  1. I didn't have the same problem but I have had similar frustrations. In Jan last year they found I had a leak. I was checked for erosion and slip as well and had neither. In March I got the port and tube replaced but three months later, after complaining of not getting any restriction, they agreed that I was still losing Fluid and I had another operation in August. They checked the band while I was under and couldn't find a leak so they put everything back in and sewed me up. I still couldn't get restriction (got 10cc in my 10cc band at one point) and this past Friday, after not seeing my dr for 4 months, they've discovered I've lost almost 4cc from my band. I've had two operations and the leak is still there. And from Jan to August I gained 12kgs despite not going crazy with food. In Sept I started calorie counting and exercising formally again to stop my weight gain and I managed to stabilise, but it takes work. I have some fill in my band but I've always needed a high level of fill to feel restriction so I might as well not have any in. It's so disheartening, having something be relatively easy then lose it. To gain that weight back so easily, and to lose it be SO hard. So I feel you

    getting cold feet

By now your surgery is probably over!! Yeah!!! I think you will feel crumby for about 2 days. I had 2 surgeries this year and completely freaked out right before #2. I tried to go home in my hospital gown! (They were breast surgeries, not weight related) I'm very afraid of surgery also. But it's over now!! And you are on the road to health & happiness!! Pls ck back and let us know how you are doing. Also, my friends and family think I can do it without the surgery, blah, blah, etc. But I asked them to pls be supportive, because I will need it. So maybe you can confide in one or two friends? I think it will help a lot. Also, I will request you as a friend, once I figure out how to do that!! Blessings, Michelle

    AETNA DENIAL TWICE

They should have clearly outlined in the denial what the reason was for denial. With that said I have Aetna and was denied as well. I was denied thoughout the entire appeals process. The final step after exhausting all appeals though the insurance company is to request an idependeant external review process. I contacted Kelley Brown Lindstrom at obesitylaw.com on a recommendation from someone on this site. She and her husband Walter are AWESOME !! They handled every appeal and finally the external review process. My claim was overturned in the external review and Aetna was required to cover the procedure. Believe me I know the frustration and disappointment that comes with every denial letter. I lived this for OVER a year. I got my approval 1 day before my family vacation to Disney World in October 2010. My surgery was 12/28/2010. At this point I am almost 14 months post surgery and couldnt be happier with the weight loss. I am at 182 which is only 7 pounds above my goal weight. A little over a year ago I couldnt do a lap around the track without feeling like I was going to die. Since then I have run several 5K races with time under 25 minutes. I play hockey a couple times a week and I am training for a half marathon in May. Please dont let those denials discourage you. I know how bad they made me feel. I think I got a total of 5 of them over a 10 month period. Check out obesitylaw.com web site too. It cost me exactly $0 for all of their help. Did I say that Kelley is the BEST. After every denial she was so encouraging. She assured me that it was OK. That is what they wanted in my case. They had to get away from the reviewers in Aetna and get to the external review. I'm sure every case is differnt but again please hang in there. It is so worth the fight.

    Cheese... glorified fat?

I loooooove cheese & I eat it a lot for snacks and I add it to a lot of my meals. Since I use it so much, I buy low fat. I actually found a great cheese with less then 2 grams of fat per serving, low calories and almost zero carbs. It's called lifetime cheese. I love their jalapeno jack cheese. YUM! I also buy Trader Joes Light Sliced Provolone. Yum, yum! I'm losing aprox 2 pounds per week so eating cheese is not stopping my weight loss.

    Hey New At This

I'm getting banded around the first half of June 2012. I'm 5'10" and weigh 265. I have an education class to attend May 2, 2012 and my psych appointment is in the morning. I've heard that men tend to lose weight quicker than women. I guess we'll see how I do.

    It's Been a Rough Day

...another rough night, up most of the night with acid reflux and a swollen throat (that felt like it was closing up). I took more drugs than I care to mention. I finally turned the corner after I took some liquid Tylenol (I dunno, maybe it helped the swelling go down?) and forced myself to use my wedge pillow. The wedge pillow definitely helps a lot with preventing more reflux (although obviously it does nothing if I'm already raw and swollen). The problem is it's too tall; it's got a 12" rise and I feel like I'm sitting up, not lying down, and have a hard time getting comfortable. I've ordered another one from Amazon that got rave reviews from folks with reflux, and it's only got a 7" rise. Hopefully I can begin regularly sleeping on that one and "heal" my reflux. It's still a major pain trying to juggle all these meds and treatments -- omeprazole, Carafate, Mylanta, hot tea, heating pad... They all have their own limitations and restrictions, none seems to be 100% effective. I just can't wait until I'm out of this burning, choking acid phase. It's really for the birds. When I'm not troubled by acid, I feel great! And I'm losing weight fast. It's just that when the reflux flares up I'm MISERABLE and panicky and can't sleep.
  8. I can relate. Like music1618, I started logging my food and exercise. I found an app (my fitness pal). I am 3 years out and I have gained 10 pounds since I moved to DC last May. Unfortunately, I can tolerate almost everything, except ice cream (of any type). I feel like such a failure, which puts me in a serious funk and not so pleasant to be around. I am trying to get back on track, but I am afraid I may have stretched my pouch. Looking for a local Dr. to do some follow-up.

