  1. Your weight loss will be erratic. Ups & downs & plateaus. Nobody has a perfectly straight line graphing their loss. @Tufflaw’s graphs are a great example. And the faster weight loss rate doesn’t last. It will start to slow & eventually get to the point you think you’re not losing anymore when you’re almost at your goal. Some people recommend only weighing yourself once a week or even less frequently. I weighed myself every day but I knew what to expect. As long as your general weight loss trend is downwards you’re doing well. (Though it’s a bit early for you is see that trend.) All the best.

Your body goes into shock after the surgery & a lot of the hormones that regulate certain functions go haywire making your levels go up or down. Then some hormones, like oestrogen, are stored in your fat & as you lose weight they are released into your blood stream & cause issues like mess up your menstrual cycle. You may find your cholesterol goes up too & your liver function is off too. They all settle eventually & many, like your sugar & cholesterol, will be much lower.
  3. That was me too. (Similar demographics too.) No health issues just not really healthy & fit. But I knew those comorbidities were in my future. All surgeries have risks but weight loss surgery risks are pretty low. You’re going into the surgery pretty healthy, all things considered, so you are in a stronger place than some others with a higher weight & existing comobidities. Ask your surgeon for their stats. It’s perfect ok to have a degree of apprehension about the surgery. It is something you’ve no experience of & changes will be made to your body. Those changes don’t really hinder or restrict your future life in any way but they will allow you to live a better life. You have fabulous reasons for proceeding but it is your choice. As @The Greater Fool said the negative stories you’ve read about surgery are the same side effects as not having surgery & continuing to be obese &/or gain more weight. Plus the horror stories make the better online stories. Good news & happy experiences don’t so are much harder to find. Since my surgery I do have an issue with low blood pressure. But this is a pre existing genetic issue & I would experience it when I was a lower weight in the past. Ironically, the weight I was carrying actually kept my blood pressure at a healthy 120/80. The surgery can’t change your genetic pre disposition to health issues but the weight loss may delay or reduce the severity. All the best.
  4. Just got my date today for July! I don’t have a pre-op diet but I’m supposed to work toward small weight loss 2 - 4 lbs a month and adjusting to eating more often
  5. Hi all, I had my first gallbladder attack and ended up in ER. I have multiple stones and they are recommending removal. I’m reading a lot about weight gain post removal- has anyone experienced this? What was your experience like recovering from gallbladder removal post vsg?
  6. Yeah don't beat yourself up, everyone has stalls and times they go up a little, as long as overall it's trending downward you're good. I'm attaching three charts I got from my MyFitnessPal app showing my weight fluctuation over three periods of time. First is over the past month, next is past three months, finally is the chart starting two weeks pre-surgery, just to make it easier to see the spikes. Unlike most here, I weigh myself every single day. I know it's not recommended but it works for me, and it lets me really see all the little fluctuations and stalls that happen all the time. I don't stress about it so it works. Give yourself more time, at least a few months, before you start getting worried.

    Weight loss stall

@Robert-J Please listen to your doctor, not people on the internet. If your doctor said to eat more calories, don't eat fewer just because @LilaNicole20 who is not a bariatric surgeon or nutritionist thinks it's a good idea. I am sure it's very frustrating, but give it time. The weight didn't come on overnight and you won't lose it overnight either. Keep checking in with your surgeon, dietician, and therapist, and try meeting with an obesity medicine specialist if the surgeon thinks that would help (I was very hungry after surgery so the obesity medicine specialist put me on metformin and topamax, which have helped). People have varied results and some people lose faster than others.
  8. I'm just a few days away from getting to finally eat food, 🙌. So what do y'all recommend? I know I can have scrambled eggs, can tuna, can chicken and refried beans. I'm so over this liquid diet and I'm ready to plan a meal lol. Also, right now I can drink my weight in liquids. Will eating be different? Will I get fuller faster? I'm just trying to get a idea of how I'm might feel after actually eating.

