!! How in the world could this happen?!?!?! I have been eating (drinking) the same things through this entire pre-op diet. If anything, I have started eating less as the days go on. I have gotten tired of my limited choices. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be going on? I am being banded on Monday!! -

[Can you designate a cabinet or area for the other people in the house to keep their things that you'd rather not see? You could even go as far as to put a lock & key on it and give them a key and not keep a copy for yourself. Make yourself very small and attainable goals. Even as little as .5lb a week.. and when you reach that goal, give yourself a non-food reward. Manicure, pedicure, special book, bubblebath? As you get stronger, gradually increase your goals. These are some REALLY good ideas!!! I think I may do that as well. I have very active children and a husband with a metabolism worth killing him over, so they can eat the things that I can just look at and gain. Thanks for great ideas!!! -

The bariatric practice I use stresses that there are no "bad foods", there are poor, better and good choices. If you've made a few less than stellar food choices.. oh well. It's not the end of the world. You can get back on the weight loss wagon tonight. You don't have to wait till tomorrow. If you live alone, get rid of the temptations.. down the disposal or into the trash. If you have to share your space with non bandsters.. it's a little harder, but still doable. Jen, Congratulations on your marriage! I would recommend calling your insurance carrier and ask, "Does my company have an exclusion on any weight loss surgical procedure?" If there is an exclusion, the insurance will not pay, appeals do not apply either, they simply will not pay. Calling will take approximately 10 min and you will not need to wait for an answer. My husband and I took out a line of credit and paid for my surgery, $13,500 all inclusive including one year fills.

Your rate of weight loss will slow at times, and even reach "plateaus" occasionally, where you can remain compliant with your diet and not see the scale move for a week or more. As long as you remain compliant with your surgeon's instructions, and continue with your exercise, the weight will come off. As I've often mentioned, this journey has taught me a life skill which eluded me for years, patience. Try to remember that you did not gain your weight in a short span of time, so it is not realistic to expect that you will loose it rapidly. Best wishes...

Why did you choose RNY instead of sleeve?
Baconville replied to rocknrollmama1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeve was also a possibility for me. I didn't like the idea of having to purchase expensive special Vitamins. I also liked the fact that RNY had been around and tested for many decades. Finally my surgeon would have done the sleeve as an open procedure, and I really wanted laproscopic. I know it is more successful with big weight loss, and I know that patients don't seem to gain as much weight back, but I am hoping that I can make my pouch work for me. I wake up, "Oh! its an awesome beautiful day! I have a great band and i'm losing weight and I'm exercising and in love with the world." Eat great all day, take care of new baby...husband works third, leaves at 9:30, baby is asleep for the night by 10. I think, "Now I can relax, piss around on the internet, wind down." And then I fall into this thing where at least 3 days out of the week I will go binging. And of course, it leads to nothing but puking and feeling like crap and finally falling asleep disappointed in myself...etc. It seems so simple, I know I shouldn't, I know I'm tired after being up with the baby all day, I know i'm bored and probably should go to sleep, an I know this behavior is wrong and could lead to trouble if not rectified. BUT KNOWING ISN'T DOING! So, if anyone has some tips on what they do to wind down, rather than falling into old habits late at night, please share.:ranger:

That is so weird. I was told not to lose any weight and maintain my weight until I was approved.

I have called my insurance company and was told they do cover the lap band surgery and that I do qualify as far as weight ( BMI 38 ). I have my appointment for the seminar at the bariatric clinic and will be getting my referral from my PCP on the 25th. They did mention somthing about requiring that I have tried a 4 month weight loss program through my physician but would look at my last years history with him and possibly accept teh weight loss I have already had being monitored by my Dr. Ayway, I am excited to get things going and have realy learned a lot from all of you out there. Looking forward to chatting with you all and looking for support. Thanks

Why would my restriction just go???
juliegeraci replied to angiepUK's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes, this is quite common when you lose weight. It is normal to have to go back in for fills. Sometimes it only takes 5-10 lbs before you need another fill. -

Have you lost a lot of weight? I read somewhere that as you lose weight you may need another fill to compensate. Just a thought. -
Hi, I'm Rj and i am not who I used to be!
McButterpants replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Beautifully written, RJ. I always enjoy your posts. This is a great topic and I can't wait to read the responses! Though I am still new to this journey (sleeved just over 5 weeks ago), I can already see changes...some good, some bad. I have discovered I am not a patient person - sometimes I don't want to take 20-30 minutes to eat a meal and I am not losing weight as fast as I want to or as fast as I perceive other people are losing (comparing yourself to others is bad, I know). I discovered my husband has a lot more compassion than I gave credit. He has been my rock during the past 6 weeks. I have discovered that with every pound I lose, I become more accountable - more accountable for time I spend sitting on my ass not doing anything. There is a bigger expectation for me to participate in my own life - I wanted this, but now it's a reality. I discovered I wasn't truly prepared for the post-op journey - I really thought my biggest obstacle would be to get myself to the gym to work out. I was not prepared for the emotional toll this journey has already taken. I discovered that a 40 pound weight loss doesn't necessarily mean people will notice (no one has..someone commented on my hair this weekend, I think they are noticing something changed about me, but cannot pinpoint it). I discovered that I have underlying issues with food that I haven't addressed ever in my adult life and I need to address them now. I have discovered I am still the same person when I wake up in the morning. My attitudes, thoughts and feelings are the same - I think I thought it would be all sunshine and lollipops after I had the surgery and started to lose weight. I discovered I am still fearful when I pull on my jeans that 6 weeks ago were really tight and I had to lay down on the bed to get them zipped up. I still have that fear that I won't be able to get them on, even though the last time I wore them they practically fell off my body. -
UPDATE..Hit goal in Jan and then....

