  1. My BMI was on the low end and my knees were only beginning to hurt and only with vigorous exercise so I was kinda like you. It wasn’t like I was unhealthy. but I knew that I was gaining weight year after year so it was only a matter of time before my knees hurt worse and limited my movement more making me gain even more weight and that would limit me even further. It was just beginning but it was going to snowball out of control. There were other reasons that I did it though, I was sitting out of things because I was embarrassed of my size or I didn’t have anything to wear that I felt good in and stuff like that and Despite all the crazy diets I tried i was only going to gain more. I am now over a year out and I had very little pain post op and no food intolerances or anything like that. I did not lose as much weight as I hoped. I reached my first goal which was an easy one but couldn’t reach the second. I am on meds that make weight loss a little more difficult. My point is that I did not get to my dream weight but I am still VERY glad that I did it because I am at least comfortable at this weight to go out and live my life again.

    OOTD

I love to see this thread, it makes me dream, this weekend, for the first time I dared buying smaller clothes, I am waiting for the delivery and want to try them right away. I had saved some clothes I liked 1 or 2 smaller sizes than my pre-op size, but even those are staring to feel too big. I am leaving the "X" world for the first time in 17 years, and I feel un-safe. What if I regain the weight like it happened many times before?! I am starting to feel hungry again, I notice I can eat more than the 2 oz per meal/snack. It is scary!
  3. When I had my surgery done, I knew I wanted it and it was almost a life or death decision for me. I wanted a life that did not include bad knees, breathlessness and diabetes. I was so embarrassed of my weight that I never went outdoors. For me it was a no brainer. I paid as quick as I could. I had a rough ride in the beginning but I am over it now and away and pacing. I am so happy with my choice. I cant make your fears go away but I can show you some more success stories. Go and look at the before and after threads. They go back 20 years and give wonderful motivation. Millions of people have had this done and very few of them have problems. I don't know the numbers. All I can say is if you have doubts, wait until you are 100% ready. You know when you know !
  4. Hello! I too was like you, lucky to not really have any health problems. I did have borderline high blood pressure. Also, GERD which may or may not be weight related. But, I justified it by knowing my family genes and that my time would be coming. Everyone is my family is obese and they ALL have a list of health problems. I knew if I didn't do something to loose weight and keep it off that my day was coming. I would wake up and have all kinds of issues. I am not about 7 weeks post-op and I have NO REGRETS! There is also risks because because you are healthy the risks get lower. You have to do what is right for you but I am pro surgery!
  5. you are reaching your first stall... you will have more stalls along your journey. I am 3 weeks post op and i am currently in a stall. I have not lost weight in almost a week and actually gained about a pound. It will run its course and will loose again.
  6. Hi! I know I'm "new" to all of this. I'm 13 days post op. The first 5 days after surgery, I had lost 7.5 lbs. By the 7 day mark, I had hit a 9 lb weight loss. I was SO EXCITED so I figured I'd weigh myself maybe every 4 days after the 7 day mark. I was REALLY looking forward to my progress, and I was so shocked by the original fast weight loss I just couldn't help myself. Keep in mind -- I'm STILL on the all liquid diet. Well, the last 6 days, I have lost 0 lbs. ZERO! I' got down to 244.0 lbs, then days later 244.5 lbs and today 245.4 lbs. So technically speaking I've actually gained 0.9 lb. HOW?! Can someone help explain? Is this normal? I'm following all the rules. The only thing I'm not doing anymore is working out since I haven't gotten the clearance, but I can totally go on long hour walks as my "exercise" for now. That's the only plan I have at this moment... My other confusion and worries lie in this: If I'm on the all liquid diet still, and I'm post surgery, IF I haven't lost ANY weight in the past week, I'm already getting nervous/anxious for when I am allowed to eat solid foods (hopefully starting tomorrow) and how maybe I'll gain weight.

    Pre Op Jitters...

