    Can't Decide!

I believe the average weight loss for bypass is 65% & sleeve is 60% of the weight you were to lose at the 3year mark. Which is a pretty negligible difference. Bypassers tend to lose more quickly at the beginning but that is no guarantee of how fast you will lose at first as we all lose at our own rate & everyone’s rate of loss slows as you get closer to your goal. You can have a bypass & still be a slow loser & vice versa. My surgeon went through each surgery, pros & cons, but recommended the sleeve based upon my weight loss & gain history, my basic diet & eating habits, & general health which is where I was leaning anyway. You’ll lose weight regardless of the surgery you chose if you work the program. I exceeded my goal with a sleeve but there are factors beyond your control, like genetics, which play a big part in where you’ll end up. Like you will lose more & faster simply because of your gender.
  2. I totally feel your pain. I weighed 194 pounds when I had the sleeve done in May 2017. I lost all my extra weight within the first year and kept it off until Covid. I have regained all that I lost and then some. I weigh 225 pounds now. I have gained 100 pounds! I am so embarrassed by it that I refuse to visit family or friends.
  3. I had the same symptoms as ms.sss. At 3 & 1/2 months on Thanksgiving, I tried Ben and Jerry’s lactose free ice cream. I had 1/4 cup and it hit me half an hour later, maybe less. I’m finding any sugar/carby food can trigger it, or sometimes it’s a reactive sugar drop a few hours later. Air popped light salt popcorn triggered it last time. I was never diabetic. I find dumping does keep me on the straight and narrow which is good! If you do want to try new foods, it helps to be at home with a time block of a few hours and a protein shake to counter the sugar lows. For those who think dumping is a get out of jail free card; there’s no weight loss. There may be a slight loss sometimes, but it’s water from the both ends pushing it all out. Mostly I find I still gain weight and trigger an asthma attack from all the inflammation. I have even measured my ankles and found them to be 2-3 centimeters bigger the day after a carb incident.
  4. I’m remembering what it felt like when I miscarried. I felt like it was my fault. I felt like my body betrayed me. I felt alone because it wasn’t something you could talk about. I’m glad you said something, and I’m sorry for your loss. It wasn’t your fault, medically the offspring wasn’t viable, usually it’s chromosomal. Your body didn’t betray you, it was telling you something was wrong. As you move through your grief, I hope it brings you and your husband and family together. Treat yourself well and don’t be afraid of taking a deep reflection of your life choices. I found making small healthy goals to be helpful like brushing my teeth more, going to sleep earlier, and training for a 5k, then half marathon. Use all the healthy ritualistic habits in your back pocket, like drinking water all day or, regular prayer/meditation whatever that looks like for you. Eventually you will feel ready to tackle bigger goals like weight loss, a new career, to give meaning to the “why” of your loss. My deepest sympathies-Meg

    Psychology appt anxious

I got more questions doing a survey from my bank. I answered some basic questions. Family history etc My expectations for the weight loss. My concerns or fears of surgery or not being able to eat. If had support system and other surgeries etc that was that. 45 min of small talk. Don’t worry - they are more concerned of your attitude about a major surgery. Everyone is nervous.

    Food Before and After Photos

Ordered pizza for the kids after having a Mother’s Day photo shoot with my mom and siblings and giving her the ring my dad ordered for her before he passed away. Still managed a whopping 400 (approximate) calories for what I ate. However, I’m more shocked at the nearly 1300 calories my 7yr old (he’s below weight for his height because he never stops moving!)
  7. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Gretchel, that's so sad for you and your husband. It sounds like you did really well after your surgery and you can definitely do that again now. When you say eating healthy do you mean that you are tracking all your macros/everything you eat? Are you eating protein first at all meals, followed by veg and then if you have room a small amount of carbs? Are you avoiding drinking for half an hour before eating and at least half an hour afterwards? If not it might be worth going back to absolute basics. If you've been in maintenance for a long time you might have got used to eating differently. Some people here have got back on track after much bigger gains than 30lbs @GradyCat and others - good on you for nipping this in the bud. You have done so well before, you can SO do that again. Best of luck.
  8. I did not but I was a lower BMI to start and was worried I would lose Just enough to not qualify for surgery and then gain it all back like I always do. Many people do though. Anything you lose now is just less you have to lose later. Plus it is a good chance to start practicing what you will be doing post surgery.
  9. : 3 I appreciate it. I'm still dealing with a lot of body dysmorphia. I def have weight to lose still but I carry most of it in my hips and lower stomach.

