    Weight gain?

My wife is 3 weeks out from surgery, has lost 47 pounds but has been having some issues as of recently. She started getting this severe pain in her right lower back/side, we think it could be constapation, she has went 3 times in the last 22 days, I ended up taking her to the ER and everything checked out normal from the blood work and cat scans. She has tried over the counter laxitives with no evail. She was originally losing 2 pounds a day, now she has gained 6 pounds, any ideas?
  2. You are only a few days out of surgery. I was in the hospital myself for 3 days before coming home, to find out that I had gained a few pounds. From what I have read, a large majority of people were in the same boat. After surgery you were most likely being pumped full of fluids. You have just had a major surgery and your body is dealing with a lot at this point. The Fluid retention will go down soon. I saw the first weight loss about 4 days after returning home (on top of the Water weight gained).
  3. When someone loses weight, gets a better education, has more money, moves to a better area, drives a flasher car...It's called Status and suddenly you are perceived as being more Successful ! There are plenty of people who don't want u to do better or to improve your self. When someone is moving up in there life, your Status ranking has changed. This can challenge so called family and friends because it means they will have to make more effort either with there weight or there behaviour toward 's you. As you will be perceived as having more options. Beautiful slim people are perceived as having preferential treatment. So many people think WLS is a magic and easy way to weight loss. It isn't U still have to work at it !!! The only way u can gain weight after WLS is by not sticking to the rules I am 5years out i have gained 14kg in less than a year my personal life has been a mess so i am sorting that out plus working on getting rid of the weight gain
  4. I think surgeons might not be too surprised at the weight gain over the holidays. Have you called them to ask about it? You might call and express your concern about the weight gain and ask if that's going to slow you down to surgery. Why worry about something you don't even know is an issue? Let me tell you something crazy. I went in for my pre-op appointment on Thursday and my weight was up a pound and a few ounces from my first appt in September (it was 267.4). I had to do liquids only on Sunday and when I arrive to weigh in at the hospital I weighed 254.6. WTH in four days? The only thing I can think is the liquids helped all the solids pass through my system and then the fasting the night before had me a little low on fluids. When I got home from the hospital I was 268 on my scale which is always a bit lighter than the Dr it seems. This morning I was 250 on my scale... =)
  5. I appreciate, but am also frustrated with this thread. We all have stories and whether some agree or not, our stories ARE connected to whether or not we ate more calories than we burned off. I gained 40 pounds with one pregnancy and didn't lose it, and nothing (seriously, no weight gain) with my second and then lost 40 right after. I was abused growing up, so I hid in a fat body. I got married and got comfortable. I went to culinary school, surrounded by good and rich foods all day. In my younger years because I was on my feet and working my butt off in restaurants, I was able to maintain my weight eating anything that I wanted. But I was never skinny or thin. As for genetics, one side of the family is all beanpoles and on the other short stubby round folk. I feel like I can relate to a piece of almost everyone here's story. Yes, we put too much food in our bodies. Maybe we did not exercise enough. Yes, we ARE responsible for those actions and more, but that by no means eliminates the "other" reasons we gained weight. I am a food and carb addict. I am at my heaviest weight ever. But I want to change, so here I am on a crazy WLS journey. I will change the way I eat and move but I CANNOT win this battle without facing the psychological reasons for the way I am. Just my 2 cents.
  6. What does everyone mean by supervised weight loss ?? I have to be weighed for 4 consecutive months with no weight gain , I can lose but not significantly. Is this considered my supervised weight loss ? I am required to meet with a nutritionist for clearance. Or is the nutritionist my supervised weight loss ? Seasoned Sleevers

Miguel Thanx for your post. It was a great story. Great lessons you have learned from your experiences. I have heard that if you continue to work with the sleeve as a "tool" things will go well with your food eating, and weight. you have given me good info after the after life of the sleeve., over a year of the sleeve, thats always what i've been concerned with. Yes, they fixed my big stomach so i would lose weight, now i have to work on my brain to remember the reason i need to lose weight - and to not regain any weight back. Thank you for your honesty concerning your weight gain, that can be hard to admit, its important to be honest with yourself first. you said, basically it was your doing with eating certain extra things and too much food available at no price/ cost. Just kindof letting things go, not weighing yoursef. But you are back on that wagon, and are in the process of loosing that excess weight, good for you. we're human, and can gain, even with the help of the sleeve, but we must guard ourselves, so we don't gain and all that hard "torture" we initially went through was not in vane. As you can see, i'm still far from goal, but maybe i'm being naive, i cannot afford to gain my excess weight back in the future, but i know it will be hard. It sounds like the sleeve will continue to work for me, but i know its only a tool, and i have to work with it also. Tale care best wishes Kathy

