So mad at myself for regain

I truly understand what you’re going through. It’s a terrible feeling to have enjoyed your years of weight loss after surgery and have to look in your closet at the smaller clothes that keeps moving farther and farther to the back of the closet. It’s been 8 years since my gastric sleeve surgery and I’ve gained 50lbs back. For the pass few years I’ve tried resetting my pouch as they say, that didn’t work. Going back to eating the way I was eating at the beginning of the program that didn’t last two weeks. I tried, I’ve been angry at myself, I’ve been depressed as heck.....I don’t dress up anymore. I use to dress up, do double takes in the mirror at how nice I looked before walking out the door just to go to the grocery store. How could I have done this to myself again. I don’t know if this will be a solution for you but thank God the intermittent fasting, that I have tried several time before is truly working well for me this time. I prepare meals to keep in the freezer, I keep plenty of bottle water near me. If hungry hits or tv commercials show food after food I grab a bottle of water drink drink drink. Losing regained weight seems worse than the first time. But hang in there one day you will surprise yourself.

    Sleeve Narrowing

I was converted to RNY from VSG for structural (and other) reasons too. My surgeon just said we were doing bypass so I’m not sure if there any specific differences between that and what you will have done. It’s completely possible to maintain (and even gain) weight after your revision. The malnutrition aspect comes with how long of a bypassed Roux (or alimentary) limb will be. Your surgeon may choose to make that length shorter to prevent excess weight loss, but that’s a plan you will come up with together. Below are links for both the steps of a gastric bypass and info on just the gastrojejunostomy. Hope that helps ❤️ https://www.laparoscopic.md/bypass/surgery https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK560493/

    Trash Article- Venting.

I’m watching the documentary Diet Fiction on Prime at the moment. I’m about 1/3 of the way though it & I’ve been agreeing with a lot of what they’ve said. They’ve criticised the weight loss industry too which has done nothing to counteract the obesity problem but make money. So far it seems to be a bit focussed on plant based diets & anti meat. They’ve sort of ignored portion sizes which I think is a huge issue as many obese people (as we know) eat portions that are two, three & four sizes what they should. Said if you eat a balanced diet you shouldn’t need vitamins or supplements unless you have a medical need. Said popular diets like keto, paleo, etc. are short term only & could have side effects like keto affecting insulin levels. Spoke about how diet alone won’t help you lose & keep off large amounts of weight. Interested to see where they go next.
  4. Gosh, I forgot about this site! So nice to go back and follow everyone. As per the beginning of my journey, things continue to not go very well and I am fighting to stop losing weight. I have had my MiniMizer removed as it had slipped and also my gall bladder removed. My surgery anniversary will be on the 18th, so nearly a year out 158 pounds down. I really struggle with digestion issues including constant diarrhoea and really poor absorption. Good news is that food aversion (taste and small) has pretty much gone. But now I eat, it overstimulates my intestines causing the above, which means continued weight loss. I have been on a feeding tube for a while and am currently talking to surgeons about reversal. Congrats to all of you with your upcoming ‘surgiversaries’! Much Love, Laura
  5. Hi Shanto. My surgerversary was yesterday. I was 266 at surgery and now 180. I am 5’7” with a goal of 155. So 25 pounds to go as well. I too am so glad I was able to have my surgery before COVID hit. I know I need to increase my exercise to keep my weight loss going.
  6. So it’s been a year (or close to it) guys! And what a year it has been! Who would have thought so shortly after our surgeries COVID would explode and effect all of our lives! I am so very grateful I was able to get this surgery before everything got shut down though in some ways it was hard to get support that I probably could have used. I also think I might have lost more weight if Covid didn’t happen, as I have been stuck home with a baby, toddler and young child with not much to do in the cold rainy months we experience here in Vancouver Canada. I am afraid if I hadn’t had the surgery though my weight may have gotten worst due to stress and boredom eating. I have lost 80lbs but I’m still 25 away from my goal. (I was 270lbs before surgery and now I’m 190lbs I’m 5’8 and would like to weigh 165lbs) I’m really hoping I continue to lose but weight is very slow to come off now. I’m trying to up my exercise to hopefully help keep the pounds coming off. I struggle with water intake which is another area of improvement. I love not having intense cravings anymore and to be able to stop after just a taste of chocolate or a sweet. I love that I can run and chase after my kids and take them sledding in the snow. I love that I can sit down on the floor and get back up no problem. I am sleeping better now and I feel a million times better about myself. My only lingering side effect is hair loss. My hair is constantly falling out and it’s super annoying. It’s regrowing but still a constant shed. anyway, where are my feb people at?! I’d love to read some updates to see how everyone is doing. ☺️

