September surgery buddies!!

I'm not even allowed the yogurt preop! The one thing they said I could have is one cucumber or pickle per day if I needed something to crunch. I bought a huge jar of pickles this week. 😁 -

I’m on a two week liquid diet and it’s been a killer (again! This is my second bariatric surgery.) I can have protein shakes or greek yogurt for my ‘meals’ every three hours. I would be lying if I said I had been perfect throughout this process. I’ve slipped up a few times by stealing a fry off my husbands plate or eating a couple of olives when I was simply sooo hungry. I’m going to have the hiatal hernia repair during my surgery on the 29th and the revision to RNY, as well. The GERD burns me up a lot of the time so I take esomeprazole in the morning and Pepcid in the evening. And thank goodness for Tums during the day! -
Apologies for the inconsistent message - I meant asking more long term once I’ve moved into maintenance, as I am hoping it won’t take too long to get there. For now, I’m still strict on plain Greek yogurt, eggs, chicken salad, etc.

You will probably get mixed responses here about that because everyone is different in what they need to do to stay on the right side of the slippery slope. By that I mean that some people are able to have a little sweet treat here and there and be satisfied with a small amount on truly rare occasion but others need to 100% abstain in order to maintain that control. I was sleeved I’m March 2021 and I have found that I actually do crave sweets more post surgery and I used to be like you and crave salty most of the time. I do have the occasional chocolate covered strawberry or frozen yogurt bar and they both have sugar. For the most part I am able to satisfy my sweet cravings with fresh fruit but when that doesn’t work I try to have one of these healthier choices that I actually still enjoy. I think You just have to be honest with yourself and be willing to reassess often and make changes if you find that you are having those treats more than once in a while. Also, it’s probably best to save those for once you reach maintenance. Having said that I tried a few things early out just to make sure I could tolerate them post surgery but of course that just made it take longer for me to lose. The thing you want to keep in mind is that those hunger hormones do eventually come back. Sooner for some than others and it is ideal to do everything you can to lose your weight before that. I have seen people who have lost after their hunger comes back but they say it is that much harder so if you can just avoid these foods until maintenance you will most likely make things easier for yourself.

I take our favorite Mayo and use 1/2 of it and 1/2 plain greek yogurt - choose which ever variation your plan might suggest. Add some protein and helps cut calories. We usually use Hellman’s (the olive oil one works well with this) and occasionally have grabbed the store brand to do this with as well. I have been doing this long before surgery and actually my kids (adults) ask for me to make it that way now. Even use this for deviled eggs. I have also done this with sour cream (half and half) and no one ever noticed. Trust me, my family will point out if anything is “off”.

Purée has been really challenging for me. I had a really horrible dumping episode during my liquid stage when I ate some pho broth and since then, I cannot even look at a broth without feeling sick. I'm still doing a lot of full liquids like shakes, yogurt, and protein puddings, but here is what I have added as purée: refried beans + taco seasoning + a sprinkle of low fat cheese chicken salad (canned chicken, pureed + fat free greek yogurt + low fat mayo + celery salt + pepper) mashed potatoes (the low sodium instant kind) french style scrambled eggs (really runny) + turkey sausage (pureed) + a sprinkle of low fat cheese sunny side up egg egg salad (same as the chicken salad, but add a bit of pickle juice; eggs are pureed) I'm not going to lie, getting past the texture & smell of the chicken salad was ROUGH, but it tasted good.