    Dr Sanborn - Chattanooga TN

Hi everyone. Hope you all are doing well! I complete my post op next month and hope to get insurance approval and survey date. There is a lot of turnover at Dr. Sanborn’s office so having difficulty getting responses and calls returned from my coordinator. Any suggestions? Oh - I decided to have a bypass as it will allow me to loose the most weight and I’ve been feeling some reflux. Thanks again!
  11. I am scheduled for lap band removal/DS surgery on 5/23. Starting the pre-op diet on Monday. Eeeeek!! I was banded back in 2008. I'm 5'4" and my weight before surgery was 290-something. I lost about 130 lbs in the first year, and maintained at around 165-175 (for me this weight equated to around a size 10, which I was fairly pleased with) for almost 10 years. I had a Tummy Tuck in 2016 and believe that my band was nicked when the plastic surgeon moved my port. In any case i suffered a 'slow leak' in the band that my surgeon Dr. Elariny could not pinpont, even under fluoroscopy, and have not really had any restriction for the last 5 years. I have sloooowwwwlly gained back up to 215 lbs during that time. I'm scared to death and simultaneously super excited for the DS surgery.
  12. Hi everybody! I had my surgery (Gastric sleeve) on 01/08/18. Everything went well, I was 245 lb and i went down to 128 lb. I was feeling so good, so healthy, so happy.... I got married and my life was perfectly fine! Last year, in October I found out I was pregnant... Unfortunately on December i had a miscarriage. During my short pregnancy I had to be fully in bed. I gained 30 pounds! and now I can't go back to my normal weight. I am feeling so depressed, my doctor said that he can't help me because he only help with surgeries. so, I don't know what I can do! I am eating healthy, working out... drinking water.... Can someone help me? I am so depressed.... sad... without help :(

    May 2022 surgery?

Welcome. One of my daughters (who is a doctor) freaked out months ago when I told her I was ‘merely’ thinking of this. I’m not in the mood for confrontational conversations about this. I then was diagnosed with a very large hiatal hernia. I brought up that I would be having that repaired, and I’m not mentioning the GP. She is pleased with the fact that the hernia was diagnosed and will be repaired. That’s good enough for me. I could eat nothing and walk 5 miles or more a day, and I’d probably gain weight. My son was not happy about it, researched on his own, and was very impressed with the number of years this could add to my life expectancy. His findings mirrored what my cardiologist had told me. Good luck on your journey. Keep us posted.

    Liver shrinking DIET pre-RNY

I asked the surgery coordinator the same thing when we set up the 5/16 appointment? “You want me to start now? I could be 6-7 weeks out from surgery.” She replied: “Let’s see. Your BMI really isn’t that high, you could start it after you see him on 5/16 if you want. BUT, some of our patients like to start it as far in advance as they can.” 🤷🏻‍♀️I decided to start it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It gave me a chance to find a protein drink I really like. And, truthfully, I think my surgeon things I’ll opt for a surgery date like 5/20 if it’s available. But, I’m committed to staying in school till the students are finished which is 6/8. I’m not scheduling a date prior to that. I’m fine with it. It’s been good for me to see that the numbers on the scale are going in the correct direction, and I haven’t eaten my arms off yet. 🤣😂 It’s giving me time to develop coping strategies…I’m not an emotional eater, but I will pop something into my mouth simply because it’s there for the taking. I wasn’t always like that, but when the lbs started coming in, I figured what the heck…might as well enjoy it. This week was Teacher Appreciation Week and every.single.day thete was food EVERYWHERE: candy apples 😳, burgers and fries, bagels and cream cheese, donuts, you name it. I stayed away from the myriad of places where food was spread out and kept busy and focused. My assistant is a *itch who never eats anything and this week she kept bringing plates of food into our room. I ignored her. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess I started early more for me than anything else. I’m thrilled to see I’m losing on this plan, because in the past, I could cut back, walk incessantly and actually gain a pound after a month. 🤦🏻‍♀️ This has been good for me. 🤗

    OOTD

Wearing this cute set I bought in 2018 from a boutique. I finally fit back into it! Great for summer. Not at my goal weight yet and 3 months post op but surely getting there. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. I am scheduled to have my surgery on July 5th and I'm not sure if I should start to diet now to loose weight before surgery. What are your thoughts are you doing anything special to loose some weight before surgery?

