    What is the Norm?

And you're making your own kind of music , marching on your own trail toward your goal weight. I could tell you how much I have lost since my surgery on September 5th, and you might sniff a little, say that's not fair! But if you see any of my other posting where I say the amount, keep in mind. I am not uncomplicated a path, I am losing so much because I have a stoma stricture, no purees or solids get through, once that gets fixed my precipitous weight descent will level out and I'll be more realistic. Don't woryy, that's your surgeon and bariatric teams problem, let them guide you, they know your case better than we do. We will cheer with you when you reach your goals, promise!😛
  2. Alex ... from the article " Whether rapid versus slow uptake of amino acids are better for protein gain among bariatric patients have not been explored." There was absolutely nothing in that article that supports the claim that casein is inappropriate for RNY patients.
  3. Please do more research. You’re very mistaken. See http://bariatrictimes.com/protein-and-the-bariatric-patient-supplemental-protein-or-amino-acids/ . Google a little and you’ll find MANY studies showing that WPI is definitely the way to go for patients that have malabsorptive procedures.
  4. Hello My Friends 💜 I had Gastric Bypass in July. So far I am doing pretty well, feeling great, I have my three month check-up with my surgeon the end of the month! But today I wanted to talk more about something else I am a thyroid cancer survivor, I was diagnosed, had my thyroid removed and did radiation in 2012. Every year my oncologist alternates between doing a chest x-ray or a Thyroid uptake scan to check that the cancer is not back. I am due for a Thyroid uptake scan soon. I WILL be talking with my surgeon at my appointment about it. But was curious if any of you wonderful people were also Thyroid Cancer survivors or have done a thyroid uptake scan post-op. My main concern is that while the dose of radiation you take for an uptake scan is not as high as when you are doing actual radiation I will still be swallowing a radioactive pill, which they request/suggest you take with a full glass of water all at once. I know I can not drink that much water all at once, but I am also concerned that if I am discouraged to consume caffeine for six months post-op (which is what my program suggests I know not all of them do) that consuming actual radioactive materials is probably not advisable either. Anyone here who does Radioactive Thyroid Uptake Scans? Any suggestions on how long you waited post-op? Again I will talk with my doctor's both my Bariatric Surgeon and my Oncologist about my concerns and imagine that I will just be pushing the Uptake scan out at least a year post-op but I am just checking to see what other peoples experiences were...

    Food Before and After Photos

Airplane food .... Halibut on some spinach pasta (Halibut was delicious! Totally shocking, lol!) I swear I know this is a Bariatric food forum, not Flyertalk . But when traveling, I rarely eat alone except at the airport or on the plane. Not like I can really take pics at a business dinner. And at home I only serve what I know I can eat, so I have no after pics.
  7. A big HUG from ME, I may now remember so well, had to wear a pad on top of tampons to stem the flow, my GYn used to say " Its washing YOU clean!" yeah but who asks foe a tsunami in your underwear? And the rotten so and-so refused me a hysterectomy. An sidebar, years later the 1st Bariatric Surgeon I consulted Could Not Believe I had not had a hysterectomy. Keep saying to the future young surgeon he was training "I cannot believe she is Gynecologically Intact! " Since when has that been a precursor to Bariatric Surgery? He was a strange strange bird, glad I escaped his birdcage lair and found a better(dare I say ? More skillful Surgeon) our personalities did not mesh well.

    Anyone regretting this?

Had 2 bags on the 1st while I fell after tripping, slipping or parsing out, son feels the first, I'm thinking the last because I don't remember tripping, bruised up my knee, the one that was first replaced, bruised my belly and tore my right arm open, a long skin tear, this week it's good enough to go without a dressing. So I am getting patched up, and someone passed along I was status post an RnY, now my local hospital is only a community one, so like a purple spotted giraffe EVERYBODY had to come see the strange animal. I had to end up doing a tutorial, a few had seen lao-band, a few had VSG patients but a bono fide Bypasser? Nope, never ever! I'm told my "BandAid Station" is adding Bariatrics 2019 or early 2920, they do have a new accredited and experienced in place, just doing general surgery at this point. But like Sgt Schultz from Hogan's Heroes," They Know nothing, They see Nothing" Finally I got enough fluid in that I could void, this pleased them and I was free to leave! Since then, although Dr Noria, my surgeon's partner that ❤doing endoscopies, told me not to be concerned about counts until my stricture is alleviated, I have endevored to be Q.S, on fluids and proteins , not easy on a restricted liquid diet , This morning my protein shake isvrepulsing me so I will heat up bone broth, good for me but I will need something else within 2 hours, never "sticks" with me. Oh I do yearn for purees and soft solids, just pho, euntil I am repaired, it All Comes Back Up and faster than I swallowed it.💦💦Anyone want to come to my Pity Party? Only passing out Regrets Today.

