That's a really amazing loss, you should be proud of that. You did that all without surgery Maybe tea or (hold on to your purses, ladies) coffee could help? If you're in one of those programs that disallows coffee for reasons science can't explain, maybe give them a call to ask if you could start a little early?

I doubt at this point you're eating too much. There are so many things that factor into your rate of weight loss - gender, age, metabolic rate, activity level, starting BMI, whether or not you lost a lot of weight pre-surgery, how closely you stick to your clinic's food plan, etc. The only two on this list that you really have any control over at this point are your activity level and how close you're sticking to your food plan. If you're sticking to the plan and exercising, then that's pretty much all you can do. So just make sure you're doing that. Otherwise, some people just have pokey bodies for whatever reason. I was a slow loser from the get-go...

@SanDiego Girl : Ok, first the disclaimers: Disclaimer 1: I am not a medical professional/nutritionist...just an avid reader/googler. Disclaimer 2: The values below are very generalized and assumes that you have more or less an average metabolism, average functioning insulin regulation, average body fat percentage for your stats, etc. etc. TL;DR: If you want to skip my very long-winded dissertation below, the gist of my message is this: you may want re-evaluate your calorie consumption-activity level combo, cut the sugar, and manage your expectations. Now, your weight today is pretty much what it was when you had your metabolism study, so let's assume you still have a BMR of 1486. This means that if you all you did all day was sit like a statue and breathe, then you would burn 1486 cals for just existing. Your reported exercise can be classified as "Moderately Active" (30-60 mins of sustained elevated heart rate sessions 4-6 times a week). Add this to the regular activity of every day living (i.e., just moving), and your daily caloric needs would be approximately 2150 cals a day to MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT. To lose weight, you will need to consume under this amount (or up your activity levels) CALORIES Without knowing exactly what's in your lunch salad, nor what consists of your meat/veggies dinner, nor what amount of each, I calculated the you are probably consuming about 1750 calories (I arbitrarily assigned 300 & 400 for each of lunch and dinner). This means, using the oft-used statistic that a deficit (or gain) of 3500 cal results in a 1lb loss (or gain) of body weight, you theoretically should be losing on average 0.8 lbs a week. This assumes that you NEVER go over 1750 cals a day, and you sustain your current activity level. Based on your original post, it sounds like you aren't. **Note that this is not an exact science, and I personally think 3500=1lb is an overly simplistic assumption, but for the purposes of this post, lets just keep it simple. I digress...** Soooo....if you would like to lose a bit more, a bit faster, try cutting your current cals by a couple hundred (your teams suggestion to aiming for 1200 is sound in this case). Your reported typical daily menu above includes 880 cals of JUST SNACKS. Perhaps try cutting out the Starbucks and 1/2 the nightly Dove chocolates. Doing this alone will save you 245 calories a day. SUGAR Another more controversial suggestion would be to cut all (or drastically reduce) sugar/sweeteners. Not only is sugar poor nutritionally, excess amounts causes spikes in glucose levels, which may to lead insulin resistance: which means the cells in your body aren't as efficient at removing glucose in the blood, so it will store it as fat. Which is weight gain. Further, it is theorized that sugar begets sugar. When you are eating it, you want more. So if you can white knuckle it for a few days and get it out of your system, it is suggested that you will find that your sugar cravings will subside. EXPECTATIONS Lets say you keep your cal level at 1750 & moderate activity levels (and do not deviate from it). This still means you would theoretically still be losing 0.8 lbs a week. This also means you would reach your 180 goal in 50 weeks. Are you ok with this timeline? Can you sustain at most 1750 cals a day for 50 weeks? If you go above this level you will extend that timeline accordingly. Edited to add: remember that this 1750 max cal level will reduce as YOU reduce! You are quite a ways out of surgery and unfortunately don't have the extra tailwind that recently sleeved people have. Its very easy to get frustrated and give up when your hard effort results in what is perceived as slow weight loss. The typical manifestation of this frustration is to eat (and usually its like pizza or cookies and NOT carrots and yogourt). If you can figure out how to deal with the frustration for just longer periods of time (I mean no one actually expects this to be completely solved immediately by sheer will), you will already be a couple steps up in the game. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. Am really sorry that this was so long. P.P.S I think its worth noting here again in the postscript the Disclaimers noted above: Disclaimer 1: I am not a medical professional/nutritionist...just an avid reader/googler. Disclaimer 2: The values below (sic) are very generalized and assumes that you have more or less an average metabolism, average functioning insulin regulation, average body fat percentage for your stats, etc. etc.
  5. Hi! My names Jason, or Kai. I am transgender (MtF) and I am getting Gastric Sleeve soon. In about 2 years is when i’d be scheduled to see a surgeon about reassignment surgery. Id have to get my BMI down to 30, or at my height (6’1), 225 pounds. I am 18, CW/SW 460, Male, etc (can provide any info). I was wondering if, with the sleeve, can I reach my GW of 225 in 2 years? I know this is a tool, i’m planning on treating it as such. I plan not to stray from my diet and spend 10+ hours in the gym a week. I was just wondering if that was possible.

