Hello ... I think I am just looking for some encouragement as I have just begun the process of deciding on Lap-Band. I have my innitial all day appointment with a nutritionist and psychologist next Thursday. I was wondering at what point they decide if you are a candidate for the proceedure. I am having it done @ Lahey Hospital in Burlington, MA. Has anyone out there had experience with them? I am just on the cusp on qualifying ... I am hoping that they do not turn me down. I an 58 years old and am so ready to do this and watch me be able to enjoy so many things I have been passing by because of my embarassing weight. Any words of wisdom out there ???

    I'm Back!

I've been away from the Bariatric Pal site for a few months. Just wanted to shout out to all the friends I've made here on the site and say, I'm back! I lost my sister in early September 2015, after a long battle with asbestos-related illness, obesity, diabetes, and congestive heart failure. Despite it being a blessing that she is no longer suffering, I miss her terribly and still fight some depression from the loss of my last sister (my other sister, who was also obese, died unexpectedly at age 59). Her conditions were a main driving force in my decision to get the Gastric Sleeve to bring my weight down. While I haven't made progress in months on my weight in pounds, I have lost more inches than anything, but am happy to say I haven't gained any back either. I've gone from a size 22W-24W pants down to a 12-14 Petite in women's slacks and jeans, and I have to wear a belt to keep the 14-Petites jeans up!. I can't believe how good it feels to be able to wear jeans again! My shirt sizes have shrunk from a MEN'S 2X-3X (depending on the cut of the shirt), to a MISSES Large. My health has improved tremendously and spent part of Fall 2015 shooting basketball hoops with my oldest son, without running out of breath. During the winter, I've cut and split wood logs for our fireplace with no physical difficulties. While I still have a lot of pain in my leg and ankle (from massive injury in 2013, which required plates and screws to hold things together), it has eased up with the loss of excessive weight. I think once the cold weather turns warmer, my weight loss will pick back up as I'm able to get out and walk my dog. Oh yes, I adopted a new four-legged friend, and she will be accompanying me on my long walks this Spring and Summer. I hope all of you are doing well on your weight loss goals. Best wishes to all! Terry

    Exercise Anyone

Except you aren't taking into consideration the decreased metabolism from losing weight. When your body has to start burning stored energy for fuel, you metabolism slows. So your basal metabolic rate will decrease as a self-preservation mechanism. That's why it takes some trial and error to strike the right balance. If you go too low on calories or too high on exercise, your body will start hanging onto every single bit of fat as long as it can. So you have to try to find a calorie range where you can sustain your level of activity and still continue losing weight steadily. That's why people who are stalled in their weight loss are often encouraged to consume MORE calories to lose weight. They need to consume enough calories to convince the body it's not starving.

    Hi. Just had surgery last Tuesday, March 20,2007, in Overland Park, Kansas. I have lost about 15 lbs already. I'm feeling fine, just a little sore and a little weak. Dr Nigro did my surgery. I'm really excited about the future. I weighted in at 301 on March 12. I have my 1st follow up on Wednesday, will be excited to see what I weight on their scales. Still don't have much desire to eat. Drinking enough is a problem, I have never been much of a drinker. I really am trying hard to drink up. ;

I really could use some advice

I personally would do it. I wish I could go to every college in the U.S. and tell them our stories. You are so young and understand what people your age are dealing with. My daughter is 16 and has PCOS, she has gained 50 pounds in the past year. She takes Karate twice a week and works out at the YMCA 2 days a week. I feel so bad for her because I know what it feels like to want to wear the clothes that are in style. My daughter is beautiful. (I will post pics of her). Anyways I would pay for the VSG for her at young age in a heart beat. Its sad to watch her loose her confidence. Im not telling you that this is the best choice for you. Its just a reason I would do it. BTW who cares if people know you lost weight this way. Its not like you are on crack or killed someone. People will judge regardless.