    Questions

The only things I used from my bag were: underwear (I couldn't stand to be commando even for 2 days) lip balm hand cream phone and charger It was even too big a hassle to get unhooked from everything to bother to brush my teeth. I brushed before I left home and then when I got home 31 hours later. I had french braided my hair so it wouldn't be an issue during my stay.
  9. I had this exact same thing happen. I started the process under regular commercial insurance. Then during the process I became disabled and switched to Medicare. Medicare covers weight loss surgery and picked right up without a hitch, not making me jump through any additional hoops.

Welcome and best of luck on your WLS journey. There is TONS of good information in these forums, from diets, to surgeries to vitamins, hair loss, plastic surgery, etc. Take time to browse through some of the discussion threads.
  11. I came across the following article this morning: https://www.cnet.com/health/why-its-so-hard-to-lose-weight/ Notice anything about the theme regarding the six reasons they gave? They all have to do with faulting the individual rather than digging deeper into potential metabolic or hormonal reasons one might be struggling with weight. I'm not saying that there are not folks who perhaps need to address their mindsets when it comes to health and long-term weight loss, but for people like myself and I am sure many of you, this is garbage. A year ago I would have read this and internalized that I was failing myself, regardless of my accomplishments or wins or all the work I have put in, the scale wasn't budging because I was ultimately the problem. I would have been driven deeper into self loathing and a failure mindset rather than considering something else is working against me. Having this surgery has meant so much more for me than watching the numbers go down on the scale. It was a metabolic and hormonal reset. It WAS a mental reset for me. I had done tremendous amounts of work towards self improvement prior to making this decision. I feel better than I have in years, every cell of my body is alive. That alone is reason enough for me to have had the surgery. I wish you all the mental and emotional clarity to rise above these messages. Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. My insurance company didn’t cover weight loss surgery either. Had to self pay. Of course the next year they switched plans and it was under that plan but by then it was done. No regrets what so ever. Yes it costs but for me worth it to be healthier. Good luck to you in which ever way you decide to go. Sorry it’s not in your plan.
  13. I think as long as the doctor has the documentation to prove you meet whatever guidelines they set up for surgery then you should be fine. In California that is a 6 month monitored weight loss program with at least 3 visits to the nutritionist, a psyche eval, pulmonary and cardiac clearance, and you have to go to all the set meetings and such before your surgery to get approved. Just check and find out what's required and give them the proof that you've done what was required to get approved and I don't think that there will be a problem. You can always call and speak with the insurance directly if you want them to walk you through what you have to do and if it'll put your mind at ease. Best of wishes to you and try not to stress too much, I'm sure it'll work out for you!

Welcome! This site is a great resource for preparing you for weight loss surgery. I had my initial consultation almost a year ago, and I'm down 165 pounds from then! Feel free to post any questions you have throughout the process.

    Not Losing Belly Fat??

