    flipped port

My port revision surgery was fine.....but I had my surgeon to add 1 cc during surgery to bring me up to 4cc in a 12 cc band.....well apparently I swell more than the average person during any type of surgery so the 1 cc along with the swelling was too much. I would recommend not getting a fill at the same time as surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
  2. So... my daughter got married last month. It was a beautiful, intimate, very romantic and meaningful wedding. We had it at church in our smaller sanctuary - about 75 guests, we all sat at the reception tables for the wedding. My dad said a prayer. We had dancing and a dessert bar and a lovely cake baked by our friend and beautiful decorations (anybody want tips about a wedding on a budget... ask me!). Our brilliant photographer donated her time to us because she loves my daughter so much... let's just say blessings abounded... everywhere you looked and even when you weren't looking... a very joyous day. One of the things I didn't have to worry about was camera angles. You all know what I'm talking about. When you aren't at your ideal weight (or are very far from it as I'd been for so long) the camera is not your friend. You try to find ways to hide behind other people, try to figure out the right angle... or just plain hide all together - you are a bobbing head from behind a group of people. That is not the case for me anymore, and I'm so thankful for my sleeve. I loved every picture, kept looking at myself like... hey - i look pretty good! I wasn't holding my breath as I scrolled through the pictures, afraid of what may be next. Now i'm not saying every picture is a keeper... they never are, but I wasn't embarrassed or ready to put any through the shredder... that's a first If you aren't where you want to be for 2013 and are ready to make a change for the better and get back on track to a healthier you... you can email me at lori@obesitycontrolcenter.com or call 1-866-376-7849 ext. 81. Whether its a first time weight loss surgery or a rescue/revision surgery - we can help! Make 2013 the year when you don't hide anymore!

    At the beginning

I had my revision on May 19 (after the band in 2009), so I'm not far out but I am happy I made the change. I had trouble and pain in eating ANYTHING HEALTHY with the band. I started back on solids last week and I haven't had any intolerances yet. Even better, I actually feel full, which I never once got with the band. I can eat more than I'd have thought/hoped, but I'm feeling good about it. I'm down 28 pounds, and I can't be upset about that. I have a group of five bandster girls that get together; one made it to goal (and beyond), two of us have failed, and two are kind of in between, still fighting it. I was sure the band was the cure for me because my issue is hunger and they promised satiety. That didn't happen. I'm still a newbie, but this was the right direction for me.

Why did you choose Gastric Sleeve?

I can give you a very rational reasons for my choice of the sleeve but in all honesty I had an irrational fear of bypass. That fear came from knowing ladies who had open bypass and going to my first bariatric info session. ..early 1990s I believe. I also went to a weight loss group that had a very obese member who was several years post bypass so it seemed like it failed. I was so terrified of the prospect that really the sleeve was my only option (i revised from band that I got in 2001). Now 3 years post sleeve. .uber happy, estatic with my choice as I lost 100 % of my excess and maintaining BUT I recognize my fear of bypass was not rational and based on outdated "experiences". I think they are both good procedures just learn the pros and cons of each.
  5. It took bcbs of ks 2 weeks to deny me for a revision and my revision is for acid reflux.

How long to reach goal weight?

started at 235 (5'2" female) lost 100% of "excess weight" (baseline calculated as 135 ideal weight by my surgeon) by 6 months got to MY revised goal weight of by 7 months. lost a bit more after that, gained some back, and nowadays hover around 118-120. i'm 4 years out. in terms of weight loss slowing down: not counting the first 2 months where i saw higher losses, i was pretty consistent during weight loss phase with a loss of about 10 lbs a month until goal. after that it slowed alot down, but i was purposely trying to. YMMV