    Banded 6Yrs...success And Struggle

aww that really sucks. I too had a slip and lived with it for 3 years. When I finally saw my surgeon to discuss options, he said that if he were to place my band again, like likelihood of me losing the excess weight I had put on was about a 50/50 chance. Hopefully when you get your next fill, it will get you closer to restriction. Do they do your fills under floroscopy? Maybe you should see if they can order you a barium swallow to see how things are moving through your band. You may have a large pouch above the band like I did which will allow you to Eat more and not lose. I wish you luck. I didn't end up repairing my slipped band. I had it removed in sept and got sleeved 3 weeks ago.

    Banded 6Yrs...success And Struggle

I haven't had the band but am aware that we are all put on a low carbohydrate diet by dieticians, regardless of our surgery type. This has a big impact on insulin which has an impact on the way we metabolise food. And on our hunger levels. Might you have got back into eating (or drinking) more carbs than when you first lost your weight? Or are you now eating for longer, so that in total you ingest more calories? Sometimes changes in routine can lead to other changes that we barely notice, but over time these really add up. Psyching yourself up to be a "new bander" again - and revisiting dr and nutritionist/dietician - may allow you to "reset" yourself. Good luck with it all.

  18. Hello, I had my Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy on March 20, 2017. My surgeon was Dr. William Arnold. My starting weight was 314 lbs, day of surgery I was 300 lbs, and today I am 258 lbs. All together I have lost 56 lbs total (42 lbs since my surgery on March 20th). Its been almost 3 months and I have had lots of changes. I sleep better, walk differently (my gait is now different), less foot and hip discomfort, blood pressure is much much better. My hair loss isn't really any different than it was prior to surgery. I have noticed I have an intolerance to dairy products since surgery - lots of bloating, cramping, gas and diarrhea after any type of dairy consumption. I tend to get cold more often - I actually carry a light coat with me most places which is very odd for me because I have always been a hot person. My energy levels have continued to increase over the past few weeks. My relationship with food is much different now. I do get hungry and I do eat, but I could just as well go without. Many foods just don't sound good. As a matter of fact, most foods just don't sound good. I eat because I need to eat. I have become very selective of what I eat. Certain foods that I loved before don't settle well with me now and other foods that I didn't care for as much before are things that settle best with me. I have dropped a couple of sizes and people have really begun to notice. I have received lots of very nice compliments. I do exercise several 3 - 5 times a week - (walking, elliptical, Zumba, treadmill, stairs, resistance training, weight training). I would say the biggest challenge is learning to eat again and staying hydrated - finding the right foods that settle with me and not drinking and eating at the same time. Even though I can pretty much eat everything - food just isn't something I am as excited about as before. Perhaps this is something that will pass, however, I am actually very happy that food is not the center of my life anymore. I am very happy that I had the surgery and have absolutely no regrets. I embrace my transformation journey.
  19. I had my surgery in 2012. Weighed 278lbs. My lowest was 150lbs. Currently I am 190lbs. I want to be 145! As this is my healthy bmi weight, being 5'4. Anyone struggled with regain? It is coming off very slowly, dropped 5lbs within the last 3 weeks. Trying to eat veggies fruit and protein and upping my water intake. I have a caffeine problem, i like coffee too much. Started using organic 2% milk. Any suggestions or tips welcome. My downfall for regain was sweets and bread!!! I have eliminated bread again and pretty much down to no sweets again.
  20. Hello BariatricPal Friends! It's been close to 4 years since I've posted on here and didn't realize this site was still kicking! Anyway, I'm here to tell you about my story about me and my Lap-Band. I've had my Lap-Band for 2 and a half years before I had revision surgery because mine slipped due to me losing too much weight and my adjustments were very frequent. Before revision surgery, I was down 120lbs. After revision, I haven't gone back to the doctor. The last four years of my life have been a roller coaster. I'm close to my starting weight before starting my journey in 2013. Well after getting married, my daughter being born and fast forward to 2017, I'm back where I started before getting weight loss surgery... Crazy huh? It's not a good feeling by any means that's for sure. I could sit here all night and give a list of excuses. The biggest area of my problems was in my marriage (currently getting divorced). My significant other was against my surgery after my revision and it was a downward spiral from there emotionally, mentally and spiritually among other martial issues that hindered my weight. I got into bad habits again and just felt like my self worth and self esteem was non exist. I picked up all my weight I worked so hard to lose. Worst feeling in the world and feel like my surgery wasn't worth it and that I'm just another lap band patient that picked all their weight back up! Well now going through the motions of a divorce and will be putting it in the past once everything is settled, I've started to get back in the groove of things and I'm getting back to my old self again of taking control and have already seen weight loss and have seen my Lap Band doctor. I'm glad to be back on track and I can't wait to see the what future holds! -I'm a 5 year veteran with plenty of experience with the lap band so if anyone needs advice or wants to ask questions let me know! I used to be very active on this site! -Amine