    Veterans...Thank You...Chime In

I don't consider myself a true veteran since I'm only 2.5 years out, but I'll respond since this website considers those with more than 1 year of bariatric surgery experience 'vets.' I maintain with the following phrases repeating themselves in the crevices of my brain: "Obesity isn't curable, ever. Obesity is incurable. Obesity can't be cured." Let me explain...while obesity can be placed into remission by achieving a normal weight, the formerly fat person's internal biochemistry will always favor fat storage. There's a reason so many bariatric surgery patients regain some or all of their lost weight: we can't ever eat like our naturally thin counterparts who can eat junk and stay at low body weights. The formerly fat person's body is in the weight-reduced state. A naturally thin woman who has been 130 lbs her entire adult life maintains far easier than a 130-lb woman who once weighed 300 lbs. The weight-reduced, formerly fat 130-lb woman's metabolic rate is slower than that of the naturally thin woman, burning on average 300 to 500 less calories daily even though both ladies have the same heights, weights, and body fat percentages. This is why formerly fat people are primed to regain. In essence, I'll always need to be vigilant. I exercise. I have no forbidden foods. I try to avoid the slippery slope of eating junk and crap because staying on track is easier than getting back on track. Good luck to everyone who fights the battle of the bulge. The battle is lifelong.
  7. @@KristenLe I really wonder about people being curious and what makes them curious. I don't have co-workers so I have never had to deal with that aspect of WLS. When I moved where I live now I moved here before surgery, so these people knew me as fat only. I had surgery started walking, got a dog and walked even more. I walked all the time in my apt complex, rainy days, freezing cold. With weights on, multiple times a day. None of the people that live here that have seen me drop weight "rapidly" have asked me a lot of questions about it. They just say "Looking good" "The hard work is paying off" I have literally lost a whole entire person in weight since I moved here, and no one questions it. Even the people that know me, and don't know I had surgery have never questioned it. My eating habits are totally different and my activity level while high before is through the roof now. People that are my friends on fitbit etc, see that I walk 25,000 steps a lot of days. My weight loss doesn't seem magical to people, they attribute it to a lifestyle change.

    Never Gets Old

This is my first fall/winter after wls in August. My weight loss started early this year. So this time last year I was the heaviest I've ever been, and now I'm over 120 pounds less than my highest. I'm experiencing the super-happy annoyance of having no warm clothes that fit me for the first time ever. For me, it was basically my experience since puberty started at 10 years old that I could pretty much expect to need a new coat and new wardrobe in general every winter. This year, my wardrobe consists of lots of cheap leggings, and layers of too-big hoodies. Even though this kinda sucks and worries me for financial reasons, I just can't feel in any way upset about it.
  9. Wow, your insurance is covering a revision when "you don't like your band". Most will only cover it if you have a complication. I don't have any little ones but I know I couldn't have lifted a 14 mth old (about 20 lbs, right?) the first week or so. In fact, my dr had a lifting limit of 20 lbs for the first 6 weeks. In fact, we kept our dog at some friends (a little, energetic one) for 4 days after getting home for fear she'd jump on my tummy. I would definitely have some help there for at least the first week. Then you should be able to do it alone. Good luck to you. I'm happy with my decision to revise. Oops, just noticed you wrote his weight on there. I would definitely get some help if he's over 20 lbs. I know he's walking but I also know how toddlers want their mommy's to pick them up often, especially when they're cranky!
  10. @@kayse At 286 lbs, I don't look good naked or in clothes - at least after surgery I have a chance of looking good in clothes! There's no point in worrying about sagging skin - concentrate on weight loss and being healthy! Good luck with your surgery and recovery!!!
  11. I have only been working with my weight loss clinic. I have not talked to my insurance, should I be contacting them?? Telling them what I'm doing?? I'm just confused, wls clinic says we take care of everything. I'm not getting warm fuzzing feeling with reading the posts on here. Please if you have any suggestion!!!
  12. Has your weight loss clinic confirmed that you have insurance coverage for your surgery? Have you checked to see if it is covered by your employer? You should be able to find this out from the web site of your insurance company and by logging in with your credentials. I have UHC and my employer goes through Optum. I contacted Optum as well as the insurance coordinator at my doctor's office. I received in writing the criteria they use to determine weight loss so there were no surprises. If your insurance company requires a medically supervised diet for a certain period of time, find out if the appointments have to be consecutive. The more you know up front, the less likely you are to have a surprise down the road. Good luck. It would be a shame to start the process and think you are close to find out you have a six month med sup diet or something else.

