What's your best protein shake recipe?
shedo82773 replied to rolosmom7's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
If you are wanting to up your Protein I recommend GENEPRO it is nonflavored and is 30Grams of protein. I add it to my coffee when I do Expresso. You can add it to anything. I buy it online. I use AMAZON PRIME so I don't have to pay S/H. The trick I have found is to take a little warm Water add your scoop and whisk it before you add it. I even take my chocolate Almond Milk and add a scoop of it, the same way tempering it before adding it to my cold chocolate Almond milk. Just a little tid bit of info. I don't know which surgery you had but I have been told by my Surgeon that anything over 30grams of protein is a waste because our bodies can only handle 30grams at a time so all over that is just lost. I love ATKINS Protein drinks they have 15grams, MYOPLEX is another good one. If you want recipes you can check out some of the online sites like: Pintrest, The world according to eggface has many different recipes too. Good Luck -
Unflavored protien powder

genepro is my favorite! -

This is another example of how varied everyone's taste is :-) I use unflavored protein all the time, in my coffee, in refried Beans, in any soup that I have, into oatmeal, etc. The brand I use is undetectable once it's mixed in and packs a big protein punch. I can't drink a RTD protein drink anymore, they're so grossly thick and artificially sweet, so using unflavored has been a huge help. What brand do you use?? Mine can't be cooked with and I too get sick of flavours and the texture pretty quickly. I would love to sneak it in soup or something. I can and I will. I'm using GENEPRO, and it's by far my favorite. I gave all my flavored powders away, because I can put the unflavored powder into anything plus I can use Stevia if I want something sweet instead of having sucralose which is in so many flavored powders. *Edited to add: I don't cook with it per se, but I stir it into cooked foods. If your oatmeal or whatever is very warm, add the powder to a little milk or Water, stir with a fork, then stir that into the food.

Unflavored protein
justhere4theshow replied to csalt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I will try the GENEPRO soon; it seems to be a favorite. I love unjury, but if genepro is better that is awesome! -
Genepro. Works great. But doesn't mix in cold like it says. I use it in yogurt, yams, tea and oatmeal.

Pre-Op Whey Protein Isolate / shakes?
BeagleLover replied to nprcowboy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
100% Protein isolate is best because it is the one most absorbable. unjury and Syntrax nectar are very good and don't taste like medicine to me. I thought Trader Joe's vanilla would be good because I like their other foods. Wrong! Can't stand it. Another good one, recommended by Johns Hopkins is GENEPRO. I've heard it tastes very good, but haven't tried it yet. -
Hot chocolate protein shake
ShelterDog64 replied to macon_me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@macon_me You could use sugar-free hot chocolate mix and add unflavored Protein powder to it. I mix GENEPRO into my coffee every morning -
I haven't tried them, but they don't look terrible. Their protein is whey isolate, which is what we want (as opposed to the great unknown that's in that Genepro scam), though the low carb crowd will certainly find that they have "too many carbs", but if that doesn't bother you, go for it. They do seem to have a fair amount of sugar alcohols (erythritol, sorbitol) which bother some people with GI distress, but not others. Like protein bars and such, I wouldn't have more than one of these per day, both from the perspective of diversification (don't get all of your protein or other nutrition from just one place) and with all the sugar alcohols in it you may find yourself stuck on the toilet all day until you find out how sensitive you are to them.

I am also finding my balance on carbs as well. Almost 7 months post op here. At 2-3 months I never ever had room for more than a touch of fruit or a little qinoa. But I've found that eating a bit more carbs seems to boost my weight loss. My carbs come from: a slice of 100% whole wheat bread, wasa crisps, pea crisps, Greek yogurt, sweet potato, fruits and vegetables. So it's never higher carb and lower Protein at a given meal. It's more that I have room to add in more of these healthy carbs without reducing my protein. Oatmeal is a tricky one. I'd also say only whole oats or steel cut. No instant oats. And if you can add protein to it-cook in milk or add GENEPRO, better. But oatmeal is very filling and will impact your ability to get in any additional protein at that meal. (I think it's more appropriate in the first 6 weeks as you are adjusting to food then it is during the bulk of the weight loss stage.) All of that said, track. If you are tracking, and your weight loss doesn't slow down with oatmeal twice a week, great. But don't go to daily oatmeal right away. And if it makes you start craving other carbs, think about it it's really a good choice.

