Embrace the Stall
cindi gant replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
In 23 months I have had too many stalls to count. I did not have the 3 week stall. It seems like my first stall was at about 3 months. Not sure though. I have probably had 10 stalls or more. Some were longer than others. The sleeve was a revision so I know how this goes. I have not had many surprises. When you have a stall try the usual things, drink more water, increase your protein, exercise more, reduce your calories by 100 - 150 or maybe add 100 - 150 calories for a week or so. These things may or may mot help. Bottom line, trust the process. Don"t worry. Depending on when your surgery was, call your doctor if the stall lasts more than a month. You have to be comfortable with what your body is doing. You may not be losing pounds but you are probably losing inches. -
The infamous 3 week stall. It will pass. Look it from your body's point of view. Major surgery, still healing, and wacked out caloric intake changes. It's going to put the brakes on things until it figures out what is going on and adjusts. Keep with your program. It will be fine. I just broke my 3 week stall.

Embrace the Stall
Mania replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Quick question. I had my VSG surgery 10 days ago. Before I started my 2 week liquid diet, I weighed 372.8 lbs. On this past Thursday I weighed 335.8. So that a loss of 37 lbs in roughly 3 weeks. I think I am now stalled because I have not lost any weight since Thursday (was seeing a 2-3 lbs a day after surgery.). Can this be my 3 week stall? -
When are the "typical" stalls?
Kindle replied to LivingLight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Stalls happen anytime, anyplace and last for any length of time. Other than the infamous 3 week stall I don't think there is a pattern. And, BTW, a loss of 1.4 pounds is not a stall. The fact that you are measuring tenths of a pound suggests to me up you are too obsessed with the numbers. Relax, enjoy the journey, count your NSV's, explore some new recipe ideas and stay off scale for awhile. I guarantee you will keep losing if you are eating on plan. -
Weight loss wall! Any advice?
Yaberhoo replied to rescue4_u's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@net0girl are you meeting your Water and Protein goals every day? Are you taking your Vitamins? Are you keeping your carb count down? Have you started your monthly? Have you started exercising (which can lead to a gain due to muscle gain)? Are you retaining water (watch your salt intake)? Are you taking measurements rather than relying on your scale? You are due to hit the famous 3 week stall. How much did you lose pre op? Read the thread "Embrace the Stall" and it can give you an explanation of what is happening. Stalls can be a good thing if you have stalled while doing everything right. The body needs to stop and reevaluate itself after weight loss. -
I Am Thankful For My Stall
Yaberhoo replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think I just broke the dreaded 3 week stall today. I didn't sweat it during week and a half of so that I was on it because I knew it was coming. I am grateful for it because I can currently take off my jeans without unbuttoning them! It was definitely my body reevaluating and repairing itself. Look, considering the limitations to the amount of food I can shovel into my maw, the fact that I am making good food choices of what DOES enter my maw, and the calorie count needed to maintain my current weight, there is NO WAY I can do anything but lose weight. A plateau in the actual weight loss is no biggie. It will come off. In order to maintain my current weight I would need to eat upwards of 3,000 calories a day. That is simply not possible when you focus on your Protein and Water goals. Embrace the stall! -
Weight loss wall! Any advice?
Yaberhoo replied to rescue4_u's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I just broke my 3 week stall today. Weight loss isn't a linear process. You will lose and stall. Embrace the stall! It means that your body is recovering and readjusting to the weight loss. Mine lasted at least a week and a half. Stay off the scale, take measurements if you need that positive reinforcement. Make sure you are getting your target Protein and Water levels and relax. It will start again! I lost 42 lbs during preop and since surgery. It was time for my body to put the brakes on and reevaluate itself. You tend to lose inches rather than pounds during this time. -
Weight loss wall! Any advice?

Yep it's the dreaded 3 week stall. You aren't doing anything wrong. Your body is just adjusting to all the new changes. Continue meeting your Protein and Fluid goals. Try to get in some regular exercise. If the scale is making you crazy, put it away. -
Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery
feedyoureye replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stalls are normal for most people. Stay on track and the scales will move again. 3 weeks is not a deal breaker.... I had several 3 week stalls. Drink your water, keep moving, protein first.... -
I love quest bars and I eat one every day. I count the net carbs and the nutritionist agreed on handling it this way. It's on my program's list of approved protein bars. I've been eating them for over four months now. I had surgery six and 1/2 months ago and I have never had a stall, not even the dreaded 3 week stall. I think I'm like the tortoise and not the hare - slow and steady is my race.