Welcome back! Congratulations of your upcoming bundle of joy. At least this time you have the tools to not only have a healthier pregnancy but the plan to lose the baby weight. Take care of yourself and the little one! -
So I decided weeks ago that 5/1 would be my quit date from tobacco! I completely forgot that one side effect of quitting tobacco is weight gain. So far today, I have been craving food!!! I’m only 2 weeks post op the Orbera. Do you think I’m setting myself up for failure? Maybe I should postpone my quit date do I do not have cravings...any thoughts, comments, or questions are appreciated! FYI...I use snuff.

Has Anyone Re- Gained After 10 Years, So Many People Have Said This Will Happen
clk replied to Trici's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nobody has been tracking the results of the sleeve as a WLS that long yet. Give it a bit more time. I'm not certain but when I was researching I think someone posted a five year study - you might do some searching and see if you can find anything on VST about it. Regain is possible with any surgery. The big benefit the sleeve has over bypass (what most people are probably thinking of when they talk about regain) is that there isn't a honeymoon phase or window where loss is easiest. Once you're sleeved and healed, your capacity only increases a small amount. Unlike a short window where malabsoption is guaranteed, or a pouch that is likely to stretch (or a band that requires fills and unfills, for that matter), your sleeve is going to restrict you immediately after surgery and for the rest of your life. I am two years out and maintaining beautifully. I'm currently pregnant and while I have hormone bloat and the start of a rounded tummy, I'm not having a problem with weight gain (nothing more than I'd expect at this point) despite the fact that my capacity is increased now that I'm pregnant. All surgeries come with the risk of regain. Using the sleeve like a diet that will someday end is the biggest cause of regain I've seen - people just stop being diligent at goal and fall into denial about bad habits, ones they didn't fix while losing in the first place. That said, I have seen very few regain posts in the three years I've been here. I've seen plenty of "I got out of control over the holidays and gained a few but took it off quickly" posts, though. If you weigh daily in maintenance and actually learn how to eat like a healthy, normal person during the first few months post surgery, there is no reason you can't reach goal and maintain for life. ~Cheri -
Has Anyone Re- Gained After 10 Years, So Many People Have Said This Will Happen
kczar replied to Trici's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you check the post-op section of the board, there's a stickied thread asking members how much weight (if any) they have regained since reaching goal. There's a lot of great responses there. From what I remember, those that did say they had regained, it was in the 5-10 pound range. I'd encourage you to read through all the posts there. It really helped me feel more confident in my chances for long term success. -
My weight at my annual PCP appointment last week put me at 40 BMI, but it normally hovers closer to 38-39.5. I am making the appointment to see the surgeon but didn't know if that weight would be the determining weight or one at the PCP?
-
You won't typically feel any restriction or fee "full" while you are on liquids. You should be drinking as much as you can at this point. Try to get plenty of protein, if you can get 100g or more great. The only exception to this is if protein consumption interferes with hydration. You should be getting at least 64oz/day. I like to use my body weight as a guide for liquid consumption. Example: I currently weigh 217lbs. So I divide 217 in half = 108.5. So my target today is 108oz.

Surgery Date Set and I'm excited and terrified.
losingtheselumps replied to fancypants67's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@fancypants67 In January of 2015, I went for my first consultation for WLS. I had signed up and said I was gonna go through with it. Then, I backed out because I thought "I can do this on my own." I wasn't ready to give in.... Fast forward to December of 2015 and I hadn't lost one pound, hell I probably gained 5 pounds... I decided enough was enough, found a new doctor that I LOVE, and made the commitment this January. I was just sleeved 8 days ago and I'm so happy that I did. I really regret NOT going through with it back in 2015 because I could have been at my goal by now! I just wasn't ready. It's normal to feel that way, but you aren't quitting. You are admitting that you need help. This tool will help you get where you need to be to be healthy. Believe me, you aren't "throwing in the towel", because you still have to work at it. You still have to put effort into your weight loss, you will just have a tool to help you get it done a little easier:) -
Yep, you are doing fine. You will have starts and stops, but the inches continue to drop away even when the pounds are not. Your body needs adjustment times in between chunks of weight loss. Relax, and weigh once a week when you are in a stall, so you don't get stressed.

I've struggled with my weight since I was age four and I decided when I got banded that I am NEVER having mine removed. I know how hard it was to stay in control without it, and I would never risk that again.

I have been in contact with a gentleman that works with Drs. in TJ and will be setting things up as soon as the freight slows down. That may be awhile, but yeah I didn't gain all this weight over night and planning is the key here. We (my husband and I) we considering going to Monterrey, but the logistics weren't right for us. Has anyone else been to Drs. in TJ? I hope I don't have to quit smoking. I know it irritates the stomach, but what else can a person do driving down the road and you've run out of music to listen to. Will cross that bridge if/when need be. Take care and be safe.
