Pain Meds - How Long Did You Take?

I'm a band to duodenal switch revision and I'm post op day 6. I'm still on my hydrocodone and Tylenol mix. I have one incision that is giving me the most trouble and is the reason I take it. I'm hoping as I start to feel better that I will wean off of it Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt
  2. I am so happy with how 2016 went. I had my revision from VBG of 20 yrs ago to RNY. I no longer deal with daily sickness and ammune system issues from years of struggle with VBG. I have lost 100 lbs, only 18 more to go, and fit in clothes I have not wore in 15 years. (32 waist, and medium shirts) I am the strongest and have more energy than I have in many years I am looking forward to 2017, rather than dreading another crappy vegetative feeling year. I wish the best to all on this forum, and thank you for your support this year.
  3. I am having a major problem and internal conflict about getting sleeve revision surgery. First I was scheduled for December 16th but it was postponed until the 30th because I was sick. Then on the 29th my surgery got postponed to "later" because I got sick again. The funny thing is I was fine for Christmas and thought I was better. Now Im hacking up a lung....Yay. I have been blessed with being able to enroll in my last semester of college, spending time with my kids....and a lot of personal stuff I know are blessings and not coincidences.....and I thought my sleeve too was a "gift". Lately have been getting signs or thinking Im getting signs that Im going to die with this surgery. I know it sounds crazy, but my sister said she had the same feeling. There are more specific details I don't feel like explaining, but its making me miserable. I am praying (Christian/Catholic btw) for guidance and just want some outside opinions. Am I just regular-surgery-nervous or is God telling me No? Or just wait a while? I know God wont reply to this post, lol....but any thoughts would help me, I think. Thanks. Pain!

I had my lapband converted to a Sleeve with duodenal switch on 12/26. It does get better every day. Getting up and down hurts like a bitch. Most of the time though the pain from the gas in my back and shoulders wakes me up before my abdomen. I've been walking at least three times a day and then resting. It gets a little better every day. I notice that it's not so painful when I get out of the chair or out of bed. Just little by little. You can do this! I'm here with you! What's everyone doing for NYE

I will be sucking on some sugar free popsicles, taking some pain meds, and cuddling with my cats. A true partier at 25 years old I go back to work on the 9th so I want to get as much rest as possible! Catheter ?

As one who originally posted freaking out about mine. I am SO glad I had one. Didn't feel it at all when they put it in, and it was only uncomfortable right after taking it out. Almost immediately I needed to use the restroom and went just fine. They stopped measuring after two urinations because I was doing so well. Lapband / Gastric Bypass

Banded 4/06 and due to slipping I had to have a revision done. Bypass 12/09/16. I do know a couple of people live healthy lives with there band but I know more that went through what I went through. I strongly recommend doing it ones with the bypass. Lapband / Gastric Bypass

If you're unsure you should really talk to your surgeon. It's a personal choice based on your circumstances and surgeon recommendations. That being said, I personally would not go with the band. The people who do not have issues long term seem to be the exception, not the rule. All WLS will only succeed with compliance to your plan, however I've heard too many horror stories about the band and listened to my surgeon when he said that they are phasing them out almost everywhere due to the complications (most not related to compliance, like having the material fuse to liver and organs and slipping/erosion.) the sheer amount of revisions and maintenance necessary was enough to tip the scales for me as well. On top of that I know people who have struggled to get a revision to bypass or sleeve because insurance does not want to cover a second surgery. I'm not knocking anyone who chooses the band, these are my personal opinions and personal recommendations from my surgeon who does not band people any longer for ethical reasons. Good luck in whatever you choose!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    January and February 2017 sleevers!

January 10th!! Going to the shops today to kit myself out for pre and post op needs- broths, jelly, etc. I'm getting quite nervous now... especially as my sleeve isn't guaranteed as I'm being revised from a band.

    Devastated

I've had a similar issue - banded 10 years ago and had great success with it. I put weight back on due to hypothyroidism and pregnancy...but once I had my son I went back to the doctor to get back on board with my fills. I was told that I was outside the window of success for a band, and that it was unlikely it would work anymore. I sought a second opinion and right around that time I started having horrible reflux...even Water gave me acid reflux. Upper GI showed a dilation and hiatal hernia, and also showed that even with only 1cc in a 10cc band it was waaaaaaaay too tight. I've opted for removal because I don't trust that the current issues I've had won't lead to other issues like slippage and erosion down the road. So, it's coming out and I'm hoping to be revised to an RNY so I can continue my bariatric journey.

