what is the big hype with greek yogurt?

There are many regular yogurts that are high in protein too. Just have to shop around
  2. takingbackcontrol

what is the big hype with greek yogurt?

If its just regular yogurt with the Water taken out, how does it get more Protein? I remember letting reg. yogurt filter through a sieve to make "yogurt cheese" but I'm not getting how that can possibly increase the protein?? Not being a smart-ass, I really don't know:)
  3. Heartonsleeve

what is the big hype with greek yogurt?

Anyone tried blending some greek yogurt with some flavored protein powder?

    Mentally Hungry

The sleeve helps (for a while) with some hunger hormones (ghrelin) and allows you to learn how to use satiety as your pal. BUT we ALL find the mind battles each and every day. I am FAMISHED right now for no reason. So, it's my head. So I go forward step by step and try to make good decisions... Yogurt here I come!!
  5. Has anyone tried Chobani Greek Yogurt. It comes in a 5.3 OZ size. 13 grams of protein also 13 grams of sugar:( but I find it avery satisfying breakfast. Add a little fruit and some granola it my current fav. 120 cals per serving
  6. If you’re putting off your weight loss surgery (WLS) because you’re worried about hair loss, you’re not alone! And if you were surprised when you suddenly started to lose your hair a few months post-op, you’re not the first WLS patient to be caught off guard. Here are a few facts on hair loss after weight loss surgery. It’s actually a condition called “telogen effluvium,” which happens when more of your hair is in the resting stage than the growth stage, so you end up losing hair faster than it grows. Telogen effluvium – and hair loss - can be triggered by stressful events like WLS and the WLS diet. It’s more common after gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries than after the lap-band. Hair loss is most severe around 3 to 6 months post-op. It’s hard to predict who will lose their hair and who won’t after WLS. Also, there’s no fail-proof protection against hair loss. But there are a lot of promising strategies that work for some WLS patients that may work for you. The best part about them is that they’re also good for weight loss. Protein: 65 or More Grams Daily Protein is the foundation of your post-op WLS diet. It’s a nutrient that lets your surgery wounds heal. It also helps you maintain lean muscle mass as you lose weight. And when you get enough of it, it can help reduce hair loss. Lap-band patients need at least 65 grams of protein each day. Sleeve and bypass patients need 80 to 100 or more grams per day. Go lean with sources like tofu, chicken breast, tuna, egg whites, and non-fat yogurt and cottage cheese. If you can’t hit your needs with food, go for low-sugar protein shakes, protein powders, and protein bars. Water: Not an Afterthought Fluids aren’t always top on your mind when you’re worrying about your weight loss diet, but maybe they should be. When you choose calorie-free ones, they can help reduce hunger and lose more weight. Plus, water prevents dehydration and symptoms like headaches and fatigue. It also promotes healing and lets your body function - and that’s good news for your hair. Aim for at least 64 ounces per day of calorie-free fluids, such as water, flavored waters, diet sports drinks, and broth/bouillon. Feel free to go for more, though! Biotin and Silica: Ask Your Surgeon Biotin and silica are essential nutrients. You can usually get enough of them from diet alone, but WLS changes that. Some people swear that biotin and silica supplements can reduce hair loss, but the science doesn’t yet support that. Talk to your doctor before taking these supplements. Biotin is usually safe even in high doses, but too much silica can be a problem. Essential Fatty Acids: Fats Are Good! Fats are high-calorie, and they make many foods off limits: think fried foods, creamy foods, and fatty meats. But some fats are good, and they’re the ones that you’re most likely to be deficient in after WLS. The possible results? Scaly skin and…hair loss. You don’t need huge amounts of fats to stay healthy. You could see a difference just by getting a little more omega-3 fat in your diet. Once you’re into the mushies/pureed foods stage, you can get omega-3’s from pureed boneless salmon and canned tuna. Later, you can add walnuts and flaxseeds. If you’re not eating these foods, you might want to ask your doctor about a fish oil supplement. The Extras Why does hair fall out? Stress! So let’s see…what stresses have you already put on your body? There’s the stress of surgery; the stress of starving your body at least, that’s what your body thinks when you drop down to 1,000 calories a day; the stress of changing your entire lifestyle and possibly your relationships. When you think about all the stress in life, it’s a wonder anyone has any hair left at all! So when possible, try to reduce stress however you can. Get enough sleep. Take time for yourself. Exercise daily. Laugh it off…whatever “it” is, it’s probably not worth losing your hair over! Taking good care of yourself after WLS can help prevent hair loss, but not always. Still, you can take heart in the fact that it probably won’t last for more than a few months. And at the other end of those few months, you’ll be down several pounds. Isn’t a little hair loss worth it if the payback is to be healthy?
  7. Choose any one scale, if its at home put it in exactly the same space every time. If I move mine to the other side of my bathroom I gain 7lbs. Is the dietician the one your surgeon uses ? and is this the surgeons advice to you ? 150 grams of protein is not a lot pre surgery. Eating protein will make you feel fuller while keeping calories low. I imagine you need to keep the Carbs low. Can you add what you protein count is usually like, it will help us help you Are you vegetarian or vegan? There are so many protein options out there now. Find some protein yogurts that you can eat or add extra protein to your milk and yogurt. Dhal is great for protein, add extra yogurt and seeds to top it.
  8. Hey KayleeC14 and MIMomaof2. I hope your week was good. Haven't really heard out of ya this week so I though I'd check in. I did my weigh in on thursday and had lost 4lbs last week. That was awesome. So current weight is 263, down 94 now and Sunday is 5 month post. I have having really good gym days this week. Although I didnt want to go today, i got up and went anyway and did a good workout. I am having one of those dont feel like eating days. Got my protein in but not enough calories. Tried the new dannon light and fit greek yogurt and its quite good. Higher in protein amd lower in calories so i think im gonna eat that for a while intead of my yoplait 100's. I am now at 50% of my goal and today i bought a new pair of Danskin pants. XL 16/18. That makes this last week of hell worth it for me. Well I hope all is good with you. I'll check back in later. Have a great week.

