    Getting to Know You questions

Hey to all the April Avengers! My name is Kathy and I'm from Louisiana. I'm 36 years old, married 16 years and have 5 children ages 13, 10, 9, 5, 3. I work as a RN, but will graduate with a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner degree in October. I was banded April 1, 2008 by Dr Walter Sartor in Monroe Louisiana!!!! Yeah!!!

Never Been So Happy to Get a Date

Well, at my appointment on Monday, the lady who files insurance said that it would be Friday (today) before transcription was back and my file could be submitted to insurance for approval. She told me that UHC is usually pretty quick, anywhere from 10 minutes to three days. I was hoping to find out something next week. Well, guess what?!? I got a call today (same day paperwork was submitted) at around 1, and I'm approved! My surgery will be July 7, and I couldn't be more excited!!!

    Magic Bullet

I bought a Magic Bullet right after I was banded. It worked great, but wore out in about 6 months. Almost everyone I know had the same luck with theirs - 6 or 8 months seems to be the average lifespan. At Wal Mart I found a Hamilton Beach personal blender. It cost less than $10 and works just as well as the MB. I wore that one out, too (in about 6 months), and just purchased another one. I figue it's a better deal - $10 twice a year as opposed to $60, twice a year.
  4. I've had this pressure feeling going up and down my esophagus the last several hours and minor pain in the center of me back. I don't have a clue how to fix this. I was banded last month and the doc has me back on solid foods and im struggling with enough and too much. My next appt is Jan 10. Please advise if you can thx.

    Revision surgery done 5/28/20

Hi! I had my lapband out in Aug 2019 and Gastric Bypass end of December. I hit a stall at 2 1/2 weeks that lasted 3 weeks. It's very common - search 3 week stall. Yours may have started a little later but don't worry. Keep following your plan and you'll be fine. (BTW - 30 lbs in 5 weeks is amazing!) Lori

    Scared And Excited...

hospital stay was 2 days and out of work for 2 weeks, but would have been better at 3. I really did not start feeling normal until 3 to 4 weeks and was so exhausted at work I had to fight falling asleep at my computer. The length of time you stay out of work depends greatly on the work you do. I work in a psych hospital and mostly do sitting type work (with a fair amount of walking to and from places) so two weeks was allowed. I also work 10 hours 4 days a week with a commute of 1 hour each way, so that explains some of my exhaustion returning to work. Your doctor will advise you based on what kind of job you do. I was in no pain although finding food I could take to work was a bit challenging until I got on more normal food. My facility has many restrictions on containers etc allowed inside which made things harder. Good Luck!
  7. Hey Orchids&Dragons, someone on another thread had replied that they hoped you would see one of my posts as you liked your surgeon and they thought I would too. Thanks so much for responding. I have an appt. with Dr. Dyslin's office on 4/9/19. I put it a little bit out there as after discussing what I have been doing - supervised weight loss with primary doctor for 9 months now, already got clearance from psychiatrist - his office staff said to bring letters from both doctors with me to help get things moving along. I was a bit disappointed that they don't have a nutritionist on staff but I understand based on what you and his office staff indicated - they are in temporary quarters right now. They indicated that Cigna had the requirement for 90 days of supervised weight loss - I do have more than that but it is just so odd how the different plans and/or different dr's can have such different criteria. I did ask them about support group(s) and they indicated that the 'support' was done mainly via a private FB group. That works for me. I'll PM you on a few CIGNA questions.... Thanks so much!

    Anyone stopped losing?

revisions always seem to be slower than virgin surgeries. That said, you can always lose more weight by cutting calories....I mean if you're willing to do that (I know I could lose more by cutting them, but evidently I'm not willing to do that because here I sit....still 10-ish lbs heavier than what I want to be...)

    First Time Vomiting

Me too BlueOctoberGirl! I am 14 weeks out now and for the first 10 weeks I puked every single day...sometimes twice a day!! For the last four weeks it has slowed, thank goodness, to a couple times a week. Mine almost never hurt, just an annoyance really...and I am more worried about the possibility of developing barrett's esophogus, or worse, esophogeal cancer. I can't wait for the week when I don't puke at all!!!

