:How do you get your high protein?

I do a lot of Beans, eggs, greek yogurt ( I use FAGE plain 0% ), nuts, cheese, dark green leafy vegetables and I supplement with unflavored Protein powder. I'm in a Soup mood so I'm making a orca bean/forbidden rice soup with collard greens shreds. Black rice is protein packed and full of Fiber & nutrients. I'll soak the beans overnight and then cook everything in the crock pot tomorrow. I refuse to sacrifice good healthy fiber for protein so I try to get a balance of both. It keeps me constipation free and gives me energy.

    June 2014 Sleevers Check In!

I had my surgery Wednesday and so far I can do sips of protein shakes had a Popsicle and a little yogurt. Later I'm going to try a little cream soup. My stage 2 foods are cottage cheese, yogurt, sugar free pudding, cream of soups (without the of part of the soup lol), soy milk. And I can still do stage 1 clear liquids water, decaf tea or coffee, sugar free jello, broths etc. I'm on these stage for he next 2-4 weeks depending on how thugs go and what my dr feels. I can't move on till he says it's ok. I'm also glad I did this and so far still don't really feel hungry at all.
  3. I experienced the same. My dr says that that's my body telling me I'm not ready for that food. Just eat that food another week or so and try again. Yup and I got the same response. Not ready for that. Try again... right now Greek strawberry cheese cake yogurt is my bestie.
  4. Hi Guys, I am about 7 weeks out from gastric bypass surgery and I have some questions regarding how much I should be able to eat. I have been cleared to eat normal food since week 4 and since then I have been sticking to three meals a day of high protein homemade meals like chili, tilapia baked in salsa, an egg baked in lentil stew, or chicken cooked in crushed tomatoes. I had my surgery in Mexico so my aftercare from my surgeon has been essentially nonexistent even when I called early on with some issues I was having. Additionally, my health insurance here will not cover any weight loss attempts whether it's surgical or non-surgical so I can't afford to see a bariatric surgeon or nutritionist so I am relying on you guy's experience to guide me in terms of what a normal volume of food is at 7 weeks post-op I weight out all of my food and food prep so I know exactly what and how much I am eating at any one time. I am worried that at 7 weeks post-op I can eat anywhere from 4 oz to 6 oz of dense protein mixed with a sauce at a time. This is almost always at dinner time. So my usual breakfast is one container of Siggi's yogurt which is 5.3 ounces. That usually takes me an hour to finish. I feel no restriction when I eat the yoghurt but I feel no need to eat until lunch after having it. My lunches are usually chilli or chicken in some sort of tomato sauce. There I can consume between 2 oz to 5 oz of food. How much I can handle before I feel full varies day to day. Now the biggest issue comes at dinner. I can and have in the last week eaten up to 6 ounces of dense protein and sauce in one sitting within 30 mins. Now usually there will be 4 oz of dense protein 1 ounce of beans or other vegetables and then the remaining ounces will be sauce. Now I make sure to not drink water 30 mins before, during, or after my meals so I know the issue isn't that. And I am eating dense protein like ground beef, fish, or chicken so I should feel more restriction. I read posts from other people and they talk about how they can barely handle 1 ounce of meat at 7 weeks out. But it seems I have an iron stomach. I haven't eaten a thing so far that bothers my stomach or gives me any pain. So I am wondering if the issue is the fact that I am eating my protein with sauce? I have tried dry chicken and even with that I could eat 3 oz at only 4 weeks out with few problems. This seems like way too much food. I know stews like chili are considered sliders but the fact that I can consume 3 oz of dry chicken seems like way too much. Maybe I should limit the amount of sauce I use with my food. Mind you I make my sauces from scratch using canned tomatoes or so I am not using high carb premade sauces. What thoughts do you guys have? What has your experience been? Is my capacity way out of line? Am I pushing things too far? I am really starting to worry that my surgeon may have made my pouch super big and that will hinder my weight loss. To date I have lost 27 pounds since surgery and 42 since my 2 week pre-op diet. Sorry if this super long post it's been weighing on my mind.

    Does Anyone Else Hate Eating?

I am 9 months post op also. I don't exactly hate eating but I don't love it or enjoy it anymore either. There are days when I get a sad because someone is eating something that I used to love like cheesecake or a burger from Red Robin but then I remind myself that those foods put my health and life at risk. Lots of the foods I used to eat, I avoid now because I can't tolerate them but most of those foods were unhealthy to begin with. Everytime I get a little depress about not being able to eat, I look at my before and after picture on my iPhone. I now go for foods that I know will be easily tolerated like salads, oatmeal, yogurt, tuna salad, fish, soft cooked veggies. The one thing a really miss is a big glass of ice cold milk. But I am a size 0 now with no high blood pressure, no pre diabetic signs, normal heart function, no back pain, no ankle pain, no knee pain, no snoring, etc... I can live with getting a little sad 3-30 mins meal times a day in exchange for a healthier me.

