  1. I would sit down with a doctor to make your choice. That is what I did. I was not sure if I even wanted surgery when I first met with my weight-loss doctor. After a few meeting she factor in my age weight and needs and we decided on the sleeve. I went this option because it only messes with one organ not several. You also have less risks of malabsorption and complications. Most places offer seminars that are free and will talk about options and risks. Insurance may also come into play on what you can have as well.
  2. I am 21 years old and almost 500 pounds. My goal weight is to be 180 pounds one day. I plan on getting surgery soon but I am still trying to choose which one. Based on your experience what is your opinion on which surgery I should use. Give your reasons. Feel free to ask me for any additional information.

    Typical day on Preop diet???

I am getting banded next thurs too! I am allowed to eat cream of wheat, yogurt, milk, juice and sf carnation inst bfast for breakfast. Lunch is soup, milk, juice, sf pudding. Dinner is the same. I have snacks of either milk or yogurt in between. After dinner I have a protein shake or carnation inst bfast. I have to be on pre op diet for 2 wks. Thats nice you get to start yours later. I have been doing ok on it, been tired and muscles ache. It gets old, but its better than drinking shakes all day. Good luck! Hopefully you will find out what your diet consists of soon. I have lost about 7 lbs since on pre op diet in 1 wk. You lose weight, but can be exhausted.
  4. Hello all, My surgery date was January 6, and I am down 53 lbs. I can fit into some size 8 pants, but mostly 10s, and I am wearing a SMALL top! That makes me so happy. I still can't believe this is where I am. The weight loss has definitely slowed down but it is still coming off and that's what counts! Like someone else mentioned, I think it is interesting that we are all basically at the same amount lost after 5 months.
  5. WOW what a great weight loss!! I'm a month out too, but have only lost 6kgs (which is just over 13lbs) but I lost a fair bit before surgery so am actually about halfway to my goal. It fascinates me as well to see how things have changed - the volume of food I could pack in before surgery was pretty piggy really (well I didn't get overweight by having a delicate appetite!) and I'm so happy to be full on a small portion. One egg and I'm stuffed full...... from someone who could eat a 3 egg cheese and vege omelette and be lining up for toast as well! I've never been a fast loser, but at least it seems achievable now without feeling deprived and "on a diet" - roll on (or off!) the next 20kgs

    Stall

60lbs is awesome! I had surgery 1/28 and have lost 38lbs and I am very happy! I have not experienced the stalls and have consistantly lost 1 to 2 pounds per week but I have not had the big losses that others have. I am very happy with the slow weight loss and I think we should always be patient because each persons body will lose weight differently, just keep up the good work and you will get to your goal! Good Work!

    Optifast

First of all, I LOVE your name! It made me laugh!!! I did Optifast for 6 months about 2 years ago...lost 90 lbs on that stuff!! LOL! (All gained back of course and then some...thank goodness for the sleeve). Weird thing was that I did not like much of the solid stuff so I mainly did liquids. I got a hand blender and mixed the stuff with other things... Ex: chocolate or Vanilla with a cup of coffee (course now you should use decaf) and a touch of artificial sweetner like stevia. strawberry, I mixed with Diet orange soda (you won't be able to have soda after...so you could try crystal light flavors! YUM!) and some crushed ice. Delicious! I also used some of the International sugar free coffees to mix with Water and their flavors but not sure now if caffeinated or not?? You'd have to check, but together they were better than starbucks. I often used sugar free syrups to add to whatever I was mixing to change it up a bit. Hot vs. Iced etc too. I did NOT like the chicken soup...but the tomato...YUMMY!!!! I truly found Optifast was some of the tastiest diet stuff out there. AND I thought it was the easiest diet I was EVER on. 600 calories a day...no thinking about food choices. If only I could last on it forever....haha! The sleeve will help me keep my weight down though! Goodluck and I wish I still had some for my preop diet that is beginning again since my surgery delay. (PS. Tried Medifast and it was yucky to me in comparison.) Rooting for you!!! Joan

    70 lbs down progress pics

Thanks everyone! @@Nicey2u I haven't encountered a stall by definition, but there are times where I stay at the same weight for a week or so. Exercise always pushes me past it though.
  9. Anyone have a revision from sleeve to bypass? If so how much more weight did you lose? I have lost another 30 pounds to date and my surgeon told me I should only lose about 10.... Worried I might keep losing and get myself in trouble.

    WTF?!?!?!?! Really!?!?!?!