  10. I hear that revisions are slower with weight loss. Just keep in mind, you lost 15lbs in less than 30 days! That's awesome!
  11. I think that's what I keep telling myself -- there is no normal. And I've read that some ppl lose weight one week and the second week nothing and the third week nothing and the fourth week a ton is lost. So I have read that experience from others...thanks for sharing! I hope you're doing well at 4 months post-op! How much have you lost so far?
  12. My BMI was on the low end and my knees were only beginning to hurt and only with vigorous exercise so I was kinda like you. It wasn’t like I was unhealthy. but I knew that I was gaining weight year after year so it was only a matter of time before my knees hurt worse and limited my movement more making me gain even more weight and that would limit me even further. It was just beginning but it was going to snowball out of control. There were other reasons that I did it though, I was sitting out of things because I was embarrassed of my size or I didn’t have anything to wear that I felt good in and stuff like that and Despite all the crazy diets I tried i was only going to gain more. I am now over a year out and I had very little pain post op and no food intolerances or anything like that. I did not lose as much weight as I hoped. I reached my first goal which was an easy one but couldn’t reach the second. I am on meds that make weight loss a little more difficult. My point is that I did not get to my dream weight but I am still VERY glad that I did it because I am at least comfortable at this weight to go out and live my life again.

I love to see this thread, it makes me dream, this weekend, for the first time I dared buying smaller clothes, I am waiting for the delivery and want to try them right away. I had saved some clothes I liked 1 or 2 smaller sizes than my pre-op size, but even those are staring to feel too big. I am leaving the "X" world for the first time in 17 years, and I feel un-safe. What if I regain the weight like it happened many times before?! I am starting to feel hungry again, I notice I can eat more than the 2 oz per meal/snack. It is scary!
  14. When I had my surgery done, I knew I wanted it and it was almost a life or death decision for me. I wanted a life that did not include bad knees, breathlessness and diabetes. I was so embarrassed of my weight that I never went outdoors. For me it was a no brainer. I paid as quick as I could. I had a rough ride in the beginning but I am over it now and away and pacing. I am so happy with my choice. I cant make your fears go away but I can show you some more success stories. Go and look at the before and after threads. They go back 20 years and give wonderful motivation. Millions of people have had this done and very few of them have problems. I don't know the numbers. All I can say is if you have doubts, wait until you are 100% ready. You know when you know !
  15. Hello! I too was like you, lucky to not really have any health problems. I did have borderline high blood pressure. Also, GERD which may or may not be weight related. But, I justified it by knowing my family genes and that my time would be coming. Everyone is my family is obese and they ALL have a list of health problems. I knew if I didn't do something to loose weight and keep it off that my day was coming. I would wake up and have all kinds of issues. I am not about 7 weeks post-op and I have NO REGRETS! There is also risks because because you are healthy the risks get lower. You have to do what is right for you but I am pro surgery!
  16. you are reaching your first stall... you will have more stalls along your journey. I am 3 weeks post op and i am currently in a stall. I have not lost weight in almost a week and actually gained about a pound. It will run its course and will loose again.
  17. Hi! I know I'm "new" to all of this. I'm 13 days post op. The first 5 days after surgery, I had lost 7.5 lbs. By the 7 day mark, I had hit a 9 lb weight loss. I was SO EXCITED so I figured I'd weigh myself maybe every 4 days after the 7 day mark. I was REALLY looking forward to my progress, and I was so shocked by the original fast weight loss I just couldn't help myself. Keep in mind -- I'm STILL on the all liquid diet. Well, the last 6 days, I have lost 0 lbs. ZERO! I' got down to 244.0 lbs, then days later 244.5 lbs and today 245.4 lbs. So technically speaking I've actually gained 0.9 lb. HOW?! Can someone help explain? Is this normal? I'm following all the rules. The only thing I'm not doing anymore is working out since I haven't gotten the clearance, but I can totally go on long hour walks as my "exercise" for now. That's the only plan I have at this moment... My other confusion and worries lie in this: If I'm on the all liquid diet still, and I'm post surgery, IF I haven't lost ANY weight in the past week, I'm already getting nervous/anxious for when I am allowed to eat solid foods (hopefully starting tomorrow) and how maybe I'll gain weight.

    Pre Op Jitters...