    Eatting Woes

How about sf pudding, sf jello, yogurt? Those are really easy on the tummy. Or go back to the very basics like broths and increase the consistency slowly. Hope you get your tummy working better soon.

    Milk calories and protein.....

Type "week 3 stall" into the search box in the top right-hand corner. You will have a better idea of why you're not losing right now........ As for milk, there are many different opinions. For myself, I prefer not to have the carbs from milk in my diet as a beverage. I drink coconut milk and almond milk (both unsweeneted). There's not much taste to them, but it does a good job of substituting for milk, and they are both low calorie and low carb. Protein powders mixed well for me with both coconut and almond milk when I was using powders (I drink ready to drink (RTD) shakes now, or eat protein bars). I still eat many dairy products (yum.....cheese and yogurt), so it's not milk that I'm avoiding, as much as the carbs in regular milk (whether it's skim, 1%, 2% or whole).

    Solid Foods!

My Nut also!! For over a year Before WLS I would make a Protein drink with Yogurt & Uncooked Oatmeal I Loved it! but at this time Yogurt is not my Friend Lol
  12. Beef is my no go now. And so are dairy products like cottage cheese and yogurt (heavy dairy?) I can only have 1 cup of milk a day if im lucky. Oh, eggs are a no go too. Sucks that all of them are so high in protien lol
  13. It will be an adjustment pre and post-op, that is for sure. But with time, you will adapt. It might seem impossible now, but you will find a new "normal" post-op and you WILL be able to do it. Putting Protein first has been much easier for me than I thought it would be. I thought I would miss all the carbs, but I rarely do. It's crazy to me to think that pizza used to be my favorite food and now I wouldn't bother with it. If/when I eat pizza, I have to just eat the toppings and skip the crust. It just doesn't satisfy me the way it used to. There's nothing fulfilling about eating the cheese and toppings off of about two slices of pizza then feeling full and gross. I do occasionally still sometimes have some chips or a muffin or something, but it's sooooo rare and it never satisfies me they way I'd want it to anyway. So it's pretty easy for me to stick to my protein-first diet. It will be hard to get your protein in in the early days, just because getting ANY food in will be challenging. But once you are back on solid foods and fully recovered, it's not too hard to reach your protein goals. Here's a sample day for me so you can get an idea of how I get my 100 grams of protein in (some surgeons/nutritionists only want 60 or 65, but my nutritionist wanted me up to 100 as soon as I was able): Breakfast: Protein Bar (21g) Morning Snack: String Cheese (8g) Lunch: Leftover meat from previous dinner (12-20g) Afternoon Snack: Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt w/ 1/2 oz. of kashi Cereal or granola (15g) Dinner: The meat from whatever meal my husband cooks for himself (12-20g) Evening Snack: Protein Bar (21g) Obviously I'm eating a lot more 9 months out than you will be able to handle for the first couple of months, but you can see that by eating protein-heavy meals and snack, six times a day, I get in about 90-100 grams of protein a day.

Why aren't you eating solid foods for breakfast? Or at least mushies like Greek yogurt or oatmeal. Protein shakes are a slider, I would be hungry 5 min. Later and I'm at restriction. Also for me salad is a slider food. Are you eating 3 oz. Solid protein Lunch and dinner?

