    Dealing with regain

This is ridiculous, yes, I’m not done. I know how weight gain messes with your head. Depression, shame beating yourself up. Much of getting back on track is the mental battles. If your struggling Talk it out with us, find a counselor, find some books on the issues your battling. Night snacking is my battle – some of my go to items - veggie tray with hummus, strawberries dipped in Hershey’s sugar free syrup or sugar free popsicles. Nip it in the bud and stop. Exercise/ increase your activity. Find what you enjoy. Do it even on days you don’t want to. Below is my reason why I get it in. Video "where does the fat go when you lose weight?"
  2. Regarding the weight gain while in the hospital, I'm sure it has a lot to do with being dehydrated pre-op, and then getting round the clock fluids while being admitted in the hospital. Plus tack on swelling from the surgery itself. It all kind of evens itself out, so by the time you're DC'd it's perfectly OK, to have not lost & maybe even gained. I hope that helps a little...?
  3. I got up this morning and weighed 179.6. This afternoon I weighed 182.0. I haven't eaten anything today (totally nothing). I had nasal surgery this morning to repair a deviated septum (that's why I haven't eaten yet today), they must have really pumped me full of fluids during the procedure. I have been peeing a lot since getting released and was really surprised when I stepped on the scale. I hope it goes away as fast as I gained it, I don't want to be above 180lbs. LOL

Went to my first seminar...i'm bummed

Bozzj, I too had the same thing happen to me so I totally know how upset and dissapointed you are feeling right now....But, with that said, I'll tell you that it turned out to be a great thing for me to have to wait the 6 months. First and foremost it gave me plenty of time for me to "wrap my head around" the fact that I would be giving up my old way of life. I had time to read about 14 books on the subject and once i found this website and found out what a terrific source of information it was the time just flew by. The way my surgeon's office handled the 6 months was as follows: 1st Month appt. he explained how it was all going to happen. He told me that he didn't need me to lose weight BUT he didn't want to see me gain not one single pound...or else!!! 2nd month appt. I met with the dietician...3rd month appt. met with the in office Diet Person - got weighed in....4th month appt. met with Pshcyologist for evaluation (mandatory for my insurance)...5th month appt. meet with in office Diet person again - got weighed in again...6th month appt. met with Surgeon for the "liver talk", then got surgery scheduled and came back one last time for pre-surgery talk with Surgeon....then surgery!!! The time flew by and at first I didn't really take it serious and ended up gaining 7 lbs...but then they gave me a strong talking to and explained how if I didn't do as I was told then I could get cancelled at the last minute for the weight gain, due to the enlargement of the liver from the gain. So after that I got serious and ended up losing 9 lbs. then another 6 before surgery. Since surgery I've had 2 fills with a 3rd scheduled for 2nd week in March. I've lost 46 lbs. and have never felt better. Anyway, hope this helps you feel alittle better. Good luck. Live well/Be well. KKG
  5. I have really been thinking alot lately due to a very good friend of mine having her fill all removed due to slippage. She now has to have her band removed. In the time since the fill was removed she has put on around 30lbs in about 2 months. I see alot of people struggle with the same problem. What scares me is that we get the band, get to goal or are working on it and then something happens and we lose our band or fill. Is it just inevitable that we are going to put all our weight back on because we cant continue to eat the small amounts we did banded on our own. I know there is no way I could live on the amount I do without my band. I know I am worrying about something that hasnt even happened and may not ever happen, but I like to think through the "what ifs". "What if" you lost your band...I think I would be back up to nearly 300lbs in 6 mths....*sigh* but outloud I say "I will never allow myself to get that big again, I cant"...I just cant go back to that...the thought scares the crap out of me enough to really put a dampener on my day. This post really doesnt require an answer, I am just thinking outloud and sharing my paranoid thoughts. I really think I have come to the conclusion in my mind that i will slip, its just a matter of when. I cant get a grip on the fact that my life will not be led fat and depressed. I have a right to be happy like I am now...I really do, why cant I just accept that? This university course really has me doing some major thinking.

Celebration! Fun Without Fighting Fat and Food!

