Lap band vs sleeve and surgery in Mexcio

What kind of problems? People generally don't get long-term complications from sleeves. It's not like RnY where people get reactive hypoglycemia and have to have part of their pancreas removed to fix it or get ulcers from the surgery that have to be treated. It's even very unlikely that the sleeve would stretch enough to require a fix. If you mean, what if I don't lose all the weight, it would depend on how little I had lost. If I was 10-20 lb more than I wanted to be, I'd lump it. If it was a significant amount, I would get some kind of intestinal bypass, either RnY or DS. I don't know which one because I haven't looked into the nitty gritty details of either. I'd probably go for a DS but I'm not sure I could eat enough fat to make it work. (I don't like greasy food.) I doubt I would put a band over it because the odds are just too high that I'd have to have yet another surgery to remove it some day and be right back where I started. Plus, the only thing a band would fix is if the sleeve had somehow stretched and was too big and you can fix that by having it tightened instead. Not to mention it rarely happens -- you really have to abuse the thing to get it to stretch. I don't know where you heard that people are putting bands over VSG. I don't know anyone who has done that -- it really hasn't been around long enough to know a lot of people who had revisions. Most VSGers will get a DS if they have inadequate weight loss because they figure they need the malabsorption after all.

Lap band vs sleeve and surgery in Mexcio

My one year surgiversary for my sleeve is 9/13. I am thrilled with it! My surgery was uneventful as well as my recovery. I was self pay and chose to go to Dr Hargroder in Baton Rouge, LA. The cost then was 11,900 and that included everything. I considered Mexico but my husband was more comfortable with my staying in the states and Dr H was a 6 hr drive from home. If it had just been me, I probably would have gone to Mexico to either Dr A or Dr H, they both have lots of happy patients over on obesityhelp. As for why I chose the vsg, I didn't like the rerouting aspect of the DS or the RNY. I didn't like the foreign body aspect of the band. I heard too many people having to have revisions due to slippage, erosions, etc. I also didn't want the maintenance of fills and unfills. With my vsg it was one surgery and no maintenance, that's my kind of surgery. With any surgery there are risks of complications so you have to take that into condiseration as well. There was also a recent study about all wls and it said that the bigger, higher rated hospitals have smaller complication rates. If you want specifics, I posted about it a week or so ago on my blog and there's a link to the article included.

    Advice please :-)

Thanks for your reply and words of encouragement. It means a lot. I haven't told any family or friends about my weight loss ops. Just my partner. So don't have many to talk to or get advice from. I've already been researching the procedure of going from bypass to BPD if this one fails in the future. Stupid I know. I'm only 3 weeks out! I think your right about being a revision patient. This is my 3rd weight loss op. 1st SAGB, 2nd Sleeve, now Bypass. Maybe I'm expecting too much too soon and fearing the worst after past failures / complications. I'm in a remote off shore location with limited shopping options and and have a few boxes of optislim and Optifast and a couple of tubs of whey Protein powder so was just planning on using them up until they're all gone then was hoping to be on more regular style food by the time I've used then up. I have about 6 weeks worth left. I just used the fish because it was what I had in the freezer and knew it was a good protein source. I just poached them in a little fat free calcium added milk with peas, onion and garlic and pureed it. Enough to last a few days. Then I have some chicken breasts in the freezer, was going to slowly boil them and throw in some roasted garlic, carrot and onion and blitz them up with a bit of stock and eat that for a few days then see how I'm going. Yes absolutely if you have any recipes that would help me out I'd be most grateful. Also I guess I could try to eat more than one meal a day but I'm thinking the longer I continue with high Protein shakes and less actual food the better my chances of losing weight?! Also I am sipping on Water all day, few cups of tea here and there, optislim / protein shakes, then my 4 tbsp fills me up for over an hour then I'm almost relieved when the hour is up and I can get back to my fluids. BMs are also being a problems. Going from constipated. Almost unable to pass to diarrhea taking daily coloxyl and senna but never know if I'm going to make it worse or better by taking them if you know what I mean. I was taking lactulose and prune juice initially but stopped that when I realised how much sugar / carbs where in them. Jeez you'd think by now on my 3rd op I'd be more of an expert with these things by now!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Pep talk needed

