  1. The recommendation was to walk at least every 4 hours. I feel like I get up way more often than that but haven’t timed it since the first week. My doc gives you a shot in the hospital for blood thinners and then a pill for 30 days to help with blood clots too!

    New surgery date!!

My two week liquid pre-op liver shrinking diet was by far the hardest part of this process for me. Everyone hates it. It is terrible, no sugar coating it. But if you can get yourself through that, good times ahead. Good luck!

    Surgery postponed

Did they open you up and close you back up? or did you get a scan of some kind to see the liver? but the best way to shrink the liver is the liquid diet we get put on. some are put on it for a few days while others for weeks. the longer the better to shrink the liver.

    Worried about getting surgery

Thank you everyone. I do tend to overthink things. It just scares me because it's irreversible, but I also don't want to continue the life of yo-yo dieting. I see my surgeon on Thursday next week so I will definitely voice my concerns with him and go over my options.

    Kevin's WLS Journey

6/22/22 - I received a call from the surgeon’s office that they got the go ahead from the insurance. I was instructed that I would need to complete some on-line courses, sign some paperwork and pay the $400 co-pay, prior to scheduling the surgery. I was able to print, sign and scan the paperwork and send back via e-mail. I took the online courses, which rehashed almost everything I’ve been told to date. My patient navigator says she had everything and will be moving my chart to the scheduling office and that scheduling will reach out to me within a few days. More waiting... 6/23/22 - Thankfully the scheduling office called back this afternoon and finally, we can schedule surgery. July 14th is the day I get my sleeve. I do not have a pre-op diet plan, although the day before surgery is to be clear liquid only. 7/11/22 - I went to the surgical center for my pre-op appointment. They did an EKG, Chest x-ray and took a few tubes of blood. No one told me to fast and no one asked me if I fasted, so hopefully they won’t have issues with my blood samples, since I had a few beers on Sunday. My weight is up from the weekend, but I am planning to be good for the next three days. Now that I'm caught up, I guess my next post will be on my surgery day.

    Kevin's WLS Journey

5/13/22 - I had my visit with Cardiologist. I got an EKG and saw the doctor. They scheduled me for a Transthoracic Echo (heart ultrasound thing?) and a stress test at the hospital on May 18, and I have a follow up with him on June 3. 5/18/22 - I had my Echo-thingy and stress test at the hospital. Everything went well I think. The stress test was telling. I got my heart beat up to 137 in three minutes, and did another minute on the treadmill before asking if I could call it quits. It took me 4-5 minutes to get my breath. I am so out of shape, but at least my heart didn’t explode. 6/3/22 - I had the follow up with Cardiologist. What a waste of time. Cost me $40 co-pay for him to say I was good to go for the surgery. He wants to see me in 6 months and says I might be able to get off some of my medicines. We’ll see if I make the appointment. I called my patient advocate at the surgeon's office to tell her I had finished all my appointments. She was still waiting on clearances from my cardiologist and my primary. I’ll call back on Monday. In the mean time I'll call my primary and find out why they haven't sent their clearance letter yet. 6/5/22 - I had a chat with my neighbor’s wife this weekend. She got her sleeve a few years ago. It’s kinda scary to think about my life after surgery. I’ve been drinking beer for years and I enjoy socializing with friends. I enjoy eating. These things are going to have to change. I am not going to be able to drink beer anymore, or at least I probably shouldn’t. I'm thinking about vacation in August. If I get my surgery in early July, I will miss out on that fresh Iowa sweet corn. I'm thinking about fantasy football drafts. Tailgating for the Saints' games and Talladega in early-Oct. This is going to be a challenge if I can’t drink alcohol. Sigh. 6/7/22 - Only 3 days till my 3rd/last visit with the surgeon. I checked with the office and found out they had no received the clearance from the cardiologist. I scanned a copy of the letter and sent it via e-mail. 6/10/22 - I weighed myself at home and I am down to 295.8. That's 21 pounds I've lost since March. At the surgeon’s office, one of the ladies behind the counter seemed excited for me since they had all the documents. I signed all the consent forms with the doctor, but they have to send the package to BCBS and we will have to wait a few weeks to get the final okay before we can schedule the surgery. Hah. Just when I thought the waiting was over. LOL.

