Hello.....New Here! Have A Quick Question

Thanks again everyone for the info! Soooo, I got an email today from one of the nurses regarding my insurance. Aside from telling me to wait for my "binder" of info to arrive se sent the following: Deductible: $150 Met to Date: Out of Pocket: $2750 Met to Date: Copay: Coinsurance: 100% Medically Supervised Weight Loss Classes:0 My question is, and it's ok if you don't know I'm sure I will find out once the packet comes, but what does the "Medically supervised weight loss classes: 0" mean? That I've had none or don't need any? I ask because in a separate email there were links to videos I must watch on nutrition and quizzes I must take and I also DO need to meet with a dietician and of course the surgeon. It also goes over all the testing I will need to have done. I also wonder when the out of pocket money needs to come into play and if I can make payments on it and not need it all up front? Thanks!
  2. $9990 is what i have been quoted in Alabama @ Alabama Weight Loss. That includes the outpatient surgery, post op visits and surgery complication insurance. I have my consultation the 15th and will have more details. I will be self pay because my insurance has bariatric coverage but there is a 6 month waiting period and my BMI isnt high enough even with the comorbidities I have.
  3. Congrats!!! Yes, definitely noticeable differences! Did you already have your surgery or is the pre-surg weight loss?
  4. Thank you! I've been trying to drink as much water as I can but I really appreciate your response! Fingers crossed I'll get some of those 4lb loss days soon. Thanks again!
  5. Hi Everyone, I had the sleeve done at the end of December. I lost about 25lbs those first three weeks. As of today, I have gone three weeks without losing an ounce. I get that my body probably needed a break after that initial weight loss but is this normal to go so long without losing weight, this early? I usually eat between 600-700 calories a day. I'm not super active and find I get dizzy very easily when I exercise. Did anyone else experience this? Any thing I should be doing differently? Thank you in advance.

    Major Hair Loss

I know it sounds funny but my hair was my pride and joy! I used to get compliments on a daily basis. Now I am so embarrassed by the way it looks. I actually cry when I wash it because it just comes out in clumps. I can not even wear it down anymore. It is all uneven. It looks awful. I am seriously thinking of buying a wig.

    Major Hair Loss

I am seriously thinking of cutting it really short until it starts to grow back. I had short hair before and loved it. It was so much easier to take care of.
  8. The short answer is that the surgery makes it MUCH easier to eat substantially less. And your YMMV, but in my case, the surgery has also made it easier to make better choices of what to eat. My appetite and even cravings are blunted in intensity from what they were pre-surgery and therefore easier to manage. I still have to work to maintain the loss, but I have a fighting chance to succeed whereas prior to surgery, I really didn't. Keep sharing information with her and also let her see how eager you are to take this step. As her anxiety is assuaged, I'm guessing she'll support you and be really happy with your eventual results. Hugs. 🤗

    Gas! Ugghhh just Gassyyyy!

I feel your pain. My husband keeps asking if my smelly farts will eventually go away! I know that my gas is directly related to what I eat. If I sneak a few pieces of candy, or a cookie, or a muffin, I know I'm going to be miserable with gas pain. I'm trying very, very hard to change my snacking habits, but it is really hard. I eat according to plan up until about 7 pm. Then I find myself grazing on the wrong foods while watching TV. Hence, I end up farting all night long. I understand why my husband is frustrated! I know I'll never be able to sustain my weight loss until I change my relationship with sweets. I wish I didn't have it in the house, but my husband (who has never had a weight problem) considers cookies, pastries and donuts a staple of life! No excuse, since I'm responsible for myself, but I hope you can all relate to the temptation!!!
  10. all I can say is, I did the diet and exercise routine a gazillion times, lost at best 50-60 lbs (and those were during my more successful attempts - it was usually more like 15-20 lbs), stayed there for maybe a couple of months, and then gradually gained it back. This went on ....and on...and on....for DECADES (I'm in my 60s). I had over 200 lbs to lose, so I knew there was no way I was ever going to lose it if I couldn't even keep 50 lbs off. So I finally had to admit to myself that weight loss surgery was probably my only hope. So...I did it. I lost over 200 lbs in about 18 months, gained back around 10-20 (depending on the year and day - and a 10-15% bounce back after hitting bottom is unfortunately very common) and.....stayed there. And I'm still here. There is no way ON EARTH I could have done this without the help of weight loss surgery. Statistics show that less than 5% of people are able to take significant amounts of weight off and keep it off. It's a constant struggle because you are fighting biology. Weight loss surgery (WLS) really helps with that because your hunger hormones are lowered, your stomach is much smaller, etc. Granted, after the first year or two, it does become a challenge for most of us to maintain our losses, but it's much more do-able than it was pre-surgery. WLS doesn't guarantee you'll take off a significant amount of excess weight and keep it off, but it greatly improves your odds. I know you probably know all this already, though. Maybe your wife needs to do more research about weight loss surgery -what's involved, the benefits, the statistics including success rates of WLS vs. doing it on your own. Good luck with this - it's certainly much easier when your close family members are on board with it.
  11. Dr David Joseph did my sleeve he also does bypass, his office is in Newtown and from memory works out of about three private hospitals in NSW. I only had one recommendation but after my initial consult I felt quite assured by him. He also does liver transplants and I figured anyone who has the patience and skill to do that is going to do a good job of my conversion from a ESG to a VSG, and he did. Minimal pain (there was some discomfort from the incisions), very little gas, etc. Not very communicative in the months following the surgery but his office does answer questions if I have any, and I know from various reviews that if I had any issues he responses well. I travelled interstate and his office could haven't been more helpful in ensuring appointments lined up (particularly the initial appointment with him and the dietician, as well as the extra endoscope I needed because of my ESG. Assuming you have private insurance? I think out of pocket for bypass was about $4000, may have gone up by now though. Here is his weight loss clinic https://www.bodyfree.com.au/