It sounds like you are similar to me. I didn’t eat a lot of junk food or anything. I just ate a lot, period. I have to admit now that the hunger hormones are back this has been a challenge with the sleeve because you technically can eat a small amount and then eat again on an hour if you want to. Thing is, now that I have lost the weight I am committed to staying this size and that somehow gives me the willpower to not just eat to eat like I used to. In the beginning it’s easier cause most of us lose the hunger hormone so you can lose the weight.
  19. Initial appointments today! Meeting with my Bariatric surgeon at 10:30 am, appointments with the dietician and exercise specialist after!!!! I’m so anxious, excited, nervous. Ready to do this, been waiting a long time. The health issues have piled on as of late and my weight keeps climbing. Starting weight today of 284.2 pounds, height 5’1” and BMI 53.7.
  20. Been overweight since puberty. Starved to lose weight to be a normal teenage girl. i walked and jogged and starved. Had two boys by 23 yrs old. Gallbladder removed at 23 years old. Gained weight afterward. Divorces and lifes ups and downs along with the scale. Ate Atkins/Keto for seven years. Fell off and back on occasionally. Went from 236 in 2013 to 184 in 2015. Moved to NC and lost to 179 after Covid. Put that back on and then some. Hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy 2004. No hormone replacement therapy due to family hx. of ca. Struggle with Keto last seven years. Cannot eat "normal" without gaining weight. So sick of struggling. Hope that this surgery will be a great tool to get back to my "fighting weight" of 135. I am 5'2 3/4" I now have fibromyalgia, osteo arthritis, UCTD, Sleep Apnea, high cholesterol, and occasional high bp and inflammation in my hands, legs, etc.. Its time to get healthy again. If any of you are approximately 200lb or any weight for that matter, I would love to pen pal. I have pre-op jitters. Scared the closer May 24th approaches. I want this but the rest of my life with this WOE scares me so much. I have a really good appetite and I am afraid of failure.

    Weight loss stall

My advice would be to lower your calories. We are still in our honeymoon period for losing this weight. Go back to getting your liquid via shakes and then minimize additional calories by drinking water. Make sure you're taking all of your vitamins. I have minimal interest in food all throughout the day, so I just make sure to meet my protein range before introducing other food in the evenings.
  22. My husband and I grew up in two very different households when it came to food. Our relationships with food are very different. In his 40's, he's been on occasional diets but he's not that concerned with his weight. It is what it is. I grew up dieting from the age of 9/10. There are many days that I only eat maybe one meal a day. On the other hand, he wakes up hungry, wants to call and talk about dinner at 9am, calls at 1 to ask about what I had for lunch and reconfirm dinner plans, and wants to know when we are eating dinner before I can put my purse down most nights. Yesterday was Mother's Day and while I don't have to start my pre-op until June 1, I have started a pre pre-op diet for myself. He just couldn't understand that I didn't want to go out to eat. I relented and we went. The place served bread which I didn't touch, my husband and kids shared an appetizer that I couldn't/didn't have, then salads before our entrees came out. I made a smart aleck comment of "Thank you for letting me know how much I'm appreciated by bringing me to a restaurant to watch y'all eat." Yes, it was petty, but I don't know how to get him to understand that this is a permanent change for me and restaurants are not really something for the foreseeable future that I'm going to enjoy. Thanks for any advice.
  23. It is pretty quick once you complete all the requirements but many people if they are going through insurance are required to do a 3-6 month medically managed weight loss attempt. It’s just an insurance hoop you have to jump through which requires you to go to an appointment monthly and get weighed but it has to be completed before they submit to insurance for approval if it’s required.
  24. So I have done a lot of research into making sure which surgery is right for me and my surgery consult is finally June 3rd. I have already turned in the mound of paperwork they wanted from me and the medical release forms, met with the Bariatric Nutritionist for an evaluation, my Bariatric Psychiatric Evaluation is scheduled May 26th, and I already did the seminar required. Plus since I have tried for many, many years to lose weight I have everything cataloged for my weightloss journey in my carb manager app that I used to keep track of meals, weight, carbs, calories, protein, and fat. My question is how long after the consult do they schedule your surgery or do they set it up before you leave the office to give you a goal to work for?

    Lab orders without doctor

Ooh wow you did them very often. Yea I was required every 90 days for my first year by my surgeon and now I will still see the surgeon annually, but if you have a family doctor they ask you to have them order your labs after that first year. Must be nice that they still get paid for a visit every year but don’t have to worry about labs anymore. Really, assuming I maintain my weight, I don’t see that I will need anything from them but they need to record my weight for their statistics yet I have to pay them. If I didn’t have insurance I probably wouldn’t go at this point but I think it still may help me with accountability to some degree.
