  1. I dislike shopping as well (do I really have to do this after I come home from work?) and I don't like cooking (do I really have to do this after I come home from work?) and cleaning up after (do I really have to do this after I come home from work?). I also dislike preparing food for the next day (do I really have to do this after I come home from work or before work in the next morning?). My compromise is that I keep it as simple as possible. I buy ready made soups that only have a few ingredients listed, even though they're relatively expensive. In general I think of warm food as more satisfying than cold food (e. g. warm oats are more satisfying IMO than cold oats) so I usually don't eat a sandwich/bread on its own but with soup. Soup and sandwich is a go-to for me when time is scarce. I also use frozen vegetables a lot. Saves both shopping, preparing, cleaning up and cooking time. Rice I cook in batches with a microwave rice cooker and freeze it in batches. After I started my new education my working times have changed (including 24 h shifts which are draining as hell) I'm struggling a bit as well, though it's more with regular exercise. I never got into the real groove again after my shoulder injury so far. Ok, I usually bike to work and I have been lucky with the roads not being icy so far but that's about it. Interestingly enough I haven't gained an ounce so far, even though I didn't feel I ate less food (though I must have anyway?). That's kind of a liberating observation. Convenience food (like sandwiches from the cafeteria) or eating lunch at the cafeteria even though they have a salad bar makes for less than ideal choices too often. I don't notice it in terms of weight gain (even lost a bit since starting my education), but I feel tired and drained a lot which I think is only partly because of different working hours. So even though I don't might like it, I will see to preparing oatmeal in the evening to grab in the morning instead of simply buying a sandwich at the cafeteria. There's no way though that I'll be nibbling on a piece of cucumber at 2:30 AM when I want something sweet. Protein bar for me then.

    Approved! Aetna PPO

Hi there, Ahb08, I would call your doctor's office and ask them what they think you should do, i would think they would not want you to go below 40 bmi though, possibly stay the same weight aka lose 8 lbs.; but not go below 40bmi before approval?? Ask them " Do you usually get approval from aetna ppo with this regime, Has anyone ever been denied? What about the weight gain, has anyone ever been denied for gaining or being at 40 bmi exactly? Waynes6, I just cut out almost all sweets, and most of the high cal foods, like potato chips, butter, corn chips, bagels, ect. I logged what i ate on "My Plate" and i would make sure i was exercising... walking an hour a night at the gym on the treadmill and doing crunches.... I lost 7 pounds. I actually gained back 3 and had to lose it again!! I got sick for 2 weeks with that flu i think and i actually gained??! I have read on here that you do not want to lose more than 10 pounds during the 3 months.... My nutritionist just had me bring in a few days printout of my online food diary ~~ "My Plate" and i brought in my workout routine printed out too. You should be working with a facility that puts the whole package together for you, all you do is schedule appts. with the physical therapist and psychologist and your primary care physician. To find a actual Bariatric Center within a hospital that does this {puts together the pre-req's for insurance} is A Must!! They should be putting it all together because they will know what it takes to get approved, and who to call ect.... I met with a nutritionist, nurse, & surgeon every time i visited. They guided me through the entire process, this is what you want to find first off; If i did not have that now where you are you might want to look at Obesity Help and read reviews on the centers and surgeons near your area. I personally went with what i knew was a top ranked hospital in the first place and then checked out their seminar, and decided that it was where i wanted to go. They had good reviews but they were not too over booked...
  3. I made the decision to have the surgery to stop my binge and volume eating. My plan is to use this tool to end the behavior. I know that in the beginning the fast weight loss will keep me motivated. I've already lost and regained hundreds of pounds in the past and I don't ever want to have to lose the SAME pounds again. This is a last resort for me. In the past I went from 272 to 127 with diet and exercise. I broke my foot teaching a Zumba class and that was the beginning of my weight gain (again). As I watched the scale go up 3, down 2, up 5, down 3, I slowly gained 70 pounds back over the next 7 years. I saw 200 quickly approaching and decided diet and exercise just wasn't going to do it for me again. At 60 years old, the weight doesn't fall off anymore. I didn't want to be 272 ever again. So.... before my fear became my reality I made the decision to have the surgery. I'm scheduled for Aug. 1st, and it can't come fast enough.
  4. I didn't weigh myself after my sleeve surgery because I was stuck in the hospital for days, but after all three of my plastics procedures during which time they used about the same amount of fluids, if not less, I gained a solid 10 pounds immediately after surgery and it took about 3-4 days to get back to my normal weight. Weight gain after surgery is normal and you shouldn't retain the extra Fluid for longer than a few days.