I’m 4 days out from gastric sleeve and hiatal hernia repair as of today. Woke up a little dehydrated this morning and not feeling great. Yesterday was the first day I missed my water goal. (yes I had other things that contribute to my water, but I’ve been pretty good about getting 64 oz plus those other liquids) I have had super low energy today - sleeping way more than normal. I’m working hard to get my water in but no matter how much I drink my mouth seems dry - and this stubborn headache won’t go away. Today has thrown me for quite a loop because I expected to feel better day 4 than I did day 2 and that is not the case. The day after surgery I was walking around the ward and feeling relatively good - considering the surgery. I was up and around and went for a short walk on day 2. Day 3 I didn’t do as much but I did get time in on the recumbent bike - energy level was low, so I thought I could take it easier on the bike and still hit my movement goal. I have been getting my water in ok today - despite the nausea when I got up earlier, had a frozen juice popsicle and that went down ok. Had some protein soup (broth only with protein powder) - powder was not the best with that broth, but I got it down. I’m struggling with the shakes today (which I usually have no issues with - but today they aren’t appealing). I struggle with artificial sweeteners - they upset my stomach and can trigger headaches, so I’m limited in some of the options I have during my liquid phase. The yogurts suggested are of course the ones with artificial sweetener which makes them not ideal on a day I’m already not feeling well. Which eliminates yogurt based smoothies that are suggested in place of a store bought shake. Can anyone tell me if you experienced anything like this your first week? I’m still on full liquids, transition to purées Wednesday. Maybe it’s the low calories kicking my butt energy wise? I’m struggling to even hit 800 calories, my goals are 800-1200 … I’m getting about 770-780 most days. I don’t think it’s a Keto flue because I’m allowed fruit juice and I use that for popsicles. I haven’t had caffeine in months so I don’t think it’s withdraw from that either. I’ll call my nutritionist Monday if I’m still not feeling well, but since it’s the weekend I thought I would ask if others experienced anything similar and how you got through. Any suggestions or advice appreciate. Thanks in advance.

Before my VSG, I only lost 2 lbs during my 2 week pre-op diet! Talk about discouraging! They had me only eating/drinking protein shakes and greek yogurt. I never eat yogurt because it’s too high in calories and carbs. I think that is what kept me from losing any weight. However, my surgery went very well and I recovered quickly so there’s that… This time around (I’m getting ready for a revision from VSG to RNY) I’m drinking protein shakes but not eating much greek yogurt. I’m sipping on chicken bone broth a lot instead. I started my pre-op diet 4 days ago and I’ve lost 3 lbs. so far. Hang in there! It’s all going to work out great! Just stick to your pre-op diet and everything will be fine. You’ll start dropping weight after your surgery. I lost almost 80 lbs in about 3 months after my VSG.

I never tried baby food. The thought of it was disgusting (weird how we feed it to babies, though!). I ate things like refried beans and hummus a lot. And Greek yogurt.

One items that I tried and still use that kills two birds with one stone is Oikos Pro Yogurt. It has 20 grams of protein so you get a shot of protein along with the puree type meal. I still use these for breakfast nearly every day.

How long after gastric sleeve are you at risk of getting Dumping Syndrome ?

Maybe try frozen yogurt instead of ice cream? Or a sugar free brand. -

I agree it is amazing the differences in the programs. Pre-op 2 weeks but split. 1st week I replace 2 meals with liquids but can eat 1 meal of solid food. Second week only liquids. Also calorie restriction of 800 max per day. Liquids allowed are protein shakes, skim milk, SF jello, SF pudding, 100% fruit juice (4 oz per day), broth, SF popsicles ,low-fat SF yogurt Post op - Same as above but can add in thinned cream of wheat, and strained cream soups. Expected to last 1-2 weeks but can only be advanced with Dr permission. Food not allowed are drinks with added sugar, caffeine or carbonation, and whole milks Pureed stage - once allowed I can add in scrambled eggs, low fat cottage cheese, mashed beans, applesauce, baby food, and any pureed fruits, veggies and meats. Not allowed is previous list plus fried foods and concentrated sweets. Expected time frame is 2 weeks but can advance as I feel comfortable. Mechanical soft - add in boiled eggs, fish, tofu, ground lean meat, low fat canned chicken and fish, canned fruits (no syrup), soft fresh fruits, soft cooked veggies, cooked cereals made with milk, beans, and toasted whole wheat bread. Not allowed crunchy foods, rice, popcorn, high-fat meats, high -fat starches. Can't advance with out Dr approval. Mine is: Pre-op: 1 day before surgery - clear liquids only, ie water, clear broth, fruit flavored drinks, plain/flavored gelatins, smooth fruit iced or popsicles, protein water. Possibly 2 ounces of milk of magnesia. Post op hospital: diet cranberry juice, fortified protein gelatin/drinks, protein supplement drinks. Stage 1 (wk 1-3): low-carb low-fat protein drinks pre-made or powder, non fat or 1% milk, unsweetened soy milk, sugar-free non-fat pudding, sugar-free low carb yogurt or plain kefir, strained reduced fat cream soup, strained broth soup, sugar-free crystal light, gelatin, popsicles, herbal tea. Stage 2 (wk 4-6): eggs, soft tofu, protein drinks from stage 1, low carb Greek yogurt, plain kefir, cottage cheese, other soft cheeses, sugar-free non-fat pudding or custard , reduced fat cream soups pureed chunks, pureed soups, non-fat refried beans, pureed Tuna or chicken salad, pureed soft cooked non-gassy vegetables, unsweetened applesauce, pureed soft fruit with no seeds or skins. Stage 3 (permanent lifestyle) : continue to take in fluid and protein goals, gradually introduced solid foods one at a time, chew all foods until smooth and the consistency of applesauce. Then it gives a bunch of foods to limit or minimize for lifelong healthy eating, but it's mostly non brainers like fried foods, high fat meats, ice creams, french fries, granola bars, large portions of fat etc. It does say avoid gas forming vegetables unless they don't bother me, or stringy vegetables like celery and asparagus unless they're cut into small pieces. -

