  1. GENEPRO and unjury unflavored I have found that both of these are good as far as not changing the flavor, but they do change the texture for me which is unpalatable to me. Not disagreeing, but just to contrast...I can't detect any texture change with genpro, but Unjury tastes AND feels weird to me. If you can get a sample or borrow a scoop from someone in your support group, do that. Everyone's taste/sensitivity is different.
  2. GENEPRO and unjury unflavored I have found that both of these are good as far as not changing the flavor, but they do change the texture for me which is unpalatable to me.
  3. @@trekker954 A few thoughts: Dairy Protein is easier for me than animal protein. I know you said you don't care for it, but I can't imagine doing this without using greek yogurt. Have you tried several brands and flavors? I'm not a big cottage cheese fan but you can't beat it for protein, so I eat it. I also use GENEPRO in my morning coffee, plus if I have Soup or refried Beans, I add a scoop to that. If I have a cup of tea later in the day, I add a scoop. There's no way you should push beyond your restriction to get protein in. That would be antithetical to the surgery we all just had. Your nutritionist must have some rationale for requiring 3 meals a day, I'd ask for the reason for it. If you've never been a snacker/grazer, maybe she'd feel comfortable supporting a 4th or 5th meal a day, or maybe like @@Bufflehead's NUT, you could add Protein shakes without them counting as a 'meal'. That wouldn't be the case with my program, if you eat it you count it, but clearly there are variations and semantics to deal with in comparing us all.

Very good article on Protein Synthesis

Interesting. I'm only on VSG day 5 so I'm still studying and learning. But read 2 things I want to look up more on... 1) they indicated with age Protein needs go up. I would have assumed opposite if I hadn't read that. Calorie needs decrease as we age...so can't wait to find more about that. 2) surprised they only recommend the cheap $10/pound protein. You can't get protein without calories.....So I just ordered GENEPRO which was forty per pound instead of ten but the calorie count was half of the Isopure unflavored powder. 50 cal per "teaspoon" w/30 grams p. --vs-- 100 cal per "scoop" w/ 25 grams P. Anyone have inside or opinion on these? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Ideas for non-meat proteins?

Quest Protein bars. Low sugar or carb control yogurt. Premier Protein. A lot of people on here seem to like GENEPRO (sp) My stomach doesn't like meat either.
  6. First off I will contact my doctor. However I want to hear from you guys on this and how you dealt with it. I was able to eat meat, like steaks chicken, lean pork, ground meats up until about week ago. I'm not sure why but now animal Based Proteins hurt or sit like a rock in my stomach. Its,taking an hour or more for that heaviness pain to go away. I hate that feeling. I am chewing throughly, taking my time eating, serving the proper portion for this stage of my diet. I've even just ate a couple of bites and still had the feeling. I've been trying to eat plant based proteins and or depend on my genepro. Since I don't really have an experience on eating a vegetarian style, I'm struggling. I Pintrest recipes and read up on it however I worry if I am going to eat too many carbs or not get enough protien . My team pushes eating good proteins pretty hard. I do understand why. I just don't get how I can go from eating and tolerating to not being able to. I was sleeved 9/19/16. No real issues other than the normal bitching and moaning newly sleeved folks grapple with. I appreciate your input. Thanks

    Premier protein

Premier is my favorite but you need to try different protein shakes to make sure you are getting your protein in. Many people use GENEPRO, my doctor doesn't recommend it but you just have to try to find something that works. Our bodies won't heal without protein. I started shakes on day 5 and many of them were gross to me. I have a hard time getting even 30 grams of protein a day in. When I went to my one week follow-up my surgeon fussed in me. He says your sleeve won't heal without at least 60-70 grams of protein a day. It also helps you keep your hair. I don't want a hole in my stomach or all my hair to fall out for I get my protein now.

    Premier protein

If they make you feel bloated you might be Lactose Intolerant. I did Premier drinks 2 weeks proop and 4 weeks postop. It gave me the back door trots so bad I couldn't leave the house without a pad on. TMI I know but so very true!! My PA told me after I was almost done with my postop that I was more than likely Lactose Intolerant. I also use GENEPRO. It is great stuff. And it is made by a VETERAN. So we get to support them too. Lots of peeps become Lactose Intolerant after their WLS.

    Premier protein

I also use GENEPRO protein. It's odorless and tasteless and you can put it in almost anything. I ordered it off Amazon. The nutrition information says that one scoop is 30 grams of protein because of the way the body absorbs it.... But I only count it as 15 grams Also I have found that for me, putting the premier Protein Shakes over ice helps me drink it better because it's not as thick when some of the ice melts.
  10. Just when you think you've got this whole thing down; I'm stumped. I'm just 13 1/2 weeks post op and so far, this has been going well and I am losing well. Even went on a 4 day cruise on lost a pound. My instructions all along, or maybe I listened in the beginning was to stop when I felt full. I was very cautious of this as I never wanted to not have I ever gotten sick. I do use genepro in my morning coffee. But I try and make sure the remaining protein is from food. I've only recently been told I can add vegetables, but very sparingly. Mostly protein. As I progress to more dense protein, it often fills me quickly. I just noticed today, if I'm not even getting in 3 ounces before I feel full, I won't meet my protein goal. I can't just keep eating chicken and eggs. I'm not a fan of cottage cheese or yogurt. I'm also trying different cuts of beef, lamb and such. My NUT really said to eat only three meals a day. What is more important, stopping when full, or should I push through to eat that last ounce of protein. Or should I have four meals a day, or at least four times, I go for protein.

    Post op liquid diet

@@Butterflywarrior I HATED Isopure unflavored, it was disgusting. I use GENEPRO, but I'm going to keep the one you use in mind just in case Genepro becomes intolerable as well.