    Flatulence at a year post-op

So sorry you are experiencing this. Just a couple of other causes to consider. Were you on meds to control your weight or for weight loss in the past? Some of those can cause anal leakage. Also it can be a side effect when you’re older of Spina bifida occulta which many people have but don’t realise. (Mine was picked up three years ago when I was 52 & not at birth.) Hope they can find a cause & solution soon.
  7. Thanks for the reply. So to clarify, you also GAINED weight for about the first week but beyond the week you ended up losing? It's just something I haven't read anywhere - I've read stagnant/ no change or minimal loss at first. But continuous weight GAIN is not something I've read in anyone else's experiences. If that happened to you and others and then you ended up beginning to lose despite increasing food intake over time, then I would feel a lot more 'normal' about myself right now.
  8. Hi, My sleeve was done about 9 days ago. Initially, I slept for 3 days with very minimal oral intake. Ended up 9.8 lbs DOWN when I woke up post-op day #4. I assume that wasn't fat loss since it had only been 3 days - probably just loss of water weight from no food/ limited water intake in those first few days when I wasn't awake enough yet, which I know is temporary artificial weight loss. But I didn't expect that I would start gaining again literally starting post-op day #5. Since then, I've been gaining it all back. 1-2 lbs per day. I'm on a full fluid diet still as required with Plus 2 protein shakes a day. Max 500 kcal per day for now. Yet my weight has been going up starting on post-op day #4 onward, ~5 lbs in ~5 days. I'm nearly back at my original weight pre-op about 9 days ago. I know that weight re-gain is a common thing post sleeve but I thought that was after months or years. Has anyone had the experience of weight gain starting basically right after surgery? And if so, can you tell me if your body eventually caught up and started losing and by what week after surgery did you start losing? If I'm not able to start losing on such a restricted immediately post-op diet with 300-500 kcal per day max right now, how can I expect to start LOSING when my intake inevitably goes up to something resembling more of a sustainable level of intake? Thanks.
  9. So, I was getting my hair cut today and was talking to the women cutting my hair (not someone I've seen before). We started talking about how there isn't much to do right now because we are still pretty limited. I mentioned I was out hiking yesterday since being outside is one of the things we can do. She said that must be why I'm so skinny I've NEVER, not once before been called skinny...

    Anyone for October 2020?

I do worry that I'm eating too many calories. My dietitian has said that I can go up to 1200 calories but I wonder if the higher calorie intake is what's stalled my weight loss? Re the calories, as well as adding protein, I also got a bit concerned about the lack of fibre and omega 3 oil foods etc in my diet (I can't tolerate fresh tuna or sardines and most whole veg). So I added in 15g per day of a cold milled seed mix (flax, sunflower & pumpkin) at 84 calories (I put it on bran flakes at breakfast), plus 6g of chopped nuts: 42 calories (hazelnuts & pecans) and 15g dried apricots (30 calories). With the calories for 25g bran flakes and the milk on it, it bumped up my calories a lot. I'm going to see how it goes, but if my stall doesn't break I'll probably pull back on my calorie intake. I'm finding the balancing of everything really hard.