I had a band to sleeve revision on June 1st. I've lost more weight since June 1st than I lost in the past 2 years with the band. I haven't thrown up. I don't have nausea. I don't have that sharp stabbing pain when the port moves and slides over a nerve. I can eat chicken again. I was never able to eat chicken in any shape, sort or form after the band. My tastes changed. Sweets don't taste good and don't even look appealing. I've eaten more vegetables in the past 2 months than I've eaten in the past 6 years.
  5. So many people prefer not to be bothered with evidence to the contrary of what they believe and hold dear. Like any diet the Atkins will not work if you don't do it. There are loads of people on my Low Carb lists through Yahoo that are maintaining for years after loosing 50 plus pounds with Atkins without a lap band. I personally am not one who can maintain, but lets see, I didn't maintain with weight watchers, nutri system or diet pills either. I even gained wt on the mediteranian diet as much as I loved it! I have the band to minimize the damage that I do when I am not making good choices whether they be bandster reccomendations, OA food plan, Low Carb food plan or Weight Watchers. I find that the Atkins way of eating which is very similiar to the OA grey sheet to be really effective for wt loss. I think all of us who are in need of a band, just muddle through this the best that we can, but many would like to see ourselves as successful dieters and hold our own diets as better than someone elses, where the truth is the band is the key! Very few here would be successful in keeping it off if not for our tool. I know of only one person on all the boards I am on who has successfully kept her wt. off after band removal, without some revision to another surgery. She is the exception. I personally have experienced a band loss and I am in touch with dozens of others who have and we all experienced wt gain with that one happy exception. Atkins can do wonders for dropping a significant amount quickly and I am all for using it if it works for you. If not, why whine and get nasty about it....if you don't want to do it then for goodness sake, don't do it, but stop the yaya! Corliss
  6. I tried the band in 2011. Lost 70 lbs. But the problems weren't worth it over all. I looked into revision to the sleeve as well, to me it was less invasive, less "messing around with my guts". By my surgeon advised against it. For me, putting a staple line directly through the scar tissue caused by the band would have posed too many risks. I decided to revise to the bypass. Wish I had done so from the get go! The bypass is the ONLY surgery that's going to give you both restriction AND reduced calorie absorption. You can "eat around" the band and sleeve with ease. The Bypass, with the changes in how your body processes fat and sugar, it's not so easy. With a sleeve you could totally just drink milkshakes all day and gain weight hand over fist, can't do that so easy with the bypass. Can you succeed with the sleeve, absolutely. But you'll have to work at it a bit harder than the bypass, since you don't have the built in punishment system that is Dumping. No matter what you decide, stick to it, use the tools, and accept set backs. Good luck!
  7. I did liquids only for two weeks post OP with the same 2 week pre-OP diet. This included Shakes, Sugar Free or fat free versions of pudding, jello, popsicles, soup broth, gatorade, yogurt, milk. I was never hungry. Now I'm on puree foods including liquid diet items plus eggs, melted cheese or string cheese, mashed potatoes, yogurt, bananas, peanut butter, applesauce, lean ground meats like turkey, and cooked carrots. I'm reluctant to eat because I'm just not hungry, I keep to a schedule and make sure to get all the required protein and fluids. Regarding your question about energy levels, I found only consuming 700 to 1000 calories per day is great for weight loss but tough on keeping up my energy. I am recovering so I rest a lot and deal with feeling a bit weak. I'll change my diet to soft foods this Monday and increase my calorie intake. My most recent surgery was a revision to DS. Keep in mind, the goal is to progress in stages to a reasonable, healthy, and sustainable diet. The liquid or puree diet should be discontinued on schedule as they will not meet your long term nutrition goals. By the soft food stage you should have a plan to get all your protein from real food. Avoid high sugar, fried, processed or refined foods. Avoid caffeinated, carbonated, or high sugar drinks. Consume only limited amounts of bread. Bread should be toasted. Select whole wheat. Protein bars and protein shakes are not real food.