    Kevin's WLS Journey

4/22/22 - I couldn't get an appointment with my doctor unless I wanted to wait for a few weeks, but was able to schedule one with the office's Nurse Practitioner. She was able to set up a chest x-ray and blood work, and sent a referral for the cardiologist. 4/26/22 - I had my Psych evaluation over a video/phone conf app. I'm not sure what I think about this part of the process. If you ask me, the psychologist was pretty nosey a bit judgy. At least that's over. She gave me some rules to follow and I took some notes. I think she kind of crossed over into the dietician's swim lane, but whatever. One of her rules/suggestions was to utilize support, which is one of the reasons I'm in here doing this. 5/2/22 - I had my appointment with the dietician. She seemed nice, but she also seemed strict. This is something about me. I do not deal in absolutes. I do not like to use words like Never and Always, but that's how it was with her. We'll see how this goes. 5/9/22 - I had the EGD procedure. The same surgeon that's doing my sleeve also did this procedure. I was under anesthesia for it and felt fine afterwards. I remember telling the surgeon I hoped they cleaned that scope since the last time they used it for a colonoscopy. 5/10/22- My second visit with the surgeon. I weighed 303.6 at home, and at the afternoon appointment I weighed 306.5. So I was down 10 pounds since my 4/10/22 visit. I vainly asked if we could schedule the surgery, but they said I have to get everything done before they could send the package to the insurance company for approval. More work to do.

    About to do this thing...

Congratulations on all the hoop jumping and your upcoming surgery. Some advice you didn't ask for: The first weeks after surgery can be a pain, literally and figurately. Be prepared mentally, this too shall pass. You may have absolutely no issues, but be prepared for the worst. Follow your plan. I hope it is a rational plan and not a crash diet, but which ever it's the plan you signed up for, so follow through. Get off the scale. You don't need it messing with your mind. You know if you are following your plan. Just keep doing that. The scale will lie to you. Don't compare your loss to others. You will be losing weight faster than you ever have, yet it will feel slow. Celebrate your successes and forgive your failures. Good luck, Tek

    Almost 9 years out...

Congratulations on your success. Route 44 Slushie Lime Ade... a special treat we do about once a month, along which Church's chicken. :sigh: My surgeon approached the 30 minute thing as more of a suggestion than hard and fast rule. I drink when I'm thirsty, and I sip a bit during meals. It's not the end of the world to do your own thing if you are doing well. Anemia does seem to be a Gastric Bypass thing, at least it was for me a couple times over the years. Passing out is fun. I put a hole in the wall with my head once. Iron usually does the trick. I take slow-FE just once a week which seems to do the trick. Good luck, Tek

    Worried about getting surgery

You are over thinking it as we all did, I had gerd before surgery I was on 40mg nexium as well as gaviscon liquid and tablets just to keep on top of it. I now take 20mg nexium and that's it and I am not sure I even need that but haven't been game to come off it yet. My surgeon said weightloss would help my gerd which it did. I have noticed the people who get gerd and revise to bypass also had a substantial weight gain as well. I have had zero issues with keeping food and drink down, had a few little omg I shouldn't have eaten/ drunk that so quick but after a few minutes it's all good and you don't do it again lol but honestly I a a week away from 12 months and I have zero problems. At the moment I am recovering from covid and I am suffering from lack of desire to eat or drink and have a bit of nausea but that's from covid not surgery.

    July 2022 peeps!

Unfortunately shortly after this post, they had to push my surgery back a week. What would have been last Wednesday is now coming up this Thursday, the 14th. Just finishing day 12 of the 2 week pre op diet. Dying. lol

    Surgery postponed

I wasn't able to follow the two week diet and ate up to the last day. I was told by a friend who also had this done to drink two bottles of Magnesium 48 to 24 hours before your surgery. I did just that to but the down side your bm turns into water.
  14. So you actually do have your restriction it’s just that it occurs with a certain behaviour. The power of the restriction does fade over time. We learn behaviours to avoid it & your body learns how to process what you eat more effectively like how we can eat more as we progress. I still have my restriction at three years out but I only feel it if I’m not careful say if I eat too quickly or drink too much & then I know about it.

    July 2022 peeps!