    Anyone try Baritrack Vitamins

I started with Wal-Mart Equate Multi, pretty nasty even stirred in applesauce. Now I have BariMelts from Bariatric Pal store, pretty okay, appreciate not having to grind them up because of dentures, but mostly use my prenatal vitamins, pill is small enough to easy swallow and I appreciate only having to take 1 daily. Works out with all the other meds and pills, still using my liquid calcium citrate, glorious no having to chew something into submission.😛🏡

You don't need WLS just go on a diet!

I opted to tell exactly 4 people.... My mom, BF, Boss and best friend prior to surgery. I didn't want people knowing why I was out of the office (I only took a week off) and I didn't want snide comments. But what I've learned throughout this entire process is no one knows what you've been through, the struggles you've hit through weight loss, diets dietitians, etc. When I put on my final 50lbs and struggled for years to get it off, through pills, shots, seeing a registered dietitian and trying nearly ever fad diet in between, I decided to check out WLS as a last resort for me. When under the guidance of bariatric dietitian and still failing to lose weight at a normal pace (2lbs per week) - I finally agreed to the WLS. But what I learned about my body in those final 8 months before surgery is priceless. I also believe it set me up for success moving into WLS and the months following. I still haven't told anyone that I've had WLS, it's no one's business but my own. If people are "watching" me, they will see my diet has changed dramatically (not only portions) but what I actually put into my mouth. So it all plays a vital role in our success.

I have not. I use the Bariatric Pal Chewables and just upgraded myself to the daily capsules.

    Following surgery with Weight Watchers

Dear Lovin2lose I’m 4 months post op, down 30 lbs. i joined weight watchers at one month post op mainly for the accountability. The free points program is working for my friends but my Nurse Practitioner told me that WW is not good for anyone having Bariatric Surgery. The plan actually requires you to eat much more than you’re supposed to any time after surgery. I ended up leaving because I was spending a lot of money to get weighed every week but not really following the program. Really not learning anything new & then they changed the program after I was in for 3 months! Though I know it works for some people, it seems that at least 99% of the people in any of the WW groups I have joined over the years have reached goal & then gained all of the weight back - and then some. I really liked the leader but weight watchers is a HUGE profit making industry that is very expensive as are all of their foods, snacks, gadgets, etc. And constantly changing the program costs people even more! NP told me to follow the plan given by the nutritionist - 3 meals, no in between, and 1/2 a protein shake if I get hungry in between. She actually said, at 3 months post op, that I should still be eating with the small cups - 3 ounces of food. I haven’t done that in weeks and it seemed crazy to me mostly because I seem to be able to eat pretty much anything I want. I do have problems with bread types of food like bagels, pizza crust, rice, etc. They seem to expand in my throat- probably not chewing enough. So, bottom line for me is WW is useless for Bariatric Surgery people. That said, I would be remiss in not mentioning that I am in big trouble because I feel myself slipping back into my old bad habits & addictions again. Life has been extremely stressful since the surgery but I know I can’t use that as an excuse. I think I should have had brain surgery instead of sleeve surgery! I started out so great but never dealt with the emotional, mental, & habitual reasons I’ve always eaten the way I do. I am so disappointed in myself & so angry that I went through all of this surgery only to lose 30 pounds. I don’t regret the surgery & I guess I should be happy because I haven’t lost weight in years but reality is that I needed to lose at least 100 to get to a healthy, non obese weight. I am losing hope.😞

