  1. Hi, I am new to this site.. I have been looking for an answer all over the internet and I hope you guys can help me. I am 4 weeks post op and for the last 1.5 weeks my weight has fluctuated up and down 2lbs. I didn't think weight gain was possible with this surgery. I called and talked with the medical assistant at the office and she said to keep and eye on it. Weight everyday and if it continues then I need to come in, that this is not normal. I am not having any pain or anything like that, my weight is just STUCK! Has anyone had this? I am sticking to my stage 3 diet not eating to much ect... ect.. Help!! Total loss so far has been 17.6 lbs
  2. So my grief counselor has suggested I try Wellbutrin. Things have been especially bad for me lately because its coming up on the 1 year anniversary of my friend's suicide. We've also been exploring some buried emotions from my brother's death that I never really got over (apparently drowning them in alcohol didn't make them go away ;(. ). At this point I'm having difficulties experiencing any sort of emotion besides sadness.....most of my days are spent going through the motions and putting on a show for others and quite frankly I'm exhausted. She thinks the Wellbutrin will help me with the biochemical issues I may be having that are hindering my healing process. So I'm going in to see my PCP on Friday to get his OK for the Rx. So anyone else taking it for depression? How's it working for you? Just wondering if there are any weight loss/weight gain/appetite issues I could expect by taking this medication. Any other weird side effects? I've taken Prozac and other SSRIs in the past for anxiety and stress, but the main problem was I could not sleep while on them. Not sleeping was worse than the reasons I was taking them in the first place so I had to stop.

    Feeling like Im not making progress

    You really did not give a whole lot of information for us to help you. Were you on any special post op diet? (Liquid/mushy/etc.) Are you getting 40-60 grams of protein/day? Are you drinking 50-60 oz of Water every day? Are you restricted with sugar? (some shakes are high in sugar and can cause weight gain) How much have you lost? (what weight did you start at?/before surgery?/since surgery?) Did you have any other surgeries when you were banded? How many calories/day? (you really need between 1000-1200/day in order to lose weight) The program that I am in, we are mixed with all surgeries (band, gastric bypass, and sleeve). While it may seem, like you are not making progress, you actually might be making great progress. Also, another way of looking at this. . . If you are like me, overweight for most of your adult life, I am usually gaining weight. If you have NOT gained weight or have lost a little ---- that is a WIN!! It takes time to about face and lose weight after being overweight. (I hope that makes sense) What I am trying to say, is that we are not all the same. There are so many factors that affect our progress. Talk with your nutritionist, doctor, therapist and find out. Log everything that you are eating/drinking. Measure everything. Meet with your nutritionist and they will help you find the solution. You may be overlooking something quite simple, that will make the difference. The band is not the answer. Restriction is not the answer. (It only helps with our feeling of fullness and our hunger sensation) It is a tool to get you the answer. Sorry to say, but the truth is that nutrition is really the answer. Good luck to you.
  4. @@Jamburd1, I can't offer any advice because I am going through the EXACT SAME THING. Our surgery date is almost identical, same weight gain & thought process. It's almost as if you wrote what I've been thinking but was too scared to write. In the past two months I've gained 8 pounds ( and never made it to goal). Once we get our mind right we can tackle this gain. It is possible, I've seen many people post that on this forum. @@Smoaklas awesome advice that I will take for myself. @@Jamburd1 Hang in there and let's do whatever it takes to keep the 8lb gain from becoming 18 lbs. we've been through too much

    Wellbutrin?

    @@Kindle - Firstly, big hugs to you. I'm so sorry you're suffering. I take Wellbutrin, and have for many years. It's one of the only anti-depressants that isn't known to cause weight gain in a lot of patients, and it generally doesn't affect sleep if you take it in the morning. I however take one in the morning and one with dinner and I have no trouble sleeping. I wish you the very best of luck and please know it will get better. <3
  6. Some of the weight gain could be muscle if you are working out especially if you upped your workout. Also as women we can gain five pounds in a day due to hormones and our monthly cycle. As long as you are eating well I would just watch and see if it was just a fluke. You could also try if you are not already eating very low carb.. less then 20 grams a day... Just a thought...

    Low Fat or Low Carbs?