sick and they cant find anything

I had issues with my gallbladder, when they found no gallstones, and no swelling they did the hida scan, it was the worst pain I have ever experienced, and I had a baby that was almost 7 pounds naturally. When they did the injection into the iv for the hida scan within about 2 minutes I was in the fetal position from the pain. I have a super high pain tolerance and that pretty much took me to my knees. The tech took a few images, but said the pain told her way more than the scan itself would. When I got into my car and called my lapband surgeon (I was revised to a sleeve after 8 years of being banded) to let him know the results would be in his office before the close of business he asked how I was feeling, I told him I thought being hit by a Grey Hound bus would have felt better, he said "I'll have my scheduler put you on the first opening of my operating schedule. My gall bladder was filling but not emptying correctly, so I felt like a giant balloon was being inflated in my chest. After it was removed I was back to my old self within 24 hours. Before I went to my surgeon I was in the ER 4 times with chest pain, vomiting and shortness of breath. They kept telling me I either had indigestion, GERD, or it was all in my head. I'm glad I insisted that my surgeon look into it, if not for him sending me for the HIDA scan I would still be dealing with it, or it would have ruptured. It's funny I walked into his office when the pain was still bad on a daily basis and told him to remove my lapband, and while he was inside my abdomen to poke around and see what was going on to cause the pain. At first he thought it might be my port pulling away from the muscle and the pain was from my stitches tearing, but he didn't give up or blow me off, he just made it better.
  8. nI like hearing stories about people like yourself who are successful with the revision. Would you mind sharing what you did that was successful to your "almost" reaching your goal. I'm only 4 months out and worried about failing. I too worried about failing, my best advice to you is follow the rules, yes you will have slips but that's okay, that's life, just get back on track and follow the rules! Eat your Protein first, this is a big key to success! If you do over eat at a meal, make the next meal a small one, measure your food if you have to to help avoid over eating. Exercise, at least walk doe 30 min a day, you will be surprised how much this will help. It's not a race, it's a journey so take it a day at a time, someone else may lose faster but that's okay, this is your journey and if you donwhatbyour supposed to do it will work!
  9. Hi my story is almost word for word the same almost 2 years now only about 20 pounds I feel like i could of done this without the lapband the deal with me was My bmi is not really that high now so I'm not so sure they will aprove the revision Dr says he will do it but he is not sure as well
  10. Surgery in the morning, revision from band to bypass @ 730 central. Prayer please! Thank y'all so much:)
  11. I had a revision as well, but my band was removed in December and my revision in April. Band removal was a breeze. RNY, not so much. I had HORRIBLE referred gas pain to my left shoulder and I also had a lot of belly pain. I don't do pain meds normally (I absolutely hate the way they make me feel) but I definitely did after bypass. It was a much harder surgery than any other I have had (band, hysterectomy, bladder sling, band removal...). I was also so extremely nauseous right after surgery they kept me an extra day. Well, that and I could not keep my oxygen level up. It sucked. BUT--10 weeks later I feel amazing. Actually, I started to feel a whole lot better about a week post-op. You will start to feel better about surgery very soon. I am so, so sorry about you losing your dad. I have no words to help with that... I am also sorry to hear that your hospital experience was less than stellar. You have the right to file a complaint if you want to. The hospital I worked for until just recently was really good about listening to patient complaints. It helps identify problem areas and improve on patient experience. It might make you feel better, too. Do you have any Gas-X strips? They might help with the pain your you are having in your rib cage. I know that my pain meds didn't touch that gas pain.
  12. Kaiser seems to preach similar information from site to site, but in the long run, I believe each surgeon does what he feels is best. I had a lot of inflammation in my esophagus due to the band slipping one year ago. I was told I would have to wait one full year before a revision could be performed. Outside of a divorce, this has been the toughest year of my life. I have gained weight, and now that I have been on a 1200 cal diet for 5 weeks, I am not losing. I definitely know how to count cals and use MyFitnessPal to log, so I am doing 1000-1200/day. I wish you the best. He didn't make me do the Options class, but I work where there is a large bariatric program, so I took their six months of classes. I figured it could only help. I did all the pre-op labs, EKG, chest x-ray and psych eval. My surgery is June 27 in South Bay. That is 30 miles from my house in the San Fernando Valley. Good luck. I wish they could have removed the band and done the revision at the same time, but it is what it is. Joyce

    When, Where, and Who?