    I am going bald!!!!!!

I think it started growing back after a month or two (it started falling out 2-3 months after surgery). It's not pretty because the new hairs are so short that they just look like frizz. I'm 6.5 months out now and the new hairs are about an inch long. A lot of people cut their hair short so there's less of a difference between the old hairs and the new ones, but that's not a look I can pull off. 😀
  13. Hi Everyone, I am eligible for a gastric bypass surgery (Diabetic with BMI> 35%). I struggled my whole life with yo yo dieting and my doctor has asked me to consider the surgery.. I am really excited but my lovely wife is not very supportive. I read about the weight regain and I shared my findings with her. Here's how the conversation went: Me: "After the first 12 months (honeymoon period), the weight loss will stop and eventually I need to purely rely on the lifestyle changes to maintain the weight. I need to eat healthy (no junk food), exercise, drink my 2L water, sleep early ... otherwise, I might regain all the weight back!" Her answer was: " so if eventually you will have to adopt a healthy lifestyle, then why don't you do that now? .. Sure you will need more time to lose the weight but you will have to change anyway and this must be easier than going thru the pain and risk of this surgery" I am not good at making lifestyle changes (that's why i am obese !) .. if it were simple, then i would have lost the weight already .. i am afraid I do the surgery, lose the weight and then simply regain everything again .. Do I make any sense? .. Any advice? ☹️ Rob

    I am going bald!!!!!!

I had surgery 6 months ago. I had already been experiencing hair loss, but it had had finally slowed down, then around 3 months post op it really started falling out. I have lost so much that my ponytail is now about the size of a pencil. I can't believe how thin it is.. I've always had very fine hair, but a ton of it, and it's curly, which also hid any thinness. Not anymore! The good news is, the hair loss seems to have slowed in the last month or two. My hair still doesn't seem to be growing yet, but at least it's not falling out so much now. I am 49 and also seem to be starting menopause, so I don't hold out much hope of ever having the head of hair I once did, but I'm hoping some of it will grow back. Until then, I have bought some hair toppers off Amazon, and one of those scrunchies made of fake hair and I put my hair up with it. I also use tinted dry shampoo to conceal my scalp. I hate the hair loss, but I would rather be completely bald than as fat and miserable as I was. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Major Hair Loss

It’s just your natural hair loss cycle accelerated because of your reduced food intake & the shock to your body from the change of diet, weight loss & surgery. You may also notice a change of texture from the anaesthetic too. As my surgeon said your body has better things to do with the nutrients you‘re consuming at the moment than growing hair. Your hair is already growing back but at its normal rate so not as quickly as you’re losing it. Stressing about it is probably making it worse. It will stop just give it time. Mine stopped at about 6 months when I started maintenance & was eating a little more. A lot of us cut our hair so the loss wasn’t as noticeable & the regrowth doesn’t have as much to grow to get to the same length as your hair.

