  1. RJ'S/beginning

    leaks

I doubt very many people are at risk for leaks or any other complication. But me I started having difficulties from the get go.....I was the luck of the draw I think. It has nothing to do with my surgeon. Or my team..They have been there with me through it all...I thank god for them.... I was his first patient to ever go through anything like this...And from what I gather his last so far.....This has cost me dearly..But it could have cost me my life if I kept on the path I was on. So I view my team as miracle workers...And love them all to death...... If you are doing what you are supposed to do and have few complications I think you will not have to worry....Unless you abuse your sleeve by over eating or grazing constantly........

I think this was meant for RJ. I have been blessed with no complications.

    Gastric By Pass Vs Sleeve

too many long term complications with the bypass. I work as a nurse in an large urban emergency room and see ALL the complications... from erosion of the esophagus from the lapband and slippage to intestinal blockages and ended up with the colostomy bag with the bypass. I have only seen ONE complication (except dehydration) from the sleeve which was a post surgical abscess. Hands down the sleeve was for me !!!
  4. Funny how my story is the same as yours! In August 2006 I had the first stage of the DS. I realized I didn't need or want the switch once I began losing and the more I read of complications from the DS. I have no regrets! I went from 316 lbs to 167 lbs; no longer diabetic; no sleep apnea; no spinal stenosis pain that kept me a prisoner in my home....I can walk, and stand without pain! Congratulations on all you have accomplished! I believe we are both very fortunate that we did not have the DS. Linda
  5. I am about 2 weeks post-op and I have to wait til I am 10 weeks post-op for my first fill. I haven't had any complications that is just my doctor's protocol.
  6. LOL Thanks all...yup just lazy Oh and then there was the almost dead thing in the hospital thing and two surgeries...but Lazy is so much easier to go with OP, I was just making fun of myself to make you feel better about hanging out at home for a couple of weeks. I had serious complications and a second surgery hence the 58 days...(half of that was in hospital). Don't rush it If you push too hard you could end up where I was. A couple of weeks rest after major surgery isn't a luxury, nor is it lazy It's a good idea so that things heal properly. You will also be on a weight lifting restriction, so things like the grocery shopping should be done with someone else to carry bags, or by someone else. My mom might still be available
  7. For all the Mexico sleevers out there I have a question! If you have or have had a complication when you got home did your insurance cover it? Did you buy complication insurance? If so, did you use it? How did you approach your PCP about having this surgery abroad? Thank you in advance for your comments!
  8. Does anyone indeed do tae bo and if so, have you experienced any complications after doing so?!? Is it safe. Please let me know. Thanks!
  9. Hi, I'm new here. I decided to be banded after a life of being heavy. I'm at a BMI of 30 now. Any other Canadians here? I'll be paying about $18K for it and it's not covered by insurance I think. Did anyone have it done elsewhere and are happy with the results. I see ads for bands being installed for $4K... Not sure which country this is done in My DH is freaking out and is scared that there may be really bad complications.
  10. Seeing the doctor is not an option right now? Well, frankly, if that was going to be the case you should never have been banded. The band relies HEAVILY on good aftercare. You sound too tight and a trip to the doctor to remove some fill may make all this go away. Then again, you may indeed be right, it may be more than restriction levels and you may have some other problem. How in the world are you going to solve it without seeing your doctor? That is just completely nuts, you HAVE to go. These complications are just nowhere near as common here, where our medical system facilitiates compliance with aftercare. It costs nothign to go and see my doctor, and he's only a half hour drive a few suburbs away.

