Just got approval!! Any October sleevers out there?
Finnygirl replied to sleevemebaby7781's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone! I’m already on my pre-op low carb, high protein diet but don’t yet have a date. I’ve done my bloodwork, met the surgeon, EKG, dietician consult, psych consult, financing (I have no comorbidities -yet- so insurance won’t budge) I’m 40 years old, 42 BMI and crazy ready. I’ve completed the sleep study and will get my results tomorrow so here’s hoping no apnea, but if I do have to get a cpap the doc said he thinks a few days with the cpap will suffice for him to write his recommendation for the go ahead for surgery! (He’s a bariatric surgery success story himself and I work in the medical field so he’s willing to clear me more quickly than the norm.) I’m getting the VSG along with hernia repair and a couple other tweaks my awesome surgeon is willing to do. I find this whole process is like that line from When Harry Met Sally, modified and paraphrased-when you find the thing you want to do with the rest of your life, you want the rest of your life to start right away! I’m hoping for a late October surgery date. I am instructed by the surgeon to take 4 weeks off and the only time I can do that is the month of Novemeber, so the sooner the surgery the better. I’ve started stockpiling bone broth (high in protein!) from sales and am studying my new instapot to figure out how to make supersoft soups and such. I got tiny bowls and utensils and have been doing a lot of reading and YouTube lurking. Im excited to find others who are just about to change their lives too! We will look much different in 6 months time! -
How long are your food phases?
Diana_in_Philly replied to mooreva0725's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We did our classes pre-op, but our phases were about 2 weeks. Discharged on full liquids (yogurt, protein drinks, cream soups, etc.) Two weeks later, puree. Two weeks after that soft, two weeks after that full diet. (I was never so happy to see a scrambled egg as I was in week five.) Do the people who do the nutrition classes work with your bariatric team? My nutrition classes were taught by RDs who were in my surgeon's office so the program was continuous. In fact, they went through the stages with us during a 4 hour pre-op special class right after we got our surgery date talking about the pre-op and post-op diets. -
2 Weeks Post-Op - Full Esophagus?
beingdina replied to beingdina's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, she's a nurse and the program manager for my surgeon's bariatric practice. I would only want to get my physician involved so it's all in my local record in case something were to go really wrong. Everything else will go through my surgeons office. -

I’m almost 3 years out of gastric bypass .. I’ve lost a lot of weight but maintained a healthy BMI for most.. I’m currently pregnant and started off with a BMI of 22.. as my pregnancy progresses I’m finding it harder and harder to eat.. I feel constantly hungry but can only eat very very very small amounts of food and worry that my baby will end up with a low birth weight if I don’t get in enough calories. My vitamin levels are all ok and I’m taking a special prenatal vitamin for bariatric patients.. now I’m thinking of adding high calorie shakes to my diet. Problem is that anything with high fat will cause me diarrhea (like nestle Boost VHC), anything with dairy I can’t consume because I’m lactose intolerant, and anything with high sugar will cause me dumping syndrome.. I was wondering if anyone knows of any high calorie drink that i can tolerate?? Or does anyone have a recipe of a high calorie drink I can make at home that will boost my calorie intake.. appreciate any input

Weight loss surgery advice needed
kstp replied to nicole2592's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I haven't gotten surgery yet but have done all my appts and just waiting on my approval for the surgery . And unless you're looking for someone to say you can have surgery next month than you should just look into drs specializing in bariatrics in yr area. I had no problem and it sounds like many others have had gd experiences with getting approved. Worse they can say is no but I wouldn't just fly to Tijuana for my first choice. Gd luck. I was wondering how long do you need to worry about leaks
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 replied to kpeterson's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are well past the phase of a leak in the new cut edge of your stomach. That said, any of us can get ulcers, diverticulitis, other ‘leaks” just like non bariatric folk, but we can also get any of the other many many types of (more common) infections too. Sounds serious - I’d see a doctor. You can’t go too long without food and, in particular, fluid so you need to stay on top of that... Best of luck. -
Isn't it curious that I was told when Obamacare had to pick up maternity care and benefits, Bariatrics was "grandfathered in". Now you tell me I am in error? Dang for $3000 you ought to receive all kinds of lovely benefits. For that amount you should have a licensed face- dauber to wipe your fevered brow. Dang, 1st time I ever remember Medicare being better, than other insurances. They covered me at 3 months short of 73, without a burp or belch. I always have Medicaid as a back-up, if things don't meet Medicare's hopes. And although I regret not doing this sooner, it's still going to be all good., in the Big Picture.

Or there are working class people who don't have employer paid health insurance who are being taken advantage of (legally) thanks to Obamacare. My health insurance is $3000/month with a $12,500 deductible per person and it's basically un-useable as it covers next to nothing unless of course I want birth control or to have a baby at age 53. And it sure as hell didn't cover bariatric surgery either.

