    Almost 75

I had my band "installed" in 2007 & lost 125 pounds. Like everyone I said "I'll never put it on again. In the meantime my husband of 48 years died..but I still held my own. Some weight came back but I stayed under 200 for several years. A year & a half ago my sister convinced me to go on match.com and I met a wonderful man to whom I been engaged for a year & a half- and then I was so happy that I started to eat again & gain weight! Just about six weeks ago I got enough nerve up to make an appt to see my surgeon - after 2 plus years. I thought he would be furious with me but I was wrong. I took the first steps of seeing the nutritionist and the psychologist and last Friday I got the first fill in over two years. 2 days of liquids then 2 days of soft and tomorrow regular food - but carefully measuring. My fiance is wonderfully encouraging and I have 9 lbs off already. I know it's only fluid but gone is gone and I'm on my way to 50 or 60 lbs - down from 230. I'm 75 years old - work full time - have a man who loves me for what I am - not what I look like and soon will have the body I want again. Wish me luck!

What Are You Buying To Prep?

Luckily my dad had previosly had lap band, so I stole his magic bullet. I bought a blender, but haven't used it (I am on week 2 of post-op mushies). My biggest purchase has been a sewing machine, not so I could sew all new skinny clothes, but because I need a NON-EATING hobby. Something to do besides staring at the clock waiting to eat, LOL. So I bought it at 2 weeks post op. Other things bought pre-surgery was just lots of food for liquid and puree phases. I tried all sorts of Proteins including some clear juice ones, which actually sent me into a throwing up fit 2 days after surgery. So I got some already made shakes at costco (Premier brand) and have had one of those every day (yes, even in clear liquid phase.) Good luck! Tabby.

What Are You Buying To Prep?

I bought protein products, both liquid and powder. Also bought some can soups that I will have to blend the first 2 weeks, but then can eat them the next 2 weeks when my diet changes to soft foods. I also changed my vitamins and calcium to chewables and still looking for liquid fish oil (yuck!) That pill is so huge I'm sure it would get stuck for sure! I'm always so amazed that different doctors give different instructions. Guess it just depends on who you go to. I already have a good blender and sewing machine. The sewing machine could come in handy to take in some clothes, I hope!! Don't want to start buying a lot when I first start to lose.

    Time For Working Out

Hi Am 5 weeks post-op. I started working out at the gym about 2 weeks ago. I prefer early morning because am so busy during the day. My question is: is there a prime time for working out? I mean do we burn more if we work out at specific time of the day? Morning? Afternoon? Evening?
  6. My doctor and surgeon both recommended staying on my antidepressants at least during the first year after surgery due to the hormone fluctuation during rapid weight loss. At first I had thought of getting off them since I believed being overweight led to my depression. However, I'm super glad I stayed on them during these past 11 months. The hormones can get a little crazy through this journey! As I approach my one year mark, I'm thinking I will stay on them at least until I reach my goal weight and then decide whether to stay on them or not. Also at first I had to cut the Wellbutrin in fourths, then halves. This was only for 2-3 weeks and then I was fine to take them whole.
  7. I have FINALLY been to the surgeon's office. I will meet the surgeon on July 31. They say that they want me to have an EGD with CLOTC done first since I have GERD. Their office requires a 6 month diet and you have to have 4 of their forms filled out before you can schedule at their office. So they are telling me that I can get the last one 2 weeks after the first and they will allow it. Then they say that the authorization will take up to 6 weeks to get from my insurance. Why does it seem to be hurry up and wait with this? Anyone else feel that way?