    Weight gain

I'm sorry you are struggling, Many people here have had weight gain. It's not too late. A good start is finding a good therapist to address your binge eating issues. Medication issues are between you and the prescribing physician. If you don't have a dietician research for one in your area.
  6. I know this my LipstickLady friend, and yet...... I chose the cute little nuggets. But No more. I solemnly vow to never again go through a drive thru - even drove to Kansas from Florida and back, no weight gain. Gained 4 lbs. on a 7 day cruise, and lost it immediately. I am blessed to be old and retired. I got off track when my NUT said I was eating too much Protein, and I got gout in both big toe joints. I am going back to 1/2 filet mignon, fish, tuna, and more protein and a little exercise as I can, and I should see a difference. Cowgirl Jane posted some good pointers last night that opened my eyes. Sometimes we think we are on point and then duh! Not! Thanks for the help, LipstickLady, we all need it. As you can see Wynnie, we are all helped here. Best of luck. Linda
  7. (((HUG)))) I know that after surgery that's the last thing we want to see on the scale. Believe it or not, I'm up about six pounds from my pre-admission weight. I'm certain none of it is a real weight gain, because I feel like a bloated balloon at the moment. Either way, your body is just recovering, and there's no way you have gained actual pounds of fat right now. it's probably just reorganizing and holding in Water to help you heal. I'm sure it will come back off in no time =)
  8. Hi was banded like 4 yrs ago. Lost weight , gained back due to injury, broken back and more. Usually smoothies and soup are all I keep down. Throw up a lot, and I know there's hardly any liquid in the balloon. I guess check back with Dr? My prior Dr passed away. Any ideas for healthy breakfast smoothie even if it has green stuff in it😀

    No weight loss?

I have heard others say surgery can cause water retention weight gain. So give it a week or so and see how it all works its way out of your body. I didn't own a scale immediately after surgery so I don't know what my weight was doing then.
  10. I just had my lap-band surgery on Tuesday, Feb 8th and I feel great, but I have gained 7-8 lbs of Fluid in my stomach. I don't feel bloated or uncomfortable, just my stomach is pretty distended. Anyone else have that occur and hav any suggestions on how to rectify? Thank you, Lori
  11. I am 7 weeks out and I think every phase so far has had a difficult part. After surgery is hard with the weight gain from the IV's in the hospital and the liquid stage, not to mention the reflux. Not drinking while eating has been difficult for me. Now that I have more tolerance for food sticking with 70% Protein and 30% vegetable has been more difficult. At this point I sometimes mourn food. You go to your favorite restaurant, you order and you can literally only eat 3 bites of it. Sometimes I find I just want to eat my food. Also, eating too fast. Hard to make 3 bites last a half hour! Overall it has been worth it though.

A Crazy Past Two Years- Grazing issue begun

Weight regain after two years is not uncommon since we can eat more than we did right after surgery. There are a few factors that can lead to weight gain, two most prevalent are nutrition and medications. You state that you are on anti anxiety medication. Check to see if this medication can cause weight gain. As for nutrition, you stated that cooking is a burden especially the foods that you should be eating. When we take short cuts on the quality of food we need to eat this tends to lead us to processed foods. Processed foods have a in the past caused many here ( me included) to gain weight and suffer poor health. Try looking at your foods and eliminate the processed foods that you are eating. Get back to the quality foods that give you nutrition. The main thing is, you realize that you have a problem. Don't despair, work on a sensible plan of action and you will see positive results that you can build on. Good luck and good health.
  13. Hello. My name is Tessa and I am a newbie to BariatricPal. My sleeve was 6/12/15. So I am currently 4 weeks post op. Things were going great until I introduced soft foods this week. I'm up 5 pounds since my weigh in Thursday. I don't understand. I'm eating SMALLER. Why am I gaining? I understand that eating and drinking to together will do that. I wait 20 minutes after drinking and wait 30 after eating to drink again. Could it be the sodium? Not all of my food is low in sodium. I have been so hungry that I haven't cared to check. Could it be sugar? I drink 98% water but will have organic lemonade every once in a while. Please help. I am having major regrets about this surgery. I didn't have it to still gain weight. It is so depressing. Thanks, Tessa

    Are Refined Carbs The Culprit?