    Full liquids.

There is no protein patch, I struggled the first few days but it got better right after I passed 7 or 8 days. I tried all the Protein Shakes and Premier works best for me. It is creamy, not chalky. The ones you mix with Water are horrible to me. I prefer the vanilla and sometimes chocolate Premier, the other flavors taste very artificial to me, yuck. My surgeon fussed at me on my one week ppst-op about protein, if you don't get it in you will not heal, and your hair loss will be worse. As a last resort some people buy GENEPRO and mix it with water and something like Crystal Light or Mio drops. There is controversy about it though, my doctor does not recommend it.

    Any ideas? Getting sick!

I like flavorless GENEPRO Protein powder added to SF hot coco, herbal tea or broth. It is 30 grams of protein.

    Any ideas? Getting sick!

I ordered the Protein mix from the site, 30 grams in one tablespoon. I put it in my spit pea Soup tonight and I had no idea it was there. GENEPRO medical grade protein. Also, pre surgery up until the last two days I was allowed one meal with 4 oz chicken breast or turkey. And I had a lot of homemade jello! I used Costco's Premiere Protein, premixed and snuck a cup of nonfat Greek yogurt with chocolate Protein powder sprinkled on top of every spoonful, for variation. In Song, MarkieZ
  15. I wish I'd known about GENEPRO powder, I was so sick of chocolate "shakes" after four weeks of them... Otherwise, I was pretty knowledgeable after all the time spent in classes and support groups, and reading the internet and such. I think there are unknowns that nobody can prepare you for because they'll be uniquely yours, because it's the mental component we struggle with that makes up the majority of this fight.
  16. The things I wish I knew before surgery are: 1. Get the Vitamin Patches. 2. Avoid the Protein shakes as much as possible - try to get as much protein from real food as you can.Your taste buds will change. 3. Fluids are a constant struggle, have a variety of options available. 4. An ice pack was my best friend while recovering. 5. You will have several incisions and they do take time to heal. 6. It's difficult to lay on your right side. (I'm 6 weeks out & still can't lay on my right side). 7. unjury Protein powder taste great in chicken Soup. 8. GENEPRO is a good protein powder but be careful what you mix it with. 9. Any local support groups you can attend are very beneficial. 10. Every day it will get a little bit better. Post op liquid diet

I was sleeved 11/8 and since I already had difficulties with sweets (they just never did taste all that spectacular), my surgeon and NUT recommended that I take my Protein by adding unflavored protein to broth for my main meals then have a half portion of a sweet Protein shake if I thought I wanted a sweet thing at the end of the day. I had ordered the GENEPRO unflavored protein and it's okay, but I think that I might have preferred the Beneprotein by Nestle that the hospital gave me post op.

Anyone willing to share their food diary?

Bear in mind that my fridge is emptying out because I'm moving this weekend...normally I'd have more store-bought stuff on my menu for the day. This is me halfway into week 7 post-op. Today it's been like so: Breakfast: 1 scrambled egg with onion and a little cheese, some fruit puree from Trader Joe's (a few spoonfulls) Protein drink (1 scoop of GENEPRO with a 16oz cup of Crystal Light mix/water Lunch: 1.5oz of chopped up chicken satay from a restaurant I like (tossed in the peanut sauce) and a couple TBSP of potato salad with egg Dinner: A small side order of String Bean Chicken from Panda Express grabbed on my way to work (I didn't quite finish it) Will probably add a little protein powder to my drink later to make sure I get enough for the day, as well.

    Homemade Shakes vs Store bought?

I make my own with fairlife milk (choco and plain), GENEPRO, and PB2. I might try swapping the chocolate for plain and adding a couple of slices of frozen banana. HW 385 SW 359 CW 335 (50lbs down!) Sleeved 10/5/16

    Pre op diet

Maybe try to put some extra liquid in them. Be it Water, milk, Almond milk. You could order some GENEPRO online. It is unflavored and is really great to add to other things. coffee if you drink it. If you add it to something warm temper it with some warm water get it mixed well then add it. Or you can make SF pudding or Jello and use some of your Protein Drink in it. It is very important to follow your Dr.'s guidelines. Good Luck

    food ideas ?

I made cottage cheese "fluff" and added two scoops of GENEPRO. I divided it into 7 - 5oz cups at 122cals 14g carbs and 23 grams Protein. HW 385 SW 359 CW 335 (50lbs down!) Sleeved 10/5/16
  22. I have to say, I was a GENEPRO skeptic but I've only been using this for 2 months because I cannot tolerate others. Had blood work today and Protein level is perfect. So, I shall continue Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. Deli meats, dark meat poultry and seafood are usually well tolerated early on, soft cheeses, greek yogurt, SF pudding made with greek yogurt and/or Protein powder, try alternate Protein drinks (I was never impressed with RTD drinks and found that I could do a better job of adapting the flavor with the powders and other added flavors to taste. I wouldn't be overly dependent upon that GENEPRO stuff as the main thing it can be guaranteed to produce is expensive urine. While they may not have been shut down as a fraud yet, it sure checks all the boxes of a typical nutritional supplement scam (too good to be true - 30g protein in only 15g of product, just what is "equivalent" protein?, proprietary product - nobody knows what it really is and they aren't telling, no independent verification of their claims...) 0

    Protein Shakes Preop

Pre-surgery I liked most of the powders, Quest has some good flavors. I mixed them with almond milk and ice and whizzed them in the Ninja. It was like an ice milk shake. Post surgery I am struggling with all of them. I have tried 10 different kinds, pre-made and powders. They are all so sweet and fake tasting and have a terrible aftertaste. And they are upsetting my stomach. I ordered GENEPRO today, they is some controversy around it but I have got to find something I can handle.
