    UGH ...

In response to the 6 flags dilemma, this makes me sad. Your husband obviously loves you - he committed to spend the rest of his life with you!!! If this is a friend of his, he will likely love you too - for making his friend happy. The fact that you might be slimmer 2-3 months from now is not the answer. You are still YOU!!! That is enough, even if you never lose the weight. Please do not stop living because the weight shames you. Weight is not the answer (not denying that that it adds dramatically to our sense of self worth, but...) you are! Go have fun with the man who loves you and his friend. Keep trying on the pre-op diet. If it's any consolation I am 3 weeks out and just gained 2 lbs!! Sucky, but not uncommon. Were you close to getting your period when you had to weigh in? that often adds a lot of weight (probably my gain). Also your profile pic- adorable!! Get out there with your bad self and live a little.

    Increased Restriction

Thanks for your insight on this. I love the fact that you talked about the pyloric valve, and how we stack our food against it. I was actually having a conversation with a friend about this just the other night, and telling him how it worked. I think my problem is chewing, I have always been a very fast eater, and I know that I need to slow down, so perhaps that would help. I put about 3 ounces of food on my plate last night for dinner, and could only eat about 3/4 of it. there was about 1oz of Turkey, 1 small piece of carrot and about a tsp of mashed potatoes with some gravy on all. When I was done, I had that back pain that I always associate with over eating. I never drink while eating, it's just painful, so I don't do it, plus I don't want to wash all the food down that I just ate. I want to make sure that I get in my max weight loss before the dreaded 6 months slow down (not entirely sure if I believe the 6 month slow down, but I want to be prepared just in case). I will definitely experiment with your suggestions though and see what I find. I appreciate your insight. Now I am going to go read your blog
  3. This is going to come off sounding super harsh, and probably isn't going to "sound" right, but it's really how I feel about these situations, even with family members. I do not think we should expect others to change their behaviors due to our decision to have weight loss surgery. Temptations are going to be everywhere, and we have to make the choice to not indulge. While it's nice in theory that those co-workers would be supportive and not tempt you, if it's something they love to do, I would not be comfortable asking them to change what they do to accommodate me or my eating behaviors. If you are close with the co-workers, and you know them way better than any of us do, then share with them that you are having WLS, and ask that they not tempt you by reminding you that those foods are there, or offering them to you directly. Pack your desk with more sleeve friendly options, be prepared for those times by having your own foods available to you. Some people will offer you food because they worry you aren't eating enough. They'll make remarks about you wasting away to "nothing", or that you're getting too skinny. It happens a lot and it causes some people a lot of emotional turmoil. I'm not opposed to sharing your choice to have surgery, but I would not feel it's fair to ask them to stop doing something they love because your choice.
  4. That's true. I can see mine through the skin since I've lost weight.
  5. I guess different surgeons have different preferences. My surgen put it just above my belly button and upside down! But I'm thinking as I lose weight it will be hidden by the belly button (I hope)
  6. Diving post op? Like scuba diving. It's one of my favorite things to do. I did do it within the last year pre op (sleeved 12/10/2012), but its not too cute squeezing by big butt into a wetsuit and having to be strapped with 21 lbs of weights. Cuz FYI.. fat floats! I am in the planning stages of my next vacation and I wanted to return to my favorite place in Mexico to dive. I am concerned about air in my belly or getting sea sick. Is it any different than before? I should be about 4.5 months post op when we go.

4 months post op- slow loss??

Ditto to what Creekiml13 said! I’m struggling with my water and protein intake my weight loss has been consistent I started the process at 245 and my surgery date weight was 225. Today I weight 190. I had the surgery sept. 12 I workout regularly. Some people’s body’s just take more of a push, my goal it to hit my water intake goal, and to hit some of my protein goal. You will be successful mind over matter! Exercising and eating right is the key to success! You can do it I believe in you!

I am a teacher at a high school. A student who gave me nothing but problems last year walked up to me today and shook my hand. I was like what is that for??? He said I want to say that you have done a good job losing weight and that I was not even sure it was you this year. It felt good to even have the kids recognize my hard work! I teach freshmen, so they do not know what I looked like last year. They think I have always been this size. 24 more pounds to go and I will be to my goal.
  11. I have had severe siatica in my left leg and have been taking Gabapentin (Neurotin) for 2 years. It controls the pain and tingling in my leg but I’m left with significant loss of strength in my leg. The neurosurgeon won’t do surgery until I’m down to 250. I just had a sleeve 10 days ago. He thinks that significant weight loss may resolve the whole situation and thus need for surgery. Anyone else had their similar situation be fixed by their weight loss?
  12. thank you and i know i shouldnt compare myself to others, but im so bummed. is it common for weight gain after surgery?

    Carbs...UGH!

My nutritionist's advice: Eat as few carbs as you can, stomach as much Protein as you can (my goal is 60-80 grams a day). Drink the Protein shakes if you have to. There are ways to make meat or dairy protein more interesting. I am still on purées but made a pot roast, add a tsp of pesto or some salsa to chicken and eat hummus, tofu, greek yogurt, tuna, eggs, etc to break up the monotony. All these foods are high in protein. The more carbs you consume the harder it will be to lose weight over time. You can introduce cooked vegetables and some fruit (beware of the sugar) for variety but you should only be consuming starches and simple carbs in strict moderation.

