Realistic weight loss
Jess55 replied to skinnybitchtobe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It will slow down. I'm not sure what you weighed at surgery or what you weigh now, on my phone so I'm not sure if your goal is realistic or not. But a lot of people end up plateauing sometime during the first six weeks due to healing. I plateaued weeks 2-5, my weight loss average right now is like 1 lb per week. I've increased my activity so once my body gets used to it, I hope it will pick up. But realistically the average persons weight loss is 1-2 lb per week. If you think about it sometimes slower is better because it can give your skin time to adjust -
I'm a week and a day post op and I have only lost 13 bounds all together I feel kind of depressed about that because I think I should have lost more weight than that. Ant feed back???

Depression

The first 4-6 weeks after surgery are for healing, not losing. Most don't loose during this time, some even gain, so if you lost 13 pounds you're doing great. Put the scale away for the next month and concentrate on following the post op diet, making smart food choices, and healing. Then once you're back on normal food and all healed up you can start worrying about weight loss. -
So... I have had about 4 NSVs in the last week.... Last night I went to the Grand Lux Cafe.. When we were taken to our BOOTH, I just slid right in and my tummy didn't touch the table!!!! (I almost cried!! My best friend was smiling so hard I thought she was gonna have a coronary!!) On Saturday, I was sitting on my sofa and without thinking and much effort.... I crossed my legs!!!!! Comfortably!!! My bariatric center has a yearly celebration of life dinner/dance.. It's tomorrow.. and I haven't been able to wear heels for 2/3 years (and I have over 20 pairs).... anyway, I was like..let me just try these on and see if I can walk in them... Well, I tried on a pair of black 2 inch, brown 3 inch, silver and a few others... I walked around in them for a while without pain, stumbling or anything!!!! Finally, due to a back injury and left side nerve damage, I've walked w/ a very noticeable limp... I happened to look at myself walking down the hall at school today... and it's almost gone!!! This is the best NSV I've had to date!!!! Stay encouraged guys and appreciate every step of this journey to wellness, wholeness and the revelation of a new and improved you!!!

I'm not following. You've had three fills that were 1cc each, you have the 10cc (VG) band, but you only have 1cc left to play with? Do you mean 10cm (4cc) band, or do you really have a 10cc band? If you have a 10cc band, there's still lots of room for adjustment. If you have a 10cm band, do you *feel* restriction? Also, as you get tighter & tighter, it will no longer take a full cc to make a difference, and you could feel a 0.2cc adjustment now more than a 1.5cc adjustment earlier.

I noticed the swim-shirt trend while shopping a few weeks ago. Lands End has swim shirts that look pretty nice. Seems like a good option when snorkeling, for cool-weather swimming, or for sun protection at the beach (I get a terrible itchy rash from sun exposure that can last two weeks).

Hi Angela, First I want to wish you good luck tomorrow, we were all nervous the night before, not sure I even slept a wink that night just worrying about everything I thought there was to worry about. I don't care what hospital you go to, the nurses do their best to calm you down before surgery and the drugs take care of the rest. Before you know it you will be in recovery with another team of awesome nurses. The first few weeks I got to tell you as far as eating goes, you pretty much don't! You are on liquids and jello's and puddings and anything that slides down easy. I was banded on July 29th and I am in the mushy phase of the diet. It was heaven eating a scrambled egg. They just want to make sure you heal correctly before you start eating "normal" foods. I can tell you one thing, when I saw the scale going down instead of up for a change, I was excited and as long as I am not hungry I don't care that I was just drinking Protein shakes and broth and eating Jello and puddings. The gas wasn't too bad for me, some people are worse than others. Get some gas x strips to use, they really help. Keep walking and moving, the gas will go away. I have lost about a pound a day since I was banded, but I am sure once I start eating normal foods that loss will slow down....it is just amazing that a 1/2 cup of food now makes me full! This is the best thing I have ever done. Good luck tomorrow, don't worry, you are going to be fine.....and when you get home, just take one day at a time.......you will succeed.:tongue_smilie: Carol

I am six weeks out and just last week my port pain starting subsiding (thank God) it was so bad for a while I had a CT done because I thought something was seriously wrong!!! I think I was being hypersensitive!! I had my first fill on this past Monday and things are going okay for me…I’m hesitant on going out of my comfort zone with eating though.

CHEERS JULY 26TH!! Can you believe that it was only 2.5 weeks ago...feels like ages to me. I go in next week for my first fill - my doc does it at 4 weeks. I will ask then - but definitely I feel like it was worse yesterday and today than it has been. And you are right, no one told me it would hurt...

I was banded on May 31st and lost 14 lbs the first week. Since then, I've lost 16 more lbs. At first, I started watching what I was eating and taking a lot of protein, but now I feel so discouraged. Fall semester for school started in August and since then, I have not been eating like I should. I have 4cc's and I feel like I can eat normal again. It's the worst feeling in the world because I look in the mirror and feel horrible about myself. I'm 12 hours away from my doctor and nutritionist, and phone consultations are not motivating or helpful. Does anyone know of a diet plan that can get me back on track? I'm thinking of finding a doctor close to my school so that I can get a fill and get back on track. I started INSANITY a week ago, and I've been sticking to it. I'm only 20 years old, and this has just been really difficult to deal with. I need motivation again. Thank you

Moving onto foods to fast? Please share your post op phases.
ShrinkingButtercup replied to Faithoftheheart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I recently got my stages and it completely skips a liquid phase. (Except the one night in the hospital). Then it goes right to two weeks of pureed foods. After that? Solids. Every plan is as different as the surgeon. I trust my surgeon. Also, I trust my ability to listen to my body and know what to do if the plan doesn't quite work. (Call my surgeon's office in a flailing panic. Kidding!) -
Was just in for a cleaning last week....my teeth are perfect. Clean bill of dental health. You do need to take your vitamins, and you do need to be extra careful to brush more often because you're eating more often. I do recommend that anyone going into weight loss surgery get a dental checkup before surgery and get any issues repaired and resolved beforehand. Dental infections can be dangerous and you don't need the extra stress.