    Hello Bry, as someone who prefers well balanced meals it's the kind of fats and carbs rather than complete avoidance of either that should be looked into. Fats should not be saturated or trans, and be higher in Omega 3 which is a heart healthy fat. Animal fats are the worst, so if you eat meat be sure to trim the fat off and cook with extra virgin olive oil or something similar. Carbs are not evil, it's the type of carb that is bad. Obviously vegetables and fruits offer our bodies natural Vitamins and antioxidants that we need. It's always better to consume them naturally on top of any supplements that we take. I would never suggest to anyone to avoid these types of carbs to lower the carb count at the end of the day. Whole grains are good too and provide a lot of Fiber which majority of Americans lack even with a normal stomach. Although we can live without grains and some people are allergic to them, but I do enjoy whole grains myself and it was never a contributor to weight gain or a hindrance to my weight loss. The carbs we should avoid are anything with refined sugar and any foods with this additive, and it goes by a long list of names. You would do yourself a great favor by learning them all. They are also known as "white carbs". It all boils down to calories in and calories out, while making the healthiest choices for our bodies. If you ever get the chance take a course on Nutrition. I have taken several and I will be forever grateful that I did. I personally think it should be a requirement of any living human being, we learn how to do our jobs, but we don't learn how to take care of our Vessels.
  8. You should be physically capable of eating pretty much anything eventually. Some people do develop sensitivities to some foods post-op, but that's not the norm. However, you obviously want to be smart about what you eat in order to lose weight and maintain that loss. Can you have pizza and cake every once in a while? Sure! Should you eat it every day? Obviously not. You should forever be putting Protein first and striving to meet your protein goal every single day, whether you are a month post op or 10 years post-op. Doing so will leave little room for the crappy, carby stuff. I'm 17 months out. Have been maintaining at goal for 5 months. I eat pizza fairly often (maybe 2-3 times a month?). I can usually eat one whole small piece with the crust and then the cheese and toppings from another piece or two. Crust (or anything with yeast) fills me right up, so I usually can't do more than one piece with crust. I'll certainly never be sitting down and eating a whole large pizza at one time! Last weekend was my mom's birthday and I had white cake with white frosting. It was delicious! But only after I'd eaten my chicken at dinner and waited a good 45 minutes to an hour. So, yes, you can have treats on occasion in the future. You just have to be smart about it like any normal non-WLS patient does. Think of yourself as a skinny woman trying to maintain her weight. She can have the occasional indulgence, but doing it every day will lead to weight gain.

    Jcool, I actually did the pre-op for 1 month prior to the surgery. I am 5'2" and my starting weight was 265. I was terrified my liver would not shrink enough. Also, once I booked my surgery, I knew if I didn't start the pre-op ASAP I would probably eat myself into more weight gain out of nervousness/anxiety before the surgery. I still had some 'cheat' meals. My last big meal before I started the Clear liquids only was sashimi and I even had some mochi (japanese rice cake dessert). I weighed 148.5 the morning of surgery. I had no complications, so I was really relived. When I did the pre-op diet, I did isogenix. I don't do them anymore, because they are 250 calories per shake, but I followed the isogenix program completely for the month of pre op, 2 shakes a day and one meal with grean veggies and lean Protein. It was easier to follow than I anticipated. The 3 days of clear liquids only I thought I would claw someones eyes out, lol, but it was over fast enough. Now that I am post op, I am drinking a variety of shakes. On this forum, under diet and nutrition, protien shakes, there are some forums about protien shakes and where to buy 'samples' I bought about 100+ different samples, and each day I have 2 different ones. I have a notebook I write down the name of each sample, and make notes about it. When I am done with all the samples, I will go back and review all of my notes and then order the powders I think taste best. I am doing it this way because I have read a lot of people who go and buy tubs of protein powders (which cost 40 to 60 each) and then don't like them. When I was on clear liquids immediately after surgery, I drank Isopure premixed drinks. They are interesting. My best way to describe them is they taste like bitter koolaide at first, and the after taste is like skim milk. They were not gross, they just weren't incredibly good, lol. They were 40 grams of protien each though. The main thing I focused on after surgery was getting my liquids in. I didn't want to get dehydrated, and yes, it was tough being sure I drank 64 oz of liquid a day. You can only sip at first. I am not quite 1 month out now, and can drink fairly normally again, but I certainly can't gulp anything down. Message me anytime with any questions! I am so glad I can be a resource and help!   10. 18 years ago, I had a RNY. I lost 124 lbs. I kept most of it off until the last 3 years when I gained about 45 pounds. I have been successful in losing weight that additional weight and am back with 5 pounds of my lowest weight! I did not have plastic surgery 18 years ago and it's my biggest regret. Now that I am stable in weight, I'm looking at plastic surgery. I've talked to 2 Docs. And I'm confused and torn. Doc#1 says Fleur. He says that I don't have much back skin/fat. He can pull the skin forward and tighten it. I have a pronounced belly that hangs quite low and I get heat rashes/yeast infections frequently. Doc#1 says that Fleur should be a great solution. He said it will also take care of my sagging mons. (Which I really want gone!) He will also tighten my abs after nearly 50 years of weight gain and loss. Doc#2 says to do a panniculectomy and lipo around the sides. She feels this is the best option as my frame is not necessarily curvy and she could not be sure of getting a flatter tummy. Let's assume, this is all out of pocket cost. I like both Docs. Which would you choose and why? I could use some insight and advice! Thanks
  11. So I just got back from my Dr. visit. Leave it to me to pick a PCM that doesn't recommend the lap band surgery. My weight today was 210, which is good in terms of being closer to having insurance approve my surgery. I go back in the morning for all of my lab work to make sure there isn't an underlying issue with my health for the weight gain (i know there isn't) and he recommends that I try medication such as amphetamines for weight loss before I go the surgery route, but said when I return to him in two weeks, If I still don't want the medication and would like to be referred to the surgeon that he would do so for me. Medication..amphetamines..for what? So I can be addicted to those instead of food? No thanks! My father is an addict and I am not taking any chances! So when I go back in two weeks, I will get a referral to a surgeon and hopefully be approved for this! In a way (i know its a horrible way to think) I kinda hope that when my labs come back, I have some kind of co-morbidy that will make me eligible for the surgery right off hand without the hassle. My entire family is obese, with a few members that are morbidly obese.. I NEED this surgery. I don't want to be morbidly obese as well