It sounds like you are similar to me. I didn’t eat a lot of junk food or anything. I just ate a lot, period. I have to admit now that the hunger hormones are back this has been a challenge with the sleeve because you technically can eat a small amount and then eat again on an hour if you want to. Thing is, now that I have lost the weight I am committed to staying this size and that somehow gives me the willpower to not just eat to eat like I used to. In the beginning it’s easier cause most of us lose the hunger hormone so you can lose the weight.
  8. Initial appointments today! Meeting with my Bariatric surgeon at 10:30 am, appointments with the dietician and exercise specialist after!!!! I’m so anxious, excited, nervous. Ready to do this, been waiting a long time. The health issues have piled on as of late and my weight keeps climbing. Starting weight today of 284.2 pounds, height 5’1” and BMI 53.7.
  9. Been overweight since puberty. Starved to lose weight to be a normal teenage girl. i walked and jogged and starved. Had two boys by 23 yrs old. Gallbladder removed at 23 years old. Gained weight afterward. Divorces and lifes ups and downs along with the scale. Ate Atkins/Keto for seven years. Fell off and back on occasionally. Went from 236 in 2013 to 184 in 2015. Moved to NC and lost to 179 after Covid. Put that back on and then some. Hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy 2004. No hormone replacement therapy due to family hx. of ca. Struggle with Keto last seven years. Cannot eat "normal" without gaining weight. So sick of struggling. Hope that this surgery will be a great tool to get back to my "fighting weight" of 135. I am 5'2 3/4" I now have fibromyalgia, osteo arthritis, UCTD, Sleep Apnea, high cholesterol, and occasional high bp and inflammation in my hands, legs, etc.. Its time to get healthy again. If any of you are approximately 200lb or any weight for that matter, I would love to pen pal. I have pre-op jitters. Scared the closer May 24th approaches. I want this but the rest of my life with this WOE scares me so much. I have a really good appetite and I am afraid of failure.

    Weight loss stall

My advice would be to lower your calories. We are still in our honeymoon period for losing this weight. Go back to getting your liquid via shakes and then minimize additional calories by drinking water. Make sure you're taking all of your vitamins. I have minimal interest in food all throughout the day, so I just make sure to meet my protein range before introducing other food in the evenings.
  11. My husband and I grew up in two very different households when it came to food. Our relationships with food are very different. In his 40's, he's been on occasional diets but he's not that concerned with his weight. It is what it is. I grew up dieting from the age of 9/10. There are many days that I only eat maybe one meal a day. On the other hand, he wakes up hungry, wants to call and talk about dinner at 9am, calls at 1 to ask about what I had for lunch and reconfirm dinner plans, and wants to know when we are eating dinner before I can put my purse down most nights. Yesterday was Mother's Day and while I don't have to start my pre-op until June 1, I have started a pre pre-op diet for myself. He just couldn't understand that I didn't want to go out to eat. I relented and we went. The place served bread which I didn't touch, my husband and kids shared an appetizer that I couldn't/didn't have, then salads before our entrees came out. I made a smart aleck comment of "Thank you for letting me know how much I'm appreciated by bringing me to a restaurant to watch y'all eat." Yes, it was petty, but I don't know how to get him to understand that this is a permanent change for me and restaurants are not really something for the foreseeable future that I'm going to enjoy. Thanks for any advice.
  12. It is pretty quick once you complete all the requirements but many people if they are going through insurance are required to do a 3-6 month medically managed weight loss attempt. It’s just an insurance hoop you have to jump through which requires you to go to an appointment monthly and get weighed but it has to be completed before they submit to insurance for approval if it’s required.
  13. So I have done a lot of research into making sure which surgery is right for me and my surgery consult is finally June 3rd. I have already turned in the mound of paperwork they wanted from me and the medical release forms, met with the Bariatric Nutritionist for an evaluation, my Bariatric Psychiatric Evaluation is scheduled May 26th, and I already did the seminar required. Plus since I have tried for many, many years to lose weight I have everything cataloged for my weightloss journey in my carb manager app that I used to keep track of meals, weight, carbs, calories, protein, and fat. My question is how long after the consult do they schedule your surgery or do they set it up before you leave the office to give you a goal to work for?

    Lab orders without doctor

Ooh wow you did them very often. Yea I was required every 90 days for my first year by my surgeon and now I will still see the surgeon annually, but if you have a family doctor they ask you to have them order your labs after that first year. Must be nice that they still get paid for a visit every year but don’t have to worry about labs anymore. Really, assuming I maintain my weight, I don’t see that I will need anything from them but they need to record my weight for their statistics yet I have to pay them. If I didn’t have insurance I probably wouldn’t go at this point but I think it still may help me with accountability to some degree.