For sure. It's actually surprising to me just how different they seem to be? Here's mine: Pre-op: Two weeks long -- Only 3-4 protein shakes per day and unlimited clear, sugar-free liquids (which can include SF Popsicles and SF Jello). Post-Op Stage 1: Days 1-3 -- Only Sugar-Free Clear Liquids Stage 2: Days 4-7 -- Add in Protein Drinks, Skim or 1% Milk. Can also use Unsweetened soy or almond milk. Stage 3a: Days 8-14 -- Add in Cottage Cheese, Yogurt and/or Ricotta Cheese Stage 3b: Days 15-30 -- Add in Pureed Meats, Beans, Low Fat Cream Soups, Cooked Pureed Veggies. Eggs allowed, but must be soft. Fruit not allowed. Stage 4: Days 31-60 -- Low Fat Solid Foods, focused on protein first and introducing only 1 new food at a time. Fruits and veggies okay, but should be cooked. Best to avoid nuts and seeds. Stage 5: Lifelong -- Add in Raw fruits and veggies as tolerated. How does that compare to everyone else? -

My paperwork says I can have eggs and soft tofu for pureed, so I'll probably try to soft scramble eggs with cheese. Small curd cottage cheese will probably also be my friend, as I already love it and plan on making it sweet with pureed fruit like peaches or savory with mustard or hot sauce. Refried beans thinned with chicken broth, Greek yogurt, and mashed cauliflower or potato cheddar soup with added unflavored protein powder are some ideas. I once ate at a place that had pureed carrots with cinnamon and maybe I'll try recreating that. Maybe shredded to hell crock pot chicken??? Just remember if you add protein powder to anything hot, it will ball up and curdle, so you have let it cool and slowly mix it in. -

I also start my pre-op diet on the 5th but my 2 weeks are split. The 1st week I can have 1 meal (high protein, low carb ) per day but the second week is only liquids. I also have to keep my calories under 800 per day - yuck. You sound very much like my twin. I have 4 different kinds of premier shakes,5 yummy sounding keto shakes, several different types of broth and canned soups that I can strain, pudding, jello and I'll buy yogurt when it gets closer. I also have a clever fox journal that has spots for pictures and measurements to keep me motivated. I'm as prepared as much as I think I can be. Thinking and preparing keeps me busy and makes the time pass faster. I get more and more nervous the closer it gets, but excited too. Can't wait to have a new me -
Much happiness and good thoughts to everyone who is having surgery this week! I'm officially 1 week post-op RNY (with hernia repair)! Here is what I've learned this week from my surgeon, my partner (who is a nurse) and myself: 1) If you are in pain, take your meds. There is no shame in taking pain meds for a major surgery. Everyone's pain tolerance is different and I have been in a fair to high amount of pain since surgery. I'm not sure if it's the RNY plus the hernia repair that is causing this level of pain, but I took whatever pain meds the nurses gave during my hospital stay (there was a combination) and then every 6 hours after I was discharged for the first 3 days and now I'm only taking them when I feel pain, but I still feel pain, so I'm still taking them. 2) Rest. I'm a person who is always on the go and it's been difficult for me to just REST. It's driving my partner (the nurse) crazy. He keeps reminding me "It's only been ____ days! You just had two major surgeries! Rest please!! Sit down! Take a nap!" Don't feel guilty about resting your first week (or weeks) home. 2) PLAN PLAN PLAN. Once I was on full liquids I was shocked at how low the protein value is per BARIATRIC SERVING and quickly realized if I didn't plan what I was going to eat and when I was going to eat it, this will get out of control really fast. Yes, a container of protein greek yogurt has 20 grams of protein in it (a 5.3 oz container), but if you are only eating 2 oz servings at a time, you have cut your protein down to 7.5 g per serving. I've added Isopure to almost everything I eat and I do 5g Isopure per 2 oz food which adds another 4g protein. 3) It's extremely difficult to get your 64 oz of water in. Pre-surgery I was like "that will be easy." Nope. Not at all. First, your new pouch will only hold a sip or two at a time. Too much and it will hurt. And once you are eating full liquids or purees, you have to stop drinking 30 min before, 30 minutes after (and another 10/15/20 to actually eat your food) and if you are eating 3-5x a day...this becomes a full time job. I know it will get easier, but it has been overwhelming right now.