    February 2021 Sleeve Surgery

It is normal to be scared. It is a permanent procedure, but that is what I needed. I had the sleeve done in August 2020. No complications and glad I did it. The procedure is a tool, but you have to work on putting healthy food in your body. If you follow the food guidelines, you will not fail. We all make mistakes. Don't beat yourself up when it happens. Just reset and start again. Your health is a life time commitment. Good luck with your weight loss journey.
  12. I had my vsg in August 2020 with no complications. I started with a BMI of 35. My BMI is now down to 23.5. Since surgery (26 weeks), I have lost 47 lbs, but if I include the pre-op diet weight loss, I have lost 59 lbs. The weight loss has been slow. With the sleeve, they remove ghrelin. Ghrelin stimulates the brain to increase your appetite. It has been strange not to crave sugary treats. I have no regrets getting the surgery. Good luck with whatever procedure you choose.

I am 5'6' and I Jazzercise 6 days a week which is 35 min of cardio and 20 minutes of weights and toning. Here is a typical day Brkfst - Fairlife protein shake Snack - tangerine Lunch - 230 salad snack - nuts and string cheese or protein shake Starbuck skinny Carmel Machiatto Dinner ; Meat and Veggies - Soup or Tacos - Zoodles and turkey spagetti sause snack - Skinny cow and 5 dove dark chocolates. My metabolism study I weighed 233. They put on Contrave and then I was on a low dose of Bufrofren and something else that made my hair fall out. I got down over 3 yrs to 195. I'm so tired of working so hard to be overweight. My Doc wants to do an ablation again. I'm really at a loss.
  14. For treating a regain problem, I prefer the DS as it is stronger metabolically than either the VSG or RNY - the RNY is too close to the VSG in strength to reliably offer a significant improvement in weight loss, from what I have seen over the years. Figure maybe 20lb loss on average - about what one would expect from going through all the intense dieting associated with going through surgery again. (There are some who do significantly better, bit it seems to be more a function of their determination to "make this work" or "not screw it up again" than the actual surgery itself. Call it something like a surgical placebo, lol.) By your surgeons not finding the codes for the DS implies that they are talking about the newer SIPS/SADI/"loop DS" which is a single anastomosis adaptation of the traditional BPD/DS (biliopancreatic diversion) which has been routinely covered by US insurance and Medicare for the past 14-15 years, but is a more complex procedure that relatively few bariatric surgeons perform. Some practices that do the SIPS/SADI use the BPD/DS billing codes which is technically insurance fraud, but if they're comfortable doing it, that's their concern. Revising the VSG to a DS, of either flavor, is straightforward as each use the VSG as its basis (some don't even consider it a revision, more a "completion" of the ultimate configuration.) The strong point of the BPD/DS is its regain resistance - regain is possible as it is with any of these procedures, but it is harder. I know many with the DS who are 10-20 years out (my wife included) who are still maintaining a healthy weight; some are up a bit more and working on losing their "Covid 19" - just like "normal" people but major regains are relatively uncommon. The SIPS/SADI type of DS seems to fall somewhere in between the VSG/RNY and the BPD/DS - I have seen a few in the various forums who have had it and seem to be doing well with it, but it doesn't have as long a history. Any of these procedures - the RNY, DS or SIPS - will be somewhat fussier and less care-free than your VSG when it comes to supplements and follow up; the RNY is maybe a bit less so, but one can get into some serious trouble with any of them if one slacks off. If keeping up with supplements and annual labs is not an issue with you, then any of them should be fine.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

I don't think anyone has lost any weight... but my sister tried to follow the same diet as me... without the surgery. It didn't go well. I had an appointment with body comp last week... I'm down 6.75 inches off my waist! Also, I'm doing low fat, low carb... but recently was told to increase carbs to increase weight loss.

Oh my god...so good, right? More than a quarter of the way there!! You must feel amazing? How are your friends and sister doing with your weight loss? hmmm...very strange re: blood work. Are you doing high fat, low carb (keto) or low fat low carb?

What Should I Pack For VSG Surgery?