    Bypass tomorrow and scared

I was really scared, too. I mean, this is a big surgery and it's ELECTIVE - not like an appendectomy that you don't have a choice about. You are opening a whole new chapter of your life - one that will change you forever in a very good way. Hang in there! Walk through that door to a new life waiting for you! The volunteers at my hospital make little firm pillows for helping with coughing and moving - like getting out of bed. See if they have something like that - firmer than a regular bed pillow. My little pillow was my best friend for about 10 days! Also - wear your compression stockings at home if you have varicose veins. I ended up with superficial thrombophlebitis in my varicose veins which is very painful. It would have helped for me to wear my stockings more.
  11. Love this!! Here is my list: 1. Crossing my legs when I sit 2. Wearing high heels 3. Posting pics of myself on facebook (right now it's just pics of my kids!) 4. Going to high school reunions, weddings, funerals...basically all the places I currently avoid for fear of running into someone who doesn't know how fat I got since high school. 5. Buying an outfit b/c I actually like it, but b/c it's the only thing that fits. 6. Going to my husband's work parties, etc, and not being embarrassed for everyone to see his fat wife (he is very good looking and I know people expect him to have a thin, beautiful, wife) 7. Wearing stretch pants to go to the gym, not b/c they are the only thing that fits. 8. Being a healthy role model for my children. 9. Keeping up with my husband, doing physical activities, hiking, bike riding, etc. 10. Going to a party or restaurant to enjoy the company, and not focusing on the food.

    Dehydrated And Low Blood sugar

You need to drink even though you aren't hungry or thirsty. I forced myself to drink every time there was a commercial on TV or someone on TV took a drink. I also set goals: Get X ounces in before 10, etc... You may also want to call your surgeons office if you are feeling jittery, etc... Some people have to go get a round of IV fluids if they aren't getting the fluids in they need.
  13. Day 7. Weight seems to be stabile after a couple days with soft foods meals. 127.6 today and that is after drinking fluids this morning... I usually weigh before I drink anything at all. I am still doing protein shakes for breakfast (which was my "full liquids" yesterday) and will probably still do a combination of different consistency of snacks - pureed texture (like sugar free pudding) and soft food texture. Lunch and dinner are soft diet. Yesterday I did some meal prepping for a 2 month backpacking trip I will be taking this summer. Both meals are in the "soft" diet. Shredded chicken is the meat source.... so I used those for lunch and dinner yesterday and will again today. Today my dehydrator arrives so I need to finish the rest of the meals. The meal I was eating yesterday was a mexican style chicken and black beans and corn. The other Chicken I made was BBQ so I will be turning a lot of it into BBQ Chicken Mac and Cheese for my two kids... but need to decide what I want to mix with mine. Probably beans... I am thinking that since I will be backpacking I might use bushes baked beans... I will actually need the extra sugar for a backpacking trip. Maybe I will make half with bushes baked bean and half with some non flavored beans? I don't know. But it will be important to have healthy food on trail. And I would rather put the extra sugar carbs on beans than find myself resorting to candy on trail. BTW... when I say I am backpacking for 2 months... I am doing either the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail... these will be hard hikes with 10-20 mile days on mountainous terrain. So yes... I will need the extra sugar. Just making sure it is going to be in a form that doesn't derail my diet after the hike. Anyhow... doing well and continue to feel the restriction and those "getting full" signals. Will continue to eat more thoughtfully this week.
  14. What kind of problems? People generally don't get long-term complications from sleeves. It's not like RnY where people get reactive hypoglycemia and have to have part of their pancreas removed to fix it or get ulcers from the surgery that have to be treated. It's even very unlikely that the sleeve would stretch enough to require a fix. If you mean, what if I don't lose all the weight, it would depend on how little I had lost. If I was 10-20 lb more than I wanted to be, I'd lump it. If it was a significant amount, I would get some kind of intestinal bypass, either RnY or DS. I don't know which one because I haven't looked into the nitty gritty details of either. I'd probably go for a DS but I'm not sure I could eat enough fat to make it work. (I don't like greasy food.) I doubt I would put a band over it because the odds are just too high that I'd have to have yet another surgery to remove it some day and be right back where I started. Plus, the only thing a band would fix is if the sleeve had somehow stretched and was too big and you can fix that by having it tightened instead. Not to mention it rarely happens -- you really have to abuse the thing to get it to stretch. I don't know where you heard that people are putting bands over VSG. I don't know anyone who has done that -- it really hasn't been around long enough to know a lot of people who had revisions. Most VSGers will get a DS if they have inadequate weight loss because they figure they need the malabsorption after all. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com

    Skinny Jeans!

