  1. Hey guys, im about 9 days post op VSG. Surgery date was 6/28/22. Ive been on the soft liquids for about a week now, and have lost 25 pounds already. I know its recommended to wait two weeks before moving onto soft foods/pureeds, but literally all i want is just a little bit, even a small soft food meal like some canned tuna to satisfy my urge to have something besides liquids. Is it alright to have even just a small soft meal to satisfy myself or is it too early? This stage is getting to my head a little bit but otherwise i honestly feel great. I've been going exactly by the book so far and what im really craving is a small bit of canned tuna honestly. Everything ive tried in the soft liquid phase has been without any issues whatsoever.     Worried about eating

    Welcome. As others above have said, said there are a lot of variations in plans. Mine also was two week stages. A good thing to remember is if you move to a next stage & find it a struggle just go back to the previous stage for a few days. We all heal at different rates & sometimes you need a little longer than what is suggested by your plan & that’s fine. Just do what works best for you. When you can eat solid food think soft like slow cooked meat based soups, stews/casseroles, etc. so the meat & vegetables are soft & ‘fall off the bone’ tender. I found mince based dishes easiest to begin. And ensure you have sauces or gravies to keep your meat moist & easy to swallow.

    2 Weeks Post op

    I was allowed rolled oats in purée but the instant version which is more processed. I made it on lots of milk & a serve lasted me days. I was also allowed scrambled eggs. Again thinned with extra milk. Think almost run off a spoon not plop/dollop thickness. The first few weeks can be challenging because your tummy can be sensitive & fussy. Some people experience temporary intolerances like to milk (try lactose free) too. Sometime you can eat something one day but the next day it’s no way. Plus your senses of taste & smell can go haywire temporarily. So things you enjoyed before taste or smell awful. I found soup easiest. Also boiled eggs mashed with Mayo & a high protein yoghurt. I tried puréeing lots of meats thinning them with gravies, stock, milk, ricotta, Mayo, etc. Personally, I found puréed tinned fish disgusting but chicken thigh meat with gravy was great. It took a few tries (& thrown out meals) to find out what my tummy & taste buds enjoyed.
  5. I second the Rotisserie chicken from the grocery store. If your grocery store has a seafood counter and will cook your seafood for free, baked salmon with a salt-free seasoning is terrific. Can be purchased over the weekend and divided for the week. Add some microwaveable steamed veggies. Baby food containers are perfect for our portion sizes. You can buy them online (they are made for people who want to make and store their own baby food).

    I also only have 1 week off, I’m hoping I can do some days working from home. Who will be outpatient? I am and I’m nervous about it.

    Hi, I am absolutely doing stuff!! Probably too much! I am keeping my calories at 1400 a day, working out, I just finished a 12 week Bariatric Lifestyle Coach (BariTale Coaching) and just signed up with Bariatric Nutritionist for a 12 week “how to eat successfully after surgery” program (Bariatric food Prep). I bought some new pajamas for the hospital, some glass baby food jars and some tiny fancy espresso cutlery this week. 😂 I’ve lost over 30 lbs already (with help from Lomaira Rx) and was given the “easier” pre-op diet which seems super easy and manageable. Not a liquid diet. I got the time off finally in and approved today at work. Just going to rinse and repeat until surgery day!!!

    Over 40 AND BMI over 50 - need inspo!

    I was 49 when I had my VSG and had a BMI of 50.7. Three years later at 52 my BMI is now 24.6. Life could not be any better! I’m happy, healthy, and active. Shopping is delightful! I could not have made a better decision for myself, my only regret is not doing it sooner.

    Yes, with my BMI level and plan, I only have to do the 2 weeks pre-op diet and it consists of consuming 5 to 6 protein drinks per day. Each shake must fall within this range: 15 grams protein minimum, 5-15 grams carbohydrates, and to a max of 200 calories. 6 to 8 cups of water. I personally drink over 100 ounces of water a day so this is super easy for me. I am allowed an unlimited amount of SF jello, SF popsicles (not no sugar added), broth ( broth, bouillon, strained) and those can count towards my water intake. I have been testing several different shake recipes and am prepared to go onto the test liquid diet for one week. I wanted to lose 30 pounds before my surgery and I have "released" (trying not to use the lost because then my mind wants to find it) - so I have released 16 pounds so far. I'm hoping this will jump-start moving those last pounds prior. I will post here and tell you how the test is going

    People talk about stalls, the famous week 3 stall, then the 3 week stall. I actually am one of the few people that never saw a stall. My secret was being too large to weigh on home scales. For about the first year I could only weigh at my surgeon's office at monthly follow-ups. So, when your weigh-ins are a month apart, you don't see stalls. I can't express what a joy this was. I was never tempted to change anything in response to a stall. I just stayed with my program. My surgeon was never overly concerned with my weight loss. He asked how I was doing on the plan, how I felt, did I have any concerns. Weight never came up unless I brought it up. He was a cool Doc. Once I was able to weigh at home, I did it for a couple weeks, several times a day. Then I abandoned the whole concept and went back to just weighing at follow-ups. Who needs the angst? Even now, all these years later, I don't weigh at home, but only at my annual physicals at the Doctor's. One does not need a scale for success at WLS. Just trust your plan. My plan was also pretty straightforward. I didn't count calories, nor much of anything else. I counted meals of which there were 3 per day. I counted protein of where there were 3-4 oz each meal. That was basically my plan. That is still basically my plan. Good luck, Tek