The same thing happened to me. I was almost at a comfortable level of feeling 'kind of' full- hoping that one more fill would do the trick, but my doctor wouldn't do it. When I went in to have my port repositioned he even took some saline out. The funny thing is I am losing more weight than I was when I my band was fuller. I guess my doctor knew what he was doing. hmmm... Trust your doctor.

    Bypass or sleeve ?

@@mckwestla I think it is a personal decision and each of us has our own reasons for our selection. For me it was the fact that long term data about the sleeve is showing almost as good total weight loss as the bypass, using a simpler procedure with less risk and less side effects (malabsorption, dumping syndrome, etc.) I also consulted with my surgeon and based on my weight, health and reasons behind my weight gain he agreed that the sleeve was the best option. If you haven't already, a good conversation with your surgeon should help you decide. I would ask about the residual effects of both procedures. For example, the sleeve removes about 75-80% of the stomach, including the fundus which is where ghrelin (hunger hormone) is generated. Thus, sleevers have relatively little actual hunger. The bypass does resect the stomach but leaves the old stomach, including most of the fundus in place. I think it would be worthwhile to know whether the same ghrelin reduction occurs in the bypass. Also, I've heard that the sleeve has, over time, less risk of stretching than the bypass pouch. I don't know this to be the case, just have heard it and it is worth asking about. Hopefully the surgeon you select can help you choose the best procedure for your needs.

    incorperating new foods

Every carb has the potential to be 'bad carb' unless it comes from certain fruits and legumes. Heavy starches such as bread and Pasta can cause weight loss to abate. Btw, I recommend that you use Ketostix to assure your body is in state of Ketosis at all times. Many folks who post here about stalls may actually have created the stall by consuming too many carbs, even if keeping calories in check. -RC-

New to Gainesville Florida, Need Fill Doctor

Hello fellow lapbanders. Just a warning. I had my lapband in for 5 years. Last January my port area started to become inflamed with a red area around it. It eventually looked like an half of an egg raised up. It was so painful. My Doctor finally did a scope down my throat and found that the lapband was growing right into my stomach. After a 4 1/2 hour surgery, they finally got it out. I was in the hospital 3 weeks. I ended up in ICU for 3 days. I almost died. I'm not saying don't do it. Just have your Dr. do a scope down your our throat every 6 months. It worked for me. I lost my weight in about 1 and 1/2 years. I'm at a comfortable weight now. I just think if you do not monitor the banding, our bodies will try to incorporate the band into our bodies. Good luck everyone.
  15. Hi everyone! My name is Sue and I live in Dublin, OH (near Columbus). I am very interested in finding out more about banding. I did attend a seminar in Columbus...with Dr. Meyer. I went in leaning more toward banding but they seem to be pushing more toward Bypass surgery which quite frankly scares me. I am the nervous type and although I know I need to do something to help get the weight off, I don't want to regret my decision either way I decide. I am very interested in finding out more about people's results and experiences in both banding and by pass to help me decide which way is best for me to go. I weigh 298 and would like to get down to 175 or so. I am 40 yrs. old and have a family history of health issues relating to weight that I know if I do not do something drastic soon, I too will fall into the family doom! Any info anyone can provide me to help me make my decision including the best doctors in my area, experiences after surgery etc. I would be very grateful. I am looking forward to reading blogs and making new friends here so let me get started. Thanks for reading! Sue:rolleyes2:

Can you stall with not getting enough calories and protein??

I joind the site WWW.fitday.com So i could log all my food so i could find how just how much i am getting in, well after logging my foods for breakfast and lunch, protein did not add up to much and the calories for the two meals was only 455 calories. Thats probably why i have not lost much weight, i don't think i am eating enough. can anybody tell me, if that plays a big part in stalling, if your not eating enough calories?? I will continue to work on the calories and the protein and just see if it makes a difference, i will blog my results.

    Passed psyc eval!

Mine was with my therapist. She wanted to know what I'd done before to lose weight, why I chose surgery, what support system I have in place, how does my family feel about my surgery, what changes I'm willing to make long-term, how I will deal with changes/people as they occur post-op, what I've been doing to deal with emotional eating and food addiction (which I've been working with her on for a few months) and basically how invested I am to following through and following up. Not sure if that's the standard eval, but that's my experience. Took a little less than an hour. see above