Can we talk carbs?
ShelterDog64 replied to magoosmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ate steel-cut oats with Fairlife milk, stevia and Genepro powder early on, probably until about 6 weeks post-op, then I cut out grains/cereals entirely. I know what those kind of carbs do to me and I don't think they're a great idea while I'm in weight-loss mode. Lots of great advice from some very successful vets here, thanks for bringing up the topic. I struggle with whether or not to have many carbs in any form, always eat my protein first but my body really wants vegetables and fruit right now. My garden is producing squash like crazy (my husband's co-workers are starting to hide from me, I'm the Crazy Squash Lady!) and I'm eating it frequently and I wonder if it's part of the reason I'm in this irritating .5 down/.5 up/.5 down loop right now. My dietitian is zero help with this, she mumbles vague things about 'everyone is different, there are different schools of thought about carbs, if you eat carbs eat fiber too'...I need to find someone to really talk to me about calorie intake, resting metabolic rate, protein:carb ratios, offsetting exercise, ketosis, etc. specifically for WLS patients. It's frustrating! -
4 Days Post Op - Protein, Fluids - Help!
Sunnyway replied to Mebby's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Several companies sell protein soup mixes. Those would count as meals, but not those without protein. Count those as fluid. You don't need to be concerned about "meals" right now. Count your protein grams and your ounces of fluids. Bariatric Advantage and BariWise sell powdered protein soups and probably others. You can also add unflavored protein powder, such as Genepro, to non-protein broths and drinks. -
Any ideas? Getting sick!

Any ideas? Getting sick!
DuodenalSwitchMan replied to genn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ordered the Protein mix from the site, 30 grams in one tablespoon. I put it in my spit pea Soup tonight and I had no idea it was there. GENEPRO medical grade protein. Also, pre surgery up until the last two days I was allowed one meal with 4 oz chicken breast or turkey. And I had a lot of homemade jello! I used Costco's Premiere Protein, premixed and snuck a cup of nonfat Greek yogurt with chocolate Protein powder sprinkled on top of every spoonful, for variation. In Song, MarkieZ -
I'm in soft food right now and don't typically rely on shakes anymore cause I have been getting my protein in just fine with the foods I am eating (and if not I use a scoop of Genepro in a small amount of water (like 2 oz, usually gatorade zero) and drink that for 30 grams of protein). However, when I was in the full liquid stage I would typically finish the shakes within 30 min. No more than an hour for sure. But then, I never had an issue at all from the get go when it came to getting liquids in or keeping things down. I was one of the lucky ones, still am, who didn't have issues with nausea, sickness not being able to eat, drink etc.

FYI, there is no such thing as "medical quality" protein. That's just a marketing gimmick. If you notice, they trademarked the term... so it's not a legit thing, it's just their marketing bs. UNJURY® Medical Quality Protein™ Genepro was sued for a bunch of things, but one thing that came out of the lawsuit was "no industry or FDA standard for "medical grade" protein exists" https://www.leagle.com/decision/infdco20171213e89 Are unjury products good... sure, are they really that much better than other proteins... some, but not all. And don't fall for that marketing BS... if it works for you, awesome. But it's not because of some non-existent "medical grade" protein standard. For the record, All "Whey Isolates" are more tolerable to those with lactose issues. Some more than others... https://healthyeating.sfgate.com/can-lactose-intolerant-people-drink-whey-protein-shakes-11706.html