Sunday, October 11, 2009 Celebration! Fun Without Fighting Fat and Food! Went to 125th Anniversary celebration of Roseland Christian School yesterday. Sang in the gospel choir and led the congregation in a song as an alto in a women's trio. Great speaker, great music. The 5th grade girls did a praise dance that was beautiful. I had to wear a black bottom and bright top for the choir. I wore form fitting low rise charcoal pants and a form fitting sweet-heart necked top. I couldn't believe it fit and I looked good. I had to wear an old strapless bra I never thought I'd fit in again. Then I went straight to my 40th class reunion. Fun in a different sort of way. However, hardly anybody I ever hung out with was there. I was not exactly Miss Popularity back in high school. However, three people I'm friends with on Facebook (though I never hung out with them in high school) did come up and mention how much they enjoy my blog. One of them is having LAP-BAND®® himself in December. His wife had a band which had to be removed and now she has a sleeve. She looked great. Like me, it was only 70 lbs but it was killing her emotionally as well as physically. I did my 2 protein shakes and nothing else so that I could eat normally at the banquet. By which I do not mean I ate the way I used to. But I ate some of everything served that I liked and went ahead and drank punch, water, and coffee while I ate, took tiny bites, and thoroughly enjoyed my food. No weight gain this morning so I must have done well. However, I will walk again today (once it warms up, brrrr) and will really watch my food as well. I'm going to tell the Dr. on my next fill that I want it filled to point where the food squeaks on its way through. I have no desire to ever go back to the old me. Celebration! What fun when you're not fighting fat and food!
  8. I say GO FOR IT !!!!!! im not even close to the point where i might be thinking of your type of surgery, but the part that got me was that you and i are the same age and both married , but you didnt think you should be even concerned with doing something like a body lift ,etc. Um........... well, why not ??? If you think you need it i dont think age or marital status should have any thing to do with it. How you feel about your body is very personal and if you're not comfy with it , well thats whats most important ! Your self esteem ! After my weight loss is done i will probably see a Dr to get rid of the spider veins etc that came with the weight gain. Do i think its neccesary ?? Damn right i do ! I want to look nice in a pair of just above the knees shorts and not have to hide my legs because of ugly veins . So i think you should do it ! Good luck and congrats on your weight loss !
  9. I'm 14 months post-op RNY and doing great...no problems whatsoever. To be honest, I don't understand how some gain their weight back after bypass because it is so uncomfortable/hurtful to overeat. One bite over my pouches limit and I hurt bad and vomit. My belly definitely lets me know when I'm approaching fullness. In other words, I wouldn't let the possibility of weight gain deter me from having the surgery. It's really within your control to avoid regaining any weight, in my experience and opinion.

    Loosing too much weight

I brought up my concern a few weeks back. I had just went below 170 at the time. Doctor wasn't overly concerned. Mention drinking a weight gain shake. He is supposed to call me after I notified his office yesterday what my weight had d5opped down too. Still waiting for that call.

    HCG diet?

I've never did it, but have 3 friends that did it religiously for a year. Lost shitpots of weight, gained it all back. 2 have had RNY, one is content being fat and doing the next fad diet.

Eat To Live...no Longer Living To Eat.....