My First Post- A lot of reading to do :)
Frustr8 replied to Jazzy1125's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also Jazzy I recommend the liquid calcium citrate, it's brand name is Wellesse, tasted just like orange pushup sherbet you have as a little kid, well into my second bottle, it does cost about $10 but I think worth it. I also like the B12 melts I got from Bariatric Pal store, super reasonable price, delivery is very quick. I choose black cherry but they also come in mint. -

Frustr8 replied to Jazzy1125's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not bad , I have Barimelts from Bariatric Pal Store. Except for being a little grainy as they dissolve they are fine. I like that it's 1 prenatal versus most everybody else that are 2. And I got Spring Valley, one of Wal-Mart's house brands so very reasonable price. I got the blend with folate. Maybe $6-7 I forget now, but certainly below $10. -
Hey I must be drinking the wrong brands, mine bind me up tighter the a Bass Drum! About ready to give myself a wake- up dose of MoM, no results since late Wednesday, when I do, they aren't hard💩just not a whole lot because I haven't progressed past liquids. Another, thing to discuss with my Bariatric Team, isn't it?

I was told that baby food is a big no-no for bariatric patients. Most have tons of sodium and other preservatives in them. They're also designed with the purpose to help infants/babies gain weight and get bigger, while our goal is the opposite. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +
Frustr8 replied to Frustr8's topic in The Gals' Room
Well I finally broke the 300 pond barrier, 298,6 on Wednesday the 3rd. I am doing horrid with my diet, still on liquids, see Dr Needleman my surgeon on Tuesday October 9th, scheduled for a Exploratory EGD on Friday October 12th, I am believing I have a stricture, liquids do pretty okay, puree s and beyond come back up with strength. Keep reading about Bariatric Pal X or Y who had their surgery after me and are much closer to normal diets than me! Effort does not seem to count much these days. Lined up my 4 cups of 2 oz, been doing that all AM , has it worked? Well I have been to the bathroom, and taken my liquid calcium, my AM pills and I'm not one bit hungry. Should be, by now I should be on 3 mini-meals and a couple small snacks. My pouch cannot and will not read. Pre ious Pouch rules this roost! -
Are you eating too fast, drinking too soon before / after meals? What are you eating? I'm nearly 7 weeks and eating 3-4 oz meals (i.e breakfast today 2oz LF cottage cheese, 2 oz deli Turkey breasts). I'm also using a bariatric timer... it helped so much that I ended up eating 1.5 oz Turkey and ate all my cottage cheese. I am also drinking more than 64oz of water. With the timer and water, my hunger is sustained. If I think I'm hungry, I drink. If I'm still hungry I'll wait 30min and reassess. If hungry, I eat. If not... I continue to drink. I also eat 4-6 meals per day 2.5-3 hrs apart to ensure I'm getting all my protein upwards of 60g per day (yesterday got 83g) without the use if protein powders and shakes. I definitely feel restriction, I get not only full but if I over do it, I'm nauseated or will vomit.

2 doses Wellesse liquid calcium, contains calcium citrate, D3 and Magnesium. 1 B12, sublingual, black cherry, got from Bariatric Pal store. Didn't ask but on 3x daily Zofran, 3x daily Wellbutrin 100 once daily Ditropan, Zyrtec. Singular, omeprazole, I find it useless as ppi, but n.p. says for non- ulceration, bet I tell them I want my Dexilent back! Still have liquid Tylenol in plastic shoebox, don't take as long as pain free. And I am still supposed to be on additional Mg for leg cramping, either it is working , 500 mg morniing, 500 he or I am less prone to cramping as my weight creeps down. Having more problems with limited diet and being emesis prone. Next Friday October 12, an EGD to see if I do have a stricture, bet I do from my symptoms, Told them I DO NOT HAVE good luck with oneprazoke, that's why gastroenterologist had me on Dexilent. But it's their party, only my body suffers. Time for another 2 oz of Propel. Going to be meticulous for these 3 days until I see Dr Needleman, my surgeon. And trying not to urp my way into a 50 mile saga to Columbus, that's a long way when you are miserable.

Tespo Bariatric Vitamins
TakingABreak replied to charpower's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Prior to surgery, I looked into the Tespo. However, I'm sooooo glad I didn't invest in one because within 6 weeks I was cleared to swallow pills and started taking a 1x per day bariatric vitamin that is a capsule that you swallow. I wouldn't invest money in any type of bulk vitamin or machine until you know your body after surgery. -
Fairly new to the site and I'm digging back through older posts to find more info about this. I'm very tempted to order the bariatric bundle and the dispenser. I've read lots of reviews and watched a few videos, it seems like a huge time saver. I just wanted to bump this post up and hopefully get more feedback here. I guess my worry is that say it does work great, but they are a fairly new company, only a few years old. What happens if they just stopped making the pods?? Although I worried about the exact same thing when Keurigs first came out and now look at them! Anyway, for the people here who have this system, now that it's been a while, still happy with your purchase?

