    April Update from everyone

To be fair, my highest weight was recorded back in October 2009. I started seeing a nutritionist and lost 60lbs over the next 7 months thru diet & exercise. Like most of us, I just couldn't keep it off once the hunger monster got hold of me. I regained 40lbs by March 2011 and got to 235lbs on my surgery date after exercising my booty off at the Y and keeping my calories below 1600. I'm thankful every day to have had the opportunity to have this surgery. It's wonderful to be free of the chains of hunger & cravings! Now if I could find a chocolate Protein drink that doesn't make me wanna puke... I've had horrible reflux ever since I was pregnant with my youngest child. I had it when I carried my first, too, but it went away as soon as I delivered her. My son wrecked by body in many ways - heartburn, the weight gain, stretched ab muscles - but he's cute so I guess I'll keep him!
  3. Well my pre-op testing was yesterday. Let me start off my saying I HATE DRIVING IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cabbies and biker's really irritate me and just the traffic and overall overcrowdedness!!! (is that even a word! my sister(the teacher would probably kringe if she saw that)! anywho! got to the doctors office and only 2 people were in the waiting room. I pay my deposit($$$$$$) and complete some more paper work. Once I get called back I go thru the norm of BP, temp, height and weight. Yep BP was high 147/98, which is high for me, but they dont seem concerned and feel it's "white coat syndrome". lol You can call it whatever you like as long as it doesnt stop me from getting banded!! Get blood taken(not that bad), and EKG , talk to the anastesiolgist(i can never spell that, but ya'll know what i mean..LOL), and I can say i'm not to thrilled about the intubated thing, but I know i have to have it. Went back out the to waiting room and there are close to 20 people waitng! WTH!!! are they giving away lap bands now,...sign me up! found out the doc was running late so i had to sit another 20 minutes for my barium swallow. he comes rushing through the door. i get called back and in like 2 minutes its over. I stand in front of the xray like machine. take 3 big gulps of this white stuff and bam that's it. As I look over the papers I was given there is a 0 POUND WEIGHT GAIN CLAUSE! WTH is this. well apparently if you dont weigh the same you did on your pre-op testing(done 2 weeks before your surgery), there's a chance they wont do the surgery. i asked for clarity and it's like if you gain like 10+ pounds. Ok not sure how you would do that if you're on a liquid diet for 2 weeks, but apparently someone has done it or they wouldnt have to say it. Ok i've rambled enough! SMOOCHES!!!

the saga continues and is not going to be easy!

Be cafeful in what you eat. Prednisone is a steroid and it can cause rapid weight gain, but don't panick, when you come off the drug you'll loose the weight. Just know it going in so you don't freak out if the scale goes up.

    Happy Being Fat

Until recently I would have told you that I was content where I was. I have been overweight my entire life... I am only 20 and I cannot remember ever being at a normal weight. I was a "chubby" kid and then an overweight pre-teen and then an obese teen and now I have a BMI close to 50... I don't have any pain, I can sleep on my stomach, I can play with my 5 year old sister for long periods of time, I have never been a shopper so shopping for clothes is neutral for me, I have never been bullied because of my weight, I am a confident person, and I like who I am. I can also truly say that I did not notice how big I was getting until a year or so ago. My weight gain was gradual and steady and I didn't notice the 5 pounds here and then the 5 pounds there. I saw someone's reflection in the window at the mall and I was honestly shocked when I realized it was me. At that point I went to my PCP and asked for help. I found out then that I am borderline diabetic but other than that I have no issues. I just couldn't lose the weight. Until that point when I quite literally shocked myself out my bubble I was very happy and content with being a fat person. Not all fat people have physical problems and I also think that the majority of fat people who are "happy" are in a state of denial. I know that a large majority of fat people are also in the lower socio-economical bracket. Those people do not go to doctors, heck they might not even have one. They struggle to keep their heads up on a day-to-day basis and the extra expanse of doctor bills is going to be enough of a deterrent to prevent them from being checked out. Those people will never know that they have high blood pressure, or diabetes, or any of the other issues until there is an emergency. That is what I mean by denial. Also, can anybody truly say they have no problems with how they are? Whether they are fat/average/skinny/anorexic... everybody has something they don't like or wish they could change. That doesn't mean that they are not happy though. If you asked a skinny person if they were happy to be skinny they would probably say yes... and then go complain about how bony their shoulders are or how much they hate the diet they are on. I guess it is just all about perspective and each individual's definition of happy.
  6. My husband has never mentioned one word about my weight gain since we got married 7 yrs. ago. We both have gained weight, but I have gained a lot more than him. I think he will either say "Don't do it-just do it on your own" or he'll say "are you really sure about this?" or he'll say nothing pro or con which will make me wonder Most of our social life involves going out to dinner, parties, and social events so it will be a big change!