Hi There,, I understand where you are coming from about the intervention. My Mom used to make comments to me about the weight gain but they were more in a chastised (or maybe nagging is a better word) manner rather then sitting me down to have an adult conversation. I love my Mom but she treated me like I was still 13 and refusing to do my chores as opposed to the 37 year old man that I was. I didn't need to hear "oh your getting fat again". I have no children of my own and have no place offering advice but I think the approach to the conversation is huge. Hearing it from someone else besides from a parent would be huge as well. Again, this is nothing but the opinion of a childless 44 year old. You're right though...he has to want to help himself and hopefully that realization will happen sooner then later while there is still time. Thank you for the well wishes and I hope you're son finds his way. **Before anyone judges me I am in no way blaming anyone at all for my weight or weight gain especially my Mother. I just wish I had gotten a real reality check before I got so out of control**
  13. I jumped on the scale yesterday morning and it said 226.6, and now this morning it's saying 229.9! I was completely shocked and frustrated! I have no idea why Or how I could gain 3.3lbs overnight but I am not happy! I even went to the gym yesterday and did 30 minutes on the treadmill (Dr Approved Treadmill only). Has anyone else experienced this? I know that my weight is going to fluctuate, but 3.3 lbs really? I can deal with 1-2lbs but not almost 4!
  14. Be careful with anti-depressents because some of them can cause weight gain. I know my doctor put me on Wellbutrin because it is not supposed to cause weight gain. I'd ask him which one would be right for you.
  15. Nuts are pretty calorie-dense and can cause weight gain if you eat a lot of them, but 1 ounce of cashews is about 160 calories (could be more if they have added ingredients, e.g., honey-roasted) and have no more impact on your weight than 160 calories from any other food. Are you including that in your 700 calories per day or is that in addition? Either way, you are under 1000 calories per day, which is low enough that you will continue to lose weight (especially if you're working out 60-90 minutes per day). Stalls are very common and normal. Weight loss isn't linear. Stick with your program and your weight loss will resume. I'm guessing that BMI is in error. I suspect the weight is meant to be 235 pounds and not 235 kg (518 pounds). While it's possible that she actually weighs 518 pounds, her goal weight of 150 kg (330 pounds) would be unusually high for a goal weight. Still, even at a weight of 235 pounds (BMI of 39), less than 1000 calories per day is well below TDEE.
  16. Please do not reply to this thread if you have any form of criticism or anything negative to say to me. I had lap band surgery in 2009. Everything was great until 2011. I got glandular fever and lost too much weight so I was very skinny. The port ended up eroding through my stomach because I was so thin and it was literally on the outside of my body. I walked around like that for well over a month with no problems. Eventually it was getting difficult to even drink anything so I went to the hospital and they cut off the port. Without a port my band was rendered virtually useless. Over the course of a year I put on 20kg and was very, very unhappy. Then I had a new port put on and lost 10kg to reach my goal weight of 50kg. Sadly I developed a strange sore on my stomach and then another one. They are both open wounds and ooze puss every day. I can also see that the port is about to erode through my skin again like in 2011. It seems that the area around the port is infected. I am very, very upset about everything. Cutting off the port which will lead to weight gain is not an option for me at all. My lap band is the best thing that ever happened to me and I would rather die than not have it. I am in a really difficult situation and was wondering if anyone has some practical advice. My local surgeon comes back from holidays in 2 weeks. I spoke to him on the phone and he said he basically has no idea what can be done except for cutting off the port.
  17. I received this email today from www.myfitnesspal.com . Basically, it says to avoid long-term weight gain we should: 1. Eat more Protein 2. Eat more healthy carbs (colored, high-Fiber veggies; fruits; whole grains) 3. Eat fewer highly processed "slider foods" (highly refined sweets, starches, chips, crackers, breads, white rice, white potatoes, white Pasta, etc.) Duh, huh? The emphasis was on both how much and what kind of foods we should eat. It made the point that every calorie doesn't count exactly like all other calories and described how high-glycemic foods cause the body to produce more insulin, which favors fat storage. http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/2-science-backed-strategies-to-avoid-long-term-weight-gain/?utm_source=mfp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly20150504&mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRokv6rBZKXonjHpfsX56e8rWaWyhIkz2EFye%2BLIHETpodcMTsZiN6%2BTFAwTG5toziV8R7DBLM153N8QXRTg

    Gained weight

It's very likely just a temporary weight gain due to the three or four week stall or just the change from liquids/pureed foods to soft. It happens. Keep on your post op guidelines and you will be fine.

    Pgx and the band

Hi. I am sorry you had a weight gain. I never heard of PGX. Have you thought of going back to your surgeon and dietitian for help? They maybe the best people to help you get back on track. Good luck.
  20. I was told they wanted me to lose 5% of my weight before surgery. They feel that those who lose weight before surgery have better overall success losing weight after. 10% might feel like a lot, but let's say you're 250lbs, that's only 25lbs. A lot of surgeons require a 2 week (or 1) liquid protein shake diet before surgery to reduce the liver. So many people drop weight like hotcakes when they do this. I started at 230 and lost 9lbs in my 2wk liquid diet. If you have one year to do this, I think you can do it without being drastic. OR if you wanted to do it fast, I'd suggest the liquid diet. The only other thing is that most surgeons don't want to see a weight gain before surgery, so you'd kind of have to plan that out...or if it's just for insurance approval, go liquid.
  21. Thanks for the advise, it will be hard to find a new Protein drink. This one is pre-made and not thick it goes down so smooth with no after taste. My stomach is very particular, if something smells funny, I'm nauseous. If I look at food that is slimy or bloody ect, I'm nauseous. If food has a bad taste or is gritty or leaves a bad after taste, I'm nauseous. These nauseous feelings have led to throwing up, hart burn, & the sweats. My parents stopped saying "just try it" along time ago. Lol The Protein drinks I've tried are: muscle milk (both powdered & pre-mixed), EAS Advanced Edge, EAS Myoplex, ensure , Special K, stuff from lifetime fitness, pure protein ready to drink, boost, Isopure all of which made me nauseous & threw up after one. If anybody knows of any Liquid Protein drinks that are real good, please let me know. As for the weight gain you were right I just weighed myself & I went down to 205lbs. Also I'm taking your advise on the home made Soup, problem is I'm not a cook, but I have a crock pot & the will to try. Thank you so much.