    How to cheat

    I was never faced with a multi course tasting menu until I was well into living with Gastric Bypass long-term. Pre-op it never appealed as my family was about volume over quality. I've since faced down the multi-course tasting menu with style and aplomb, generally by not worrying about my rules. No matter what happened volume would sooner or later become an issue. Sipping during meals has always been something I was more than willing to do. I usually took a taste of most courses unless it simply did not appeal. Unless a course was just the bees knees I didn't take more than two or three bites, I'm not gonna waste that all important space on something that was not worthy of it. There was usually one or two courses that were just that good to merit in depth exploration. Often it came down to "Let's make a deal"... Would you like to finish this course, or wait for the next course which has a cream sauce your sure to love, or this course that has lobster just the way you love it, or this later mystery dish later that will be something new? At any rate, we all have our approaches and our deals with ourselves and the devil. I just don't dance with the devil that often. Good luck, Tek

    How to cheat

    I'm here to tell you all how to cheat Not that you need to know this. I had a family dinner last weekend in a fancy restaurant that only does a 7 course set tasting menu. I have panicked for weeks about this because none of my family know I've had surgery and I don't want them to (long story featuring lifelong judgementalness, LOL - I know that's not an actual word). I had hatched all sorts of plans where I hid food under other overhanging food, dropped it on the floor, and put it onto other people's plates when they weren't looking. Anyway - turns out I worried for no reason - all you have to do to cheat on your pouch is to reverse the rules you were given. So - if you drink before, during and immediately after a meal, and start with carbs and finish with protein (and leave some of that if you need to) you can virtually clear 7 small plates. Served me very well on Saturday night. I hope not to need that wisdom again for some considerable time.

    That is really cutting it tight, but I understand why. I plan on taking a week and a few days. Thankfully I work for family and my job itself is a desk job so my doctor said she didn't think it would be a big deal if I decided to go back sooner. I expect out energy levels will be pretty low.     I’m nervous, but I wish it was sooner rather than later. I’m an educator and I was only able to get it scheduled 1 week before I have to go back to work! So I’ll only have 1 week off. Is anyone here worried about going back to work? Or are you guys blessed with staying home?

    Stalls and slow losing! Hoooo boy, I get so angry with my body because there are people who had surgery around the same time I did and who've easily lost double what I have. It's all about working the process though and every pound is a victory, no matter how slowly it comes off. You might need to speak to a dietician; I did after a massive stall and now I'm heading in the right direction again; turns out I was in malnutrition and starving myself. Your body needs fuel.

    August 2nd surgery buddy here! Have you seen what your "liquid diet" consists of from your team yet? I've talked with a few others on here and noticed mine is a little more forgiving. I decided to do a test run this week and I'm 3 days in. I honestly feel good. I actually find it hard to get everything in with all the liquids. I occasionally feel pretty tired but then not long after I get a burst of energy and take advantage of it when I can.
  18. Such a weird question, but I’m super bothered by this! I’m 6 weeks post op RNY. From immediately after surgery I have one armpit especially, sometimes both with horrible body odor!! I had switched off heavy deodorant probably 5 or so years ago and only use natural. I could do CrossFit and no worries. Now I can’t even sleep through the night without waking up smelling like I’ve ran a marathon! What’s the deal??? Anyone else with this? Is it anesthesia, burning fat off or what? I want it to go away and be not smelly like before…but I’ll take the lost pounds and just reapply for every few hours if I have to lol

    Pain on right side?

    Hi, I have the same pain it’s mostly around the biggest incision (right side) under the rib cage, but it only appears when I’m sleeping on my side or bending to much on my stomach when seating like I want to pick up something from ground, i started to feel this pain from like a week ago when I started to sleep on my side, I don’t know if it’s normal 20 days has passed from sleeve surgery, is this normal? How long does it take to go away?

  21. Worrying is a waste of time. Try not to do it. You can loose a lot of sleep whilst worrying. Nobody likes doing the Pre Op diet, Its a form of cruelty that goes on and on. If you want the surgery you will have to do it, especially as you have the fatty liver. My time in purgatory lasted 3 weeks, I wanted the surgery so badly, I slipped once and had to cross my fingers behind my back that he didn't open me up and say he couldn't do the surgery.   22. I seriously doubt they will say anything about your gain unless they specifically told you not to gain? Our weights fluctuate and they know that. My pre op diet wasn’t bad. I was allowed 2 shakes and then a lean protein low carb dinner (meat and veggies). Plus we had free foods like jello and pickles we could have if we just had to eat something. If I remember correctly we could chose between shakes and yogurt. And we were allowed to have broth. I didn’t love it but I wasn’t starving at all. Even if your is more strict because of your liver you just gotta keep your eye on the prize. I know I could do anything for a week or two in order to change my life for the better. And during that diet, if it gets a little touch check out the thread called “weirdest non scale victories” and see some of the changes you have to look forward to post surgery. Also, whenever you want to eat, hop on here and get talking. We are here to help you through it.

    Oh man, I'm so jealous of your progress!!! I lost 30 pounds in the first 2 weeks. Then I hit a 2 week stall and have lost much slower after that. In the last 5 weeks, I've lost 13 pounds. I lost weight faster when I did keto, so this has been frustrating. But congrats on your numbers!!!!

    I lost 30 pounds in the first 2 weeks. Then I hit a 2 week stall and have lost much slower after that. In the last 5 weeks, I've lost 13 pounds. I'm not one of the lucky ones that started losing quickly again after a stall, but I DO still lose. Just slower. But it sounds like you're in a stall. Try changing up what you eat or your exercising. I added extra exercise and changed up what I do, and that broke the stall. Good luck!!

    Every team and their plans differ so much you will get 100 different answers here. Mine was 2 weeks each phase. 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks pureed, 2 weeks super soft foods and then on to solid foods and slowly introducing yourself back into a normal balanced diet. I would just follow the directions of your team, if you struggle when you get to a particular stage reach out to them for help/guidance.
