Best Type Of Exercise To Burn Fat?

Maybe the OP question is about burning fat instead of muscle because people are at higher risk for burning muscle during high intensity aerobic activity versus low aerobic activity, like walking, during weight loss. The WL endocrinologist who works with my surgeon pounds this into my head because I'm a high aerobic kinda person and I've always burn more muscle than fat every time I see him. So in terms of optimal weight loss, he would say low aerobic 30 minutes every day and resistance training ever other day never going more than 48 hours without resistance training. I'm in the camp of do what you love so I I do what I love at high aerobic activity and weight train and eat my protein with in 20 minutes of recovery. Just to be clear, this is about weight loss and not about maintaining.

Up 2 lbs, don't understand exercise & the cal deficit

Your weight fluctuates throughout the day, also - which is why having a set day/time to weigh yourself is the best plan if you're going to get emotional about the number. Most people do get emotional over that scale - either when it goes up or down!! I tend to weigh myself too often. Daily - sometimes twice a day - just to see the differences. And I can vary in weight as much as 10lbs in the same day!! Could be Water weight, could be related to your time of the month... could be alot of things! Also, it sounds like you're starving yourself. If your body thinks it's starving, it will hold onto the weight for dear life! This article might help: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html - from that article: If you are under-eating or go more than 4-5 hours without eating, your body will shift into fasting mode, slow your metabolism and conserve your stored energy (fat). This can contribute to a weight loss stall or plateau. Hope that helps! Try not to be so hard on yourself - if you're doing everything right, you WILL lose the weight.

Need exercise inspiration- 35 lbs from goal!

WOW. The end is in sight for you! 35 lbs! That is KILLER! You sound like me ... 5'8, size 18, but I weight a lot more than you. I'm many, many pounds away from my goal! I work out 5-6 days a week, running, elliptical, lifting, etc. Now, here's an idea: go buy a CUTE pair of size 16 jeans, shorts, whatever, since that is when you are getting PS. Make yourself a deal that when they fit, you'll set up the consultation (or some other reward). Try them on 3 days a week and work out! You might have to just gut it out and start exercising...maybe you need to change your focus since you are "comfortable" at a size 18 (it's not good enough for me yet). Work out for your heart, your lung capacity, to lower your cholesterol...take the next step to health ... the weight is almost all off, so now work on the stuff you can't see that will really cause you to be the most healthy you can be. Good luck! You should be so proud of your accomplishment! I'm totally envious!!!

Need exercise inspiration- 35 lbs from goal!

Hi There. Thanks for the post. What is your goal weight? My doctor and I set 185 as mine but according to the weight charts that is still considered overweight. I believe someone who is 5'8 should be more like 140-165. What is your goal?

    Saggy Skin after banding

I was curious...I am 28 yrs 5'5 and 215 old and have been athletic my whole life. I am over weight by about 80 pounds but still have really good muscle definition. I have had one child via c-section with minimal stretch marks...I am worried about possible saggy skin...My legs are really tight and muscular, I am not a flabby person, but I am curious if anyone who works out with cardio and weights 4-5 days a week like me has been banded and is tone and muscular with no saggy skin. My stomach is what I really worry about...I dont have rolls standing just sitting... Any advise?
  6. Don't Keep your Eye OFF that PRIZE! Anything you want in life thats worth anything is not going to be easy! I see that you have made changes to this journey you started a long time ago! I could have waited to get my date,,, but I know the anticipation you are feeling,,, just know now is the time to deny that love obsession for the foods you can't live with out! REALLY,,,, I know you want this band and I encourage you to continue ur efforts,,, but we all have bad habits that has brought you to the idea that you need help loosing this extra weight. You have time to understand the types of foods u should be eating and the amounts whichARE VERY small. I eat less than 500 calories per day and I take in about 75 grams of protein; I work out 3 to 5 x per week,, but i move alot more easily than I did before! I would like to quote another Bandster (don't remember her name) she said," I wish I would have had the surgery a long time ago, it is very painful to heal, But I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!" You must take this BANDING TOOL and use it as all successful Bandits have, make better food choices, eat to satiety( satisified NOT STUFFED), learn to eat for 30 min taking one small bite at a time and find a whey Protein (in take 60- 80 grms per day no more!) that you can tolerate, then go to this web site and look for sugar free syrups to add to ur shakes, and ideas for new recipes! Good luck on your Journey, though ur not an Offical Bandster,,, I will offer any help to encourage the fact that your Banding date is closer than you will expect! http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/ God Bless!
  7. My doctor wanted me to try and get my Protein in from the very beginning- and I was released with a Clear liquids plus protein drinks order. However, I could hardly drink anything for the first five days- I set the alarm on my phone for every fifteen minutes and measured out 2-4 ounces and drank it. It was tough! At day five drinking became much easier and I started getting all my protein in from that point as I am a complier by nature and I am determined to make this work for me. Though some of the drinks I had liked pre surgery were now disgusting to me I did find a couple that worked and I had at least two a day plus added some greek yogurt and milk to my Soup etc. ( went to thin liquids after a week) and have gotten 70-80 grams since day five. I suggest ordering different samples for sure- I like the Chike meal replacements- they are very tasty and though they have about 8 net carbs they are great for the first few months . I also second Unjury- their unflavored protein is great to add to soup and other things and the chicken soup is an absolute Godsend because believe me you will get really sick of sweet protein drinks! Everyones tastes differ so you wont know what works for you until after- I advise you to have lots of samples on hand and don't stock up too much in case you hate the things you formerly liked. The reason, btw, that my doctor wants you to have protein from the start is to keep your energy up and especially with the lower calories you tend to take in during this phase, to be sure you don't start burning muscle instead of fat. It is never too soon to start the right chemistry for weight loss! Good luck to you!