    Weight Gain

I am with you on the first 6 months. I lost my maximum weight the first 3-6 months. Then it slowed down when I reached 175 lbs. Then I kept it off, until I had complications with internal bleeding from gallbladder surgery. Then, soon after that, I had my tubes tied and I started to gain. I don't drink carbonated drinks. But, I do drink sweet tea occasionally. I do live in the south, so sweet tea is our choice of refreshment. Lol I am NOT complaining about my surgery at all, it has helped me keep my diabetes under control. My biggest problem right now is carbohydrates. Mostly snacking in between meals. Ive started taking CLA and Fat Burner along with a lean muscle mass supplement. And drinking at least 3 route 44 waters a day from Sonic. Lol hahaha I really love the crushed ice, reminds me of a slushie. I think its a mental thing, the crushed ice makes the Water exciting. My workout schedule needs tweaking. Mostly hit and miss when it comes to the gym. I have been trying to start walking around every day at our local park. And along with the water, and whatnot, I have noticed a significant impact on my bloating and weight gain. Starting to feel light on my feet again. I created a secondary page on Facebook, to use as an journal just between me and my counselor. I can keep up with my meals with posting about my meal with a picture. I need a few buddies on Facebook to keep me motivated though. Barbie Ann

    Different Types Of Bands

I have an Allergan omni form (latest band) 14cc band with 2 fills of 1.5cc each time. The surgeon pre-filled with 1.5cc during band date. So I have 4.5cc in a size 14cc band. My surgeon wants me around 2 pounds a week loss or 8 pounds per month. He really doesn't care about "green zone". He believes long term for a patient to adapt to good eating habits first rather than the band doing most of the work. I'm scheduled for a third fill visit on Dec 11, but I'm close to 8 pounds a month in weight loss. So, I might not get another fill until he sees a possible weight gain. I have a very cautious doctor.
  12. after a fill I do liquid for that day, then mushy for a day maybe two then back to solids. my doctor said the longer you stay on soft foods the harder it will be to get back on solids. he basically said by the 4th day his patients should be eating. remember mushy foods go thru the band easier and therefore you can eat a lot more of them which can cause weight gain. p.s. this was a good poll!

    Anyone on antidepressants or moodstabilizers

I take Wellbutrin and Geodon for bipolar. My doctor put me on these almost 4 years ago because I obviously already had a weight problem and they have the least weight gain effect. I was banded six months ago and I take them as prescribed with no problems. I have lost 86 pounds since surgery and have six pounds until goal, so they haven't stalled my weight loss.

    Tattoos...

I got a tattoo on my foot about two years ago. The tatt artist told me that weight won't effect the foot tatt, much. Actually, weight loss can make a tatt look better. Unlike weight gain where it is stretched. Why did I choose my foot? I figured it was the one place on the female body gaurenteed not to sag

    Exercise

As I am not yet six weeks post op, I am only walking. It has helped with the weight loss because I am burning the little bit of calories that I am consuming. I usually eat one of my meals before doing so, something that is high in protein. I plan on doing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) when allowed. I personally believe that walking, trying to walk at high pace, is the only exercise that I need to continue to do, however, I am feeling really good and excited about doing more. I have always wanted to be an "athlete." Not sure why I have this need. Prior to my weight gain with my first child, I did a lot of running and even completed a sprint triathlon, so that is my goal again. The big thing, as mentioned above, exercise is important for your health-not just physically, but it is also good for your mental health. Find something that interests you and will keep you motivated. I live in China where walking is done by everyone, it is free and it is helping me reach my goals faster.

Holy cow that was a cinch!!

Thanks everyone! It really has been such a great experience! Today, 2 days post-op, I have not taken any pain meds. It just feels like I pulled a muscle in my left side and that is totally manageable. And I have already lost the surgery weight gain plus 1 pound! And I got a shower!!!! Today I started full liquids and felt the restriction for the first time. It is heavenly to sit down to 1/2 cup of blended cream of chicken Soup and be so full afterwards. I can sleep on my side easily, have done from the first day home and was able to give my babies, 3 and 5 year olds, baths tonight. No doubt I had a superb surgeon but I think one's attitude is the real key. This is my choice and I welcomed the band into my body like a little, very expensive:laugh:internal personal trainer. Great luck to us all!!!:cursing:

    Day 4 - Post Op....

