1. All the problems you list COULD be related to the acid, which isnt that abnormal. It would be a good precautionary step to get some imaging done just in case. But if your surgeon is confident, then it's your call whether you want a second opinion. Acid can swell up the esophogus and slow down the movement of food. Does it get better when you take the acid blockers? Does it feel like food is stacking up before the stomach (intense, focused discomfort)? Are you chewing things up really well and eating slowly? If you get imaging that shows youre structurally fine, then I'd work with the choice of foods. Work with your nutritionist to find foods that don't trigger the acid. For me, I couldnt touch yogurt for 3 months. But now I'm off the pills and love yogurt.
2. The Protein is to help with healing your "new stomach" was the way it was explained to me. Plus your stomach is swollen because of the surgery, and liquids are easier then the solid food to digest, plus not get stuck on the way in or out. My steps were as follows for being "sleeved': Needing to drink Water & protein after surgery, 1 oz every 15 minutes while you're awake. After going home, for the next week, Clear Liquids, Protein drinks (the amount of protein per day depends on your weight at the date of surgery). Then for weeks 2 & 3, I was able to add puree'd Soups to the list. As long as they were lump & chunk free. for this I have a stick blender (it blended canned Soup up great). I can also have yogurt. Then on week 4 I will be able to add in mushy meats, like tuna fish and canned chicken, mixed with low fat mayo, I just need to make sure everything is moist, and chewed VERY well into small pieces. After that, I can start to add other things back n, being very careful, as it might go down one day, and it's a "no go" on a different day. I have found that I had to slow way down on putting food in my mouth, and chew, chew, chew. Or else it will feel like it is stuck in your throat, or it comes back up. I will say, that in checking different web-sites, there are different time lines on how long you stay on what. check with your surgeon, they have their plans set up for a reason. But you can always ask questions. Good luck, and see you on the other side :0)
3. LOL! I've never been a fan of Greek Yogurt (I hear it's an acquired taste), but I'm loving my Yoplait Light in yummy flavors - Boston Cream Pie is the best! Of course, I'm still supplementing with protein shakes, but that little extra taste is yum!
4. Be careful of the sugar content in the yogurts!

What do you eat for breakfast?

I always have a greek yogurt. Easy to grab and bring to work. On the weekends, maybe cottage cheese or eggs or a shake. Nothing fancy.
6. Rev Me Up!

Week One behind me! Welcome , Week Two!

It seems that people have one or the other - either they have diarrhea or they don't poop for a week. Definitely, all the artificial sweeteners will do it to you. Good idea to move to more broth - it also has sodium which will help you retain a little Water. That sounds bad, but it is good if you are worried about dehydration. Once you get to mushies and you start eating yogurt and cottage cheese, you'll see it swing the other way. Glad to hear you are feeling better. The first month is tough, but the first 2 weeks are specifically hard. Physical and emotional changes are so intense in that time. Rest assured, you will feel more normal in a few weeks. Keep coming back to the board, we're all here for you! Lara

Had Second Lap Band Fill Last Monday

Yes! They can take part of it out. They don't have to remove the entire fill. You can always go back later for another fill. That is what I did. I can't remember all the cc numbers now, but I had half of what they put in removed, went back a month later and had that amount plus some put back in. It was such a relief when he removed that little bit. After having been stuck on mashed potatoes and yogurt. It was wonderful!

January 10th, 2013 sleevers!

I'm doing okay with things like Protein shakes (about 6-8 oz but it can take me 30-45 minutes to get it down), yogurt (4 oz in about 30 minutes), applesauce (4 oz in about 30 minutes). Warm non-calorie liquids I seem to be able to get down easier than cool (I don't drink anything cold). So like you, I need to improve in that area. On reality I feel like I could transition to puréed foods right now but unfortunately am on the above diet for another two weeks :-(

Not exactly sure

EmmyJ I normally eat one egg with a tablespoon of turkey sausage crumbles and a tablespoon of low fat cheese for breakfast. Lunch is either a tuna packet or 2oz of deli meat with a light string cheese. I eat two snacks that are 80 calorie low fat Greek yogurt or 2 string cheeses (depends on if I had string cheese for lunch) and dinner is 2 to 2.5 oz of meat (chicken or pork) and 2 oz of a veggie. I normally drink a shake or a protein water in the evenings. Sound good? I'm really starting to 2nd guess myself. [emoji848]

What Were Your Favorite Mushies?

Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, retried beans, sweet potatoes, baked potatoes, split pea soup, ricotta cheese w/pizza sauce, ( awesome) canned tuna/chicken/salmon, hummus, eggsalad! The possibilities are endless!!!!!! I actually looooved the mushy stage:)
11. I am in love with Greek Yogurt!!!!!!! I'm 7 days post opp & today I had to have 2 containers of it, do u think that's ok???