I really believe it is a multi-layered issue - I know that I am much better to able to control my own, as well as my family's weight gain and moods by eliminating processed carbs and sugar from the house. I read a great book last year about these issues called The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite - by David Kessler, former head of the FDA. http://www.amazon.com/The-End-Overeating-Insatiable-American/dp/1605297852 He himself wanted to lose a few lbs and found it quite challenging, as a scientist he started to do research as to why humans have been roughly the same body composition since the beginning of time (with considerations for improved hygiene, advances in medicine etc.) and why in the 1980's obesity numbers began to skyrocket. He talks about how the combination of sugar and fat is one that does not exist in nature - two substances that we are genetically hardwired to want to consume in quantity when available - our biology has not had time to catch up with our industry in nutshell. Lab rats consume 'rat chow' as their main form of nutrition, when scientists started to feed them layered combinations of fat, sugar, salt (as restaurants such as Cheesecake Factory, Red Robin, and the like do.) these rats no longer would eat their nutritious yet bland rat chow - their dopamine centers lit up like a Christmas tree, setting up a cycle of addiction - so much so that these rats would cross electrified floors that would almost kill them to get to the bad stuff. These substances do the same things to us. It is a good read. One thing that the nutritionist at my surgeon's office said is that there are no essential carbohydrates - our bodies will make what we need from Protein and fats. I have noticed that when I drop the carbs down to 20g or less a day - which is akin to Atkin's induction levels and my pre-surgical recommendation - I am always satisfied with very little and do not have hunger cravings like I do when I consumed carbs, sugar, caffeine, and diet soda.

    Female question....

Just an FYI for anyone on DEPO, that can cause weight gain as well. I was on it for several years and gained a LOT of weight in that time. It also can take a while after you go off it to get pregnant (if that's something you'd be interested in). It took me almost a year to get pregnant after my last shot and I never went back to it. I have problems with any of the birth control with hormones in. I went to an IUD and haven't had any problems. I am still a little concerned about the weirdness in my periods, but I'm going to wait until next month to bring it up to my doctor. Maybe it'll be back on schedule by then.

What to do when you can't sleep?

They probably thought you had a helluva night!!! Do you take any other medications that might be causing this as a side effect? They link weight gain and inability to lose weight to lack of sleep, isn't it amazing how many of us have those problems? Mine is nowhere as severe as you speak of---mine is more of a natural time clock being at odds with my schedule!! If I could stay up til 1AM and sleep til 9AM I would not have a problem. Instead I stay up til 1--go to bed, freak out that I have to be up in 4 hours, and then cannot fall asleep--finally falling asleep only to have to be up 2-3 hours later.....repeat....repeat....repeat!!! The few times I have used anything to sleep I used benedryl....not a great long term plan though, I was a space cadet all day following it. Hope you resolve it soon! Kat

    Gained weight/no restriction

Hi all:sad::biggrin: It has been a while since I posted or came on this forum. I had many changes in my life sinceI the last time I was here. I got re-married, both my parents past away months of each other; I have had lots of stress. On March 3 2009 I had a fill and un-fill within 2 days leaving 8.5cc in my 10cc. Band. For the past 5 months I‘ve been plague with very bad acid reflux (throwing-up in my sleep even 3 to 4 hours after eating) and no restriction. As a result my diet consists of soup, and any mushy food. Today I went for a fill, instead I had barium and esophagus x-ray to find out I am to restricted which cause the acid reflux, and the diet of mushy food caused the weight gain (21lbs) and I had to have my band un-fill. They took out 5cc leaving only 3cc. I feel horrible, like I have to start all over. How will I prevent myself from gaining more weight? 3cc. Is nothing! Help me please, I need help:sad::thumbup::scared2::tongue: Thank you
  19. Yes, even though of course I know that weight gain during pregnancy is "normal" and even healthy and desireable, it is very hard for me to watch the numbers, which I fought so hard to make go down, go up. I know what everyone will say, that now is not the time to diet (and I'm not) and that I should not be starving my baby (I'm not), but I just want to validate you, OP, it is very difficult for me to "enjoy" or even deal with this weight gain! Good luck!
  20. Before my sleeve, I would work hard to lose over weeks and months to lose 10 pounds, and I would gain it back in one weekend. Right now I am in a stall, and I have been for weeks. I am not losing weight, but my body is changing. Muscles are emerging. Still, the lack of movement on the scale is discouraging. And I realize that in the past, I would get to this point and console myself with food, which led to the weight gain. Now, I can't console myself with food. I'm not losing pounds, but I'm not gaining them back either. My body is changing, and I just need to make sure I let it.