    Champix without putting on weight

    For me, I substituted snacking for lack of smoking (since I normally use smoking to keep from snacking), and that caused my weight gain. The only side effect I got from Chantix was the weird nightmares. I had them every night. It wasn't enough to make me stop taking it, but the weight gain was. When I get to goal, I'll dedicate myself to exercising to counter act it. Right now, I'm exercising to lose weight, not counteract food.

Nuts are pretty calorie-dense and can cause weight gain if you eat a lot of them, but 1 ounce of cashews is about 160 calories (could be more if they have added ingredients, e.g., honey-roasted) and have no more impact on your weight than 160 calories from any other food. Are you including that in your 700 calories per day or is that in addition? Either way, you are under 1000 calories per day, which is low enough that you will continue to lose weight (especially if you're working out 60-90 minutes per day). Stalls are very common and normal. Weight loss isn't linear. Stick with your program and your weight loss will resume. I'm guessing that BMI is in error. I suspect the weight is meant to be 235 pounds and not 235 kg (518 pounds). While it's possible that she actually weighs 518 pounds, her goal weight of 150 kg (330 pounds) would be unusually high for a goal weight. Still, even at a weight of 235 pounds (BMI of 39), less than 1000 calories per day is well below TDEE.

    Will This Work?

    I was diagnosed with pcos a little over a year ago after noticing significant weight gain over the course of 4 months. Im nearly 300lbs today and im considering the sleeve as well. Ive heard lots of success with the sleeve and pcos. June 1st my insurance will be siruated and on the 3rd I will officially I have my first appointment. =)

    How many calories are you eating?

    Oh please, I know that my friends and family talked about my weight gain behind my back. I used to be much thinner and gained some of the weight rapidly. I gained 50 pounds in 1 year during the year between losing my mom and then my dad 13 months later. That was 2 years ago. It was the most stressful and sad time of my life and I ate whatever was easiest to grab. I don't even remember eating that much. But I know that the family was buzzing about me. So-called friends too. When I confronted some of them, they didn't deny it. They said, "But its because we're so worried about you and want you to take care of yourself and be healthy!". Yeah, right. I know it was idle gossip. Nothing we can do about it but show them up by getting thin. Wish they would all stop asking me how much I lost. Some even ask me why I'm losing so slowly. I really don't find that supportive. I did lose 50 pounds after all.
  16. For the dark green bowel movements, contact your primary doc. If you aren't eating a lot of leafy greens, then it could indicate excess bile - not saying that is what it is, just that you should discuss with your primary and let the doctor determine if it is something to be concerned about. And don't beat yourself. You have identified the problem with the weight gain, you know what to do - get back on plan. You are catching it early. And you always have support here.

    Strange question...

    acutally I am looking forward to getting stuck! The band is a tool.....tool that if you eat too much or the wrong kind of food has a consequence. That consequence is getting stuck or vomitting. I need a negative consequence like that. Obviously the consequence of weight gain when I eat certain foods is not enough. So although I do not aim for always getting stuck 'I do aim to feel something. You have to see if from my point of view. I had this surgery, put this foreign object in my body, paid this money, and I feel nothing. It was like I never had it. That is alot to go through for nothing. So I am ready to feel the stuck feeling. At least I know it is in there and I will have a consequence for my action if it hurts that much. I am not saying that it will solve or speed up my weight loss but let's call a spade a spade. I am feelling no restriction what so ever right now. Although I am sticking to no bread, no rice, no Pasta, no soda... I know myself...that will get old. If I could keep doing it I would not have needed the band in the first place. So down the road, when I am craving that bread, and I actually eat it, and it gets stuck and feels horrible...guess what I will think twice about eating the bread. It is the same principle for having an alcoholic take antabuse. You take it, you drink, you vomit. Now obviously the person taking it does not think...man I can not wait to take the medication, drink, and vomit. But obsiously they needed more consequences for their drinking than what they were experiencing. And just like anything I know there is a way around the band. I am not looking for it. I hope that clarified everything for you.