I had yogurt 4 days after the surgery. No chunks and one little cup would last me an entire day. You put it on your tongue and let it melt. I could not have broth and it was either that or nothing. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    February 17th anyone?

Well I have never been so proud of myself for me eating 10 sugar free chocolate chips compared to 2 chocolate bars in one sitting. I have change my life upside down Over the years. And if I want 10 chocolate chips added to my shake or Greek yogurt every now and then I will. 9calories, .6gram fat & 1.3gram carbs per 10 chips I can do that. What did you use instead of broth? Any pain when you went home? I just picked up my meds ursodiol, Zantac, zofran & hycet any problems getting those down? Did you need to use any gas-x strips after?
  12. Make Sure There’s Something for You to Eat The worst-case scenario is sitting down to eat, looking around the table, and not seeing one semi-healthy food that’s on your WLS diet amidst the mounds of candied sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, dinner rolls and butter, green bean casserole, and sausage stuffing. Don’t let this happen to you! Whether you’re hosting or you’re a guest, you can always make sure there’s at least something for you to eat. Just make a big enough batch to share with the table. You can never have too many salads, sides, and desserts at Thanksgiving, so consider one or more of the following. Acorn or butternut squash roasted with garlic, rosemary, and chicken broth for seasoning. Roasted Brussels sprouts or green beans with Dijon mustard. Spinach salad with cranberries, chestnut pieces, and cubes of cooked sweet potato. Cabbage and roasted beet salad. Fresh fruit salad. Baked apples with cinnamon and sprinkled with chopped walnuts or pecans. These dishes can save your diet and dignity, and they’re pretty simple! You don’t need to aim for fancy dishes and give yourself any extra headaches in the kitchen at Thanksgiving. Protein and Veggies…You Know the Drill You know how to eat right after WLS. Thanksgiving dinner is no different. Protein comes first, then come veggies. A serving of starch can fit in, and watch out for the condiments. That sounds easy enough, and it’s what you do every other day. Ready to put it in place on Thanksgiving? Your lean protein is probably skinless turkey breast, unless you’re vegetarian or having a non-traditional Thanksgiving. Whether you have tofu, crab, chicken, ham, or venison, you can make a small serving of lean protein the center of your meal. Take mustard and only a dollop of cranberry sauce, which is high-sugar. Veggies come next. Load up on green salads, sautéed broccoli or kale, and anything roasted, such as carrots, green beans, and onions. Watch out for creamy corn and green bean casseroles and buttery vegetables. Finally, garnish your meal with a little bit of starch. Sweet potatoes are healthiest, but you can also opt for a small serving of mashed potatoes, half a dinner roll, or even a spoonful of stuffing. Pick One Special Treat You don’t need to deprive yourself completely on Thanksgiving. If you don’t let yourself have any treats, you might eventually break down and eat way too much later. Better to enjoy a few bites of pumpkin pie now and feel good about it than to cave in to the entire pie later and feel sick and guilty. Give yourself permission to choose a special treat that you love and look forward to every year. Whether it’s your mom’s sausage and apple stuffing or your brother-in-law’s homemade biscuits, let yourself have a few bites of that special treat. Savor every bite. Think about its flavors and texture, and what it means to you, and how proud you are that you can enjoy it and be satisfied with that portion. Practice Eating Slowly Eating slowly is essential on the bariatric surgery diet. Thanksgiving is actually the ideal time to practice your skills. When else do you get the pleasure of good company sitting around the table for hours? Take advantage! Engage in the conversation, and focus on the people, not the food. If you stick to the rule of not talking with your mouth full, and you put your fork down and make eye contact when you’re listening to someone else talk, Thanksgiving dinner will fly by, and you may find you enjoyed it more than ever while eating less than ever. Good deal! Don’t Let Leftovers Weigh You Down The dinner’s over, everyone’s left the table, and the house is quiet again. It’s not yet time to let your guard down, though! The leftovers can be even more dangerous than Thanksgiving dinner itself. Pack them up and get rid of the ones that are trouble – like chocolate cream pie. There are plenty of healthy ways you can use leftover turkey. One is to simply freeze it in small portions and defrost them when you need them. You can also try any of these ideas. Turkey wraps with shredded turkey, mustard, and leftover roasted veggies wrapped in lettuce leaves. Turkey soup with a base of chicken broth, onions, carrots, and celery, plus any veggies you want. Turkey curry with cauliflower, eggplant, peas, and Indian spices. Turkey salad with cooked cubed turkey, halved cherry or grape tomatoes, nonfat plain Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, diced pickles, and black pepper. Green salad with turkey, avocado, and black beans. There are so many healthy ways to use turkey, you may not even be sick of it after you finish the entire turkey! With these hacks and a little discipline and creativity, you can get through Thanksgiving dinner and beyond feeling healthy and confident, not stuffed and weighed down. That confidence is worth a lot, and it can carry you through the holiday season as you keep working towards your goals.