    Random pains

Yes. I am 4 weeks out from revision to rny. I saw my pa last Wednesday. She has a good sense of humor. She said the technical term for this phase in the ooey gooey phase lol it is when things inside are trying to stick to each other and settle in. It may be the same for you but still best to ask your dr.
  9. I got my band in 2005. Lost 85 lbs the first year and then had horrible reflux issues. They took out the fluid and I yoyo dieted for 8 yrs. I finally decided to have revision surgery. I never liked the idea of bypass so when I heard about the sleeve I was all in. I had my surgery on 4/30 and I am so glad I did. The doc said my band was a mess and ended up pulling my stomach out in pieces. He said my stomach was close to closing off. Very scary. I can't begin to tell you how much better I feel with that band gone. No reflux, no more vomiting, no more stuck. And my hunger is gone, it never was with the band.
  10. A face lift was going to by my next and last plastics procedure, but based on my less-than-optimal scar healing tendencies, both me and my surgeon decided its probably not best for me. While the incisions for the face lift are supposed to be hidden in your hairline and around your ears, it would likely not be so well hidden on me. And we are talking my face, so I don't want to risk it. Sooo....I decided I'm going the fillers route. I've been meaning to go for a proper consult for months, and reading this post spurned me into action, LOL. I've spoken to her briefly twice before when I was in for followups with my PS surgeon for scar revision. I've JUST got off the phone and booked a proper meeting for next week! My areas of concern are my sunken under eyes, the nasolabial folds (i.e., marionette lines), and my neck. Also I am considering addressing my jaw as the last time I spoke to her she said an inject-able in my jaw will relax my muscles there (as I am a night time teeth grinder) and will result in less headaches and a less wider face. Interesting, huh? In terms of cost, injectables are probably a little more expensive in the long run vs plastics, but its a scar thing for me. Further, most people who get face lifts, still get fillers anyway as face lifts alone don't address volume, only skin tightness. I have seen endless amounts of before and after pictures of people with face/neck lifts with FABULOUS results. I think your best place to start would be to book a consult (lots of places are doing virtual consults), with a surgeon to get basic info. It wouldn't have to be the surgeon you ultimately decide on, but at least you can get some info and a baseline to compare with other surgeons. Keep us updated if you can! ❤️
  11. Hi I had gastric sleeve 4 years ago and didn’t have pain you are experiencing however, because of GERD, had revision to bypass . Then everything you describe was my painful experience like others had all sorts of tests when still there at week 4 which revealed nothing. At week 6 , I moved awkwardly and something ripped. I was in agony for 2 days . Then 2 days after that, all pain resolved met with surgeon and he told me that he had double stitched the muscle as he was concerned about hernia risk. Its worth getting checked out but if they find nothing , then it is part of healing process hope you get better soon
  12. Hi Jennifer, I just wanted to offer an example of a friend of mine who had RNY. She had it about 3yrs ago. I hadn't seen her in a while and met up with her this past Feb. She had lost close to 150lbs. I was excited for her but I was quickly corrected. She was very disappointed with her experience. She told me about her dumping syndrome and how she feels she was much happier being overweight than she is now. I have been looking into RNY and LapBand for quite a while now-I have about 200 to lose. The nurse practitioner told me that if I want to work for the weightloss, the band was an excellent choice for me but if I wanted quick weightloss go with RNY. So I started researching. I have found this...LapBand has PBing, sliming and slippage(these are the complaints I have seen most often). There is also the possibility of erosion. With RNY you get..malabsorption, lifetime of taking vitamins, iron and other nutritional supplements, dumping syndrome (chills, cold sweat, nausea, vomiting etc), weight regain (because once you stretch your pouch-the stomach is elastic-there isn't much you can do to get it to where it was. True, there is RNY Revision but that should only be done as a major necessity. If you really want to see some of the effects of RNY just go to youtube.com and put gastric bypass in the search box. There are alot of RNY pts that have documented their process. Sure most of them say they would "do it again an a heartbeat" but to hear some of the stuff they are going through..my thought is "Why?" One lady I read about even bragged about her RNY but then blogged about all the times she has gone to the ER and how sick she has been and how she is actually down to 97lbs (no lie) because she can't keep anything down! Mind you I have also read that some folks with the Lapband have it removed because of slippage or it was too tight. One person even complained of too much restriction because they couldn't go out to dinner and eat like they used to..what's that about? I know this is long winded but these are things other's have said. I am still going through the getting approved phase so all I have to offer is my opinions and things other folks have said. Keep us posted C
  13. Just got my operatiom date confirmed! Ypeeeee . It will be on the 5th of september. I had my lapand way back in - 2004 and hated every day of it. I never lost much, suffered from relux and vomitting and even finding it hard to breath. i hope that life will be alot better afterwards.