    Hbo Weight Of The Nation

I had a friend that had lapband surgery, lost only 40 pounds and gained it back. She is at the same weight she was pre surgery. I almost backed out of my surgery because I was afraid I would be like her. I made up my mind to do what doctor told me and I am a success. I just past my 2 year mark and have lost 94 pounds. This is a great tool but if not used properly, it does not work.
  15. Yes, I am doing exactly that. From Thanksgiving to today I have eaten what I wanted but sensibly, keeping track of my calories about 1/3 of the days. I didn't gain, but I also didn't deprive myself of the foods I enjoy. I also overindulged a handful of times. I don't feel guilty and as of today I am following my program, wanting to lose another 15 pounds. Back to basics and plenty of protein! I haven't entered the maintenance phase either. I did this on purpose. I'm not sure if it was a good idea or not. We will see in the coming weeks.
  16. Has anyone taken a month long break from active weight loss? Was it hard restarting the weight loss phase? I had major surgery the first week of December. The week prior I had to stop going to the Y due to Covid concerns. I admit I lost focus when it came to diet while recovering. I've increased my calories, especially carbs, more than I should have. But I didn't gain! I finally got the ok to start exercising again and I'm ready to focus on diet. Prior to surgery I was close to my goal weight but hadn't officially entered the maintenance phase. I'm curious if I can expect my weight loss to resume as prior to surgery or can I expect it to be more challenging since I have been in a 4 week self induced stall? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
  17. Whoohooo!!! I've been waiting for this for SO long! Ok, it might not be as big a deal as losing 100lb but I'll get to that milestone too, in time! It has felt like it's been forever that I've had to look at that number and say "I have over 100lb to lose...over 100lb!!" But NO MORE! I probably could have said it a while back if I hadn't been quite so ambitious in setting my goal weight, but if I had done so I think I would have felt I was cheating and would have known it wasn't really true. A target of 60kg (135lb) is quite ambitious but I have been there before. In fact, the first time I got UP to that weight I cried my eyes out and started this whole yoyo dieting that got me into this mess in the first place. I was 21 at the time and had a 2 year old daughter, so it wasn't even pregnancy that did it to me. At 20, with a 1 year old, I was only 54kg (120lb) but I don't want to get back there. I think, at 45, I would be too thin at that weight. I am only 5ft 3in, so 60kg is a BMI of 23, which is right smack inside the normal BMI range. OMG, I am starting to really believe that this can happen for me! :woot:

    Friends No More

I am sorry to hear that you lost someone you had a lot of fun with. If anyone found weight loss so easy, there wouldn't be so many "tools" aka surgeries, pills, etc.) for people to look into. She can just keep on eating her 4-6 tacos and you enjoy the pounds coming off girly. I am down almost 130.... lots to go but I am not looking behind me anymore Good luck to you

