    One year bariatric birthday!

    Congratulations on your bariatric birthday.

    insurance

If bariatric surgery is excluded from your coverage, you will not get insurance to pay for any reason. If your policy is through an employer, you can request that they change policies to one that includes it, or get a group of people at work that are interested in the surgery and provide statistics and data to management / HR about how some very expensive health issues are corrected with WLS. Wouldn't they rather pay $20K for WLS than $200K for heart bypass and rehab?
  3. Hey guys! As of today, I'm 2 weeks and 1 day away from changing my lifestyle and looking towards long term health and a better quality of life. Surgery is on 2/2 with Dr. Alvarez in Piedras Negras, Mexico. So glad. I joined a gym and actually worked out today! It felt great! I've been eating healthy and tapering off the junk food. It's amazing how much better I feel eating clean foods, working out and having the surgery in the line of sight. This time next week, I'll be on the pre-op diet...for 8 days... wish me luck! Sharing an excellent resource... if you don't already have it, it's a great read and the excellent advice the author provides is based on her experience counseling bariatric patients: The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery by Cynthia Alexander. Everyday I learn a new strategy for help along our journey. If you purchase it, let me know what you think!

    Liquid Diet

I was required to do two weeks of shakes and then clear liquids my last day. For my shakes I did Bariatric Advantage as recommended by the surgeon's office. That was a rough two weeks. The last day I just went to GNC and loaded up on one of everything they had. I think I ended up living on tea, broth, and that gawd awful Isopure with 40g of carbs in the bottle for the last 24 hours.

    Muscle Mass

So has anyone ever gotten a 6 pack after having bariatric surgery? Losing weight and retaining muscle is one thing, but are you able to get definition and put on more muscle after this procedure? Just wondering what the likelihood is considering the dramatic decrease in food intake and the whole sagging skin syndrome. Thanks guys.
  6. Ron, yes you've got it. I'm 49 now and previously lost significant weight with Phen-Fen (gained that all back + more) and then later lost 63 lbs on Atkins (gained that all back + more). The weight loss is all on us - the band makes absolutely sure that all of this effort pays off now and in the future. I don't want that weight back and anyway the second 50 lbs are the hardest to lose. You should schedule your initial consultation ASAP. Many insurance companies use your bariatric intake weight while evaluating the insurance submission. You may also need additional testing, which can help support your insurance submission. I needed to do a sleep study that confirmed sleep apnea (a co-morbidity. My surgeon required a psychological test - which I found helpful - because it helped me better understand the way I feel about food. The whole insurance process can be a hassle. If you just start living like you already have band before you're banded, I just feel that you optimize your physical condition for surgery and you'll probably have better results. My sister is banded and she has had great results as well. If you need to lose 100+ pounds and your weight is making you sick today, then it's time to take action, not keep doing what you're doing and expect different results. Good luck, I already know that I'll be exercising for the rest of my life - otherwise, I'll just be that same old fat guy I was 4 months ago. I'm NEVER going back....

    Cardiology ????

You know what the same thing happened to me just 5 days ago. I did final post ops 2 days before scheduled surgery. everything seemed fine headed home to find message from Bariatric nurse saying they set me up with the cardiologist for next morning, because the preop EKG came back with a possible problem on it. So I freak out just a little. Go in at 10am. They do the EKG on their machine then the doctor calls me in and says the preop EKG, from yesterday, someone had written "heart attack" at the top. He says his machine didn't say that but let's do these other tests so we can clear you for surgery. 4 and half hours later I walk out with a clearance for surgery the next day and I only had to pay a $25 copay, but here it comes....they billed my insurance about $4000 for the days tests! I think it's all a scam. Needless to say, I had my surgery and didn't have any problems. Good luck
  8. So today after speaking to my NUT she told me that what I was eating as my two week pre op diet was all wrong and that I should be having the Bariatric Advantage meal replacement shakes. But my surgery is on May 1st and there is no way I can have it deliver at a reasonable time. Anyways after reading some of the topics I asked her if I can use Body Fortress and she mention that while it's not her first choice she's not completely against it. So now I'm just worried is there any way that they can stop my surgery because I did'nt do as I was told. I have been waiting so long for this surgery and I wouldn't want for it to be cancel. Hopefully someone can share their experience so I know I'm not alone here.