Last Legs

It is a salem occation today as it is the final day of people food for me ! I must start the Pre op diet as of tomorrow. I have had pretty much all the foods I like in the last 3 days. I had a lunch at eastside marios, I had fish and chips at a local Joeys, H&D rocky road ice cream, m&ms, and a nice peanut butter sandwich. Tomorrow I feast on Yogurt and Cottage cheese (bacteria filled milk and it's by-products) for the next ten days! It will be tough (since I will have daily access to some yummy food (pasta, sauces, Brocettes, chicken kiev, steak, stew, Clubs, Burritos, fries, various other potato dishes, vegy galore, pastry, sweets, ) SIGH! This also means that in 10 days I will be turned to the banded side. I may have to change my name to something like "Darth Bandito" or "Chewawacca" or "Luke soothimaker" or how about "Band Solo" Knaw... I'll just stick with Mr. Yoda... Oh well, it is for the greater good... I will just enjoy what I can have, miss what I can't, eat slow, eat often and muddle my way through... Viva the resistance! Today is my last day of people food!
13. Another March3rd-er (?) having an easy time of it. Since day 1 post op they given me vitamin water and a small yogurt drink to take in addition to water, and yesterday (day 3), I had some cottage cheese (considered a purée here - OMG in Estonia they must love it because the dairy case seems to have more cottage cheese options than yogurt ones), and baby food (the kind that come in the squeezable soft packs). It’s weird to me that both of these foods (in addition to other purées) were recommended to me, since that wasn’t the case when I had my first surgery in Mexico. In any event, since I’m living out of a hotel until next week I don’t have a lot of options food wise. Long story short, I’m doing well getting my liquids in, ok with the protein, and the purées didn’t cause any issues. If I hadn’t gone through this before, I’d be worried, but as it is I’m feeling great. The first time I did this (sleeve in 2017j, I was the only one in the hospital with little to no pain, was walking around at least 4 hours a day, and I actually accused my surgeon of not having done the surgery despite the scars and drainage tube coming out of my body. She told me that some people are just lucky, they go through surgery and the post op period without any problems and that I should be thankful for it. She even showed me a picture of my excised stomach to prove it. My current surgeon told me that he did check out my sleeve before he made it even smaller for the RNY and told me it was perfect, so whatever doubts I had in my mind for the past three years were put to rest. The one thing I do know is that transitioning to soft or mushy foods will be, not necessarily problematic, but that we’ll feel it more. That’s why I’m focusing on maintaining good habits (weigh or measure food, no drinking 30 min before and after any food), since I think that’s one of the main reasons my sleeve failed the first time.

New Lapbander

Hello Mandi Thank you for the quick response, I was banded by Dr.Cobourn a week ago today May 26th. I like the oatmeal idea, but I dont think so on the cottage cheese, not a big fan of cottage cheese. I have been having Optifast for breakfast, chicken broth for lunch followed by Jello with liquid yogurt(Yop), and the same for dinner pretty boring. Oh well I made it through 3 weeks of Optifast I will survive one more week of liquids. Maria

Diet Prior To Surgery?

I'm to do a 2 wk diet of 2 Protein Shakes and a no carb dinner. chicken, fish, or veggies. They want me to lose 10 lbs before my surgery date and I'm already down 6 lbs. without really working too hard at it. HOWEVER, that has been my pattern for the last 8 yrs. Lose 5, gain 6, ~ lose 3, gain 5, ~ lose 8, gain 12..... Ya, do the math and it's been a steady gain for years of struggling. So, I'll lose the 10 as required and can't wait to NOT put back on it back on this time! I'm also stocking up on supplies for after my surgery. Tomatoe soup from costco, butternut squash & carrot soup, my Protein, will start buying yogurt in the next few weeks and mashed potatoes. I think I'm going to start bagging up things in 4 oz containers or ziplocks so I have it handy. My sister had bypass (lost 125lbs) and suggested re-fried Beans with cheese. I love Mexican food so that could be a real treat for me. I'm off to go shopping, julz~