When did you have surgery? --- April 16, 2007 Where did you have surgery? --- Regional Medical Center in Anniston Who performed your surgery? --- Dr. Bryan Freeman When is your first fill? --- uhh.. not sure, I had several 'fills' that never went in because of a flipped port, my first real fill was during revision surgery sometime in Sept. 07 When is second fill? --- Really haven't kept up with this :/ I've been filled/unfilled/filled/etc.. lots.
  14. Thanks for the story Geri. I'm sure you will do great. I can relate somewhat on the spouse issues. My wife doesn't make a joke about it, but she has zero weight issues. It seems like she eats more than me, yet barely ways 100lbs (she's 5'1"). I had the band a little before you (2009). It actually worked fantastic for me, I lost 110% of my excess weight. Unfortunately, I starting having problems with it this year (reflux and vomiting). I either had to have the band replaced or switch to sleeve. Although I successfully lost all the weight, I knew I still needed a tool. This was confirmed by gaining 50lbs after the band was unfilled. I am scheduled for revision on Sep 7th and am on the prep liquid diet right now.
  15. I'm soooo nervous right now. I'm having a revision tomorrow morning. He is taking my crapband out and hopefully doing the sleeve. I have been reading do many posts on this site and they have been very helpful.

    6.6 years with band.....

First off.......you have rocked the band and done a hell of job in utilizing it to get excellent results........and have lived with those results....through what life has thrown your way. I have huge respect for you in this. You haven't trumped up excuses to hide behind. You've ceased the opportunity and have truly kicked ass. It takes just a few minutes reading around here, at other wls sites or in the two support group meetings that I've attended to find many who simply didn't get their minds wrapped around it before having the wls. I'll likely never go back to another of those support group meetings. It was draining and filled with anything but motivation.....but a gathering of sympathy and validation of bad habits. I suspect those that are successful are busy getting on with their lives and moving into new stages of healthy living.....and posting less or not in attendance at the various support experiences. Maybe I'll reach that point one day....where I'm no longer thinking in terms of being "on a diet". I'll be just living and thriving and not thinking about the bariatric aspects so much. I sure would hate to have to fact my surgeon in a future meeting.......where I'm sitting across from him with a sob story about how I ate around my sleeve. He is very, very clear during all the pre op discussions. He doesn't do revisions in cases where it was patient failure. Very clear on this.

    Sleeve to Gastric Bypass???

This link may help. https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=revision At the top left is a search box. Type in any subject. I typed in revision and got 17.500 results
  18. I had another endoscopy yesterday and the GERD hasn't gotten any better. At least the 2 ulcers have healed though. The doctor who did the scope yesterday recommends surgical intervention for the GERD. I can't expect her to know my medical history so she probably doesn't know surgery is already scheduled for March 1st. Hiatal hernia repair and revision of sleeve to bypass. 30 days!! 19. I just got a revision from a failed lap band to a RNY bypass with Medicare insurance and a supplement like you. The doctor's office assured me that I had met the criteria (BMI of 35 with co-morbidity and a three month diet). However, Medicare doesn't do a pre-approval process--you just get the surgery and the office submits the bill and you hope they are going to pay for it! I just got it three weeks ago and the office said no one had been denied as long as they met the criteria, but I'm sweating bullets here..,
  20. Doesn’t anyone follow helpful support pages or people on Instagram covering their weight loss surgery journey? I had a sleeve to rny revision 3 weeks ago and would love to follow some folks on Instagram since I don’t have Facebook and don’t want to create an account. If you’re active on Instagram please feel free to share your @ and any suggested Instagram accounts you follow/find helpful. Thanks!
  21. I am relatively new here. Sorry that this is so long. I am starting the process of revision. I met with my surgeon who is great and told him that I wanted the band removed and probably convert to sleeve. I was extremely successful with the band and lost 100% of my excess body weight about 8 years ago and maintained for 3 years. I had two babies and due to severe morning sickness had to take 1/2 the Fluid out my band for each. For the first pregnancy I gained a ton of weight (70lbs) but lost all of it but 20lbs within a year before I got pregnant again. After the second baby (3 years ago) I have not been able to lose weight at all. I am now almost up to my pre-surgery weight. I have been struggling with the past 2 years with fills - my upper GI showed mild enlarged esophagus which returned to normal when fill was removed. Bottom line I realize now that the only way that the band worked for me so well was when it was extremely tight and it controlled my hunger. I don't think that this was o healthily and I don't think I can do this anymore without irritating and enlarging my esophagus. I prefer the sleeve over the bypass because I think restriction works well for me. I asked my surgeon about the esophagus problem and he said that it was being caused by the band and should not be a problem with the sleeve since my enlargement is very mild. I had an endoscopy and the GI doctor said the same thing - that I am in good shape and there is no reason for me not to have the surgery. Can someone explain to me why you do not get an enlarged esophagus with the sleeve? I do not understand the mechanics and I don't have another appointment with the surgeon for a month. Also can someone explain what it feels like to be full with the sleeve? With the band I got a painful feeling. When my esophagus was enlarging I was able to eat a lot and it sort of felt like it was in my throat. Does this happen with the sleeve? I am worried that I am "used" to the feeling of food in my throat and the sleeve will not work for me. I am probably being neurotic here! I want to state also that I completely trust my surgeon and he is world renowned at a top teaching hospital in NY. I just want to understand how this works! The surgeon said the sleeve is the way to go for me over the bypass. Thanks!