    Lap Band Slipped

Hey- been there done that! I am now on my second band and i had to wait about 4 1/2 months to heal befoer they allowed the second band... and in my mind no doubts i was putting the band back in..... my slip was out of my control- my gall bladder went bad and i violently threw up for a while and the band slipped.... so we went in and took out gall bladder and replaced band --- this time around i got a 14 cc band- bigger band due to scar tissue and to make sure i could get teh band loose if it ever got too swollen again.... i was at my goal weight when i got the band removed and in those 4 1/2 months i gained 28 lbs no matter how hard i fought it... I got rebanded on 02/16/11 and it is taking me alonger to get to restriction of course--- but i will say almost instantly I was able to control the weight gain--- and after my last fill as of right now i have restriction.... and the scale is starting to go down. I reeally tried to keep the weight off i follwed my diet plan and worked out but the weight kept coming back on.... I am not gonna lie and say that it is easy bc it has not been- emotionally it is a rollercoaster... but glad i have a band back-- and looking forward to getting back to my goal weight i have 21 lbs to go to get there. Stay strong-- and just pray for what decision is right for you.

    Empty Lap band

Hi everyone, thought I would let you know that I seen my Dr. this morning and when he seen my current UGI X-Rays he almost lost it. My esophagus is mega sized, real bad I was told by his coordinator that this constitute to mechanical failure of the band and there for a letter to my health paln is in the making when I don't know but I am trying to have revision surgery. All the fill has been removed and I ahve been places on a 6 week diet, the first two weeks only liquids and the remaining 4 weeks puraded foods anything that I can liquify in mushy sstages and sip through a straw the nurse said and he gave me a months supply of a diet aid to help on bad days. This is my third dilated esophagus since 2008 and well the band has helped me a great deal but it is not going against me. I will do my best to not gain weight and I was told as odd as it seems some of his patients that had their fill removed as me lost weight no weight gain so I think like me that had their band done several years post op might be able to handle eating smaller portions and carry on as if the fill was never removed, but sometimes it is hard to tame a hungry stomach.
  9. are we as sleevers suppose to be eating 6-7 times a day? my surgeon/nutritionist said to stick with 3 solid meals a day. and one snack if you get hungry etc. could that be it maybe, i dunno. sorry about your weight gain. i worry about that as well
  10. Uggg..gained 7 lbs on vacation. Down 3 lbs in the 3 days I have been home, so I am hoping by the end of the weekend I will be back where I was before I left! I am starting to panic about the whole "40% of your excess weight" and "50 lbs lost is the norm" generalizations. That is where I am now almost after only 4 months and I am not willing to let it be only this much. The weight gain on vacation really scared me. I know why I gained it - eating bread (for the first time since surgery) and ice cream twice. I KNOW BETTER. I keep repeating to myself "it's done, nothing you can do about it now, move on to today, it's a fresh start". I didn't get a fill at my last visit a week and a half ago because I was down 10 lbs., and getting stuck once a week or so. Now, I am thinking it is time...good thing I anticipated it and made my appointment for 3 weeks out. So I get to go next week and maybe get a .5 or 1cc fill. BTW...great job Jess - 100 pounds is AMAZING no matter how you slice it!!!!!
  11. Hi: I am a post Hystorectomy (Total). 210 pounds, 5 ft 7 inches, BMI around 31-32 moderate activity Insurance won't cover. I will have to self-pay and if I do should I look at sleeves instead of the band? I'm looking for a long term permanent solution. My weight gain is related to the removal of my ovaries with a dramatic body change in 5 years from 120 pounds to now. My doctors say I would have to gain more weight to get approved for surgery. I can't imagine doing that. So hey: 1. If you had to choose and were paying for it out of pocket anyways band or sleeve? 2. If you had it done over-seas what doctor did you use, and are you happy with the results? I can't afford in country options. Thank you so much for any help this topic is eating me up.