Guilty Bad Day

Vines, Your right....soo right. I shouldnt feel guilty and your right, nights like last night dont happen often enough. I think I felt guilty because I am sorta stuck at not loosing anything and not really exercising much...I have 40 pounds to go to goal, and I wanna hit goal by my bandaversary. I just dont wanna screw this up. My father has given me sooo much encouragement and I really wanna do well with this for him and my self... I was drinking toasted almonds...NOT made with skim milk....geeezzz. Your right....guilt is a useless emotion..And as far as the food was concerned at the birthday party, I thought about it today, I really didnt do too much damage there. I had meat balls, chicken piccada, and potato chips ... I ate like six sweedish style meatballs in tomato sause with a roll......a chicken fillet...and a lot of chips. they go down so easy. Nothing got stuck. I didn't PB anything back up...I didn't drink with my meals....I didn't have any veggies, but so what....A small slice of birthday cake.....like three inches by three inches, but it had cannoli filling in the middle of it and whip cream icing.....Then when I got to the bar, I had four drinks I think.....I just started adding things up and thats what made me feel guilty....Well, I had to shovel out today so I guess that burned up the excess calories... I didnt do too bad today. I really havnt been in the mood to eat today. I drank a protein shake for breakfast, hadda yogurt for lunch...and some coffee...Im planning on having another shake here soon. That damn stress seems to find me no matter where I try and hide Tomorrow will be better....I will be back into my routine....and then Thursday life will be back to normal. We go to court for custody on Wednesday. I dont have any doubt as to what the outcome is going to be, Im just not looking forward to being in court. Its what I have to do though. Okay...Thanks for listening to me babble....I do appreciate all the support I get here. Have a great night everyone~

Holy mother of god!

This is actually the first day that I am a tiny bit hungry. I stayed only 1 night in the hospital and have been walking around my neighborhood since Wednesday. I feel good, sore, but good. My dr. Said not to worry about the Protein till Sunday. That has taken a load off. I'm just sipping my decaf diet iced tea ( very weakened). Sunday I will attempt some shake and then the following day yogurt. I am actually excited and nervous about the yogurt, who would have thought. Lol Hang in there. Just keep moving!
18. You can do simple things that won't really change your habits. If you have dairy, make sure it's full fat (2%milk not skim, full fat yogurt and cottage cheese not 0%). If you do Protein bars, switch them out for some whole grain bars with more carbs. Add in just one more healthy but high calorie snack to your daily menu... 1/2 cup of nuts, a banana, tuna or crab salad made with real mayo and served with crackers, whole grain Cereal with whole milk, a cup of raw veggies with dip or ranch dressing, etc. this is what I did when I hit goal and wanted to stop losing. Are you seeing a therapist or have access to a counseling group? Being afraid to eat more in order to stop losing weight is just as much of an eating disorder as eating too much.

No Bread?????

I think food is so much a personal body thing. I have no fill in yet (4 weeks out). I had my first bite of bread today and it felt gross going down. I don't know if it was a problem or if it was me. I'm not much of a bread eater (even the french bread I tried) unless its a sprouted grain type. I kinda blew everything today after that and had fettucini alfredo for lunch. I was at a lunch and taking small pieces and chewing 25 times just wasn't working. I only ate about 1/2 cup. I'm just so bummed because I haven't been losing and really don't have much in my diet yet - mushies and fishes - or the old standby yogurt. No change in 9 days. I know I'm still in the healing process but... Anyway, I'm excited to see that most people can have popcorn...and asparagus. I love pureeing asparagus into the 'fake guacamole'. In fact, I will do that tonight and have it on fish or chicken. Okay, my life is looking up.

Short weekend, busy weekend, but finally able to post to my blog. Went to see Kenny Chesney, ate at Toby Keith's restraunt (I Love this Bar & Grill). I got the ribs & chicken, ate the ribs and 1 bite of chicken - full. I did have a drink, strawberry margrita - liquid calories, I know, but hey, I was having a good time :rolleyes2: Bought another drink at the concert - $12.00 for basically sugar. Won't ever do that again! My daughter had a great time, it was her first concert. The Friday night festivals threw me off the weekend, Didn't exercise at all all weekend! Sunday night my son was playing in a concert for family & friends, we had a cookout, I ate pretty healthy, made me chicken, but did have a little macaroni salad - yum. Yesterday, my band was WIDE OPEN, I could eat anything and everything and basically did. Very hungry yesterday, not sure what the heck was going on. This morning, back to restriction again. So glad of that :blushing: I am going to be so dead in a few hours, first of all, didn't get to bed until around 12:30 last night, got out of bed at 4:00 am this morning. My son had to be at the airport by 5:30 this morning. He is flying to Reno with his school. He won first place in the State competition on his Business Essay, now he is competing in the Nationals. He'll be gone for 6 whole days! I'm so proud of my boy! He's such a good kid, an all american boy. If I can just keep those darned girls away from him. lol. Anyhow, didn't get much sleep, so I'm sure it will catch up with me soon! Menu today Bfast blueberry yogurt/granola Lunch salad Dinner roasted chicken wt 180.7 - YUCK - TOM IS DUE exercise -

Protein Shakes after WLS?...