    Last-Minute Nerves

Whatever you decide I know you can do it. Matt is 100% correct. You need to discuss this with your significant other and both be on the same page. You will need their support 100% after surgery and you need to also know how they feel. As far as the investing in yourself.. it is the BEST thing you can do. All our lives we always do for others and this is now our time. I however did the sleeve, which was half the cost of the bypass, but it is what worked for me financially. I also have done the dieting in the past and have gotten down 120 pounds and gained most of it back. For me, this is a tool that became a rule. The rule states, you cannot fall of the wagon because i will not allow you too. I have the will power, my issue is if i do fall off ( the last time because i traveled for work for 3 weeks and had to eat where the group ate) it was hard to get back on. But once i put my mind to something i am good. My mind was determined to do this, for me, and i went in and even up to the moment of surgery, it was like i had a task to do. I never thought of it is a major change to my body. You got this no matter what!

    NSV

I have a non scale victory i wish to share. I am super big into our local Scouting Organization. I am a Cub Master and an Asst Scout Master. I have had to buy a 3x shirt to wear and was not able to button the shirt completely and would have to pull it over my hips just to get it to button half way decent. I normally wore and over shirt to hide too. Well last night my Asst Cub master came to me and asked me how much i have lost. i said total between 35 - 40 pounds. he said it was showing because he had told his wife the night before after our boyscout meeting that he saw me with my shirt completely buttoned and was covering my hips. (i did not have it tucked in because we were putting up tents doing a check.) I was shocked because i also realized at the point he was right. Normally my shirt would be have the last button unbuttoned and would be sitting on top of my posterior because it would not lay down flat outside or inside my pants. We may at times never see reflections in the scale as far a weight dropping but our bodies are changing. the things we never would realize anyone would pay attention to people notice and that really makes us feel good. Good luck to everyone! I hope everyone has a NSV today!

    Hey Guys..!!

I appreciate your time and input, I guess at this point it is just hard to understand what you gain since I have never had it...?? always being big is what I have always been and it is part of who I am, I guess just coming to terms with letting that go is what I am trying to working on.. I think I just accepted it as its always going to be this way.. and it really hard to reverse that in my head... My thoughts behind doing this have always been that I have nothing to loose.... but latley I have been finding more stuff that I am having dificult time letting go... and since I have no true idea I what I will gain, it feels very unnerving... its funny last night I had a long discussion in my head around BBQ.... and honestly how important it is to me... cooking and drinking beer hanging around the pit all day and just the joy of eating it after all that work.... it really made me sad to think that I wouldn't be able to do that anymore because I never considered that not being a part of who I am.... Sometimes I think I am being over dramatic, but its scary how my brain is trying to sabotage this effort... just with the thought of BBQ ??

    Hey Guys..!!

Welcome. There is no way this is the easy way out - no more so then a person you uses meds to control their health issues is "taking the easy way out". You will still need to make the decision as to what food you eat/ when and how you work out etc. I hear you on many of your issues: I was a lover of food - and have MANY social activities based around food. The funny thing is 2 years out - I still do. I just eat differently- no more 3 dinner rolls before the meal, more seafood etc. If fact, no that I eat slower- I think I enjoy food more then ever. I had been a fast eat since grade school - half the second time you get sick- you learn to slow down. Its a habit and like all habits they can be changed. I am 5'10 and while my pre-surgery weight was 296 - I am sure I had hit the 300+ mark at some points thru the years. For me, the band allowed me to "reset the clock and start over". Looked at food differently -- its very hard to explain. After a life time of gaining and losing more weight then I could count. I know understand people who put a "holiday 5" and need to lose it. Good Luck
  25. Thank you both. Yes, I am going to use the 6 months as a way to try to lose weight on my own. I met with Dr. Brengman. He is approved with my insurance but the hospital is questionable. Do you both go to a support group? I would love to come to a meeting.