    Work out weight gain?

yes, this is normal. your body is probably in shock. give it a week and i'm sure you'll start seeing loss again. also adjust your diet a little bit. when we become predictable in our diet and exercise the body gets "bored" and sometimes needs to be caught off guard. also muscle weighs more than fat so...that could also be the cause of the weight gain. but to be honest, your weight can fluctuate 2-3 lbs daily depending on certain factors. i wouldn't be too concerned. good luck and keep up the good work! your efforts will certainly pay off in a big way!
  22. I guess I didn't make myself clear enough the first time around. My dietician's (over the last three years) did not want me eating less than 1500 cals, as it was hard to keep my blood sugar on an even keel. I have a tendancy to be hypoglycemic, and get shaking and sweaty when my sugar is dropping. This has been happening on the 1500 max diet, which is what I tried to tell him today. I always eat my Protein first as to give it the max amount of time to work before the carbs are added, but it doesn't seem to help on this program. I was having much better luck controlling my diabetes when I was eating a min of 1500, with at least three meals and trying to get at least two Snacks in too. I don't think the 1500 max would be a problem for another patient, but that shipped sailed long ago. My metabolism was wrecked years ago, and have been trying to get it burning again for two years. Like I said, I was thrilled to see the scale going back down instead of up! Sometimes I think doctors forget each of us has our own unique body, and history that can't be made equal to another person. I am the ONLY large person in a large family of thin people (I'm the tallest female though) - mainly because my metabolism is burnt out. I started looking at Lapband as a way to keep small meals in my body consistently in order to get it burning correctly again. I don't want to ruin the progress I worked so hard to achieve. Quoting one of the thousands of studies on weight loss does not mean it will work for me - especially if its the program he uses for himself. Men and women are not the same creatures. I'm not looking for excuses, but solutions. I don't think this physician is looking to help a patient recovering from what is essentially anorexia (one meal a day) overcome their struggle, but to neatly fit me into their profile. He clearly stated that he doesn't have the time to read my reports from my endo, obgyn, dermatologis or neurologist, and thinks that my PCOS, migraines and diabetes were caused from my weight - not as a result of it. My endo and I have clearly marked the illness I had that resulted in 30 lbs lost in 30 days in my late teens, and weight gain/complications that resulted every year since. It clearly shows the progression of my diabetes, along with the increased symptoms of PCOS. This history will not be solved with a diet that isn't tailored to my individual needs - like the ones my dieticians have given me.
  23. Big shout out for "wasabubble butt"!!!!! My teenage years of being fat destroyed me, I ended up in many bad relationships, because how could anyone love the fat chick, I was happy to be in a bad relationship because it was all I could get, or so I thought! If I had sorted out my weight in my teens I wouldn't have had to go through that crap..... As I said my son is heavy, 14 and 220llb 5'9,k his Dad is 6'4 and I'm hoping he now just grows upwards. I will and would do anything in my power to save him any unhapiness. At the moment he is doing great with his food and exercise he's down 20llbs but I try not to dewl to much on his weight because I want him to know that he is so much more than that and I want him to get on with his life. I truly hope he manages to gain controle of his weight, and food. Unlike me who has struggled with it all my life. If he get's to 16/17 and it is still a problem I will look at banding for him. The funny thing is my daughter who is 11 and has always been slim has started to put weight on, quite a bit. Now I have never once mentioned this to her, I have never reffered to her weight gain, in the opposite I have told her how beautiful and curvy she is and do you know what, she thinks she is "Canadians next top model". I have noticed she herself is begining to take controle of portion sizes and exercise! But as for self essteam she has it in bucketfuls, It makes me wonder how much of my sons weight issues I have caused indirectly. As soon as he started to put weight around 7yrs old I freaked and tried to take controle of it, whilst not even being able to take controle of my own! Jx

    Exercising...but Gaining??

I was banded on Feb 2nd. I lost about 20 lbs since then. As of the second day I have been walking 1 1/3 miles a day plus doing what I can on the Wii fit. Weighed myself today and I have gained almost 3 lbs! I have not cheated once, I have been on about 1100 calories aday average the last week. I am pretty upset right now and I do not understand the weight gain. It is bad enough that I feel no restriction and am doing this all on willpower because I want to be healthy but a 3 lb gain is ridiculous

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

I had the bypass and am now 6 years post op w complications. My new dr is going in and removing the hormone producing part of the stomach along when redoing the cut on my stomach. He explains back when I had it done they cut the stomach different which proved in many patients around the 3 year mark for their stomach to start stretching and taking a new sharp which resulted in weight gain. Since then they perform of differently.