    I am pregnant!!!!

If you've been doing low carb, start eating carbs. I'm not saying load up on white carbs, but don't avoid carbs anymore. I'm supposed to eat 100 gr of carbs per day without fail, and I'm supposed to aim for 100gr of Protein, but usually hit 80gr. You can not be in ketosis while pregnant, as it causes fetal brain damage. Also, you'll need to make sure you get on a good quality Vitamin, including folic acid, sublingual b12, and Vitamin D. I'm able to continue my Celebrate multi vitamin with Iron because it's actually better formulated than most pre-natals. I'm 13.5 weeks pregnant, however I am much further out than you, and can probably eat more than you can considering I'm 23 months post-op so I have zero issues eating enough food to support me and a developing baby. Depending on your pre-pregnancy weight, you'll need to shoot for 1400-1800 calories a day. For me at 131lbs at 7 weeks pregnant, they advised that I needed a minimum of 1700 calories a day and 100oz of Water. juice, milk, and all other fluids are just extra on top of that 100oz of water. The baby will take from you what it needs. It is your body that can suffer through the pregnancy. Make sure you have your dentist monitor your teeth as they can weaken. As for weight gain, I'm 13.5 weeks out, and I've gained about 7lbs of the 30-35lbs they want me to gain. Most babies born to WLS mothers are born normal weight. My ob and even my high risk ob haven't dealt with a VSG pregnancy so they couldn't comment on my "gain", but they did say "You shouldn't have any problem because all of our banded mommies gain a bunch of weight". I just kind of laughed. I've seen some RNY patients gain 50-70lbs in a pregnancy, but they had other issues with food. I am having trouble with some foods including dense protein, and my lactose intolerance is back in full effect. Not to mention night time reflux has hit me a few times in the last few weeks, and that is a total b!tch. There is a pregnancy after WLS forum on obesityhelp.com but I can't stand posting over there. It just doesn't work for me, I've tried a few times, but it just irritates the hell out of me. VSG does NOT throw me into being high risk, but it very well could with you being so early out of surgery. I have other medical conditions that are contributing to me being high risk. Best wishes ! ! !

    I am pregnant!!!!

Congrats!!! #1 thing is to make sure your OB is aware of your surgery. They may put you in a higher risk category to ensure that your blood levels are good and monitor your weight more closely than a normal pregnancy. I had the band with my most recent pregnancy and while you do need to increase your calorie intake, it needs to be as much good food as possible. So back to the basics: meats, veggies, whole grains, dairy, etc and take a really good multi-vitamin or prenatal vitamin. Your doc may also want you to supplement with additional Iron and Vitamin D since the babes tend to deplete those rapidly. This will be an exciting time for you. Don't stress about any weight gain you may or may not have; just concentrate on being healthy and your baby will reap the benefits!
  14. That was the biggest surprise of my life. I had to undergo more than a year of fertility treatment and artificial insemination to have my daughter and now, when I least expecetd, I got this blessing. I am 3 month post VSG and almost 6 weeks pregant. I am still afraid, concerned about the nutrition of the fetus, weight gain, breatsfeeding ... finances... and all those things... but I am sooooo HAPPY about this baby. May God bring him/her in good health! I have so many questions for you gals who went through VSG and pregnancy. Were your babies born normal weight? Did you gain lots of weight? How did you manage to get more calories? What advise or tips you can give me? I am looking forward to share my experience with you and to learn from your experiences.

Lucky #7 are still going strong !!!