    First appt Mnday

My first appointment was mostly just informational. What to expect, what my insurance requirements were, etc. Then I had my first weigh-in and met with my nutritionist to make a plan on how I could start changing my diet and losing weight before the band. I had my first appointment on 6/15 and am scheduled for surgery in 10/22. I tried really hard (80-90%) of the time to follow the nutritionists plan and have lost 30lbs so far. Now hopefully the band will help me with the last 90-100! Lol
  20. I'm 7 months out and just look ridiculous with the amount of hair I've lost, my hairdresser even suggested I get a pixie crop last week and this may well be my only option. As I have an appointment on Monday with my surgeon I'm holding on to see whether I am missing something from my diet that may help. I discovered through research that I was not getting enough protein in me I need 100 grams to help me lose weight I'd be lucky if I was getting 20 grams so I have added protein shakes and so far today I have managed to get 64 grams of protein in. I also take zinc and biotin to strengthen the hair when it does grow. I know nothing I've told you will help with your hair loss but your not alone if that is of any comfort.

    Mood Swings?

I read that weight loss releases a lot of estrogen in your system. Your body stores estrogen in fat, so if you lose fat, the estrogen gets released and messes with your body (your cycle, moods etc). That definitely explains at least part of the mood swings. The other part is that you probably did some self-medicating with food, and you can't do that post-op, so all that anxiety gets bottled up with no release. In any case, definitely get some help!! I'm working with a therapist for that very reason (and because I want to resolve some stuff I've never dealt with over the years). Hang in there and know we're supporting you online!

    6 month diet, gained weight

I have Kaiser and they make you have a goal weight. If I came in the day of surgery even 1 lb. over my goal weight, they would cancel my surgery! They're pretty harsh. A girl in my last preop class was crying because they cancelled her surgery for being over her goal weight. They'd still do the surgery, but after you are at or below your goal weight, no exceptions.

    Weightloss on pre-op diet

rememeber to not weigh yourself too much. Weight fluctuates Sooooo much. First losses are often water weight, but fat weight loss is coming fersure...
  24. I simply called my insuarance company (BCBS of Alabama) and asked if the lap band was covered under my policy and the response I got was no. I didn't ask why or anything else as my heart dropped into my stomach and I didn't know what else to say but "ok". Could she have taken the question in terms of it being an elective thing? In other words, if my Dr. submitted it them stating health reasons, might I then be approved? I have not spoken to my Dr. about this surgery yet, I figured checking with the insurance company first was the best way to start, but maybe not. I did read on the banstersinsurance yahoo group in the database that BCBS of Alabama covered this surgery 100%.. was this just one persons experience? I am not sure what that list is really saying. I know that when I was considering gastric bypass last year I read in the Insurance coverage that 1 weight loss surgery would be covered and do not recall reading any exceptions to that. I will need to go back and dig that book out again. Do you think I would have a better chance get apporved through my Dr? Or is no basically NO and I would have to go through an appeal? Medically I think I am a candidate for this surgery. My BMI is 51, high blood pressure, father had heart attack at 50, his father died of heart attack at 60, 2 uncles on my moms side have had heart attacks and her parents have both had numerious heart bypasses. My mom, grandmother and uncle also have diabetes. Any insight on this would be great. Thanks ETA: I see in my policy under exclusions that it does not cover services for obesity. BUT in the same paragraph is goes on to say, "This exclusion does not apply to surgery for morbid obesity if medically necessary and in compliance with guidelines of the Claims Administrator." So maybe I answered my own question. I am just not sure who/what the Claims Administrator is and what the guidelines are.

    Band sizes??

Sultana, Even though I don't want to be a smart ass so early in the morning, I'm going to warn about this anyway, even though I know you know. Jessie Ahroni, the noted band guru, says there are only three adjustments we need to worry about: too loose, too tight and just right. I know that a lot of people--usually Americans, we're famous for it--get hung up on the numbers. And I have observed, ususally among the newly banded, that people want "as much of a fill as" someone else has. But the number of cc's of saline we have is essentially irrelevant. What IS relevant to me is how much restriction I have. In my case, with a 9.75cm band, my ideal fill is around 1.4 to 1.6 cc's, right now, subject to change as my weight and fat and anatomy change. I think my band holds around 4.0 cc's, but all I need to focus on is the level of restriction I have. And, IMHO, whether a fill (or adjustment) is conservative or aggressive is not a function of how many cc's of saline we have, even if we have identical bands, but of how much restriction there is. In other words, your 2.0 would have me completely shut down. Given my anatomy and where my band is placed and all that, 2.0 would be so aggressive as to be malpractice! And yet, you may be underfilled. SOOOOO, it sounds to me as though your doctor was trying to give you a lot more restriction than you had as of the second adjustment. Now you may have to wait. Because I've learned that many people become more restricted a week later. (I don't get that, but it happens.)