    Support Please!

I know the feeling, I cheated everyday for example I had a bowl of Soup that had a little bit of veggies in it. I had a V8 I had some salad, also coleslaw, no sugar no bread, I have lost about 12 lbs so I am doing my job as far as weight loss goes. It isn't even that I am hungry I just can't stand this taste in my mouth. So try and focus on the positive and what you can have. I know it is very hard. Good luck Kathy

    Backwards question?

When I started going to the local support group while in pre-op, I met a lot of people in different stages of their journey. A common thread among those who were less than a year post-op had this vigilante, "I'm never eating carbs again and I'm never going to even tempt myself with candies, Cookies, Snacks and I'm always going to work out 3-5 days a week; I cannot FAIL at this drastic decision!!" And most of the members who were 2+ years out would comment with "your surgery was a tool, not a punishment and you have to be realistic about maintaining the weight loss because no matter the size of your stomach, you're still human." I was confused as to why the huge discrepancy between ideas about the way one should eat after surgery. But the further out I am post-op the more it makes sense. I realize the idea behind remaining strict on diet is the fear of slipping into bad habits and the idea of going a little lax on the diet is a human reaction to enjoying pleasure. Never having a cookie is extreme. Having a homemade cookie that you have prepared using great ingredients, tweaking the recipe to include less sugar, less carbs, more Protein is the balance between the two. I believe balance and moderation is the key to long term success. It is something that is taught months before surgery and in most of us will be "perfected" months after surgery. You (general) have to know what fuels your desire to have a cookie and changing those behaviors to ensure a cookie is just a cookie and not a coping mechanism.

    4 years out

Is anyone on here post op 4 years or more? Just checking to see how everything is and if there has been any weight gain. It gets so much harder the further out you are. I lost 175 lbs but in the past year gained about 15 lbs back from my lowest. It is extremely hard to lose weight now and I feel like I eat like a normal person again. And I feel like I'm hungry all the time. This is making me nervous. I try eating healthy and exercising but doesn't seem to be helping.

    Starting To Get Really Anxious!