    Today Is The Big Day

Hello all, I am about to go to the hospital to get my band removed and be sleeved..I am so nervous of how this sleeve is going to be compared to the band..I've had my band since November of 2008 and it's been a rough road with complications.. band sucked no doubt! I lost 25 lbs on my optifast diet in tell weeks...I've learnt a lot while on my liquid diet about myself and how society views and uses food over the past 2 weeks while on my diet...well wish me luck! -Ryan
  12. Hi everyone! I had lap band November 2011. This worked well for a while. I lost about 80 pounds, until I had complication Nov 2014. I had problems with vomiting everything I would eat, so my previous surgeon ordered an upper GI and esophageal manometry. Both of those tests confirmed I had a prolapse. Long story short, my insurance company made me switch to a different surgeon. I had my band and port removed 8/10/15. My new surgeon said that my band had also slipped and was sitting sideways which was causing me to have the vomiting. He also did an intra-op EGD to look at my esophagus to see if there was any damage from 9 months of vomiting. He said it didn't look too bad,but I needed to continue my Zantac and Prilosec. He said he had to remove the adhesions(scar tissue) from the band. I am not going to lie, the port removal and scar tissue removal is painful! It was supposed to be an outpatient procedure and go home same day, but I ended up staying the night in the hospital due to pain control and I am really glad I did. IV Dilaudid was the only thing that was helping my pain. They eventually switched me to percocets and that seemed to help with the pain. I am attaching a picture of the port site. I am now 4 days post-op band and port removal and I am still taking percocets for pain, but it is improving. I will be revising to Gastric bypass in late October, early November based on my surgeon's recommendations and my history of GERD. My insurance company wouldn't allow me to have the revision done in 1 surgery, so it has to be done this way. I am interested in hearing from those who have had band to bypass and what their experiences were. There were 3 total incisions. 2 small ones which don't bother me at all, and one large painful incision where port was. This larger incision is the mean monster.

Just got my date -- now the surgery fears...

Thank you guys!! I can't even express how much I appreciate the support!! I definitely have that "alone" feeling, even though I've told a bunch of people. There's just no substitute for people who are going through the same thing! My biggest challenge at this point is the anxiety, which is actually great progress. I feel very confident and excited about "working the sleeve" and I'm ready to tackle all that head-on. I just need to keep working on my anxiety around the surgery itself (and post-op healing so I don't have complications). Acupuncture, hypno, mindfulness meditation... I'll get there. I'll get there! :-) Thank you again!
  14. Got the answer today from my insurance company. If there are complications with my band that deem my revision surgically or medically necessary, there will be no waiting period. Otherwise, 6 months Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App
  15. Thank you Patti & Charlotte, When I think of my aunts, who were so much fun, and most died of complications of diabetes, it makes me know I am doing the right thing. It is so hot here, I wat to walk , but I will go to the pool instead and exercise. no time like the present. Patti

    Medical Bills for Complicstions

So sorry you've had to go through this. Does your insurance cover WLS? If so it may cover complications. If not you may be SOL. My policy specifically states it will not cover WLS or any complications from WLS unless it is a an immediate life saving procedure. I went into it knowing any complications would bankrupt me for sure. No one but your insurance company will be able to answer your question because policies are so individual. BTW, what were your complications? What kind of prognosis are they giving you?
  17. Hello All, I have been considering lap band surgery since Nov. 2011. I met with a the surgeon's nurse practitioner and she was great! Answered many of my questions and was not pushy in my process. I attempted to lose weight on my own (again), but just seem to gain. I have insulin resistance and high cholesterol. I am 23, work full time as a paramedic and on call firefighter. I have become so discouraged, it seems I just keep gaining. I figure I now need to lose about 105lbs to be at a healthy weight ( I can't remember when I was at a healthy weight, but I have never been this big before) I am glad I found this forum, as I have read quite a few threads and I feel like I can get answers from people who have had the surgery. A few of my questions that I forgot to ask the nurse practitioner: Is 23 too young for this surgery? I have not had any children. Has anyone here had the surgery and then become pregnant? Does it increase any complications with pregnancy with having the surgery? I know the lap band won't take away emotional eating (something I have a problem with), but does it help to stop thinking about food? While I don't think I drink excessively for someone my age, I do enjoy going out and having drinks every now and then. How does the surgery affect consuming alcohol? Not that I would be embarrassed about having the surgery, I would like to keep it quiet. Is this the wrong attitude to have going into it? I am not sure how having the surgery and getting back to full time work as I do alot of heavy lifting and strenuous activity. I hope this isn't too many questions! I just want to feel confident and pretty again, I guess I just worry that this surgery won't work as I have decreased my calorie intake and I still seem to be gaining. Thanks so much for answers and advice!!! Kaylee
  18. Hi Everyone, I had my GVS surgery on June 13, and all went well. I remember laying in bed waiting for surgery, and the next thing I remember is waking up in my room with it all done. I had a mild cramping in my chest, but it went away as soon as the nurses gave me meds. I remember walking down the hall soon after I woke up to insure that gas wouldn't get the best of me. The nurses kept me comfortable and gave me meds on a schedule. I also had a medicine ball for incisional pain. I never felt any incisional pain whatsoever. I walked the halls a few time the next day. I didn't have any complications at all. They wanted to let me go home on the second day, but I said that I wanted to stay one more night. It was included in the package deal, and I felt more comfortable sticking around a little longer. Today is my first day at home post op, and I have been comfortable here as well. I cleaned up the kitchen, walked a little outside, washed a load of clothes, and Sip, Sip Sipped all day... I did my Clear liquids and no problems. I didnt do everything at once, just a little at a time as I felt that I could do. I feel very blessed and very happy and to me, this experience was a cake walk... I realize everyone's experience is different, so I don't want to downplay the realities of others. My prayers are with you all that have suffered and had complications. A couple of weeks before surgery all the way to surgery date, I made sure to exercise by doing weight resistance, and aerobic activity. Not sure if it helped, but I figure getting the blood flowing in the body couldn't hurt. I feel so happy that this is done and over with, and now, I can watch myself deflate. I can't wait...
  19. Welcome Nana! Don't be too afraid. The band is a wonderful tool, but it's still life ever-after. Some folks have some minor complications, setbacks, etc, but most are able to move through those and do what they set out to do which is re-gain their lives with better health, etc. Good luck to you!