    Major Hair Loss

I am experiencing the exact same thing and am terrified. My hair is my thing and long and curly, it's now very thin, straggly and straight. I discussed this with my dietician and I'm going on maintenance until it stablizes then I will go back on the program and loose 20 more. but slower. She said it's the rapid weight loss. I've lost 65 pounds and will be content with that for now. Right now, my hair is more important to me. I do take all the vits I'm supposed to and do get all the protein and water in and I still lost so much hair. She said I'm the poster child for weight loss surgery by doing everything I am supposed to, but without my hair, it's not worth it. She said it could take several months to start growing again. I've added more zinc just so I can feel like I'm doing something. She said it really won't help but it can't hurt.

    Major Hair Loss

Mine grew back. Started falling out around 3 months. You could see my scalp, YIKES. Slowed down to normal shedding rate around 6-7 months. After the hair loss, came the regrowth, and I had to go through months of all these little chicken hairs sticking up all over my head cuz they were too short to lay flat LOL. Am now at 2+ years out and its all back to normal, and the new growth is as just long as the surrounding hair....been this way for a while. P.S. My hair is almost shoulder length today. I had cut it super short when the shedding started to try to minimize the thinning look.

**BIG HUGS** I too loss my precious mom this past September. I’m still grieving her being gone from this earth. She knew I was going to have surgery. Which is now scheduled on the 17th. Though there’s not a day that goes by that i wishe she could be here for me. Doing EVERYTHING she could to help me be safe & heal comfortable. She also was a retired RN.... My family is very supportive but it’s nothing like your mommy... Good luck on your surgery.

    Major Hair Loss

I am very close to my 6 month post op, and am losing so much hair. I actually measure it each time I wash it, which is every 4 days. I get anxiety on hair wash day, because I am so afraid of losing more. It currently measures out to be 4-5 grams of hair loss each time. I used to have beautiful long, thick, curly hair. Now it is short, thin, and not so curly anymore. It has broken off so much of the length, as well as getting thinner. I know I was told that some hair loss was normal, but this is actually scary. Is there anyone else out there who this has happened to, but can tell me that theirs grew back? If so, how long did it take?

That’s what I like to hear, especially in these early owie days! How has maintaining your loss been for you?

    Regain 2 years out

I’m not as far out as many of you, but I stalled on weight loss for a long, long time (roughly 6 mo). I’ve found that if I plan meals in advance and just don’t touch sugar, I do so much better in overall daily calories. If I can reduce the number of choices I make around food, it’s just easier. Maybe Dr V is right? I’d just make sure that whatever food parameters you use, they are foods you enjoy (so you can stick with it)!

    I am going bald!!!!!!

Yeah, just about everybody loses hair after surgery, and there's not much you can do about it. It will grow back. I have fine hair to begin with, so it was pretty noticeable when it started thinning. It has started growing back and it looks terrible because all the new hair is so much shorter than the hair that didn't fall out, but at least my scalp isn't looking so bare anymore.
  23. fear and nervousness is common before surgeries, but you'll do fine! Hair loss is common after weight loss surgery, but there are some people who lose very little if any hair. And for most of us, you're the only one who'll notice it. Mine started around six months out and lasted three months - and it grew back (I didn't lose very much). I can tell you that for those of us who are a year or two (or more) out, the hair loss seems so minor in the grand scheme of things. Many people worry about it when they're pre-op and early post-op (I did, too!!), but now I wonder why I wasted even one brain cell worrying about it. It seems so insignificant now in light of all the positive changes my body has gone through.
  24. That’s insane ! I’ve maintained my weight loss for years. I eat anything and everything I want . I eat in moderation, I practice IF and I work out and I refuse to ever give up any foods I love . Your dietician is crazy !

    VSG BMI 30-40

I had my surgery after menopause and had great success with it. I was VERY committed, though - I followed my program to a "T". be aware that as a "light weight", your weight loss will likely be pretty slow. Many of us start off quite a bit heavier than you are, and generally, the heavier you are, the faster the weight will come off - at least at first. Just saying this because a lot of people expect to drop like 30 or 40 lbs the first month after surgery, which I think comes from watching shows like "My 600 lb Life". For most "normal" WLS patients, that's not a realistic expectation - and that goes doubly for you since you're much lighter than most of us are starting out. Not trying to discourage you - if you're committed, you'll lose the weight - but just don't get discouraged if you're not having the huge drops that you may see in other people. good luck with it - I'm really glad I did it and would do it again in a heart beat!