    VIP Member Check In

Hey all! Total bp newbie here I already love it, enough that I felt like signing up as a VIP was well worth it. My psych was the one who recommended it to me and then I saw another post about it on a WLS reddit...and here I am. I'm 39, married to my best friend for 10 years now, mommy to the greatest little boy ever. I'm originally from IL/WI but we migrated south a few years ago to escape the snow We're geeky types...we were both in IT until I took leave to stay home with our son. I'm looking forward to returning to the working world once he starts kindergarten. In the meantime I've built a small part-time business selling my artwork, which is a great creative outlet for me. I was banded 10 years ago and I'm working towards a revision to an RNY early next year (just waiting to hear back from the insurance company at this point). There's a lengthy story to go with how I ended up heavy in the first place, and my initial WLS journey....but that's what the 'my story' section is for so I won't go into it here. Anyways, I hope to chit-chat with everyone around the forums, I'd post a picture but I haven't quite gotten the hang of where to upload my media yet....I'll find it eventually *Edit* - hey look, by george I think she's got it! Cheers!
  19. I am a revision patient as well! I had my lapband for 7 years and gained all the weight back. I just had a conversion to a gastric sleeve with duodenal switch. I figured that if I am going to do this again, then I am going it big. For me the DS had the most successful long term weight loss and that's what I needed. I just had mine done on 12/26 so I would be happy to chat! Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt
  20. I too am looking at a revision to VSG. I have been researching because I have struggled with my band since I got it. I can't eat a lot of the healthy foods even with my band almost completely empty! I have gained back all the weight I had lost and then some, some of which happened with pregnancy and some of which I was already struggling with. However, my insurance does not cover anything related to WLS. So I am on my own if I want to pay for it. I am looking into loans and maybe the option of traveling to Mexico for it. Looking forward to following your journey.

    Easiest psych clearance!

I was definitely nervous about my appointment, but I filled out all the paperwork and answered all the questions she asked and it turns out I'm perfectly sane (and mentally prepared for my revision) All that stressing for nothing! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. Hi all! I had my revision from lapband to sleeve with duodenal switch On Monday 12/26. I feel the need to cough, but it hurts like hell to do so. Any tips on how to make it easier? Katy W- Louisburg, NC DS scheduled for 12/26
  23. Hi everyone, I was originally banded back in Nov of 2012 only to wind up with an emergency removal & sleeve revision in Jan of 2013. I did great - lost about 105 - 110 pounds. But, as a result of a job loss, laid off 6 weeks ago, my bad habits came back. I "never" thought I would go back to munching on crappy food & over loading on carbs. The holidays are not the best time to be job hunting. The stress that comes with it is over whelming. It's hard being unemployed, spending HOURS & HOURS on my laptop applying for jobs that could be a match. I've gained about 10 pounds, and while it may not sound like a lot, that's how it starts. I "refuse" to go back to where I was (245 pds). I now weigh around 148 pds. I'm here to let everyone know that yes, you can gain weight after being sleeved. While you may not physically be able to eat as much, you can eat a little more than when you were first sleeved, and gain weight by eating all the wrong stuff. My point? It's time to refocus on why I lost the weight in the first place, and how being thinner made me feel. Time to go back to basics - 'do over.' Every day is a new opportunity to re-build my strength, and focus on what needs to be done to lose those horrible additional 10 pds that seem to be sitting on my stomach, and surely my butt :-). With this said, I'm trying to back track & remember what I did when I first started. I've become more lactose intolerant than what I originally was when I first started this journey, so I need to be careful what I eat. After giving so much support when I first started this journey, I am now looking for help & support. Trying to come up with healthy menus again. Goal is to eliminate those shitty carbs that made me do this in the first place. Appreciate any help you guys can offer! Depressed, but definitely trying to push through with positivity!! Thanks for listening!

    Drinking alcohol with band

Gonna be honest when I had my band it didn't change my tolerance at all - though obviously a good idea to eat before going out. The band doesn't affect your ability to absorb alcohol. I've recently had a band to bypass revision and I understand that this will change my tolerance. As for drinks, vodka is one of the lowest calorie drinks - maybe mix with a diet soda to reduce the irritant affect on your stomach though? Depends how you do with carbonation mind....