    3 Slips, No More Band.

    I would definitely let him remove the band. I would also move Heaven and Earth to try to revise to the sleeve. The things I've read about weight gain after band removal are horrifying. It doesn't even sound like "normal" weight gain. It sounds more like accelerated weight gain due to the body being so accustomed to such small amounts of food while banded.

    BCBS Insurance/attorney question

    @lisa1986. I am so excited to get out and try to engage in life. I know that this is only a tool but I have not had so much hope in a very long time. I checked out of the hospital and my blood pressure had already changed back to the level I had prior to my doctor prescribed drug induced weight gain. This is game changer!     Exercising...but Gaining?? Please Help!!

    It takes a long time to put on muscle weight, and doing cardio doesn't do alot of muscle building. Cardio burns calories and is healthy in other ways but that's not where your weight gain is coming from. I have a trainer who's taught me alot about working out, but the main thing is the motivation of meeting with her. I cant really afford it right now, so i'm back to walking mostly, but i do it with a friend and my dog so it's harder to get out of when i don't feel like it. I heard that one of the makers of the band (Allergan) just worked out a deal for patients with Curves and some sort of online tracking and after program with Lindora. I don't know if it's only for new patients but check it out on the Weight Loss Channel- there's a video about it there. There are tons of fun workout dvds you can do from home too if you need ideas and fun workouts
  21. Hi all! I'm at 6 months down and I'm discouraged by the sagging tummy. I know, the weight loss is most important, but I do the Vitamins, tea, creams and exercise, it isn't shrinking in like it used to. Before I put on the massive weight gain, I used to have a flat belly at this numbered weight before, now I have a sagging belly What are some things people are doing to maintain a tighter body during weight loss? Everything else is going in perfectly, my neck, arms and legs. Just my stomach and thighs are kinda bumming me out.

    WHAAA I GAINED 10lbs

    Hmmm, I was waiting for a birth control forum. Your lucky you can use the patch because they tell me I am too FAT... boo hoo. I have been on the depo shot for the last 9 years or so and finally just got off of it last week. I somehow missed the point that it can cause hair loss and weight gain... New evidence shows that it definitely depletes the bone density too so we all decided it was time to try something new. For the moment I am using the pill (evidently one of the lower dose ones). I am trying to decide what long term device I want is s.a. an IUD or the Nuvaring. In the meantime I am hoping by getting off of depo maybe it will be easier to LOSE weight and GROW hair. I am taking really good chewable vitamins and calcium now sooooo.... Kristie, I'm sure you must feel like you took a big step backwards but it will settle out hopefully and come off. I would have been frustrated too. I get irritated when I stay at a plateu for more than a week or two. And God forbid I gain a pound or two back. I just ignore the bad scale reading and hope for a better one the following week. I ALWAYS think I am pigging out and NEVER think I have actually had a loss so it makes a nice surprise when the scale does show a loss. Anyway any insights would be great regarding anything about birth control. Teresa

    Calling tattoed bandsters!

    I have a gothic fairey on my left upper arm~I love her sooooo much!! Shes sorta my alter ego~ I have a phoenix on my right calf, coming out of flames and a black dream catcher on my chest~ I wanna get the one on my chest covered up...but I am gonna wait till Im closer to goal weight. I think the amount of "damage" done to a tat depends on where it is, how badly the skin is affected by the weight gain and weight loss. I got my fairey when I was 50 pounds heavier, and so far so good, shes holding up!!!
  24. Hi everyone! I have recently decided to make a change in my life. I just got married and I was looking back on wedding pictures and in a sense it kind of upset me. I have struggled with my weight my whole life. Needless to say I have tried everything. I was not the weight I wanted to be on my wedding day I am 20 years old with a BMI of 45 and a weight of 300. I have recently made the decision to go ahead and talk to someone about the procedure. My husband and I discussed what I had researched and we both think it would change my life for the better! I need all and any advice I can get. Where do I begin? Who do I talk to? I also have a heart condition which was brought on by my sufficient weight gain. I played rugby in high school and even conditioning 4 days a week I was still heavier set. My husband and I would love to start a family in about 3 years after I finish my degree and being this weight it's just not a possibility. Any knowledge would help tremendously! I really appreciate it and look forward to hearing from you!

    Question I Should Know The Answer To!

    Like you said - it helps keep you hydrated, you aren't taking in as much food and food contains Water so you need to get it from the water. 2 it does help you stay full longer. 3. it helps flush salt from your body, you may not eat a lot, but it doesn't take much to cause water weight gain. The water helps delute the salt and your kidneys flush it out. I have also heard that it helps up your metabolism, but that wasn't from a doctor so I am not so sure I believe it.
