  1. Im 4 years post op this month and have been pretty much at this weight (+/- a few pounds) since i got into maintenance 3+ years ago. (I was 118.3 lbs this morning) I actually used to eat over 2500+ cals regularly in years 2-3 post-op but that was because I exercised a heck of alot more during that period than I do now. Im 5’2”. In your decision to decide if u want to lower calories to lose more weight, i suggest you figure out what u are willing to do to achieve that. Do you want to eat less? You mentioned you are happy at 1800 cals a day. Will you be even happier at a lower weight, but have to offset that with less cals? Will you still be able to be at peace with your life and lifestyle to achieve (and maintain) a lower body weight? If the answer is yes, then go for it! Lower your cals, increase your exercise and get to where you want to be. However, if the answer is no and you see yourself suffering angst that takes away from peaceful content living, then I say it ain’t worth it in the long run. But thats just me. Good Luck! ❤️

    Just starting my journey!

    I had to do 6 visits of medically managed weight loss which took 5 months after my initial consultation so my first appt to surgery was just about 6 months. Not everyone is required to do that though and some require only 3 months.
  3. Hi all, my husband had gastric bypass September 14th. So 2 and a half weeks post-op. He is not following the eating guidelines. He did well with the 2 week post op liquid diet. But I woke up this morning to him making 2 pieces of bacon and 2 scrambled eggs. He's completely skipped the puree and soft food stage. We had the post op surgeon appointment and a nutritionist appointment where I feel like they gave him the green light to move to soft foods, but I think he's going way beyond what they intended for him to be eating. I'm at the point where I can't nag him into eating the way he's supposed to be and find myself getting angry that he isn't following 'the rules ' of eating. Not sure what to do, holding my tongue is driving me crazy and I don't want to see him fail. 😢. But I also know if I nag him he will just get mad and do what he wants anyway. I'm thinking of emailing the nutritionist, maybe she can do something.

    September surgery buddies!!

    I actually use both because I like different features on them. I do think the baritastic app is easier to use and easy to track what I want to track, but I have had issues with it being way off on its information. Like I had it say a can of chicken in water was 56 grams of fat when it was like 2.5. It did get fixed about 2 weeks after I saw it but my dietitian said I was eating too much fat before surgery and I actually wasn't, it was the app being wrong and I hadn't caught it. So now I double check the stats and I also use the myfitness app as a backup to see how the 2 sites compare. So far in the 2 weeks, only 1 day was way off and that day the baritastic app said I ate 200 more calories then the fitness one. The thing I don't really like about the my fitness is that it kind of yells at me every day for not eating enough calories.

    Slowing down?

    pretty much, my weight loss slowed at the at the 6 month mark then at the 10 month mark I dropped 2 kg then it stopped. my lowest weight was 1 week off my 1 year mark but I have since put on 2 kg
  6. I was sleeved 12/22/2021. Since starting weight I've only lost 45 lbs. I haven't lost weight in 3 months. I get about 800-1000 calories per day, go to the gym and walk every day. I will say even though I haven't lost weight in 3 months, I feel my clothes are fitting better and I'm buying smaller sizes. I'm a little frustrated as well. I really don't know what the answer is. I just keep doing what I'm supposed to do and hope evidentially I will start loosing again. Good luck to you.

    Slowing down?

    I visit my dietician every 2 months, and this visit I lost 14lbs. In this 2-month period I had a very annoying 26-day stall. My team are always overjoyed with my progress, so I am ok with it too. I am eating 800 - 1000 cals a day. Everybody loses weight at a different rate but if we keep to a calorie deficit, then eventually we will all end where we want to. See what this month brings regarding weight loss and if you are still seeing poor results then get back to your team and get them earning their keep

I had VSG on 1/18/2022 SW 281 LW 219 CW 224 I am feeling so defeated, I feel like by now I should have lost more… I eat right, workout 3-4 days a week, I work full time as an RN in a busy emergency department 3-4 nights a week so my job is pretty active as well… I’m just pretty lost on why I’m such a slow loser. I haven’t lost anything since May, actually gained 5 lbs. I have met with my doctor and they referred me to a nutritionist which said to track everything and told me food wise I’m doing what I need to be doing and really didn’t offer much more advice. I do have PCOS and that’s always been a struggle with my weight but I have seen so many have success with PCOS post op as well. Has anyone hit a wall like this and has been able to get over it without having additional surgeries like bypass? Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Slowing down?

    So this month's rate of loss has significantly slowed down and I'm not sure that's due to a stall or normal. For August my loss was around 12 lbs and this month it's just 4.4. I have just entered my 6th month since surgery. I'm now yo-yoing within 2 to 4 lbs overall. Is this normal? The amount of calories I take in have increased a slight bit from around 760 to appox. 800-810. Wouldn't I still be losing weight at this point?

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

    I agree with the others. The best advice that my sister (who had her surgery three weeks before mine) gave me was to chew, chew and chew some more. Take your time and stop eating if it starts to hurt. You will learn your limits as you go. I found that black pepper was the culprit in my case and I stopped adding it to my food until 3 months after the surgery. Chicken, meat and eggs were particularly difficult for me. Yogurt (low fat) was my go to food. Also try to avoid drinking water for at least half an hour after you eat. It will be difficult at first but it will get better. Hang in there!

    How do I know when I'm done?