4 day Post opt. July 7th. My original date was supposed to be June 22 but my father pasted away on the 18th of June and I had to post pone my surgery for an additional two weeks. I ate up to the last day and stopped just to make sure I had room for those two drinks I had to do on top of drinking two bottles of Magnesium so I cam flush out my system right away. I am allergic to anesthesia so when they gave it to me they also gave me a Steroid. My surgery was at 8am and I was up by 11:30am. Tons of heart burn from steroid but the hospital took care of that right away. They feed me pain killer through my IV which made me have the best sleep ever. Fast forward four days now and I have alreadyost 16lbs, have a lot more energy and sticking to my diet plan. I am so ready for food but I know that will have to wait until my check up next week. Only thing that sucks is wearing long dresses. I am not a dress girl, I like my jeans but my Stitches have to heal. I am happy that I decided to do this.

    Worried about getting surgery

I had the sleeve done 12/2021. I was scare about GERD as well. My doctor said I had a small hernia and I've had GERD for over 30 years. However, it seems that since my surgery I don't have it as bad. I take Nexium once or twice a week and that seems to help me. I also take a good probiotic. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi all, new here! My surgery was on July 5th! To those who still are waiting, in my opinion, the gas once I woke up in recovery was the worst, but will subside over the first two days. A week out now and I’m feeling pretty good, with a lot of energy! I hope the same for all of you!
  18. Hi there! I got my VSG surgery last week on July 7th. After two days of gas pain (woof I did NOT love that,) I have been having, honestly, a pretty easy go. The biggest complaint I have is my incisions are itchy haha! However, I have been having a LOT of anxiety over aiming for perfection: eating exactly what’s on my meal plan, exactly the right amount, and doing everything exactly right. Today, it stressed me out, which caused me to have a mini caving moment of having half of a gluten free cracker (chewed very slowly). Now, I don’t think that’s a huge deal, or will stretch my stomach and stitches open, but I am wondering do others struggle/struggled with following the rules to a T? And if you fail at doing so, what do you do. I think I’m freaking mainly because I’m internalizing my weight gain as not following rules, and now to get the results I HAVE to. thanks
  19. In three days, July 14, 2022, I am scheduled to get my sleeve. My insurance company had me jumping through hoops for over three months to get to this point and I am excited to get this thing started. I've lost weight before by restricting calories and carbs, but I would eventually lose motivation and the weight would come back. Twelve years ago I dieted and went from 250 to 198, before I gained it all back. Nine years ago I went from 250 to 184, and I gained all of it back, plus a bunch more. In 2020 I was at my highest weight, But two years of working from home, I had gained another 25 lbs. Wearing gyms shorts, t-shirts and flip flops has been great, but there's no motivation like having to put on some khakis that don't fit and a tight polo shirt to drive into the office. My pants won't stay up and it looks like I am carrying a sack of groceries under my shirt. Embarrassing. That was the end of March and that was when I decided to talk to a surgeon.
  20. My surgeon is based in Medellin. He is board certified in Colombia, did a fellowship in the US, and active in various plastic surgery boards and committees as well as teaching. But his cost was a fraction of what your quote is. I honestly feel like $20-25K is egregiously overpriced and total gouging because you are American. As far as aftercare, I stayed in a very nice 2 bedroom, 2 bath Airbnb for $40/nt and could have hired a nurse for $40 per 8 hr. So the two weeks stay with nursing is not worth more than $2K. I have followed and researched Colombian surgeons for a few years now, so feel free to pm me if you want to discuss further
  21. Silly kitty, If you don’t mind me asking, where did you go in Columbia? One of the things I liked about this surgeon is he is board certified in the US and is a teaching surgeon and maintains US credentials as well as Columbia credentials. it also included onsite nursing care hotel stay for two weeks and some other items. I am just starting my search for plastic surgeons. I knew all of them in Toronto and Philly when I was there. so it was easy now it is a whole new ball game

    Losing more weight NOT exercising???

I think there are two parts to it. 1. As someone mentioned, exercise tends to increase water retention as muscles hoard it to help with inflammation. 2. Part of weight loss stalls is that your body adjusts to your routine. When you stop exercising for a few days, you change the routine, forcing your body to re-evaluate. I've experienced the same phenomenon with my exercise and have decided that I will live with the slowed down weight loss to be in better overall health (my blood pressure and resting heart rate numbers are great).