    Frustrated

I was banded one day after you and I'm learning that patience is the name of the game, and that is hard! I've actually had four fills and I'm still not restricted. I can tell that I have the band (hurray!) because I do feel it if I try to eat a restaurant size meal, but basically I can eat everything, including big Vitamin pills. I'm losing about 2 pounds a week but it is from plain old fashioned dieting just like I did before I had the band. I have another fill scheduled for next week and just like the last few times, I'm hoping it will be the one that pushes me into my sweet spot. It could take awhile before you reach your sweet spot. All I can suggest is to do the same thing I'm doing.... track what you're eating, make healthy choices, limit your calories, and exercise! Good luck and hang in there!
  9. Hi All, So I had 3 NSV today week actually two one is technically a SV. Today I took my blood pressure and it was 93/69 no meds. My BMI is finally below 30 and now I officially weigh what is on my driver's license! 160
  10. This is exactly what I needed to read! I have been gaining and losing the same 3 pounds over the past 2 1/2 weeks. I will be six weeks post op Tuesday. I don't know if I am depressed or just having too much fun with an I dont care attitude, but I really screwed up this weekend. Had about 10 glasses of wine, a few tequila shots, a bloody mary, hotlinks, crunchy tacos.... Yeah, it was a fun filled weekend by the pool, but I lost control. I will be doing protein shakes this week to get back on track. Thanks for your post.

    After how much time ....

Angelica, I am not sleeved, but I can tell you that in the first few days after you leave the hospital, you will want to stay close to home. You will see that you can go out for a little walk, but do go back in when you start to feel tired or uncomfortable. The good news is that, because you will be in your country for five weeks, you will have good time to enjoy being with your family and friends. You won't want to run and jump and climb mountains, but you will be able to get around. You shouldl not be a "sick" person in bed. It is important to remember that each person heals and regains strength at her own pace, so be patient with your own recovery. I hope it is fast so that you can have the most pleasure in seeing the people you love.
  12. I definitely had (& three years later still have, to a lesser degree) difficulty drinking plain water. Instead, I drink a lot of Crystal Light iced tea & it goes down much easier. You are not alone. Good luck!

    Work after surgery

I think it really varies from person to person and age is a factor too. I am 42. I went back to work at a part time desk job 3 weeks after surgery, with no problem. Some people on here go sooner and some later. If you can work part time from home for a while, I would certainly take advantage of that opportunity.