Today is like Dolly Parton's Hard Candy Christmas for me, not even Christmas in July. Its a month today, well it was at 7AM, and I am having a Why Me day! Ellie 123 says, and rightly , I should call into my Bariatric hospital , let them know I was vomiti,g until 3AM, even the butternut squash soup from early evening was coming up, as well as popsicles. This is not what I booked for, I swear I booked from the "smaller appetite and weight loss" pamphlet. 😟😪😷. Oh I have lost, 22 pounds since surgery, reminds me of a Bible section. Can't help it, I live in 5he northern outskirts of the Bible Belt. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his immortal soul? My insurance paid my 💰 money, but today what did I gain?

Hi all- I’m new here. This is my first post. I just came home from my In-take appointment into a bariatric program. I’m full of many different feelings at the moment. The bad- am I making the right decision? Will people think I took the “easy way out”, Can I really beat my food addiction? How floppy will my stretched skin be? Etc Then I’m thinking about the positives- walking around the store without being out of breathe and sweaty, not getting the eye when I take the elevator up a flight of stairs because I get out of breathe and my knees hurt, being able to go and walk around car shows with my fiancé and actually have fun, be able to sit on any chairs again, not having to buy 2 airplane seats, bending over to tie my shoes without problems... so many thoughts are swirling now. I’m sure I’m not the first person to over think this decision. My insurance is allowing for more of a fast tracked program. I could potentially be having the surgery within a few months instead of 6-8 months. I hope to find support and reassurance here. Thanks for reading! spg

I'm going crazy deciding which surgery to choose!
S@ssen@ch replied to Shimmy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not to make your decision any more confusing, but there are actually recent studies (I saw it posted on BariatricPal, but can't find it now) that say there is no direct correlation between sleeve and increased incidence of GERD. Whether or not someone develops or experienced increased GERD from sleeve seems entirely on a case by case basis. Example: My friend who encouraged me to have sleeve had GERD so bad she developed Barrett's esophagus. Hasn't had one instance of GERD since sleeve surgery. Me, I had what my doctor felt was "situational" GERD, which means that I had it because of my diet and overall obesity. I had sleeve, but about 3 weeks in I started getting heartburn and nighttime reflux. It is managed now, but I suppose it could easily be a problem if I wasn't pretty diligent with management and prevention (medications and lifestyle). In terms of dumping, not all bypass patients experience dumping AND there are some recent mentions of dumping in a sleeved patient. I've had dumping because I ate something very out of the norm for my diet and my body just decided it didn't like the extreme. That can happen to ANYONE, regardless of whether they're a bariatric patient or not. Plus, while we like to tout dumping syndrome as a deterrent to specific behaviors, I'm not sure I'd agree that it will stop you from eating things you shouldn't. That's entirely up to you. Then, there are the statistics with how much weight you can expect to lose. On average a bypass patient can expect to lose about 70% of their excess weight, whereas a sleeved patient will lose about 60% of their excess weight. For me, the primary determinant was that I absolutely did not want to deal with the malabsorption of the bypass procedure. I did not feel that the additional weight loss I could expect with bypass was worth the malabsorption, so I went with the sleeve. While the possibility of intractable GERD was considered, I truly felt that my risk was low. In all honesty, even though I developed GERD, it's not worse than any exacerbation of the condition that I experienced before surgery. In fact, I'd say I feel better than I did before surgery all around and specifically in terms of the GERD. I would do sleeve again, no hesitation. Advice: have a heart to heart with your doctor, consider the risks and benefits, and make the best decision for YOU -
Change of insurance during the 6 month process?
Matt Z replied to Jenwill630's topic in Insurance & Financing
You will need to start over, potentially changing doctors too. I have GEHA, which works with AETNA and they certainly have bariatric services, your husbands plan might not have coverage, but AETNA does cover WLS. Each insurance has different requirements, if you start on one insurance and move to another, more than likely the new insurance is going to have you start over and follow their requirements. -
Hi there. A newbie here. I am just getting started and have my first info session next week, but have a question. I am currently on my husbands insurance(Aetna). The plan does not have bariatric services. Since open enrollment is coming up, I am going to switch to my employers plan (Highmark BCBS DE) because they do have it. If I start seeing the Dr. and start that 6 month clock before I switch carriers, will they make me extend the 6 months? TIA Jen