canadian who have gone to mexico

I strongly recommend Canadians get banded in Canada or only in the United States if they are very near the border and that is the closest lapband surgeon. If you have any type of complications or when you need the regular fills most doctors in Canada will not touch you because you are not their patient and due to liability issues. Frankly also why should they desire to when you deliberately chose to go to Mexico. Lapband weight loss surgery by the very nature of it necessitates strong aftercare and support and should be a high priority. Donna VBG/87 Revised To Lapband/06 By Dr. Cobourn 251/162/125 goal
  23. When I read the postings from those that had bypass, they seem very happy. And the same is said for those that had the sleeve. I choose to revise to the sleeve because it seemed more natural for me, I didn't want any re-routing of my organs. I would just read both forums so you can see the different views from people. And talk to your surgeon about the pros & cons of each Oops , just realized your surgeon recommends the sleeve.
  24. Hi there, So i had a lapband put in in 2009, had inital success with it for the first 4years, then the problems started... Food kept getting stuck despite having fill taken out, i had CONSTANT SEVERE left shoulder tip pain, and left side stomach pain to the point it hurt to breathe and i couldn't function etc! I Lost around 50kilos in the time i had the band! i was happy til i was in constant pain and vomiting all the time! I couldn't even get greek youghurt down in the end. I started to gain weight back because i could only eat crap & slider foods. It was so frustrating! I decided although i was apprehensive to have my band removed (in November 2017) and im currently back to my pre banded weight almost! Im crushed! i have a 2 year old son who i struggle to keep up with & want to be a fit, healthy, happy Mumma to him! SO....... I've had a consult with Dr Brendan Ryan in sydney to discuss my options for revision! I originally leant towards a Sleeve, BUT in my research & medical advice i now see that RNY or MGB is best for me success wise & for maximum weight loss! So iv chosen MGB & im suddenly frightened! Is this op going to work for me, will I WORK WITH IT & BE SUCCESSFUL!? Will i have complications, & massive vitamin deficiencies, what about future pregnancies (Dr said i could have a baby again but have to be monitored closely etc) What about having a social drink etc (i rarely drink but like to let my hair down a few times a year) I think im overthinking but im also a worrier & scared im making the wrong choice..... Those who have had revision from Band to MGB please share your stories, Pros & cons, Success with MGB etc I need to know these are all normal thoughts?????

    Dumping question

My revision from sleeve to gastric bypass was May 23, 2019. I am still having to battle my addiction to sugar. It’s a tool and sometimes were able to cheat but I have to learn how to stop emotionally eating and kick the sugar out the door.