Are you a man? I am as well, and I lost about 105 pounds after bypass surgery. I had lots of loose skin around my belly that hung over the waistband of my pants. It looked like belly fat, but it was really just loose skin. If it's any help, I'm just about two years out and it has gotten much better, although it's not gone altogether. I think it takes our skin a bit of time to catch up to the weight loss. I've been told that weight/strength training would help, but I haven't yet tried that.
  16. @rusnj1 I had my bypass on 12/24/20, currently down 23 lbs since surgery. Yes I was feeling the same way, but when I spoke with both my nutritionist and my dietitian they stated that was good weight loss. I mostly definitely get were your coming from especially when some people that I have seen lose 15 lbs a week, it can be discouraging but try to stay positive.
  17. I’m almost 3 years out, and recently noticed hair loss at my hairline. I suspect I haven’t been getting enough protein. Anyone have experience with hair loss this far out? Do you know what caused it?
  18. Hey guys, I am new here! I recently found out that I have what is called a complete heart block, where by electric signals are working as they should in my heart. I am over weight with a BMI of 38.4, I have high blood pressure, i am pre-diabetic, high triglycerides and cholesterol (hereditary), fatty liver, acid reflux and I am getting a sleep study done for sleep apnea. My heart doctor said it is 100% nessesary for me to lose weight or I won't make it to see my kids grow up. My insurance is United healthcare choice plus and my employer doesn't have weight loss surgery on our plan and my HR said they never have and won't add it to our plans, so it is obviously going to be denied. My question is being that it willow sure be denied and I don't have coverage for it on my plan, if I appeal it and have my doctor write a letter stating that it is very medically nessesary for me to have this surgery would that change anything? Or is there zero chance of it getting approved because I don't have the coverage?
  19. I’ve been researching wls for years and am finally scheduled to get a sleeve next month. Today I had a checkup with my PCP and mentioned I was having the surgery and he told me I absolutely shouldn’t. He said that while I would lose weight initially my stomach would stretch back and undo the surgery because I would keep eating how I’m eating (I actually eat very healthy, he has no idea about my diet, he was just guessing because I’m obese). I said well yeah, that’s why I’d adjust and start eating smaller portion sizes etc., and he said “If you think you can do that, why aren’t you doing that already?” Well because I’ve done that before and my weight doesn’t change no matter what I eat so I might as well eat what I want instead of starving myself all the time and slowing my metabolism even more. He then continued to talk about how if I would eat more vegetables and walk for 30 minutes 5 days a week my weight would fall right off, even though I trained for and completed a triathlon last year without dropping a single pound and, like I said before, actually already eat a lot of vegetables. He finished by listing all of the possible complications of the surgery as if they were all guaranteed to happen to me and strongly suggested that he was going to drop me as a patient if I got the surgery: “If you decide to do it anyway, I’m not picking up the pieces of that mess.” I’m still getting the surgery, and I’m used to this attitude from family and coworkers but this was upsetting because I had expected my doctor to be more knowledgeable about how weight loss actually works. Guess I’ll have to find a new PCP. Thanks for listening to my rant lol
  20. @Elizabeth Smith, hello I am currently on stage 4 diet mainly all proteins. I advance to full solids in 2 weeks. Wow thats a lot of weight loss in 2 months, why are you malnutrition. Are you getting in your daily protein and water intake?
  21. I think you have a pretty good plan. In my opinion, the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to not focus on weight loss but to focus instead on living a healthy lifestyle. It's kind of cliché but if you look at nutrition guides, such as the food pyramid or myplate.gov (what I used) you can get a pretty good idea of how many calories you should eat each day and what percentage of your diet should consist of starch, protein, fruits, and vegetables. If you focus on just being healthy and getting the nutrients your body needs without going over your calorie limit, you will lose weight as a side effect of that. This is especially helpful after your surgery when you have lost the weight you want to lose. As I'm sure you've heard 1000 times, if you don't change your lifestyle and nutrition/exercise habits, you will likely end up gaining much or all of the weight back. Good luck with your insurance and your surgery! I hope all goes well for you.
  22. The fact that you are 18 is a very good thing in my opinion. Obviously everybody is different and will have very different results but here is my surgery story (short form). I was 23 when I had the gastric sleeve surgery. I was 276 (give or take a few pounds) on the day of the surgery. In the first few weeks I lost 50 pounds. I kept steadily losing weight until I plateaued after a few months at 190lbs. I kept doing what I was supposed to do at that point and pretty soon it all started to come off again. Six months after I had the surgery I was down to 133lbs (too low!). I worked to put some weight back on and have been in the range of 155-165 since then, it has been over four years now. I believe that the weight comes off slower for most people than it did for me but I have always attributed that to the fact that I was so young when I had the surgery. So as I said at the beginning of this post - you being 18 is a good thing and in my non-professional opinion, I don't think your goal is impossible. It is obviously not a guarantee either. My suggestion is just to do what you're supposed to do. Everything your doctor tells you is designed to help. It may seem tedious but it is important. Also, exercise is very important! Not just for losing weight but for feeling better, being healthy, and for energy levels. Good luck with your surgery and your weight loss journey! -Joshua

My surgery is Thursday, but I have a history of not maintaining losses. I plan for this time to be different and I’m going to apply these ideas. Thanks!