I've gotta start eating better-- hair is falling out, and I need more protein to heal. Got some protein shots although Walmart didn't have grape. At first I blew Tim off when he warned me about taking Narcotics, but now that I think about it, I probably am going through a bit of detox because I was taking Vicodan daily for some time prior to surgery just to get to work or sleep after a busy day on my feet (like shopping). I was pretty weepy and dismal all weekend. hope that's the end of that! Phyl--home yet? New computers working out? How's the knee? Janet-- feeling better? You got a lot done this weekend. Loved your prayer on Facebook, and couldn't agree more. Prayers for Karri. Lots on your plate this week. Karla--are you sure you NEED a fill? I only ask because being too tight makes it harder to eat solid protein ad easier to rely on sliders. If you're at maintenance, it might be more of a head issue now. I do think that being too tight contributed to my weight gain after my hernia repair. Now I struggle with the solid protein issues. Denise-- hang in there girl. I don't remember what kind of work you do, or much about your family. Sorry. When I was working I didn't keep up very well. Steph-- what's up? Candice--where are you today? How do you resist trying all the different foods along the way?

    Well HELLO Sprout

You look fab! You definitely have the pregnancy glow! I think it's great that you're not worrying about the weight gain and extra food intake. Gotta do what's best for "sprout"! Good luck to you as you continue through your pregnancy!

    2 years ago today

Congrats! You've done a wonderful job losing and now maintaining. I also enjoy reading your posts and your rave reviews of Dr. Aceves really helped me when I was trying to gather information early in the game. Keep up the great work, and thanks for being honest about weight gain and control in maintenance. I think a lot of us view the tough part as getting to goal, but I think maintenance still requires a lot of work and willpower. Plus, it lasts FOREVER. ~Cheri

I want to scream at people!

I can relate, my grandmother did this to me constantly while I was growing up and made me feel like I was morbidly obese, (turns out I was a size 11 back then). I wish I had known then that I wasn't really that big, she wore a size 18 herself. It wasn't until after she died and i started looking at pictures of her when she was younger that I realized she was (in her dreadfully misguided way) trying to tell me to watch it and not end up like her, for some reason she thought this would work!! Looking at those old pictures I see we are built the same way and she must have recognized herself in my varying stages of weight gain through puberty, early adulthood. I don't know if this is the situation with your aunt, but I wish I had known not to let it bother me. All you can do for now is ignore her and watch her freak out when you start really losing!!!

    Dukan diet

diet update- was going very well until I had to take a strong anti-inflammatory because of my jaw operation - water retention, rapid weight gain and constipation - up about 6 pounds! prescription ends in 3 and 1/2 days and will see if weight goes back down.

    Birth control question

Loestrin has been my saving grace! It is the only BC I have ever been on though, I have been on it since I was seventeen (im 21 now). I too suffered from AWFUL cramps, and unfortunately for me I always threw up. But if I make sure to take my pill every day around the same time I almost NEVER have cramps and when I do they are very mild. I have not seen any weight gain other than my own doing that the pill has caused. My dosctor told me that BC in the form of a shot will make you gain weight, and also the ones that are placed in your Va jay jay, Maybe try the IUD?
  22. Christine, I did get my band removed. I'm one of the people the band didn't help (other than that it make me take a serious look at my eating habits and just try harder...that's worth a lot), so no I wouldn't get it again. My surgeon still feels like I would be a good candidate for the sleeve since I did follow the rules and would most likely be successful, but I'm just not at the point of reconciling myself to being that drastic. Now, if in the next 6 months I see my weight climbing and problems once again with needing meds for my diabetes...yeah, I'll do it in a heartbeat. There are all sorts of possible problems with every WLS...some they don't even think to tell you. You just have to weigh those issues against what you're dealing with as far as weight gain and possible health problems and then decide which takes precedence *for you*. .
  23. Claudia, I have been on a variety of antidepresants for several years, and regardless of the sideeffects of possible weight gain-you need to acknowledge the benefits. I may have gained some weight over the several years but I really think the benefits of the medication definately outweigh the few pounds. Best of luck on your journey, remember you and your health are the most important.

3 Weeks post op and need some help!

as long as you are mindful of the types of food that you are eating, this is normal. I lost up front until i started solid foods and then did not loose any weight for a couple of weeks and then started loosing. it is natural for us to fear the weight gain as for most of us we have not been successful with dieting and what has been our experience with that? we gain...keep heart. Journal your food, water, and exercise keep track of your measurements as sometimes your body will loose inches and not pounds. Good luck to everyone no matter what stage in the process that you are!