    July Sleever's

Clears will be gone before you know it. Then it's onward to yogurt, drinkable yogurt, delicious Protein drinks, Soups. Egg drop soup was my favorite.
  16. Aw, I love my tomato soup. This makes me so sad. I love eating it with unflavored protein powder and topped with a little cheese and greek yogurt.
  17. Whats your food look like each day?that is a good question.I usually wake up at 6 AM, I take a protein shake or a bar (Quest). Then I go to the gym from 6h45 to 8h15. 15 minutes elliptical to warm up, a 30 minutes weight lifting with 80% of max weight and high rep until failure of the muscle group. I usually do 3 x 10-12 reps of different exercises, then 30 seconds rest and another set of 3. 30 minutes running to finish. Once I get to work I have another bar / shake. At lunch I usually take a salad (2 boiled eggs, some chickpeas or beans, couple of cherry tomatoes, green. No dressing) and a fat free yogurt for later. no snack in the afternoon. If I am hungry, I go for another yogurt. in the evening I usually go for scrambled eggs (2), or sea food (shrimps, squids, smoked salmon) and a smoothie (Watermelon, light cranberry juice is my favorite). no late snacks. During weekend I usually take lest protein shakes / bars and eat poultry, fish, etc. I don't have any cravings or things I want to eat. I select food I know will work for my sleeve, but I don't miss anything...yet. it may change later. I don't know. I don't enjoy eating as I used to (which is a good thing because that is the reason why I am obese), even if I still cook for my family during the weekends. This is a good thing as I want to move on with my life and have other objectives. Hope it helps. Awesome post. I love it when members detail what they eat and their activity level- it's very helpful and I always get some good ideas. Can you share how you make the watermelon smoothie? I'm convinced I'm part fruit monkey- can't get enough. Btw way to go!!! You are on fire!!! Love your attitude. Thank you for your nice comments. I do what I can, and it is not working too bad for now. For the smoothie, I take some watermelon I put in the blender, some ice (a few cubes) I add light cranberry juice and voila! I also do it wiith unsweetened peach ice tea. I like the combined flavors. Sometime I add a full peach in it. I try to avoid high sugar content fruits such as cherries or grapes. Mango juice was not a good idea as the flavor overtakes the watermelon completely. I tried to mix pineapple and light coconut milk. That makes an awesome alcohol free cocktail. Something else I do in the morning: I put an espresso shot in my chocolate shake with skimmed milk. Awesome cappuccino ! 18. Another day at work, more intense and no issues. Today some colleagues had lunch delivered to the office . Usually I would have been craving of hunger at lunch with nice smell of well cooked Spanish dishes....but now I noticed that if my head remembered very well, my stomach remained completely indifferent . This is magical. I scheduled a shake at 1 pm that I took at 5 pm. I can drink plenty of water now (as long as there is flavor). And I lost my daily pound. I can't ask for more. I am 9 days post op and I am thinking about remaining on liquids an extra week. Did anybody do that? I am worried about purées since my episode of liquid yogurt and protein powder was not a success.

    My problem

One of the greatest things about losing weight was feeling good enough about myself to go on an online dating site and meeting my wonderful bf. That is when "my problem" started. Every time I had sex, I got a UTI. I went to a urologist and he has me taking an antibiotic a few hours before sex. Now, the next day I immediately get a yeast infection. I can't win. I went online to find some sort of home remedy because it's really getting expensive buying all this medication. One of the web sites said to shove a clove of garlic up there and it will get rid of yeast infections. I am afraid to try it. I had read to put unsweetened yogurt up there, but that is not very easy to get it in there where it needs to go. Okay, end of rant.

    Food Logs Discussion

The method that music describes is probably the one most often used. But there is another alternative that may help in some cases. I'll use green Beans as an example. Open MFP, go to your diary and then enter "green beans" in the search field. The first option that comes us is "Beans - Green (8oz.)(226g)". Tap on that entry. The first field on that screen is "Serving Size" and is showing 226g. But if you look immediately to the right of 226g you will see an arrow. Tap the arrow or really anywhere in the "Serving Size" field and it will open to show you serving size options. In this case, you have two options - 226g which is the default (as noted by the check mark in that field) or 1g. Those are your options. But the options you have will depend on the food you search for. For example, if you search for "Yogurt", choose the first entry, and then tap anywhere in the "Serving Size" field, you will see options for 6oz or 1oz. Many of us are more comfortable with those measurements as opposed to metric. If you play around with searches for different foods, you'll find that still other options are available for different foods. One I'm looking at right now has options for "0.5 cups", "1 cup", or "1 container (1.8 cups ea.)". Finally, if you do a search for a food and there are any number of options for essentially the same food (usually the case), different ones may have different serving size options. It's a little tedious to check several options to hopefully find one that has the serving size you want. But in many cases you only have to do it once - especially if it's something you eat frequently. Hope that helps!
  24. Hi! I am one month out from surgery. Surgery date: 10/22/13 Highest weight: 272 Surgery weight: 252 Current weight: 242 1 month out Pre op diseases: Diabetes II, Gout, Hypertension, High Cholesterol and Sleep Apnea Post op meds: Down to 1/2 of all medication amounts and should be medication free in another month, except Gout! I have been struggling to get all my food in. I only seem to be able to get in 1oz of chicken or fish and then I feel like I have to throw up! On two occasions I got 2 oz of protien in but am getting really sick of protien drinks and yogurt. Eggs make me sick as well. Anyone have suggestions. I take all my vitamins and have been getting my protien by protien shots from Sunkist (27g) per shot.
  25. Real protein like chicken, steak, turkey, pork, eggs, cheese, pepperoni, sausage, yogurt etc. I can't stomach yogurt still and I'm starting to get sick of eggs. I dont get enough protein. I probably don't even get half of what I'm supposed to be getting. Today I only got around 42 grams of protein. It's hard to eat healthy too. It sucks when all the healthy food is so expensive, so we get the junk stuff because it is cheaper and lasts a little long. I want to focus on getting protein and greens and fruits starting this month.