    October 2018 Sleevers

My surgery isn't until October 29 so I will be behind a lot of you in terms of what stage I'm in but I am on day 3 of my liquid diet and have decided I needed to reach out to a community/forum of people who know what I am going through. I've been dealing with family and friends not agreeing with my choice to have the sleeve done (or any bariatric surgery for that matter) and I thought I was going to be fine but after spending an hour crying in the shower today out of hunger and frustration, I realize I am going to need all the advice I can get. It's been helpful to read some of the past posts and know I'm not alone. It's a start...
  15. Another good one to talk to would be Dr. Ara Keshishian in Glendale. If you need a revision, he would most likely go for a DS rather than a bypass as that is more his specialty. But since the DS uses the sleeve as its basis, that means that he has been doing them a lot longer than most bariatric surgeons, so if there is something wrong with your sleeve, he would be the one to be able to fix it rather than revise it to something else. By your description, it sounds like your sleeve may not have really been done correctly, so a correction rather than a revision may well be the answer. Typically, a revision from the sleeve to the bypass doesn't do a lot to correct a poor weight loss problem as the sleeve and bypass are so similar in their metabolic strength; if one really needs a stronger solution, the DS is the way to go, but it sounds like a simple resleeve may the the answer for you. Good luck,
  16. Hi All, I have the Sleeve about 16 months ago and had an overall good result, lost about 55% of my excess weight. I was pretty surprised though that I really never had much feeling of restriction after the surgery, never got sick, never felt overly stuffed, and my hunger only decreased moderately. I kinda felt like most of my weight loss was really attributable to the lifestyle changes I made associated with the surgery, although it definitely helped some. I recently was diagnosed with an inflammatory spine disease for which the only real treatment is aggressive weight loss and moderation of inflammation. I'm considering having a revision of the sleeve or conversion to a bypass and would really like to find someone great in the Los Angeles area. My previous surgeon was fine operatively but didn't really listen to me and I'd be hesitant to discuss my current situation in that setting as this feels like a really big decision given my recent diagnoses. I'm considering Dr. Feiz and Dr. Dorwaiswamy. Any other great people I should consider who are great surgeons but also willing to spend a minute listening to concerns?
  17. My boys were 7 and 6 when I had my surgery in April this year. Last year my husband had to have emergency quadruple bypass which terrified them when they were able to see him and he was in the hospital right at a week. I sat them down before going to the bariatric doctor and told them what I was trying to do. they told me I didn't need to because I was pretty the way I was. I had co morbidities and I needed it for my health. I told them that I was trying to do what I can to be a healthy mom. they also know I'm in recovery for drugs and alcohol and they know what my AA book is and I told them momma is trying to be a healthy mom both from bad things like germs and things I can control so I can be with them as long as possible. I was in the hospital for my wls for about 4 days and they stayed at their grandmothers house for a few days and then my hubby went and got them to see me and see I was ok in the hospital and being taken care of. They also were told because I was going to be sore and walking around uncomfortable for a little bit. They were my big little helpers when I came home. Now, since I've talked with them like miniature grown ups (on their level) they actually look at calories and ask me if I can have certain foods. They are a huge part of my journey because they have motivated me to be the best me.
  18. Yeah mine tries to tell me 294, a lot of Bariatric Pals start out at that weight BEFORE surgery. Why are you celebrating? But to someone who was once 355 that seems SO VERY FINE. I think it goes back to childhood, in my case I was told not to be "falsely proud" now I wonder if I deserve such happiness? But Mama and my family meant well, they were at a loss to grow up a Frustr8, SO. they punted a lot!

  20. This thread is for anyone who has had complications after any type of bariatric surgery. I think most hope and experience a good outcome from surgery but, we also know the risks going into this. Any first hand experiences would be appreciated. What type of surgery did you have? What is your medical complication(s) that you are diagnosed with? What are your treatment options and what did you choose. Any medical referrals or resources in your area that you would recommend? your experience/story if you feel comfortable sharing
  21. There is a lot of variation in post op diets across all bariatric surgeries. I recommend you follow your surgeon’s plan as s/he knows your health history and what works for her/his patients. When in doubt, call the office and discuss your concerns BEFORE going off plan. You don’t want to end up with a complication because you advanced your diet too soon. Good luck!

    Pound of cure

I am a big proponent of whole, healthy food post-WLS and my bariatric team supports this way of eating. I do NOT consume artificial sweeteners at all, am not a big meat eater, and I do not worry about eating fruit. I eat whatever amount of fruit I feel like, which is usually 1-3 servings a day, depending on what’s in season or in my kitchen. I don’t demonize any food except for fake food made with chemicals. This approach has worked very well for me; my yearly labs are fantastic, I feel wonderful, and my BMI is in the lower normal range. I also just returned from a beach vacation where I wore cute bikinis and was not self conscious about my body, even with some saggy skin. What I am consuming (veggies, fruit, dairy, beans, some meat) is working well for me. No dumping or RH episodes. YMMV
  23. I am pre-op and was given the Celebrate powdered vitamins to start taking. It tastes super gross, so when I am done my 30 days on this I want to switch. Unjury sells 90 day supplies for REALLY CHEAP, but I am confused about which I would need. They have Opurity Bypass and Sleeve Optimized and Opurity Complete Bariatric. What is the difference? I can't tell. Do you still need to supplement with iron or calcium?

    Tips for preparing for surgery

During my six month pre op weight loss. I wish I would have started using myfitnesspal and eating my bariatric real food stage plan. (Eating 60-100 grams protein and keeping my carbs low (no potato rice bread pasta) Carbs from fruits and veggies) It would have made my supervised weight loss much easier.

    Gas

I told my husband that quitting alcohol and drugs is much easier than eating right when all you know is unhealthy eating. I'm only 6 months post op, but I struggle daily, especially now my 8 year old is playing football. All those yummy horrible foods at the concession stand. I do good for 2-3 weeks, then I go on a week binge. I have lost 45 pounds but I know I should have almost lost to my goal weight. It can be discouraging. But you have all of us here on Bariatric pal.