    Losing weight

My doctor requires a 10 liquid diet.. to shrink your liver but nothing about having to lose weight before the surgery -- i guess cuz if it were easy to lose weight before surgery you would already

    My S(sleeve)-Day Story....

First of all- WHAT A GAME TODAY!!!!! I hope it took your mind off of your tummy for awhile today! Glad to hear you are doing well. I'm lucky in that I am full liquids after day 1 and the Soups really help. I suggest for anyone living with a less supportive person - have them read the research. I was a non-believer for a long time until I actually read the weight loss studies. I think this helped my family come around too. I'm lucky to have a great boyfriend (of 15 years - it works). He saw me through my diagnosis of MS, and was a trooper through this adventure as well. Anyway - congrats on making it through. Hang in there! Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Feeling Uneasy

I went through this as well. I was super excited about the end result but truthfully frightened at the journey ahead. I had a wonderful support system though. At first I battled head hunger and would smell their "regular" food and then look at my "new pouch" food. However, you will not be as hungry and that feeling does leave. I also found a hobby that kept me busy when those feelings crept up. I started researching and writing out healthy recipes of the foods I used to eat and found lots of great substitutions. It was a stress reliever for me. And helped me. Also prayer...I prayed for strength and the Lord always provided the help I needed. And you will not have to give up everything. If there's something I want...minus sweets or anything that could cause dumping...I eat a very small portion...but always eat protein first. This was by far my easiest surgery and the best decision I could've made for myself. I'd recommend it to anyone that needs to loose weight that cannot do it alone or has health issues. What looks scary now will actually turn out to be a wonderful blessing! Just hang in there and do your best and think about the results during this journey and where you want to get too. My surgery was 1 year ago and I've lost 100 lbs! I wouldn't change a thing. You'll learn a lot during this process. I sure did! Good luck to you! I can't wait to hear about your success cause it's coming!

Hiya, Southern General in Glasgow for surgery but NHS Glasgow weight managment thus time round has been 14 months plus of classes. Taken me ten years to get this far in the programme Fridge Pickers Wear Bigger Knickers ????
  18. My surgeon had a 3 hour seminar we were required to attend. I am so glad I did because I learned so very much. He actually gave the seminar himself. I would look into that, and attend both if applicable and see from there. I kind of feel like you. I have had my consultation and am in my 3 month 'pre surgery insurance stuff' to lose some weight and get in better shape for surgery. I am about to start trying Protein shakes and see which ones and what recipes I really like. That is something you can start doing. I am also slowly weening off of cokes. Well, I havent had a coke in a week so I guess I have weened off of those. I plan to have surgery in early December and about early November I will start weening off of all caffeine altogether, as that is a requirement from my doctor. I will also really limit my sugar intake. I do not want to be any more miserable than necessary when I do the 2 week pre op diet. Also, find out what both of their pre and post op diets and requirements are, like a sleep study and an endoscopy. Good luck!!

    First Plateau?

You are doing great so far. Its not a plateau more likely a brief stall, and it won't likely be your last stall. It is very normal, there are no tricks other than keep sticking to your post op guidelines provided by your surgeon or dietician. Your weight loss will kick in again soon.

    First Plateau?

Oh my gosh I just got on here to post the exact same thing I am now 8 weeks out and have lost 22 pounds. But for the last 10 days I've been at 22 pounds. while my diet has not been absolutely perfect I'm averaging between 509 and 800 calories a day, how is it even physically possible that I am not losing weight my gosh if this is a plateau and I finally get over it I'm going to drop 10 pounds overnight hahaha. 22. MG I was sleeved on 10/2 and doing well also. I am down 36 pounds from surgery and 81 pounds total. I am 19 pounds from 100 and have 41 pounds to reach my goal of 185. We are the same height. Tough staying away from sweets this time of year for my company gets bombarded with gift basket after gift basket. I need to increase my water intake and stay on top of my vitamins and protein. Slacked off from the gym last week but going back to daily gym this week. Been working on strength and muscle toning as well as minimum of 30 minutes of daily cardio. Had been on a stall for a few weeks but weight is creeping off again. Keep up the good work!
  23. I hate to say this, but tell a partial truth. Part of the reason you intentionally missed the appointment was because of the tragic accident with your friend. You can tell the weight loss center that and leave out the portion about you derailing. Get back on the program, eat right, exercise and make sure you have lost any weight you may have gained so that you won't be disqualified for surgery. Return to that center with confidence that you can do this. The person who needs to hear the whole truth is a therapist. This won't get any easier and I have read countless posts about the difficulties dealing with the mental detachment to food after surgery. Now is the time to begin dealing with the emotional part of the journey. That is where the real work is. It is possible. It has been done before, it can be done again. Good luck to you.

  25. Before you make this decision, ask yourself these 5 questions. This is what I asked myself before I made the decision: 1) Have I truly tried everything (before WLS) to lose weight? 2) Am I considering this surgery because I think it is the easy way out? 3) Am I willing to sacrifice my current lifestyle for a better one? 4) Can I accept the pain/consequences that come with this surgery? 5) Will this truly better my life in the long run? These questions helped me make this decision. I was ready and willing. My only regret is not of knowing or doing it sooner.