Finally... Hunger Hits at Week 7 Post Op!
Ssze1109 replied to mylighthouse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Raw almonds, cheese, cottage cheese with unsweetened applesauce, sugar free pudding with GENEPRO Protein, olives, plain yogurt smoothie with fruit , and sugar free Popsicles are what kills cravings for me But I am also only 6 weeks so I haven't moved onto raw veggies yet. I am still in the exploratory phase like you. Still looking for ideas for meals Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Tomorrow I'll make three weeks post op and I've been tracking my calories every day in MyFitnessPal. I'm consistently between 800 and 850 cals every day if I have a Protein shake in the morning. I've started using GENEPRO to cut down on the cals but recently returned to work so added a shake back in for an easy afternoon snack (keeps me away from all the muffins and crazy baked goods everyone in the office brings in all the time!) I'm getting down almost 100 grams of protein every day but feel like I'm getting way too many cals. I keep reading posts of people 3-4 weeks out struggling to get more than 400-500 cals. What am I doing wrong?! I also find that I can drink A LOT at one sitting... like over a cup. I purée Soups and stay away from other carbs.. even those approved for the purée stage like mashed potatoes and apple sauce... I'm just drinking Water, crystal light, puréed soups and protein and I'm getting almost 850 cals! Here is a screenshot of my MyFitnessPal food diary from today.. help! Note-- I ate dinner in two sittings, one at 5:30 and another at 6:30, so all that puréed Soup did not go down all at once. Also-- if I try to eat anything like refried Beans, puréed chicken or anything super rich I get extremely uncomfortable after just two bites so I'm sticking to puréed soups for the time being... Protein Powder Suggestions
BigViffer replied to Shereseed's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OK, this is going to be a bit long winded, but you asked! I am literally going to copy/paste my past post because I don't feel like typing a book. I find the best way to prepare GENEPRO is to make sure the lid is on tightly and then chuck it in the trash. The makers of that stuff are about as shady as they come. They say their magical process reduces the size of Protein molecules! In their own words: They are saying their 10g of special protein is equivalent to 30g whey. I believe this says it best about Genepro: Long story short, they are selling lies. Most likely they are selling BCAA's and calling it protein. Do yourself a favor and buy a reputable protein brand. Gold Standard is good brand. There are so many manufacturers that lie on their labels, you almost have to look them up and see how many lawsuits they have against them before you buy! If their process was true, every other maker out there would be following suit because it is such a cutthroat business. The fact that most retail chains refuse to carry it is evidence of the company's reputation. The only reason I reply (yet again) to this type of post is to protect new patients from wasting money on snakeoil. I need to bookmark my reply to this ridiculous garbage product. It comes up so often it's a PITA to search for it. The manufacturers even admit that there is really only 10 grams of protein, but it is magically fast with absorption and is the equivalent to eating 30 grams of protein. It's a whey based product. It is most definitely not 30 grams of bio-available protein. The calories are just not there either. This stuff does not contribute to satiety, meaning you will still be hungry. At best it leaves protein markers in the blood stream, more likely though your body will start to break down your own muscle tissue for the protein that it needs. It does not provide the building blocks the body needs for muscle tissue, nails and hair. So you are most likely will have issues with that. Just stay away from this crap and ask your NUT if they are just espousing what a marketing rep told or did some actual leg work and investigated it. I'll wager they did not. Oh, and on the subject of unflavored powder. They are just that, unflavored. That does not mean they have no flavor, it merely means that they do not mask the natural flavor of the powder. I tried unflavored in the beginning, but it only worked for me with very strong soups like curries or tomato. -
Favorite unflavored protein?
Serengirl replied to jlb8080's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am an isopure and Genepro fan... -
Have you tried the Genepro unflavored protein? It is virtually flavorless, can go in hot or cold things and packs allot of protein, I find that it doesn't taste bad like the other unflavored proteins.
-
You should know that 'unflavored' means no flavor masking the protein, not that it has no flavor, and do some research on Genepro, it has a bad rep on this site, though I personally have not used it.

Intermittent Fasting Questions
FluffyChix replied to mousecat88's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Oh wow. Really? We were given a book/binder at the 1st RD appointment with all of that information in it and it included post-op scheduled food stages and advancement schedules with sample meals. If you Google Post Op RNY diets you will see several of them. Now whether they mirror your doc's advice or not, who knows. Right? LOL in the early days I had a ton of energy (many do). So I just used that time to my advantage and I took a nap. Every live long day. I work at home. And your schedule sounds fine, but why not add a couple ounce of protein drink in a morning decaf at around 7? Then add another couple ounces of protein drink or a high protein chocolate milk (low carb low sugar) before bed at 7pm? That way you're getting in more liquids and more protein? LC Choco Milk 8fl oz Fairlife Fat Free Milk (high protein) 1/3-1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder (or genepro--whatevs) SF Hershey's Chocolate Syrup You can make it into hot cocoa if you want--just mix the protein up cold first and slowly warm it in the micro.