Similar situation here... Today I go to my last appointment. Tuesday is my scheduled date but I have a Cardiologist today and last week I received a denial from my insurance because the surgeon's office forgot to send proof of my nutrition/support/exercise classes for the last 4 months. I find it hard to believe that the insurance will get back to my surgeon in less than a week to give him the go ahead but I guess stranger things have happened. Up until this incident, everything was going smoothe. I feel the same way you are, anxious, nervous, excited, nauseous... Wish I had a looking glass to see the outcome. I have been journaling throughout this experience so that I have something to look back on... Those days I feel like cheatn, not exercising, or plateau, I will pull out my journal and see how hard this journey has been... Oh hell no, I don't want to be back at this weight ever again... Good luck and God bless!
  12. There may be 3 phases to RNY weight loss. In the first phase, you are consuming very few calories right after surgery (around 700) and the weight melts away very quickly. In my case, I lost 80 pounds after surgery in 7 months. The second phase is a Maintenance phase. It might be described as a Honeymoon phase. If one consumes within a caloric band, weight is maintained. For me this band is around (800-1500 calories per day). This is a happy state. I tend to go with the upper end of this caloric band. It gives me a lot of choices and freedom. But I am told there is a third phase. I will call this phase The Long Haul. This occurs around a year and a half, when the stomach heals and absorbs more calories. The stomach goes from 70% to 100% absorption. Since I am not quite at the year and a half mark, I haven't experienced this phase. If that is the case then I will need to reduce my caloric intake to adjust and that might be difficult. It's like a hidden trap and perhaps it is the reason why some people fail. There are some individuals that maintain a tight control during the Honeymoon phase on the lower side of the caloric band, and they should be fine. We will see how it affects me when I reach this phase.
  13. I'm on my pre surgery liquid diet and I've lost 20 lbs in a week. Today I stepped on the scale and gained 2 lbs. Has anyone else experienced this?

    healthy eating/water

Yes it's like if you would've known then what you know now. Actually I first had a lap band first and did well at first but of course eventually went back to my old ways and gained 50lbs. But even know with the sleeve I say why couldn't I just right from the beginning instead of putting myself through this
  15. Hello all, I had the lapband 9/15/08 and have lost 30 lbs, still a few till my goal. I am over 50 and have a question for those gals over 50: Have you experienced hot flashes due to your weight loss? Or is this a menopause thing?? Mixed up.. thanks:smile:
  16. You are absolutely right- you do not have restriction. If you did, you never would have been able to eat that much food. However, I think your choices were right on. Lots of people on this forum say they didn't loose weight until they got restriction. Just tell your doctor how it's going. He should do a fill for sure. If not, find a new doctor!
  17. Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and I have so many questions about banding, I don't even know where to begin! First off, I am a 24 year old, 5'8", 250 lb woman who has been overweight her entire life. I have always been self-conscious and have allowed my self-esteem issues to interfere with my life in many ways. I am happily married to a great, supportive man, but I still feel like something is missing: my self-confidence and confidence in my future health! I have gained and lost, gained and lost with many different diets, calorie counting, and exercise programs and after each attempt I usually end up heavier than when I started. This year alone I yo-yoed from 240 up and down several times and here I am around 250. Basically, I don't have any other major health problems (YET), but I am 100lbs over my "ideal" weight (even though BMI is 38). My major question is: do I currently qualify for lap-band surgery? Does anyone have a similar story? What is the first step I should take in order to pursue this? I have done a lot of research about this surgery, and I do understand the commitment involved, and that is really why I feel this would be good for me: it is a commitment that I can't just give up on. Anyway, any input would be greatly appreciated! Congrats to everyone who is meeting their goals with this surgery -CatLady

    Doctor's Appt. Set!

I see my regular doctor this week, but I see Dr Vaughn next week. I'm beyond excited and hope something can be done. I'm only 28, standing 5'3", and weighing in at 300+lbs! My doctor and I have done everything, and I still can't lose weight!
  19. hey guys, my name is Josh im 26 and from Louisville Ky, I am 4 years post op (july 2, 2008) I started at 402, and got down to 280, and since then have gained 30 to 40 lbs back!, I HAVE NOT been doing what I am supposed to do, and have little to no restriction. Should I go on liquids for 3-5 days to shrink my pouch down? and then get back on it hardcore and get the rest of this weight off? I have a baby on the way and I need to be healthy! any help, guidance, or similar experiences is greatly appreciated! 2007 2011
  20. I had my surgery at the start of May 2013, so heading in to winter here ... and yes, I froze my butt off. Actually, since my rather ample bum pretty much disappeared as soon as the weight started to drop off, I really did freeze my butt off! Anyway, I was glad it was winter because I was able to wear thermals and layers without anyone looking at me like I was some sort of freak! Even that first winter was quite tough ... I still felt the cold, something I'd never had a problem with before. I guess most of us who are fairly, um, well upholstered, generally feel the heat more than the cold. My internal thermostat seems to have reset itself now, and by the time the second winter after surgery rolled around, I was all good.