Yogurt (regular and greek smooth, no chunks) was included in my list of approved foods for the full liquid phase. You should have been given a list of acceptable foods for each stage. There are medical reasons for the process to advance your diet, so it's more than just "cheating" at this stage. Each doctor has a different diet advancement plan, you need to stick to what your doc has advised. My doc had me advancing much more quickly than most of the other plans people have discussed here, so what was on my plan might not be OK with your doc.

    Few days out

jordien, 52g scoop is six star muscle professional strength whey protein - got it at walmart. (i just re-read the directions. it takes 2 scoops to make 52g. what a goober i am) the chocolate yogurt is umpqua. i dont know if they sell it anywhere but oregon or west coast. i imagine anything will do. i know it's not the best thing for me but anything at this point is better than nothing. yesterday i took a knor leek soup package and mixed it with tasteless whey pwder 42 g's, milk and water. it had the consistancy of powered mashed potatoes so had to keep adding liquid to it to get it to loosen up. not great but at least it's not sweet. the smoothie went down really easy with no cramping. the soup causes cramping but not bad. i have some home grown veggie soup in the freezer. i strain out the chunks and give it to the dogs - the broth is full of all the nutrients and man it's good. the only thing not from our garden is the chicken broth. we also made a beef veggie soup. threw stew meat, beef broth, peppers, onions and chiles in a crockpot and let it cook all day. it too was awesome. the dogs love my diet. (o; we just have to keep trying things. be creative. it's not too hard to eat - it's getting the nasty protein down. i'm going to look online for some protein shots. i hear they're 40-50gs in 3-4 oz. probably tastes gross but i can do it twice a day easier than 10 times a day.

    Few days out

I think that's a good idea. The first few days I didn't want anything. But now I'm doing better getting some calories in and Protein. I am just trying to continually sip throughout the day. That chocolate smoothie sounds great. Wow... What kind of frozen yogurt? Chocolate? Any special brand? What brand did you use? And what whey protein has 52grams a scoop? Mine (unjury) is 40 g per scoop and I thought that was good! I am def. going to make that when I get to my 2nd stage. I can't have milk yet. Just clears. Wow a chocolate marshmallow smoothie sounds good about now. Guess I'll go have a lime Jello in the meantime. haha...