Miss Wifey 21, Welcome to the other side , hope your recovery is quick In answer to your questions my experience with protien shakes or protien in general is as follows . 1) vitacost.com is the site i get all of my supplied there. also Vitacost brands are excellent , Delivery to The Philadelphia area is approx 4 day. I buy the vanilla for my breakfast and lunch shakes . The unflavored protien comes in handy during the pureed and full foods phases. you can add it to almost anything. 4) I have added plain Greek yogurt to my shakes from day 1 ...18 Grams of protien is excellent . Just keep in mind your body can only absorb 30 grams of protien at one meal , so don't waste your money or effort try to get more that that at one time 2) G3 Gatorade is high in protien and is good later on for the pureed phase and everything after that ( My NUT recommended this ) 3) My NUT recommended unjury.com . I just have not tried there stuff but she raves about it. 4) The unflavored can be added to anything and i find it very useful in meeting my daily numbers . 5) the most important one is sugar free Popsicles to be more specific the Tropical flavored ones are off the hook AWESOME 15 calories a pieces . you will never look at Popsicles the same way again . They are also very helpful in fighting HEAD hunger . Also they do count towards you Fluid requirements . 6.) my personal experience is that all of the pre-made shakes are high in sugars or fats, I personally don't want to run the riisk of DUMPING . I have had several experiences with things getting stuck and that was enough for me . I would suggest you do what i have done get 2 shaker/blender bottles , They cost 5 buck a piece on Amazon , Leave one at work and bring a baggie of your protien mix to work with you . I always add Vanilla protien powder & citricel orange flavored Fiber mix and blend ... instant creamcicle taste Not sure if you are aware of this but add fiber to your shakes , this will help to keep you regular , and that is very important . I hope some of this helps . Its a tough choice we have made but trust me it is well worth it . I do suggest you contact your surgeon before you try anything anyone suggests on this forum ( including me ) .. no one here knows your case and you want to be sure it is reviewed. Best of luck , I'm sure you will be awesome at rockin' the weight loss Have a great day RJ

I Am Ready!!

Greek yogurt, sugar-free pudding, Jolly Roger popsicles (they're AWESOME), and some V-8 or V-8 Fusion Light (to get your veggies in!). Tea and chicken broth taste really good after your surgery - the warmth makes your tummy feel good.
23. Ok guys, I have seen threads before where people said they have a hard time getting much down in the morning. I too have this problem, the bad part is, my tummy is hungry, it makes growling noises, I feel tired and faint, but no matter how much I try the thought of food makes me sick, I feel nauseous looking at it in the morning. I try to drink a yogurt, or have some milk or juice, but I can't even think about food in the morning. By lunch time I'm fine and by dinner I can eat any thing I want (more then I should) What the heck am I supposed to do for breakfast?? We don't eat lunch here until around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon so I have to eat something in the morning.

Morning Eating Problems

Hey Kat, I almost have the very same experience with not wanting anything to eat in the morning, the thought of food makes me sick, and feeling a lil nausea until the afternoon. I also try to get down a small carb control yogurt, but I am pretty sick of Protein drinks. I found at the grocery store some Pepto Bismol tablets and I started taking them two days ago and I have no more nausea feeling in the morning. I still do not want to eat but at least I don't have that sick feeling to my stomach. By afternoon I am ready for a little something but my first fill seemed to have kicked in really good the 2nd week and my fill was on May 18, 2006. Try some of the Pepto Bismol and I guarantee you feel 100% better.

Hello all

I've had 2 fills, the first 3 cc in June and 1 cc in August. I think I may need another 1-2 cc but it's pretty close to right. I think I can still eat too much "because it's there" but I'm trying to retrain myself that I can save it for later. I am the "go box" queen. Portion sizes are really wayyy too big but u don't feel like u are wasting money if u can eat it 2-3 times. Chicken is the number one food on my list...grilled, baked or fajitas. I have also found the wraps with 90 calories and 8 grams of protein. I don't eat much bread and am usually giving pieces of the wrap to my dogs. As far as a sandwich or burger at least 1 bun's worth will be picked off. Some veggies but I spend most of my food allowance trying to get in the 60 grams of protein. Some junk but just in a smaller portion, the 100 calorie bags are my friend. Fried stuff makes me feel bad, usually diarrhea. I eat yogurt or cottage cheese for breakfast...not a breakfast person at all, really don't want to eat in the mornings much, but u have to. I use the WW or LC meals as backup in case there is nothing I want to fix or there is nothing at work that will work. I try to shut down the food by 6 pm and make myself some decaf if I'm feeling deprived or try to get the rest of the day's fluid in. I try to keep a running calorie count in my head and try to put the brakes on at 1200-1500 calories. Hope this helps....the weight loss is slowing down and it looks like I must make friends with exercise. Surprise....it doesn't hurt as much as it used to and I'm trying to go the gym 2-3 times a week. My exercise is simple at present, 20 minutes on the treadmill and 9 of the machines, 40 reps at whatever weight for that exercise.