    I think they would. I have to keep my protein high because of the protein absorption issue - hence the dietary change to counter the increase in calories from the increased protein. I hate protein shakes & I can taste even the flavourless protein powders making going back to a low calorie diet using shakes challenging. Plus the med is hormonal & my weight gain was always strongly linked to my hormones. I actually did reduce my calories initially to try to lose the kgs but it didn’t do anything. Sounds like what happened most of my life - ha! When I see my GP in a couple of weeks, I’m going to see if I can go back to a lower dose HRT & see if that helps. I’m actually experiencing more hot flushes & acne - boo - on the higher dose. Of course the gain could just have been my body settling again. It is only 2kg & I’ve been stable at this weight for 9 months.

    How do I know when I'm done?

    I thought my body had settled at a weight …then I proceeded to lose another 5lbs this summer. I’m 16 months p.o. At the upper end of a healthy BMI. At the lowest weight I have ever been as an adult. With my surgeon, I had actually said I’d be happy to get to 180. As of last Monday, I was 163.6. I’m not doing anything special. To me I’m at maintenance. I have my calorie goal around 1400. But really I just focus on the protein number. I don’t restrict what I eat, but do try and make better choices. I am getting a Tummy Tuck in a few weeks. Excited for that.

    I haven't tried immodium yet. Thank you! I had my gallbladder removed years ago, so that might be part of my issue as well. I'll talk to.my surgeon this week!

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

    You probably just need to wait a bit longer before progressing to soft foods. Different surgeons have different post-op diets; mine didn't start soft foods until week 3 (scrambled eggs and ricotta bake are soft foods, not purees). Can you eat pureed foods like yogurt, pudding, refried beans (when I was in the pureed stage, I was told to puree even refried beans in a food processor until completely smooth)?

    Unable to vomit

    I know I really would appreaciate that possibility, not just because of the possible tricky situations related to having had gastric bypass. I have had some stomach flu's and food poisoning's that really don't get better unless you get to empty the system. I'm just glad I have no plans for more kids. Nevermind my first pregnancy which was not pleasant with a long period of hyperemesis, the nausea and vomiting continuing up to 16 weeks. The next pregnancy, twins, was more than double the nausea and vomiting with having to wake up 1,5 hours before I needed to get up to work to take my morning meds, as as soon as I stood up, I would vomit, and if I ate anything, I would vomit too... The feeling I had, if not eased just a little by vomiting, would have made me completely unable to function. The problem was I was an over achiever, fresh out of Uni and was determined to work. However I could not eat anything during the day, because otherwise I vomited. Luckily I worked in a hospital, so after my shift I would ask an anesthesiologist to hook me up with iv liquids, haha.     @Arabesque please may I ask you another question? If you went back to eating 800 calories a day for a few weeks and lost those 2 kilos (not that you want to or need to!) is it your instinct that they would just bounce back on?

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

    My guess is you're progressing a bit too fast and/or eating too much. You might try something simpler like a TBS of yogurt and see how you do, Scrambled eggs are notoriously difficult for people at first and the Ricotta Bake might also be a bit much for only 9 days post surgery. For comparison, some plans have you on full liquids for 2 weeks post surgery.

    Unable to vomit

    I had the foamies in the first few months. Once and a lifetime now if I don't chew enough. I bought a GUM dual action tongue cleaner and when I feel like I have to get rid of the extra saliva/foam (chest pressure build up), I rub it 2 or 3 times towards the back of my tongue, promotes a gag reflex, and the fluid expels. It never makes me throw up, it is always just the extra mucus that causes build up pain. I forget where I read that hint but it had helped me.
  22. My goal weights were rather simple: no longer morbidlly obese class 3, no longer obese class 2, no longer obese class 1, no longer overweight and healthy bmi. I've been kind of in maintenance mode the past few months. Still upping my calories but still losing. Tryng to find that sweet spot that is both sustainable and comfortable for my lifestyle.

    Just starting my journey!

    Start a list of questions and take them with you because the appointments seem to go so fast. My first question would be whether you have to do the 3 or 6 months of medically managed weight loss attempt (to prove to insurance you can’t do it on your own). If you do ask if you do it with them. If so, you will have lots of visits to get your questions answered by the team so that takes off a bit of the pressure to think of everything this one time. Although you may still only meet with the surgeon once so try to be prepared for that visit if you have questions for them. Have you decided on which surgery you would like to have? They will most likely have a recommendation for you. Especially if you have a medical reason to choose one over the other but some people get a choice.

    Unable to vomit

    I'm almost 3 years out and I still can't vomit. I've never had the foamies people talk about either. I've WANTED to vomit, but haven't been able to. Overate a few times and felt so nauseous that I tried to make myself vomit... and couldn't. I gag and that's it. It's reason number 1 as to why I watch how much and how quickly I eat very, very, very closely because if I overeat I feel nauseous for HOURS and nothing helps. So I think it's really person to person on what'll happen over time. One day you may actually be able to vomit. I'm wondering if that day will ever come for me... (is it weird that I'd be happy to actually be able to vomit?)
  25. How long did it take everyone to meet their protein goals? I am 4 days post op and STRUGGLING. I'm hitting my fluids no problem, but I'm getting maybe 20 grams of the recommended 60 and it's starting to stress me out. I have no desire to eat anything, so I'll force myself to choke down a small amount of soup... and then I feel so icky and stuffed that the thought of eating that particular thing again makes me incredibly nauseated. I'm only on liquids for 3 more days after today, and I'm hoping that moving to a wider variety of foods will make it easier to hit my protein because right now, it's yoghurt and protein shakes... which I never want to see again in my life.