When you don't want to eat a meal, how about trying a tiny pack of jerky, or simply a protein yogurt. This is what I do. That way I get to my protein goal. You need to kick start your appetite -
Diet right after surgery?
RickM replied to KaitlynAnne93's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ours was much the same as in the hospital, after getting through the leak test. Generally soft and sloppy but fairly varied - soups, strained of any chunks at first, yogurt, eggs, oatmeal, cream of wheat, chicken or tuna salad, flaky fish, protein drinks, of course, as that is a major protein source for a while. We could go back and forth between liquids and soft stuff as we could tolerate, some could progress a bit quicker than others and that was expected, Then most anything else added in after a month. -
Diet right after surgery?

I was discharged on Thursday morning; RNY was Tuesday morning. Thursday (post op day 2): 1 fl oz clear liquid every 15 minutes Friday-Sunday (post op days 3, 4, 5): (3) portions of 2oz full liquids per day + 64 oz water daily My full liquids have been: Fairlife Chocolate Protein Shake + Isopure powder SF Vanilla Pudding made with Fairlife Vanilla Protein Shake + Isopure powder Oikos Pro Greek Yogurt thinned with Fairlife Vanilla Protein Shake + Isopure powder Since the 2 oz portions are so small and I'm only eating 3x daily, I haven't even made a dent in these. Hope this helps! -

Hi, I recently got the gastric sleeve this past Monday. The night in the hospital I was allowed ice chips. The following day I had beef broth and sugar free jello and sugar free crystal light. Once I was home it was clear broths and sugar free Gatorade for the first three days. I am now able to have Greek yogurt’s and protein shake and cream soup. -
Yes! Same with the fantasies about greek yogurt! I had a dream last night I was eating Malt-o-meal. I haven't had that since I was a kid.
-
Yes, water logged is the feeling! Today I did a Vitamin Water Zero in Lemonade and it just didn't seem to want to go down. I'm doing Powerade Zero Fruit Punch now and it's much easier. How weird is that? I was so happy to have my IV out at the hospital but now I'm like "I want the IV back!!" My nutritionist said adding protein to the liquid foods (pudding, yogurt, skim milk) was fine, but for now she didn't want me to add any to my water, so no protein waters. She said eventually I could do that, but not within the first couple weeks because anything with added protein is technically a food and your body metabolically processes foods differently than water. She said to focus on hitting the water goal over any other food goal for the first couple of weeks. There is no way to reach my protein goal when I'm only consuming (3) 2oz portions of liquid food per day.

I meant to post this here…Tomorrow is two weeks post op. Feeling good. Much more energy. Walked a mile and a half with the fam earlier and didn’t need a break, which two weeks ago wouldn’t have happened. Tried puréed egg salad today and seems to be sitting well. My biggest thing is remembering to eat slow. Last night I did my yogurt dinner too fast and it was not pleasant. 🥹 Hubby is getting sleeved 8/26. Lots of changes in our home!!!