    Hi everyone

Yes, it is. It’s one of the benefits of the surgery though not every experiences a lack or hunger &/or disinterest in eating/food. I didn’t feel hungry or interested in eating for months. My real hunger didn’t truely start to come back until into my second year. I found I had to eat to a schedule to ensure I ate & got in good nutrition & met my goals. Some days I couldn’t eat everything I was supposed to but other days it was a struggle but it seems to balance out. It did help change how I looked at food & eating though - eat to live not live to eat - which was a big win. PS - Congrats on your weight loss so far.
  16. I don’t think I will ever lose enough weight to make my cushion go away there. they do make butt pads though. They are like shorts with pads sewn in. 😂
  17. I believe these types of opinions should be kept private. However, this remark motivated me to buy a smart scale weight. I had a simple one in my house. However, the one I bought had so many functions like full-body measurements or how much water I should drink during the day. Before that, I was very ignorant about my health, and I ate whatever I found in my pantry. Because of that scale, my body and life changed in the best way possible. Even with everything that happened after one remark, I still think it's impolite to call someone fat or chubby.
  18. It was very hard at first. Especially post op when I couldn’t cook and they got takeout. When I felt up to cooking again, I first cooked only meals that I could eat, too. Our whole family could stand to eat healthier, and if they didn’t like it, they could make something on their own. Turns out my husband has also lost weight and his bloodwork is better, so he credits me. Our children are growing up with healthier food choices, so it’s a win-win! Now, I sometimes cook meals that I can’t eat, and it doesn’t bother me, but only if there are leftovers that I can eat.

    Hi everyone

Hello and welcome in the forum, Congrats on your weight loss so far. Yes its very normal to not feel hungry. The part of your stomach that sends the hungry signals has been cut away. Until it heals and knits together we are in happy land. I am 2 weeks shy of six months out and I still never feel hungry. We are the lucky ones. It must feel awful to be hungry and only eat tiny amounts or have to suffer shakes that go straight out of the stomach.
  20. ShoppGirl

    Hi everyone

Yes it is normal for some to not feel hungry at all and there isn’t really anything you can do about it. As someone who is over a year out and the hunger hormones have returned though, I say enjoy it while it lasts. It will never be easier to lose weight than it is for you right now. Of course you have to be sure to take care of yourself and get in your requirements which isn’t much fun when you aren’t hungry but as the pounds continue to shed that should motivate you to keep up with the plan.

Tendonitis, Rotator Cuffs, and Changed Physiology

I just found this topic and I can relate. I have had frozen shoulder in both left and right in the past 2 years. I am coming up on my 5 year surgery anniversary this month and never connected the problem. My doctor told me this is a fairly common issue if you have type 2 diabetes and hashimoto thyroid. Thankfully both shoulders are better now but it sure was painful and limited my range of motion. I wonder if it is related to losing weight?

Water Retention on Pre Op Liquid Diet

The liver reducing diet is not really designed to make us lose weight anyways. Some people (especially those who were already on another diet) do not lose much at all and The doctors don’t seem concerned with that. The size of the liver is all that they care about in terms of a safe surgery which is the reason for that diet.

    Can't Decide!

This was my reasoning for choosing the sleeve as well, even though I have significant GERD and am aware the sleeve can make this worse. I take several medications that are extended release formulations and my doctor said that the pouch formed with the RNY really couldn't metabolize XR formulations correctly, and these aren't medicines I'm likely to stop taking with weight loss. So it was simple in that regard. Sometimes making a pros and cons list helps @Veritas34! It sounds simple but that also helped me see that the slightly higher weight loss percentage wasn't enough of a reason for me to go ahead with the RNY. But everyone's reasons will be different. Listing may help you come up with some questions for your surgeon! Best of luck!
  24. I was revised January 2021, and 1 year out I had lost 105 lbs. Revision weight was 295, high weight (pre-sleeve) 365. I am currently 195. I just finished treatment for uterine/ovarian cancer and oncologist told me to not actively try to lose weight, but I have lost over 30 pounds since the diagnosis.

Water Retention on Pre Op Liquid Diet

You’ll probably pee out your PMT water retention in a couple of days so it won’t have any real impact on your weight when you have your surgery. Plus, your medical team understand how our bodies work. All the best with your surgery.