  14. Good afternoon, Usually as long as your bmi doesn't lower, the insurance company wants to see that loss of weight. Losing weight shows that you are trying. As the gentlemen stated above, you still may want to speak to your bariatric team or nurse just to make sure. Sent from my SM-G360P using the BariatricPal App
  15. This is an email that was sent to me from the surgeons office: Melissa, We will not do any of the pre op studies (EKG, CXR or labs) until we have a surgery authorization. We will draw nutritional labs and do a breath test for h pylori at this appt though. I will explain everything when you are here. If Myrna has all of your information we will get our part together and send in after your visit Thursday. It usually takes a couple of days to get dictations, the packet made up and we will send in within a week. Then once we get authorization you will get a surgery date then return to do your pre op testing within a 30 day period prior to surgery. See you Thursday Jill East, RN IU Surgical Weight Management @ Wishard Bariatric Clinical Coordinator

Welcome Garciagiss! I can only speak from my experience. I contacted the Bariatric Clinic I chose and asked them what was required of me to get an appointment. First was a letter of referral from my PCP, second they wanted medical records from the past 3 years. I was then scheduled to attend an educational seminar and a visit with the nutritionist. After I completed all of those steps I was given an appointment with the surgeon for consultation. The last appointment before my surgery was a class given by the bariatric nurse. The whole process took about 6 months after making first contact with the clinic. This will vary greatly between the different bariatric groups, insurance requirements and hospitals. I wish you well on your journey, it's well worth all of the effort!

    Vitamins?

Most surgeon's won't allow you to take regular pills for the first month post op. Chewable Vitamins are the norm. Many will get the multi-vitamins with Iron, take Calcium chews, and B-12 injections/patches. I prefer an "all-in-one" approach. I'm currently taking OptiSource Chewable. They are a complete multi Vitamin including all the calcium, iron, b-12, and folate you need post op. Several pharmacies carry them, but don't advertise them. Also, you can get them through Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Optisource-Chewable-Vitamin-Mineral-Supplement/dp/B00CJB9K4K/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1452300980&sr=1-1&keywords=optisource+post+bariatric+vitamins

    Discouraged!

could you have lots of diabetes in the family? I agree with the others. Make sure you write down the names of who you speak to. Also could you get this in writing? YOu might want to talk to your boss and they might be ready to renew the contract and make changes..

    Vitmans

I had to research vitamins myself, too! I watched a lot of YouTube videos about bariatric surgery and nutrition. Very informative stuff out there! I decided to go with Barimelts vitamins since I’m horrible at taking pills. I like the Barimelts since I can just chew them up. And they taste pretty good, too! I’ve had excellent bloodwork since my surgery so I know they help. I adjust what I need based on what my bloodwork results are. I also decided to add the chewable probiotic since I figured it couldn’t hurt.

    Vitmans

Agreed, your team should be telling you which vitamins you will need to take. Then, adjusting based on your blood work results. I get my multivitamin from Amazon and my Calcium from Walmart. (That is all I take) But there are tons of places, just google "bariatric vitamins". I can't say I have ever seen them at my pharmacy though but never looked VERY hard or asked.

    Diabetes

Only a hug, a pat on the back, a reminder that Bariatric surgery can stop or at least slow down the Diabetes Monster. Every blood lab I have drawn I worry mine will come back like yours. My PCP shakes his head " By all that is holy, you should be diabetic by now!" darn dude sounds disappointed, does he really want all the extra work it would ensue? Peeved him my BP is better, cholesterol lower, pulse Ox higher and better than his, I have COPD, don't smoke and I'm maybe 35 years older, and then I have the audacity to not turn diabetic, I'm losing weight like a house afire. All his Doom and Gloom was for naught, and looks like I might even outlive him! He is starting to develop a mid-age paunch, should I get in his face and read him the Riot Act.? if he doesn't know,it by now, KARMA IS A FEMALE DOG! (snicker-snicker!)

    Vitamins

I use a one a day chewable for bariatric patients. It's Procare Health. It's chewable and not awful, but you can also swallow it and receive all the benefits. In addition I take b2 and calcium (1200-1500 a day, spread out). I hated all the chewable calcium I tried, I finally went with a "petite" kind from Wal Greens.
  24. Does any live in Mass. and have Medicare. I was wondering what the requirements were. I called the insurance company and they didn't seem to know anything. I think I have a 6 month medically supervised diet program to complete. Has anyone done that and what is it that you had to do for that. Has anyone been really close to the 40 BMI with no comorbidities since all mine are just borderline. My BMI is now a 41.5 but worried if I loose to much then I won't qualify for the surgery. If I qualify then I will be going to Burlington Mass. but doing my pre surgery appointments in the Danvers/Beverly hospital. Of anyone out there has used them for bariatric surgery or is going to use them I would love to hear from you. My niece went through them and did fine.