My weight loss has been slow, too. In fact, I had a 3 week stall only one week after surgery. My NUT told me that people lose at different rates. Some people's insides take longer to heal than others. Sometimes it takes longer for some people to get over the shock of the surgery to their bodies. It is important not to compare your weight loss to others. Each journey will be different. The important thing to concentrate on is getting in your liquids and Protein and to exercise as much as you are able. The weight loss may be slower at first, but will eventually move right along. It is hard to get everything in at first, but is so important to the healing process. I was getting in 60 grams of protein each day; my NUT wants me to try to get in around 75. It is hard when we have waited so long for this tool. It is hard when we see others report great weight loss in the first month or so after surgery. Nevertheless, each journey is as different as each person taking it. The tool has proved itself to be useful and reliable. Hang in there! And if you need to step away from the scale for a bit - do so. Good luck on your journey!

whenever I have a good wt. loss I seem to stall a week as my body catches up. the 3 week stall was the worse. but I kept doing what I was doing knowing I was eating correctly and than the stall broke and I had a nice wt. loss. my doctor reminds me that if I have a stall for any length of time to look for hidden calories that I might be eating and not counting it enough. like in serving sizes etc. just remember basics and you will be fine

I am 3 weeks post op and have lost roughly 17lbs since day of surgery. I haven't lost anything this week and am just hearing about the 3 week stall. But I think u are on the right track with lbs lost although I know everyone is different.

@@thbrown223 I had the infamous 3 week stall that lasted 2 weeks and then again at 3 months. I have had so many that I cannot even count. The longest one was at 8 months and lasted 5 weeks. When I say a stall, I mean NO weight lost at all during that period of time. If I lost a pound it was not a stall. There are also times when you will lose a pound then gain it back then lose it again. It is simply part of the process that we go through. During that 5 week stall I actually had to stay off the scale because it actually frustrated me. Normally I don't let the scale dictate how I feel but that time I will admit I was very frustrated. Then all of a sudden wham I will drop weight again. I stall out now after I drop 10lbs. Then I go back and forth and it all begins again.

@@395Ron it is so great to hear from you! I am so happy that you are progressing. You had so many people pulling for you. Thank you wife for keeping us updated. I too was told only walking. I am still having pain in my stomach near large incision and bruising so honestly I don't even want to attempt working out. I don't go back to Drs until 12/2. I am still on mushie food and honestly feel like I can eat more than a quarter cup. I am in the 3 week stall too. I am down 25 lbs, 14lbs of hat since surgery. I still a, dealing with the fear of failure. I am hoping for at least an average of 2.5lbs a week which I think is not over the top! -
Sounds like the famous "3 week stall"... Yes, I can see that you're not exactly 3 weeks out but you're pretty close... There are plenty of posts and articles around with information on this... I think there's one titled "Embrace the Stall" or something similar... Maybe that has some information you can use... Physical therapy may re-start things for you too...

Ellie, Congrats on the successful surgery! Also, it sounds like you have a good handle and attitude about recovery. I am sorry to hear about your throat. That must really hurt, but I guess since your just on liquids now it has a real chance to heal. Still would have been nice for the anesthesiologist to get it right given how much one seems to cost. ???? Keep up the great attitude! Remember there is a good likelihood for that 3 week stall. Just know that you have got this and the weight will start really coming off after your body has some time to heal. It's a marathon not a sprint, but you seem to have a great game plan for success. ????????

I'm on a 3 week stall right now. I just keep at it and I know the weight will come off. It's hard at times because the negative thoughts come in and I keep thinking... I am only going to lose this much... or after all the money I spent I only lost 40lbs... or even what am I doing wrong... I know how the thought process goes... the weight will come off. Just be patient and don't drive yourself crazy

Thank you! I really hope I am but trying not to get my hopes up. Just broke a 3 week stall so trying to stay positive. It is a great feeling! So good every week I fear the scale stopping. -
It seems like where I come to break a zero, I stall for about 2 weeks and stay at that damn zero. Then boom!! Same happened to me at 3 weeks. Stalls happen constantly so it's normal.
-
I'm sorry you are feeling this way. You are only a month out though. It does get better. I have not ever had any regrets, but definitely frustrations. I've had a 3 week stall every month since my 2nd month. I am just over 6 months out and still only eat about 650 to 850 calories a day. I work out religiously at least 5 days a week. Surgery is a tool and there are many resources that can help in this journey. My surgeon, his staff, and my nutritionist have been amazing. I promise it gets better!

How about calling it "The Top 50 from Vets to you... with a bow on it" or "VAQs" Veterans Answer Questions My personal fav is "I am 2 1/2 weeks out and have stopped losing weight!".... followed by the 3 week stall talk. Prefaced by the admonishment of "Listen to your Doc and Nut" of course.