    Friends No More

Today I had lunch with a friend of mine...I met with her to give her a job..before we could even get to that part lunch fell apart...she suggested Taco Bell I said ok...knowing I would just have the small bowl of refried beans ( surgery was Sept 6th)....she asked how my progress was going and I said really well..and she said " it can't be that hard u barely eat anything and can sit around and lose weight"...she is a bigger gal who's mom had gastric bypass 8 years ago so I though her of all people would be supportive...I have a pretty sharp Italian temper and before i thought I said back to her..."I bust my ass 4 miles a day on my treadmill..yes ur right it does take much to fill me up but I still hafta watch what I eat and make sure it's the right foods...you were prob full 2 freaking tacos ago but choose to ignore it"...I got up and left...ok soo I do feel a little guilty abt snapping off on her like that...but I'm guessing this was a friendship that was not gonna last once i started losin weight and she did nothing for herself..such a shame we had tons of fun together

can't get all my protein and liquids in

I third that notion! Just keep up and do what your body allows you to. It will get better and easier with a week or so. Your motivation is coming soon when you realize your body can survive off of such few calories compared to how much you used to consume. The weight loss will be there soon too. Keep us posted and don't hesitate to ask for info!

    Bloated!

Think I may also be lactose intolerant. Glad you're feeling a little better. Can anyone tell me a legitimate website for protein, calorie amounts of food. I'm having difficulty trying to reach my 20 gms protein in only 1/2 servings. Is there a good list that anyone uses? Also how can I get a weight tracker like the ones I've seen in the Forum?

    3/29/09 New Weight Loss Trials

Searching through WLS information I've run across several procedures I'd never heard of (VSG, DS). I'm sure you've heard that they are already doing single incision LB procedures (in through the belly button). Recently, I've heard of some new trials and have run in to people online who are participating in them; like TOGA. The procedure is incisionless and is done by going down the throat with a tool that opens like a book (that has staples sticking out of the pages), vacuums stomach tissue into the crease of the book and then closes, this is repeated several times to create several 'folds' that make a pouch near the entrance to the stomach. See article and video HERE. Just this week on the news there were two stories on WL trials. The first is taking place at the hospital I'm going to in Pittsburgh, Allegheny General. The first woman in the trial previously had RNY surgery and it didn't work for her. The new procedure that she had is deep brain stimulation. They use a similar procedure already approved for controlling Parkinson's disease, turrets, seizure disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and Dystonia. The procedure is safer than the RNY surgery she already had. They insert electrode wires into the brain, which stimulates metabolism and decreases appetite. Small stimulators (similar to pacemakers) are placed under the skin and the doctor can continue to adjust it with a remote. She's now losing 2 pounds a week. You can watch the short news clip HERE. This week the Today Show had a piece on three new prescription weight loss drugs that are in the final phases of FDA approval. The FDA has tightened their requirements since Phen-fen was taken off the market, and these three drugs have been in prolonged human clinical trials. All three new drugs work on the brain to decrease appetite and increase metabolism, and all show good promise. They are combinations of drugs that are already on the market to treat other things; Wellbutrin (anti-depressant), Topomax (seizures), and part of the Phen-fen drug that is still on the market. If you want to view the Today Show piece click HERE. I'm certainly not waiting for these to come on the market, but I find these stories interesting. There's another good thing about the LB; it can be unfilled or removed if a miracle cure comes along. Keep dreaming!

    Post Op day 16

I have been doing really good. I went to the support group in Rancho Cucamonga and they really helped me. They really focused on getting enough protein and the 64 ounces of liquids. You can dehydrate and have problems. I also met a 34 year old lady who has lost 130 pounds in a little over a year. She followed a South Beach Diet type of plan. Lots of water and exercise. I want to follow in her footsteps. They also told me to make sure I am getting over 1000 calories a day or else I will go into starvation mode and you can't lose weight in starvation mode. I added pureed chili beans with cheese and that got me to 1000 yesterday. I am also focusing on my liquid intake. I am also going to start the South Beach diet on Saturday when I can have solids. I still have not weighed in,but was able to squeeze my butt into size 12 slacks!!! My 14's that were tight are not fitting me well anymore. I am looking for for non scale victorys. Today I have eaten/drank: Breakfast: 1 cup Gano Coffee (healthy coffee) with soy milk and carnation good start breakfast: 230 cal, 11 grams of protein Liquids: 20 ounces of vitamin water: 125 calories vitamins: 1 tbsp. of Glacial Milk liquid vitamins.