    Bypass Vs Sleeve

Honestly the bypass of course has its own risks and complications but that is going to be any surgery. The best thing to do is weigh out the risks you know will occur if you remain overweight/obese vs the possibility of a complication with the bypass. As for the sleeve it is kind of a hit or miss. There seems to be a leak issue that is higher then I would feel comfortable with. Also we must remember with the sleeve there is the fact that acid and reflux issues will almost always occur. While this may not be the case for everyone it definitely seems to be a good majority. The concern for me there would be erosion of the lining of our throats. To me that is too big of a risk. My secondary concern with the sleeve would be that your stomach is being cut out. That is not reversible period so God forbid one later on down the line is diagnosed with stomach cancer. That would be devastating. I personally don't feel the sleeve has been around long enough for me to feel confident in it's ability. Personally I would only recommend it to folks who are extremely obese as part of a two step procedure due to them being too much of a risk to do the bypass initially. Have them lose the weight and get more stable then proceed to the bypass. Even then I would use extreme caution. We just don't honestly have enough long term studies on the sleeve. Then of course we could also look at the amount of current sleeved individuals who are no regaining a substantial amount and who are also needing revisions due to the weight loss stopping before a healthy weight is obtained. In the end it is judgement call that one must make for themselves but with the research I have done and my personal education I would not choose the sleeve.

Anyone is San Francisco East bay area?

I am in Walnut Creek. I had my VSG on March 3, 2016...but it looks like I need a revision to a RNY. I'll be having it done at Travis AFB again of course. I told my surgeon that my sleeve is his handy work, and I don't want anyone else messing around in there! I am pretty hesitant about the RNY, and I'd like to talk to people that have done it. Please message me if you'd like to chat, or email me at: aschuttpelz@gmail.com Thanks!!

    Amount of skin removed?

I had about 5# of skin removed from lower body lift and arm lift. I stayed about the same. Every once in a while, I read about someone who has a much bigger number - say 10-12# removed but they are people with a lot of skin. Dr Sauceda has some patients who need upper body lift etc., and not all of them are "normal weight" because when you used to weigh 400 (or whatever) 200 might be a great weight for you. Anyway, don't count on skin removal as a weight loss tool. i would also say that even though I had a lower body lift, i didn't do the vertical cut, and didn't do an upper body lift. I look great if i do say so myself but, i have excess skin on my torso still. This morning, I weigh 197 pounds LESS than my liftetime high so it frankly comes with the territory of losing that much weight. When I went down for my breast revision I talked to him about lipo around my torso and he told me that it wasn't fat. He could feel my muscle right under the skin, but it sometimes seems like it is a bit of fat that could be lipoed out but it really isn't. I guess a little off topic, but my point is that I love my results, I think I look great, I know I have a good body for my age (and frankly, not bad compared to many younger even) but it is far far from drumtight perfect. I had plastics 8 months after hitting goal I lost another 8# before i had plastics for a very specific reason. The rough guideline is your results are best if you stay within 10% of your "plastics day weight". So, I weighed 150 when I had plasctics which puts me in a range of 135 to 165 that I NEVER want to be out of. I find it to be a good motivation because the day I saw 165 on the scale last summer - I made big changes and now weigh 153! I need all the motivation I can get.
  17. I had my surgery with Dr. Murr in Tampa st because he is one of the best surgeons doing barbaric surgery over 1,500 procedures along with many revisions of botched surgeries. Secondly he is one of the only preferred providers in the area for my insurance BC/BS. I went to Dr. Grossbards class before you start your surgery process I we didn't "click" . I waited over a year to find a surgeon that I did like. The one I found was really good. if you are not comfortable with your surgeon look around there are many good surgeons available to you. Hope this helps Jim

    Dr. in Houston?

I am currently working with Dr. Dexter Turnquest on Red Oak to help me with revision surgery. He is awesome and comes highly recommended. He was voted one of the "super Doctors" of Texas in Texas monthly magazine by his peers. I think he takes most insurances. good luck~ Bullit
  19. For me personally....If I were going through all that and having the Bypass would fix it, I would revise to it as soon as they could schedule it.