Am 1 week post op & I have had no problems with whatever anyone eats, cooks, grills, crunches, etc in front of me...EXCEPT popcorn. My kids make it every night & it smells so darn good. I certainly will not try to indulge for a very, very long time, but from those with experience...will I be able to eat it again someday? Or do the kernels tend to irritate the sleeve?

I had to do 2 weeks of protein shakes, and yes, the first 3 days were horrible. I felt like I had the flu. Headaches, body aches, tired. BUT, by day 4 I felt a whole lot better and made it through the rest of the pre-op with no problems. Just be sure to drink lots of water. It will help. Hang in there, it will get better!

What is the best compliment you have heard lately?
TheGh0st replied to Boo Boo Kitty's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
At my husband's company Christmas get together last year one of his co-workers asked my DH's permission to tell me how "fine" I was looking. It meant even more to me to think he felt he might need permission, like my DH could get jealous or something. Just wait until this year's Christmas get together after my PS next week! -
weight loss after vsg
Shan replied to italianmama41's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think there is a normal or not normal for VSG. Everybody varies. I've found that if you just keep doing the right things through the stall...your time will come. I'll have weeks where I don't lose a thing, but when I look back over the months I have consistently lost between 10 to12 pounds each month after the first month (20lbs the first month). Sometimes it's frustrating to see that some people lose 100 pounds in 4 months, but you know what...this is me. Gotta say...I'm QUITE pleased with my 67 pound loss! I've gone from a size 20 pants and 18/20 shirts from Lane Bryant to a size 8 or 10 depending on the fabric pants and medium or large shirts depending on the cut from Old Navy. If you do what you're supposed to do...it will happen. It might not be as quickly (or as slowly) as someone else, but you will be successful! Chin up. -
Banded yesterday and I'm so bored...
btrieger replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not the surgery. It's the Texas summer. My niece is down from Boston for the week and we are stuck in the house bored because it is too damn hot to go out. -

Full time student, will surgery affect study ability?
tiffnie posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a full time nursing student set to graduate in January 2011. I am having my surgery this December, thankfully a few days after my exit exam. However I am a little concerned because I am scheduled to take the NCLEX exam in Feb or March of next year, and I remember being told by my Kaiser Options leader that people are usually a little fuzzy headed for a couple months post op due to the severe calorie restriction, etc. Can anyone give me a little info about their experiences with this? Also, I am nervous about some of the other complications like dumping, etc that I have been told about. I will have about 1 week to recover after surgery at home, then will be headed back to the classroom a few days a week for a couple weeks of NCLEX prep. and am curious about how I'll feel sitting in a class for hours at a time so soon after surgery. I would appreciate any insight to ease my mind a little, or at least let me know what to expect so I can be prepared Thanks! -

Kimber Lilly - To me it helped to stay on Disney property, Not a disney hotel, but one close. There is a Hilton, Wyndham palce that is nice. I stayed there for a week with my daughter. Great pool and walk right across the street. We drove from IL. I drove straight through each way. My daugter slept while I drove at night and I took my laptop so she could watch movies in the back. I took lots of food and drinkings with us. I even have a cooler back pack we used for the day at Disney with ice packs. This really did save a lot of money( even just on bottles of Water and snacks). If you are going to go to disney for more then two days I would go on line a pre buy your multi day passes you will save a little bit of money doing that. Also if you go to sea World when you go in go right to the left. You can have your photo taken and added to your ticket and you will get a second day for free. You will also be able to avoid parking by taking the disney shuttle. There are tons of places to eat right around the hotels the should not be more then a 10 cab ride - lots of places for kids. Hope this helps, also if you travel at all and have any "Hotel Points" you can use for at least one night that helps as well. also check the hotel rates everywhere. like - travelnow.com, expedia.com, and the hotel's website. Also make sure you call as you never know where you will find the best rate. Also of course try to avoid the "Hot Dates" when the rates are really high. One other tip if you ave a daughter and plan to eat in Cinderella's Castle for lunch call now and make your reservations. When we got there they could give me one in two weeks. I laughed walked away and waited for another lady and thank god someone did not show up and she got us in. It was great cause Cinderella was there and my daughter got her picture taken and all that fun stuff. Good luck and have a great time.

4 Weeks post op!! Horrible pain in my left rib area :(
divajksn replied to MommyTawnie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi...I am definitely no expert as I am only 11 days post op. But, do you think maybe you moved to solids to quickly? I know every Dr. seems to vary slightly but I haven't heard of advancing to solids at only two weeks out. I am on full liquids until day 29 and then it's mushies/pureeded foods and then on to solids. Just a thought...again I am new also, but just thought I would add that maybe it's to soon for solids. All the best to you. Davida -
I lost 28 lbs in the first 3 weeks and now all my pants are falling off.

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. In fact you may be getting near the end of it. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy! (Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)