I Need Someone To Hold My Hand

I completely agree with ShouldBlittler. When I made the decision to move forward with this, I weighed the small possibility of a surgical complication against the much greater risk of what will happen to me and my health if I continued down my current path. After that (and these forums and amazing community), it was a no-brainer. Now I only have two and half weeks to go!!!! Yes I'm nervous/anxious. But mostly I'm excited to become a better, healthier me. Nicci, my advice is use this community as your virtual hands to hold... you will not be disappointed with the response! Good luck!
  21. Anyone have their sleeve done Thursday the 29th? I keep reading about how people aren't doing well, not being able to swallow, and all other complications. I on the other hand have been feeling really good! I'm 23yrs old so maybe I was thinking because if my age but I've been of pain mess since the night I stayed in the hospital and I've been able to drink water very well. I feel like Ive been sipping in too much broth for only being 5days out, is this normal for anyone else?
  22. Hi all! I was banded back in May and am doing great! I'm just having some trouble with some carbs, i.e. baked goods, candy, etc... Once I start, I can't stop! I can go a good while without indulging, but once it happens, WHAM!! The tornado has struck!! The weird thing is, plain bread, rice, juice & sugary drink I'm ok with, and have no trouble having a bit or not having any! It's really weird! I'm afraid the lack of control might eventually lead to streching out the pouch/ causing complications if I'm not careful! Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Any advice, insight or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    newly banded

Ok first, don't EVER let a friend or anyone who isn't qualified try to give you a fill. You're just begging for some major complications messing with that. If you're throwing up daily, you don't need a fill, you need to have your band checked. You shouldn't be vomiting with the band. You need to make sure it's not too tight or slipped. Can you have one of the other doctors you found locally check the band position for you? If you can't, you might have to go back to the surgeon who placed the band to have him check it. One way or another, you need it checked by a qualified surgeon immediately because vomiting daily is very bad. Good luck.
  24. I hung out on lapband and bypass forums, reading what kinds of problems and victories people were having. And I choose the band. There were too many serious stories of bypass problems, including deaths. Too many things I just didn't want to risk living with. And too many bypass patients re-gaining their weight and not knowing what to do. Yes, there can be complications with the band. And for many, the weightloss is slower at first, but studies are showing that 5 years out, it's about equal. And I think the banders are much healthier.
  25. PS Apparently Blis covers first time surgery but not revisions. I could understand if I hadn't been successful with the band but I did well with the weight loss. They site the chances of stricture as high with the sleeve, but that would be for any sleeve right not just revisions from banding? Does anyone have figures on complication rates?