I’m packing face wipes, hair brush and hair ties, chapstick, toothbrush and toothpaste, yoga pants, crocs, GasX chewables, extra long phone charger and phone. I’ll probably throw in a few more last minute items but that’s most of it. I hear some people bring a sleep mask and ear plugs, too.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Hi everyone! I've been so busy with kids, work, school, and just life! Weight loss has slowed down some, but still 10 lbs in the last month, so way better than I would have ever done on my own! Friday I had a dr appointment with my PCP for a referral about a cyst I have on my forehead... as I lose weight, it's becoming more noticable. I also mentioned I think I had a UTI. So did the customary pee in a cup. She said that the urine showed signs of liver issues... like too much urobilinogen and bilirubin in my urine, as well as ketones. So she ordered blood tests. The blood tests aren't exactly normal either, but of course I haven't heard from her because the test came back after office hours, and she's off on monday and tuesdays. A friend said it may have been because I had fatty liver... but wouldn't someone have said something throughout the whole prep for surgery process if that was the case?
  19. I used Blossom in August 2020. I have Anthem Blue Cross insurance. Before I agreed to the vsg, Blossom took my insurance info. I paid $9000. To date, my insurance has paid over $10k. I had a great experience with Blossom. Sorry it didn't work out for you. Good luck on your weight loss journey.
  20. Congratulations on your surgery date. I went to Blossom in August 2020. They have a great program. VSG is a great tool to help with weight loss, but you have to do the work. Let me know if you have any questions.
  21. Congratulations 👏. I had vsg done at Blossom in August 2020. I went from NJ to Vegas myself. I had no issues. Blossom has a great program. VSG is a great tool to help with weight loss.
  22. I got the sleeve in 2011 and I lost about 100 lbs after.. since then I have gained about 60 back. I had a many complications with the surgery and had my staples pop and had to have follow up surgeries. Since then I have found an amazing doctor who I trust and he spoke to me about a revision surgery for weightloss. He recommended the DS but apparently their was not a surgery code to bill it yet * this was last January 2020 * . He then recommended the bypass. I agreed and started everything with hopes of getting the surgery by June 2020 before he retired. Due to covid my surgery got pushed indefinitely and he retired. In august when they started to do elective surgeries again a Doctor from his group reached and said that my original doctor asked this new Dr. to take me on as a patient moving forward with the surgery. I had decided that I did not know him that well and would not proceed at that time. Well I am still struggling with weight loss. A huge amount it is effecting my daily life I work in trauma and psych in the hospital and I am in nursing school and having issues keeping up due to my energy and weight. I have recently made the decision to continue with the pre op tests and get my chest xray and labwork redone to see if I can fast forward this surgery and get it by end of march beginning of april. I was just wondering for people who have had the revision surgery --- sleeve to bypass or sleeve to ds - how it ended up for them. I doubt I will be able to get the DS even though that is what I want due to the insurance issues so bypass is the way it looks. Also recovering times and everything else please. I am doing this one solo only 1-2 friends will know I am having the revision due to so much stress and people giving me their opinions about the situation the first time I do not feel like dealing with again.

    Kitchen gadgets

Definitely a blender and small dishes (so it looks like your portions are bigger than they really are). I had both of those before surgery so didn't need to buy anything new. (I have no idea what an immersion blender is.) And I'll be honest, I've never weighed my food. I could get an idea of how many ounces foods were based on my measuring cups--and after a while I had a sense of how big my portions should be. As those who have read my posts along the way, I'm not much of a cook and had no creativity in terms of my diet during the weight loss phase. I just threw stuff i the blender or mashed it with a fork during the soft food phase. Everyone does this differently, but for me it needed to be simple. I didn't (and still don't) have the patience to weigh my food.

    February 2021 bypassers?

@TreeTrunks Thank you for the welcome! I start my preop diet on 2/5, so only a few more days to go. I feel like I have so many appointments between now and the 19th. I haven't bought too much stuff as I'm afraid to. I did buy some templates on Etsy to track my water in take, my weight by the week and a sheet for my measurements. My boyfriend helped me last night take a bunch of before photos for me to put in my weight loss journal. I am right there with you with the overthinking! We will get through this though!

    Motivation

How tall are you? Your doctor is possibly suggesting a weight that places you in the healthy BMI range - can’t tell without your height though. There’s nothing wrong with setting your own weight loss goal. A lot of people are very happy to get to a weight that is less than what their surgeon originally suggests & they find it easy to maintain. As BigSue suggested, you may reach your goal than decide to lose more. Losing the weight can motivate you to lose more. I lost an extra 11kg (24lbs) from my surgeon & my goal. I wasn’t intending to, my body just kept slowly dropping weight even though I kept upping my calories. It seems to have finally settled & I think this is where my body wants to be. And I’m very happy where I am too. Good luck with your surgery.