    Work after surgery

I thought i was going to bounce back. I was going to return 3 days later. WRONG. the fatigue was so much so that after about an hour, I had to lay down. I had to take a week and only on friday was I able to actually stay up all day. So plan on at least a week. I underestimated and screwed up my leave time.
  15. Does adding a protein supplement to your meals help keep you filled up? I've been reading about unflavored protein powder, specifically the Unjury brand. Does that kind of protein work the same way, as chicken in filling you up? I am trying to eat my protein. I haven't had a protein shake since week 2 after surgery. I'm still in the process of getting my band filled to the right amount, and I find that I'm hungry a lot. Would this kind of protein be helpful for me? Thanks!
  16. Is it 18 weeks???? I have read that it is a legal right to consultant led treatment within a maximum of eighteen weeks from referral. What does this mean? Would treatment mean the assessments, or the operation?
  17. Hi everyone i am new to this board i was banded dec 22 2003 i started at 230 and am down to 183 my weight loss has been slow i am have not lost any weight in 3 weeks am going in for adjustment next monday i have 2.6cc in my band right now but everytime i go for adjustment some is gone out of it Heather
  18. I have to tell someone what I did, so here it goes. I'm 2 weeks post-op, started 'pureed' today, and ... I ate a whole pack of those mini 'one-bite' cupcakes. That's 12. I ate 6 at first, and an hour later had the other six. I don't know why I didn't just stop and throw 'em out after I has the first batch, because I was feeling bad enough about it after that, but I didn't. I feel sooooo bad and sooooo stupid. So that's it. I'm just so ashamed of myself, and wanted someone to tell me *something* and to smarten up. Thanks. Mandi
  19. I had similar experiences with binge eating and the band does help me. It limits the volume of the binge. When I am stressed out I want white cake. In the past I would buy a whole cake and several other binge favorites and now I can buy a piece of cake. It takes me two days to get through it and then I am satisfied for a month or so. Most of the time I eat healthy protein and veggies, but I find that if I recognize why I am eating the cake and allow myself to enjoy that cake; I am able to feel the difference between wanting and needing food. Everyone eats for emotional reasons at some point, the beauty of the band is that it slows down the amount and, for me, the frequency of binges. I was low-carb for three years pre-band and re-gained all 130 #s when I stopped low-carb. With the band, I can eat a small amount of carbs with no ill effects, I am eating a more balanced diet and so the carb cravings are less severe. Best of luck and remember it is a process. Lanie
  20. Hello All, I'm new to this group. I started researching the lap band back in October, and have recently been accepted into our local comprehensive weight loss progam, with the intent to have the lap band installed. I've enountered some obstacles, and was hoping to get some input. My clinic wants me to start the South Beach diet (or some other form of low glycemic progam.) This is fine with me, I've done South Beach and have mostly incoporated it into my lifestyle. Problem is, I've been doing it for about 2 1/2 weeks and haven't lost pound one. The clinic called me last week, and my cortisol leve is high (they said normal is 20-50, I'm at 81). So, I have to do a serum cortisol test, which I'm doing next week. Also, my HP pylori is high, and now I'm on a 2 week course of antibiotics and will have to have an endoscope. I'm wondering if my cortisol is the reason I'm not loosing the weight. I'm following South Beach, exercising 3-4x a week. I'm extremely discouraged because I know I have to lose weight before surgery, and I feel I'm doing everything, but I"m not dropping pounds. Any suggestions, or encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  21. Hi all, I was just wondering, in 3 days, I will be 4weeks post op, and have noticed that I have not lost a single pound in 2 weeks. I am starting to obsess that I am doing something terribly wrong. Highest weight ever 164kgs/382lbs Pre op diet start weight 159kgs/371lbs Pre surgery weight 143kgs/333lbs Discharge Hospital weight 147kgs/343lbs (Hospital staff advise this weight gain was Fluid?) Current Weight & Weight 2 weeks ago 132kgs/308lbs I take in small amounts, I am drinking diluted apple or pear juice, and can still only take in 2 tablespoons of food at one time. I am eating 6 x a day if i remember, but usually only 4, and keep up my fluid intake. I'm not 'grazing' and I am actually exercising, so I just dont get this 2 week stall so early in the game. Im feeling super discouraged, and honestly dont know where else to turn for help, can you tell me (anyone) if this is normal? if it would be impossible to NOT lose weight having undergone gastric sleeve? I keep trying to rationalise that for someone who has gone from eating as much as I used to (to get me to my start weight) to nearly eating / drinking bird like proportions, that surely one has no choice but to lose, but this is seeming very far from accurate at the current time. Many thanks to anyone reading/replying Kels
  22. Hi Kels and congrats on joining the losers bench. I also gained quite a bit while in hospital... and was gutted about it, but I knew long term it would work so please, just relax and concentrate on getting in your fluids and Protein. I 'stalled' early....2 weeks out, for a week and then 4 weeks out. I'm now 3.5mths out and losing a nice amount each week. You need to remember you've put your body thru so much, so its just getting used to the fact its recovering from surgery and also your calorie amount going in has reduced so much as well. Don't worry.... it'll happen - I lost 7lbs in 10 days at one point....it literally just fell of me. Good luck Kathy

    Mentor Needed

I would ditto all of the above. Whatever way you can get drink or food in, protein, do it. Don't bat yourself if you can't get 64 ounces and 3 meals a day in. Just do what you can. Slowly it should get better. If by the end of 3 weeks or so it doesn't, that's another story.

    Cramps

Good morning this question is for the ladies I'm 5 weeks post op is it ok for me to take midol ..im in so much pain
  25. Sorry to make you go through these questions, I'm just trying to make sure I fully understand what is going on. So, you had the Lap Band done and that is when you first started feeling this pain? And 8 weeks ago you had the revision, and the pain is still present? I would have suggested that it was trapped CO2 gas in your diaphragm. But since it's been 8 weeks, it is highly unlikely that the CO2 gas is still there. Do you still have your gallbladder? The reason I'm asking is because sometimes, when the body loses weight rapidly, the gallbladder can start to fail, and that can cause a gallstone. When there's a gallstone, you can have pain in your back. Have you ever had a HIDA Scan? If not, you may want to consider getting one. Also, you may want to have your spleen checked. In rare cases, the spleen can have a lack of oxygen getting to it, which can cause back pain. I don't mean to alarm you. I'm just thinking of possible reasons. I hate when doctors try to say that nothing is wrong, when someone clearly doesn't feel well. All of this could just be inflammation of the stomach because it is trying to heal, and the pain could be mimicking back pain. Are you getting up and doing a lot? You may need more rest. The ER might be a good choice, because then you'll have a second opinion. Keep us updated.