    PreWorkout Eating/Food Idea

call your dietician If you need a different food plan to support your fitness level. Give them your current calories, calories burned, and How much you train per day. I agree with @Ellf Try eating carbs on your plan with protein before and after your workout. (after can be a protein shake) Stay within your weight loss calories/carb range to keep your body in weight loss mode.
  22. Jaide...I am going to answer your questions...but first DON'T I repeat, DO NOT drink pop/soda!!!!! That can distend your pouch and cause slippage, especially in the early stages when scar tissue is still forming around the band. OK, with that said. Yes! It is VERY normal to feel no restriction until the right amount of fill is achieved. I JUST reached optimal fill (hope it lasts) on this last fill, last Tuesday. I was banded June 1st. It took a lot of will power to lose weight. I would have lost more if I had better control of my cravings, but yes, I gave in several time and ate too many calories, and it was easy to do because I didn't have enough restriction. It took me 4 fills, with the last two making a difference. Hang in there, the early stages take a lot of patience, but it gets MUCH better!
  23. I lost 22 pounds from my pre-op diet (South Beach) to my first fill which was exactly 4 weeks out from surgery. Even though you don't have a fill, your band is swelled from 1-2 weeks, so it was like having a fill in. My doc primed me with 3cc for my surgery, so I had restriction for the first two weeks which helped with the weightloss. From my first fill to my second fill I lost 6 pounds in three weeks. And from there I have averaged 5-8 pounds a month.. a great healthy weightloss, but I prefer not to be too tight to where I can't eat healthy foods in small portions. In MY opinion, when people say they've only lost 3-4 pounds in several months.. they aren't doing it right.. period.. they need to get honest with themselves. I have a friend who is going through this right now and she sits around eating pizza.. Pasta... chinese buffetts... chips and all sorts of crap and it's because she's scared to go get a fill because she doesn't want them knowing what she's been eating.. well, if you don't go get the fills, you will not be successful , unless you are one of those rare people who never need fills.. but those people are pretty rare. Anyway, this happens a lot.. people get off the bandwagon, don't get their fills and slip away, and then later blame the band... the band is the last thing that should be blamed... if the doctor doesn't talk to them about these things.. then it is their fault and the banded person's fault. My doctor told me up front.. if you gain weight or are scared to come, don't! we won't be mean.. we will just try to get you back where you need to be. Disclaimer: there are other reasons for no weight loss.. leak in band.. band slippage.. just wanting to throw that out there for folks who this has happened to, but a simple barium swallow can bring this to light. To me, my band is my little miracle. I have tried so much stuff and it never worked,. I was addicted to breads and greasy crap. Fast food... pasta... I have NO desire to eat those things anymore.. none.. every now and again I treat myself to half a shake and because I needed my fill I got today I ate some naughty sweet stuff recently and luckily it didn't affect me very much... BAM, get the fill.. happy again.. no cravings.. Sorry for the long response.

    Snacking

@@francheskii I couldn't agree more with Djmohr! We were taught at Mayo to have 3 meals and 2 high Protein Snacks every day. That's what I've done and at 5 months post-op it's working just fine. I'm never hungry and get an average of 120-125 grams of protein in every day while staying between 800-850 calories. I've included a page out of my "Nutritional Guidelines" book given to us which breaks down every stage of the diet. Hope it helps. Congrats and keep on your successful weight loss journey

    Newbie

Hi Everyone, My name is Paulette, I am 48 yrs. old and am scheduled to have surgery on May 7th. Needless to say I am very nervous. I have been going through all my testing since January of this year. Everything is done up to this point. I met with my surgeon last Wednesday and was very excited when he gave me a "date". The only catch is that he wants me to follow the South Beach Diet and keep a journal and bring it in and get weighed at least two times before my sugery to see if I can follow a diet. He said that if I haven't followed it as well as he thinks or if I should gain weight, he will cancel the surgery even if it is the day of. I totally have no problem what he is asking me to do. He explained to me that he wants me to get used to following a diet plan so after the banding I will not fail. However, how do you get over the feeling of wanting to eat everything in sight because you feel like you will never have those foods again? Sorry this is so long for a 1st post but I have been coming to this site for a month or so now and was nervous to post anything. You have all answered many questions that I have had and I hope I continue to get support from all of you before my surgery. Thanks!