  20. The liquids and pureed will go down faster then solids. Part of the reason why we are not supposed to drink 30 before/after eating is that the fluids help slide the food through the sleeve faster then normal digestion and don't keep you full as longer. Think of Thanksgiving dinner and you ate too much, you took a drink of milk to help the food down. Now it is the reverse and we need to prevent this. As you move to solids you will start to feel fuller on smaller amounts of food for longer amounts of time. Think of the soup, it is a broth. The chili is Water based. The yogurt does have a slightly thicker consistency which is probably why it takes a minute. I think I felt like I ate too much on pureed's too and had to move to solids a few days early just to feel satisfied. Now that I am on solids, I don't really feel this way anymore.
  21. I thought your name sounded familiar and I think I seen you on you-tube I am going to check after this cause I'm pretty sure I have saved your video, I have alot of them, they have such great ideas and information. That ricotta/mozarella cheese bake sounds real good and I am going to keep that one in mind. I did buy a couple of cans of refried beans, I never had them before but I know I'm not going to want to do alot of preparation of foods the first couple of weeks so the easiest is what I am going for. I also have a ton of greek yogurt now and I love them, only thing that after a few days I'm not going to want to look at them..LOL Are you doing anymore videos updates, I would love to see how you are doing!! Grateful as always..

    Does Anyone Have Any Regrets?

hi marisa, rose You are lucky that you are only 31 - as you've noted above many people, including myself wish they had this surgery years ago. at your age i hope you don't have any health issues yet, or only a couple. The past few months before surgery, before i was having my food funeral, it was amazing how weight just piled on in such a short time. If i had kept eating, going like this - would now weigh............ As far as mourning food - i'm 3+ months out and i am usually ok without "wanting" the bad food stuff.. But i'd be lying if i didn't say i sometimes think about lasagna instead of yogurt. oh well. But just "thinking" about it. the truth is i could have 2-3 bites of lasagna, but to me thats a tease, so i would rather not eat it all. It is hard realizing for the rest of your life you'll be eating smaller portions, but healthier, other good stuff, but it is so worth it. I can tell, you are smart enough to know that. i am so happy i had this surgery, it is a life saver. i'm glad you are coming aboard too feeling better about the surgery too. welcome aboard newbie. continued good luck kathy

    Scared!

I'm 7 weeks out and doing well. I feel like myself, but the first 4 weeks the meal plans were out of the ordinary, I found I hardly had any hunger but I made sure to meet my requirements for liquid intake and protein. I'm on regular food now and although I can't eat much, I can eat about 1/2 to 1 cup of food which allows a piece of meat, fish or chicken, salad, fruit, veggies, maybe a little low carb treat, a few whole wheat crackers with tuna or chicken salad, cheeses, lunchmeat, yogurt...and I feel so much better over 60 lbs lighter including pre-op weight loss! You can so do this!

    Day 4 Post Opp

I am post op day 5. I have just now lost the weight i gained in the hosp due to fluids. I was only in overnight. Once I got home , the pain kicked in because of the med change from morphine to Percocet. I have shoulder pain when I lay down. Damn Andsthesia/gas has not fully gone away. My pouch is approx .75 oz, I ate a little to much soft food yesterday (3 tsp) of yogurt. And broke out in a rash prior to that. I have actually felt hungry today. I cooked for family tonight, and watched my brother inhale about 2000 calories in under an hour. I have even thought about cheating. But ya know what, my minor bad day yesterday turned around to a good day today, and it taught me that the dr did his part and now it's up to me to follow the rules or pay for it. I am choosing to follow the rules. This works if you get your head straight. I will have too work through some things and every day won't be roses, but ya know what, being 260 lbs was worse. I finally fell to the losers bench today and I am on my way, I did this for all the right reason. Let your belief in yourself carry you through the rough days !!!!!
  25. I've been on mushies for two weeks and I was nervous, too. Here are some of the things I've been eating: sugar free pudding made with a scoop of unflavored unjury Sugar Free pudding (pre-made) Soup at Hand tuna salad and small, soft whole-wheat crackers soy crisps Low-Carb SlimFast refried Beans with melted cheese and cottage cheese or guacamole scrambled eggs broth with chicken-flavored Unjury Laughing Cow spreadable cheese oatmeal I'm not supposed to have fruit or fruit juice for two more weeks or I'd be having applesauce. Yogurt is good at this stage, too. Some of these foods are more of the "soft" variety than "mushie" but I am always sure to chew and chew until they are at least the consistency of pudding by the time I swallow.