    Feeling sorry for myself Today

It's been a rough journey for you so far Bastian, it's not unexpected that after all the complications you've had and the revision surgery you will be feeling crap. Two surgeries which have radically altered your physiology have knocked you around a lot, it is just your body's way of saying that you need to rest and recoup. I can relate to you wanting to get on with it, but your body just isn't ready for that yet, give the poor thing a chance to catch up lol! From what I have read and researched it is going to be trial and error for quite some time with what you can not tolerate/makes you feel good/makes you feel crap etc you have to re-learn all over again what your new GI tract can take. Be kind to yourself and take it very easy until you do feel better. Hugs and best wishes hun.
  21. I have been lurking for awhile, reading posts and doing research. I am about one month out from my surgery date (July 2nd). My surgeon (Dr. Maher in Richmond, VA) originally recommended laparoscopic gastric bypass during my initial consultation. He suggested this for two separate reasons: 1) the amount of weight I need to lose (130 pounds) and 2) the adjustments needed for the lap band. While he is willing to do either surgery he felt that in the long run gastric bypass would be more successful. When I met with him I was dead set on lap band. However, reading about the complications, adjustments, etc. I am beginning to waver. I feel that the surgery for the lap band is safer and less complicated...but I trust my surgeon 100%. He has been performing the gastric bypass and lap band for a long time and has had zero mortalities for either surgery. I am beginning to wonder if he is correct...maybe the gastric bypass would be a better option. I am not looking for a quick fix..rather I am looking for one and ONLY one surgery that will provide a tool to maintain weight loss. My fear is that I will not be successful with the lap band and will opt for a revision to gastric bypass. Any advice, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure I make the best decision for me! Jennifer:mellow:
  22. Hi Everyone, This is my first time posting on lapbandtalk. I was banded in March of 2007. I'm currently below my goal weight and have maintained my goal weight for almost a year. I've had problems with my band from day one. From being extremly too tight without a fill to having a dilated pouch. Now my doc thinks I have scar tissue built up under that band and wants to do a revision. I've decided I'm going to have it completly removed. I say that with excitment too. So there's a little history of me now and I have a ton of questions for those of you who had your band removed and not replaced or any other surgery on top of it. 1. Did you have any complications during the removal of the band? 2. Any complications today because having the band 3. When did you have your band removed? (Month and year is fine) 4. Have you gained or lost any way since the removal? 5. How was the pain? I've hear the area where the port is at is the worse 6. What are your eating habits like now? 7. How long did it take for you to eat "normal" again? I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks for your help:thumbup:
  23. Day of surgery (original lap band) And me now after lap band revision to sleeve 60 lbs gone forever!!
  24. What kind of revision was done? This sounds awful. You will be in my thoughts and prayers...........while I watch for an update.
  25. NanaRenan

    Whoa, am I ever confused!

I'm SO right there! Since I don't work outside the home, most of my social contacts are through my church. And of course people are constantly commenting on my weight loss and asking 'How much?" But my brain says, "They're just making small talk and it's a change from discussing the weather." Then yesterday I go in for a check up -- my "9 month", but it's actually 10.5 months due to my port revision. The doctor and his staff are just GIDDY with how great I look and they show me the BEFORE photo. And I can see almost NO difference. In fact -- I still wear the top and skirt I have on in the photo!!! Okay, they're both 95% spandex and the skirt IS a tad LOOSE....but still.... :-( And for a few months buying new clothes was a lot of fun. Then all of a sudden I've hit a spell and it seems that my "in transition but smaller" body is WAY harder to dress than my old BIG body was. Reason being the extra weight I still have to loose is ALL between my ribs and my pubes (pardon my crassness!) So I'm still having to 'fit' the belly. Even when I've smooshed it into a girdle it's stll big. When I started I was pretty much a 26/28 from top to bottom. Now I can wear 14/16 on top, but I'm 20/22 on bottom and it's all because of the waist. Below that, I have no hips and suffer from NAAA. (That's No-Ass-At-All for those who don't know!) Whine-whine anyone got a good low-fat cheese to go with my WHINEfest over here?? Pam<---feeling like someone needs to talk her back in off the ledge some days!