Just tried on and bought size 10s. Cackle cackle cackle. :-)
  16. I had my surgery 5 hours away from home. Discharged the day of surgery and spent the night in hotel close to surgery center and went home next morning. Doctor wanted us to stop every hour or 2 and walk for 10 min. I really had no problems wouldn't want too but could have rode for another 3 or 4 hours.
  17. Well welcome, I myself have been a member since October or 2007 but usually just read. but your story sounds familiar and so I thought I would say Hello. I had my band in 10/07 so I am coming up on my bandaversary and am very excited to say that I am down 104 lbs. I started in a size 26 and am wearing a wonderful size 12 today. Still have a lot of work left to go, but loving every minute of it. Glad your hear - GOOD LUCK
  18. Life has been crazy, and I haven't been updating! There have been floods in the apartment, the car died, mike's mom went to the mental hospital, and when she got out she told them that we stole her car, when, in reality, she let us borrow it for a week when ours broke. Then a lot of expensive things were stolen out of the afore-mentioned car, creating a very hectic life for us all around. Also, just two days ago, Mike heard his best childhood friend had passed. Things have been very difficult for us these past two months. But still I trudge on down the bandster trail. I've had numerous appointments and classes. I've re-grouped with Pam, the nurse practitioner, who told me I had the go-ahead to meet with the surgeon. When I met him, he tried to talk me into getting bypass instead of the band, to the point where I finally told him if he didn't want to band me, that's fine, I would go somewhere else. He changed his tune super freaking fast. He told me I am the perfect candidate for banding. Turns out, that hospital gets more for bypass than banding. go figure. He told me yesterday that I can expect to have m surgery within the next 3-4 weeks, and that as soon as I see a hematologist and lose 10 pounds, I am good to go!!!! I also have one more support group meeting this upcoming week, and another surgery skills class. I am still awaiting insurance approval, which was jsut submitted last week. This is getting super real, and I'm not sure how to deal with it! I want to write more, but I have to go and finish getting everything out of the rooms to be re-carpeted today!

    Finally a pic of me...!!!

I'm in Caifornia, Its not even 10:00pm my time.. and I'm so ready for Vegas! So proud of you Hey... got TO LOVE HER. Your Beautiful
  20. I lost all the weight I wanted to plus 10 extra pounds. I'm considered NORMAL and not even overweight anymore.
  21. Well the swelling in my stomach has gone down and I have virtually no restriction. Along with the fact that I am now on mushies, this makes things more difficult. I am now eating about 2 cups of food at a time, because it pretty much slides right through. I know I am just healing and not trying to really lose weight, so it is all ok with me. I am happy that I'm not gaining, and doing well. I have my first fill in the next 10 days sometime, so all is good. My incisions are almost healed. They only have a tiny red line left to them and the swelling has almost completely dissappeared. The incisions will hardly show when they are completely healed.

    Not losing weight

Thank you for replying. I am 5’2. I weighed 254 October 8 2019 on the day of my surgery. My health issues are PTSD and COPD. I don’t have pictures but my pant size has gone from a 20 to a 12. I do a little exercise with bands. I also bought a Cubii elliptical this past week. I track my food on the app Baritastic. I also track my steps.

    Yogurt brands

Mix sugar-free pudding mix into plain yogurt. It gives it a cheesecake texture and you can control the amount of sweetness by adding small amounts. Smoosh up berries or other fruits and add to plain. My NUT told me foods had to have 10 grams of sugar or less, so I use Chobani Hint, they use a tiny amount of real sugar and fruit. It does have more sugar than something like Triple Zero, but I have remained in ketosis with it and it hasn't encouraged cravings. The artificially sweetened yogurt literally makes me want to vomit. I wonder if you could mix half plain and half artificially sweetened to create not-to-sweet, not-too-sour.
  24. THERE IS NO HONEYMOON!! Sorry, had to get that out. The first thing you need to do is shake the idea that you have a time limit or you're a failure. The reality is that even at six months out you still can't eat but a fraction of what you ate pre-op. Your sleeve is there and it's in perfect working order. Once you're about a year out your sleeve is going to be as big as it gets. I'm 19 months out and can only eat a few ounces in a sitting. I get stuffed on one egg scrambled with cheese or two ounces of steak. Prior to surgery I was certain I would hit goal in nine months. After all, I only had 107 pounds to lose. I didn't realize it at the time but I was intentionally ignoring all of the posts about people that lost weight more slowly, had months long stalls or felt discouraged about surgery. I hit goal in 17 months. The reality is that we all love the folks that make it to goal in 9-10 months but many more people actually reach goal sometime in their second year post op. I lost an average of just over 6 pounds per month. Is that discouraging? Maybe. The difference is that I GOT TO GOAL with the sleeve and never, ever got even remotely close on any diet. I never lost even close to 6 pounds a month on any diet I tried, and even if I had maintaining said diet for the 17 months it took to shed the weight would have been an impossibility prior to my sleeve. Yes, it's discouraging. We want goal weight now. We had a drastic surgery and we want drastic results. We want to be skinny. Yes, we know in our heads that we didn't gain the weight overnight but darn it, we really want to lose it more quickly than we do. The reality is that you just have to accept that your body is going to lose at it's own pace, no matter what you do. The good news is that your sleeve is going to stay restrictive and it's going to help you get to goal, even if it takes you 17 months like it did me. Goal is just as sweet when you reach it after nearly a year and a half, I promise. As for your eating and exercise habits only you know what works for you, but I've posted a number of times about diets today and I think that if it's stressing you out you need to reconsider what you're doing. We want to be happy about ourselves and just being skinny isn't going to do that - we have to be healthy mentally and physically. Best of luck. It's tough, I know. I had a journey twice as long as I wanted but I am thankful for every minute of it. ~Cheri