    I'm pissed at my doc@

That is okay. You can get back to eating right starting right now. No reason to wait until tomorrow. This isn't how every diet goes because after the waiting time is up you get to have a fill and work to find the sweet spot. The nurse was completely out of line. No doubt about that. Weight gain like that can be fluid. It takes 3500 calories to pack on a pound. I doubt that it true weight gain. Hang in there. Keep your chin up. Keep making smart choices and eating bandster portions. When you reach the sweet spot you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!

    Looking for guidance

slight weight gains when you're in or near maintenance are very common, but I'd try to get ahead of that because it could start getting out of control if you're not careful. It's way easier to lose 5 or 10 lbs than it is to lose 50. I've been in maintenance for about five years now, and I allow myself a few lbs of fluctuation, but when my weight gets up to my "oh crap" number, I spring into action. It's all hands on deck until I'm safely back in range. If 172 is comfortable for you, maybe have 180 as your "oh crap" rate? (just a suggestion - you could make it anything). To get back down, just really buckle down and make sure you're following all the rules until you're safely back down to where you want to be. note that a 10% gain (10-20 lbs for most of us) is VERY common after you hit your lowest weight. It usually happens during year 3, but then, you lost your weight very quickly, so you're likely already in maintenance even though it's only been a year (and congrats, by the way!! That's an impressive loss!!). That 10-20 lb gain is not inevitable, but it seems to happen to the vast majority of us without much "effort" on our part. I think it's just your body settling in at a weight it wants to be (not saying that you're doomed to stay there - with effort, you can get lower - but our bodies do seem to want to settle in at some "set point" - unfortunately, my "set point" is about six lbs more than I want to be, so it's a constant struggle!!)

Why We Were Obese: Our Community Speaks Out

Perhaps you were obese for as far back as you can remember. Or perhaps you were healthy and fit and turned obese over time. The result is the same in either case — and many of the reasons for why we become obese are also the same. Why We Were Obese A few years ago I posed a question to the BariatricPal community. I asked how it was that people with no history of obesity eventually became obese. What had happened? The answers I got were both accurate and astute. Here’s what people had to say. “…I changed to a career which didn’t naturally burn thousands of calories/day.” The most simple formula for weight loss or weight gain is the balance between calories consumed and calories burned. If you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight. If you burn less calories than you consume you will gain weight. Read, “Bad Eating Habits that Cause Weight Gain.” “I was sedentary for a long time and gained another fifty pounds.” Sedentary behavior (particularly watching television) can lead to sedentary snacking. Eating food while watching TV causes people to eat more calories, especially calories from fat. “…it became much easier to grab a quick ‘something’ instead of sitting down to a proper/healthy meal.” Time pressures from school, work, and other obligations can cause people to eat on the run or not get enough sleep. Both have been shown to contribute to weight gain. Read, “Healthy Chain Restaurant Meals.” “Low self-esteem. Possibly some depression…” Not only can depression contribute to obesity, but some medications for treating depression can cause weight gain as well. SSRIs often promote weight loss initially, but within six months of treatment many people report weight gain. Read all of the community responses on BariatricPal. Learn what Science shows are the reasons we become obese. The answers will surprise you! Continue reading this article on MyBariatricLife. Weigh-in with your thoughts. What is it that you do to prevent excess weight gain from ever happening to you again? If you have experienced weight regain after your bariatric surgery, what is it that you did to overcome it?
  25. I actually think about this! Before I gained the weight a few years ago, I always used to get hit on and complimented on my looks. Since the weight gain, nada. (Not that I’m fishing for compliments) It was a noticeable difference in how people treat me that I really had a hard time dealing with. I worry that I’ll be “jaded” when I do lose the weight. Like, would you have even noticed my existence if I still had the weight on me? If that makes sense.