Evening everyone. I had my surgery on the 17th as well. Am doing better than what I thought I would be. By day 3 "pain" was pretty much "really sore" and I haven't had to take any of the perscription pain meds since. I go tomorrow for my first follow up which I am looking forward to as I am really about the climb the walls - I live alone and doc said no driving for a week. Weather and the no driving has made it hard for exercise, but hoping to be back in the gym on the 26th. Been doing cream of chicken, protien shakes and wonderslim puddings. Mentally, it's a bit crazy as I feel like I am constantly "eating" and of course, this want to equate to weight gain, but I have to remember I am only eating abt 2-3 oz/hour. Today I am finally feeling like I am getting a good amount of water in. Have felt so thirsty and know I have been dehydrated. Just try to make sure if I am not "eating" I am taking in water or other clear liquids. Good luck to everyone!!!
  19. My Birth control sends TOM packing, but I blame my weight gain on the birth control instead of TOM. (Depo Provera shot)
  20. I havn't seen TOM in over 20 years, but blame some weight gain on lack of hormones.
  21. I figure I need to lose from 48 to 63 pounds. It might as well be 10x that much as there is no way I will be able to do it without a sleeve. Before my most recent back injury, I could lose some weight but would always gain that weight back and then some. At least since my mid 30s. Years back I was thinking about this surgery, but after gaining 25 pounds in less than a years time now I need to do something. Positive feedback loop with pain, weight gain and then each is causing more of the other. I have tried countless diets, diet pills, HCG injections, sensa - now hitting menopause & pain limiting me from exercising the way I have my whole life - I'm not giving another year of my life over to more weight gain and debilitation. Already suffering from high lipids and GERD. I need help to get out of this cycle, and to keep from getting even heavier & worse off than I am already.

    Weight Gain

I have currently experienced weight gain due to stress eating during a divorce process. I had RNY gastric bypass in 2012. I lost nearly 80 lbs. My highest weight was 280 lbs before surgery and support group. My lowest weight was 176 about 8 months after surgery. I had emergency gallbladder surgery in 2014. I had severe complications with internal bleeding and bile drainage. 5 surgeries were performed in a 2 month period to fix me. Soon after my gallbladder surgery, my husband and I separated. And I started seeing myself decline. Under the advice of my gynecologist, I had my tubes tied to prevent pregnancy. Slowly, I began to become sluggish and lazy, and so did my metabolism. I have gained 28 pounds back, and I am not happy. I blame myself most days. Please provide any information that would help. Sent from my SGH-T399N using the BariatricPal App

    Hungry!

Prednisone can cause weight gain. See if you can get off of it or find an alternative. If the prilosec is not working ask for a different med. Acidity can make you feel "hungry" when you really are not. Be your own advocate!! As for weight gain, I've see some Vets on here suggest that you go back to basics. Lean Protein only, no calorie fluids, calorie cap at 800. Some even go back to all liquids stage just to "reset." Good luck!
  24. Heather, what was your weight gain like in previous pregnancies? I gained none in my third, like I said, but in my previous two before that, it was only 10 or 15lb both times. I'm just not someone who gains a lot of pregnancy weight. Dont even talk to me about what breastfeeding does to me though, I piled it on then!
  25. I think that's a good idea. That said, the whole you need to gain 25lb thing is a bit of a myth. Your baby needs nutrients, not calories. It takes very few extra calories to grow a baby, perhaps 250 a day in your third trimester. If you are taking in the nutrients your body needs during pregnancy, things will probably be just fine. In my third pregnancy, I gained no weight at all. I kept it completely stable BY DIETING. Moderately - weight watches, 27 or so points a day. With my doctor's blessing. I took a good supplement and I ate really really well because I was already about 210lb when I conceived and had had blood pressure probs resulting in induction twice before. When I had Eliza, she was a healthy 8lb and perfect, and I left the hospital 10kg (25lb) lighter than when I'd conceived. Mild fat loss from YOUR body wont harm your baby. But that said, you've actually lost while pregnant, which would indicate your energy needs arent being met. I'd consider a supplement like your doc suggests, I wouldnt curtail physical activity because it is so good for you, but supplementing calories AND nutrients might be a really good idea. You dont want to lose any more but it probably wont matter if you dont manage to gain much. But bear in mind, that without the weight of your baby, and all the extra fluids in your body now, you actually probably weigh a bit less than 142. You want a bit of condition on you if you want to breastfeed! Good luck, dont let it worry you though, once upon a time a much much smaller weight gain was considered healthy in pregnancy, the standards quoted today are just current trends is all.