    Can't Decide!

It’s really just a personal decision if there is not a glaring medical reason to choose one over the other. I am on medications and worried about absorption issues of bypass affecting them so I went with sleeve but I knew that I was possibly going to lose a few less pounds than I would with bypass. I think from my research the difference in weight loss between the two surgeries was only like 5-10% of excess weight which for me ended up being just a few pounds but I was lower BMI to start. If you eat a lot of sweets however the bypass could be even better for loss because you may dump on sugar which will help you stay away from them. But not everyone dumps from sugar so that’s not guaranteed.

    Liver shrinking DIET pre-RNY

You are starting the pre op diet already? Even before your surgery is scheduled possibily for mid June? seems very early especially with your low BMI. For most its 1 week or 2 weeks before surgery date. But of course i am no surgeon lmao. Good luck!! You loose weight pretty fast during the pre op diet. I lost i think 12lb during my two week liquid diet.

    Weight stall at 9 months

I am 8 months post op and just went through a 3 week stall. Increased exercise and really concentrated on recording my food intake as well as increased walking. I am back to losing. I am not stopping until at my ideal body weight. For years I thought it was impossible to be at ideal weight. After 105 pounds and 14 inches off my waste, 5 inches on my neck and countless other successes, I am going to push through stalls and refuse to settle at a weight my body tries to settle at. I am getting to less than a 25 BMI.

    Can't Decide!

im sorry to hear about your father.... I have been focused on the sleeve for months. I just need a significant weight-loss.. That is the only reason I have been thinking of changing to bypass.

    Can't Decide!

When I started my wls journey years ago, I went with the Lap Band, for a few reasons, but I feared Bypass because I thought it was too invasive and too permanent. Fast forward 7 years and I developed GERD and had my Band removed. Now I'm revising to Bypass due to GERD complications. After recently doing research on the Bypass for revision, I watched a YouTube video, and realized that my fear of Bypass was due to Lap Band marketing. So what I will say is, if you start out with Sleeve and have to be revised due to complications or other reasons, you might be "forced" into Bypass the same way I was. Now, no one knows what path their weight loss surgery journey takes us, but it's a theoretical "what if." I never thought I would end up with Bypass. But now I have no other options as far as weight loss and fixing GERD goes. And I've realized I probably could've made a better choice than Lap Band 9 years ago. When you actually research Bypass thoroughly, you'll find that although your disgestive tract is rerouted, it's reversible just like the Lap Band. Sleeve is revisable but not reversible. This video is quite informative and at around the 15 minute mark it discusses the marketing tactic that Lap Band used against Bypass. Best wishes on your journey!

    Can't Decide!

Thanks for the quick responses... 1. I dont know why im nervous about the bypass I think im just nervous in general and psyching myself out... 2. I dont have GERD of any acid reflux 3. My doctor was okay with either choice... He stated that for a bigger weight loss they used to always recommend bypass but sleeves are getting similar results....
  23. Im having a really hard time with this... I have had my mind set on going with the gastric sleeve for months. Now the past month right before surgery Im thinking more going bypass as Im seeing bigger weight loss.... I need to loose 200-230 lbs. I know they are both tools and will give me what I put into it but I dont want to get a life changing surgery if I am only going to loose some of what I need to. On top of that im really scared of the bypass for some reason....

    May Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone I am having surgery May 13. A revision sleeve. I had surgery 2016 lost 60lbs. Gain 25 back. I live in AZ and went to Mexicali MX . I checked out the hospital and had a barium swallow. The technique that was the first time did not take out the hunger hormones. He told me it was not my fault. There are two pockets that need to be trimed to correct the sleeve. I did not have to do a lot of prior testing. Xray, ekg, blood work, urine test. My insurance does not cover weight loss surgery. This surgery is higher than some places in MX but it's a nice hospital with a blood bank, ER, ICU ect. 6500.00. Anyone interested forming a Facebook group of our own set to private
  25. You will pretty much loose weight no matter what you eat up to the 6 month mark (unless you go crazy ) enjoy it while you can it's slows down very dramatically after the 6 month mark ( depending on your start weight of course) so my surgeon said expect to loose 30% of your body weight. Which I have done but I would still like to loose another 10kg.
